Awesome review - thanks for taking the time to create this. Made me happy to see you loved the things we wanted people to love - small, simple, fast, fun!
Thank You guys for another interesting review! Love the idea just hope the next version has more dynamic range or at least it lets us choose to sacrifice frame rate for dynamic range
Great review!! I’ve had mine for a few months and absolutely love it!! I just wish the files would transfer faster. It takes hours to move all the footage to my computer
Wish there was a way to do burst shooting for 2-4 seconds like how the Chronos does it. But then the trade off is waiting to shoot again while the footage gets offloaded from the RAM to storage.
Lovely. Wonderfully detailed coverage. The short clip of a knight falling off his horse gets a thumbs-up for appropriate use of high frame rates - really fun shot! Freefly has always been a fascinating company. Well worth visiting their channel.
In the film industry the Job is called Highspeed Operator. The Demand is already there. Get to know industry standard cameras like the phantom high-speed cameras. It really helps to be on film sets in generell. Get to know work flows in the camera department, since these are the same Workflows on high paid commercials. Work as AC and get to know camera accessories (maybe even work in a movie rental) and you’ll be able to specialise in commercial work and being a highspeed Operator. :)
5120x2880@600fps and open gate @360fps seem like essentially the perfect use cases for this camera. You get the full width of the sensor at anywhere from 25x (24fps) to 10x (60fps) slow-mo with a global shutter and pretty damn good dynamic range. Basketball/football/baseball slow-mo shots, anyone?
I think a really easy way Freefly could differentiate themselves from the market would be to include a log profile. Right now, by virtue of only supporting HLG and Rec709 profiles, it can't really be well-supported by any color management pipeline. When I've emailed their support team, they didn't seem to understand the value of a log profile even though it's just as easy for them to implement as any other in-camera picture profile, and would enable a lot of high end workflows with this camera. Hell, Phantom RAW's color management support is broken in Resolve and has some tone mapping built in. Freefly could literally outperform their only competitor in this aspect and it's just a firmware adjustment.
Tbh the argument that they can't design a log profile that has the right noise levels for them is bogus. I'll happily design their log profile for free if they want.
Please give us a “one year later” update video to show us if free fly has implemented any of the desired updates that you mentioned. Still interested in getting one of these cameras. Seems like there were a few things in beta and I’m curious what they’ve addressed in firmware over last year :)
I've been dying to test out this camera. The footage looks really great overall! With such low ISO options, did you guys even need to use ND filters when shooting outside? I imagine in a studio setting you need to throw ridiculous amounts of light at this sensor, and no chance in hell that it is usable in any low light environment. Also did you mess around with the shutter angle? I assume the 180 rule doesn't really apply here since you aren't going to want any sort of motion blur in super slow motion footage.
@@thatcherfreeman Interesting, I hadn't thought of it from that angle. But you're right, I have seen slow motion footage that seemed to stutter, and maybe this is why.
@@DynamicPhil84 There is one thing to watch out for, which is that if some footage is shot at say, 1200fps, but the editor decided later that 240fps was sufficient, then they'll effectively be slowing down the clips by 10x instead of the 50x that's possible with the footage. Depending on the retiming algorithm used, they may just be dropping all frames except for every fifth frame, which would give the appearance of footage taken with a 72 degree shutter angle or less. One alternative I'm experimenting with, if you're not sure what speed you want to play back the footage but can shoot very high framerates and have cheap storage, is that you could shoot at a 360 degree shutter at a high speed. Then, if you later want to play it back faster, you can blend and drop an appropriate number of frames and simulate a variety of shutter speeds so it's not choppy.
@@thatcherfreeman We live in 2023 mate. Not in 1923. 24 fps looks like crap. Even the Lord of the Rings movie with the pan over the attacking hordes stuttered like mad shit because of the stupid 24 fps. Thankfully they went to 48 fps for the 4th movie.
Offload speeds top out at 260MB/s... It's difficult to describe how limiting this is on a TV/Film set where these are beginning to pop up. Being able to turn footage around rapidly is absolutely critical. Massive drawback imo.

overall i am super hyped about the ember and i wish cvp could make a comparison of the ember the wave and the chronos 2.1 mabe even an phantom and the Edgertronic and so on it would be soooo cool because i still think that i buy the cat in the bag since i can not test it myself
Cinematic looks are achieved by film crews with departments like light, grip, costume etc. the camera is really not the key to making things look “cinematic”. :)
If you put your project framerate to 50p, the HDMI can not output 50p? How about sensitivity of the sensor: with the same lux, does the ember at 400 ISO and the Raptor at 800 ISO have the same T-stop on the lens to expose for middle gray?
They need to design a function that lets you instantly delete anything behind one minute of recording .. over and over again - while you’re waiting for a bird to fly away 😂
hear me out: dual sensor design for slowmo cams. Minolta already made a dual sensor cam and multi sensor cameras were also a thing beack in the days. Maybe the time has come for revisiting old tech like this. You can either use two identical sensors and use median mixing methods to cut down the noise so much that the shadows get more usable or a second version with an nd to create a hdr image or at least to make up for the loss of dynamic range ...
There's probably great value in using the two sensors to make an HDR composite and extending the dynamic range, but taking the mean between two equal ISO images might not lower the noise significantly. That's because you're sending half the light to each sensor, which will increase noise by one stop and then taking the mean will bring you back to the original noise levels as if you had one sensor.

@@thatcherfreeman like i said it is a either or situation, either expanding the dynamic range by creating an hdr composite or by doubling the the signal and use the mix of both signals to reduce the noise, this can also expand the dynamic range slightly because less noise means more usable underexposed stops
I see clear stuttering in the slowmotion footage from 0:12 to 1:12 - Is that on my side or is there something wrong with your video? Wrong framerates etc?
No issues in the rendered file our end, I can maybe see a little bit of what you are referring to. My guess would be UA-cam compression being as awful as ever. Jake
@@Louishouiller That's a hard question to answer. Everyone's situation may be different. I'd say if you have clients that would pay you for that type of footage, then it could be worth it. If 120fps is enough slow motion for you, then definitely don't get the Ember since the dynamic range isn't as good as a lot of other cameras with 120fps.
just checked the price...$15,000... are you having a laugh?! Sorry, but...who do you think is watching this YT channel?! This camera is a toy for the absolute top-end of Hollywood DoPs and while they might find this video interesting, c'mon fellas, at least 90% of the audience here will never use or need such an expensive luxury. I can't imagine EVER needing such a tool and would never consider spending that kind of cash on such frippery. I can make several TV shows for Africa and Asia for that amount of money...

Educational for people wanting to buy the camera (we've sold a good few of them), people who may rent one and want to know more about it and people who may never touch one, but are interested to learn more about new cameras and see what it can do. Just because you don't think you'll ever use this camera, doesn't mean that someone else may find use for it. It's a very niche camera, but a very interesting one that we wanted to share with our viewers and customers. Jake
@@UA-cam_can_ESAD You're quite right of course and I think my attitude stems from the fact I am in S.E Asia, catering to the - ahem- budget end of the market lol. Sure, there are lots of videos online you can check to confirm it’s capabilities
