  • In 2010 Leading Telegraphist Horrie Young provided this in depth interview detailing the true character and behavior of his Z Special Unit shipmates during the daring and famous Operation Jaywick raid on Japanese shipping in occupied Singapore Harbour. Horrie Young was highly regarded and respected by his peers who were the operatives making up the ranks of the bravest of the brave - the secretive Australian Z Special Unit. Listen to the truth from someone totally qualified to explain in detail what actually transpired on the vessel.

The sick berth attendant mentioned at 5.56 who was not permitted to carry weapons, Horrie Young referred to could only be my father Ron Morris, Royal Army Medical Corps who was a medic on Operation Jaywick. He had been recruited to the Special Operation Executive with Lyon in Singapore, both escaped the Japanese and made their way to Ceylon. In addition to his SOE training in Singapore where he and Lyon's were training locals in sabotage, he also undertook training at Camp X with Jaywick's crew. Davidson the second in command of Jaywick credited my father with two kills in the camp log during an exercise testing the crews in advance of the attack. My father as an SOE operative was trained in the full range of weaponry and unarmed combat. With respect, I wish to correct the impression given during this interview. The question re "was Ivan Lyon gay" is totally in appropriate. What on earth was the purpose in asking about the commanders sexuality. He was an incredibly brave and able man. In this day and age such a question is irrelevant.
