You are seriously explosively quick. I think I would break something trying to move that quick :)

it's a really interesting video. I come from volley-ball and I have been playing squash for over thirty years. On this shot I always play in open movement because it is much less tiring and the kinetic energy of the back leg is immediately available to return to T. When one is world ranked ten millionth like me, volley effectiveness is relative ;-)

I play racquetball as well as squash. In RB most players use the closed stance lunge when hitting a back hand shot because power is such a big factor. If you're deep in the court you want to be able to hit the ball hard enough where it's past your opponent. Though on the forehand side it's becoming more common to see open stance movements when trying to get to a ball quick when you don't have much time . I think the closed stance lunge you can actually travel FARTHER so on a fast serve it's a better method because you need every fraction of a second to get to a perfect drive serve in the far corner as it's more about getting to the ball to save it than being able to get back in perfect position after the shot. If you open stanced a shot on a drive serve you might not be able to reach the far corner in time. Open stance can be used when you're closer to the front wall and you need less power but you also have less time. Squash is slower and power isn't as big of factor so I can see why you use the open stance more often. Nice video comparing the two. Just remember you can travel farther on the crossover, it's also useful going forward.

This is a great video and one other thing I'd like to see mentioned or tested is playing the ball at a typical volley height of around the shoulders. It looks to me like the deep lunges in the closed stance would prevent you reaching high balls whereas in the open stance there would be less adjustment needed. This would be great to see as there's not usually a need to play a volley that low around the mid court; the ball will be on a poor length anyway making it very easy to hit any corner of your choosing after letting it bounce.

Interesting - I've always found the open stance feels quicker BUT my coach has told me .... the open stance generally places more stress on the joints especially the hips; as I am a 'senior' player he encourages me to hit with a closed stance as much as possible. There is no doubt that squash places huge demands on the body so I heed his advice and so far it/he hasn't let me down. Sometimes in this sport (as an amateur) you have to compromise on perfection in order to achieve optimisation .. otherwise it's a perpetual journey in and out of injury.

I often like to think about the best ways to extend a squash career. This is an interesting point you made. I can see how the hips are put in an awkward position in the open stance.

I think that is true. I also feel much more pressure on my lower back when hitting open on the forehand in particular because I place a lot of my weight on the right leg. Going closed causes the load to be more evenly applied to both legs.

Would you say that you also sacrifice some shot flexibility with the open stance, again particularly on the backhand? I would think it's harder to play the full variety of shots accurately, and so you will tend to just play straight and therefore also more predictably, which might well lost you a lot more time than the small gain of the open stance.

Personally open stands can be used for Ad-hoc situation , closed stands or traditional one can used for presice shot making!!!

Most ridicolous video ever. It really depends on ball, opponent, shot selection etc.
