I have a theory for why this theme is more intimidating than the other normal boss themes in the classic sonic games. I think Sonic, while confident on the outside, was very intimated by Eggman and was worried that each time he encountered Eggman, he could lose

There's also a theory that the 8-Bit Master System version is actually set just before the 16-Bit Mega Drive version, and retains some of the things that were scrapped from the Mega Drive version of his original back story. It's set on an illustrative island as well whereas this is all removed from the 16-Bit version. Still gives me chills to this day. I had this game on my Genesis way back in my earliest childhood days and grew up with this game and Sonic himself. And this Robotnik theme to this day is my most favorite. The intimidating atmosphere it sets every time I hear it, is the best out of the original Sonic boss themes!
He was terrifying in the first games. Mostly because he didn't speak, and because of the first encounter with him. He was pretty terrifying in the more modern, Sonic Unleashed game imo as well.

That will bring up the level select screen and sound effects and music of each zone and the ability to play special zone before Green Hill zone.

Theres this constant appregiated melody in the background that delves in to that minor scale creating melodic tension when accompanying that main synth and evil descending bassline. Truely a masterpiece in musicality, for an 8bit sound too, its so well constructed. Best Boss theme they created.

This was one the most dramatic boss themes from a Sega genesis game I heard growing. This is how you make a boss sound threatening. And final zone theme makes you feel like your fighting for your life IRL.

nah, sonic 2 and 3 are infinitely superior to sonic 1, yes i agree that the franchise suffered a downfall but it was only in the somewhat recent years. the franchise was pretty consistent until sonic heroes, which the games started to get more controversial, but the majority still liked it, the real downfall was sonic 2006. but the genesis era was gold for sonic. even cd which is the most controversial was still pretty enjoyable and polished

but the genesis era was gold for sonic. even cd which is the most controversial was still pretty enjoyable and polished

I was referring to the aspect that if the music was already excellent in the first game, music just couldn't get any worse than that from this point on. I didn't explain myself as I wanted, I apologize.
I actually absolutely love Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, visually, gameplay and music-wise. They're my absolute favourite games in the franchise. Plus, everything you've stated is correct.
