I had grand plans to upgrade my Sport when I got it, but decided to wait 3 months to see what I may want. I took it up some steep mountain roads, ones that most SUVs would have major issues doing and did it with no real problems. I also got to enjoy how a stock Wrangler drove on the road. After the three months, I realized that the only thing I needed was better AT tires to meet my needs.
We started the Rubicon trail last month behind a team of Jeep engineers and their two completely stock Gladiators running full tire pressure. They were a lot slower than our group and let us pass, but their goal was to evaluate that part of the trail for the upcoming Jeep Safari.
Just got my gladiator home today!!! Been waiting a long time to have a Jeep. 22 years. And made up my mind 2 years ago and your videos have been a huge help and motivation along the way. Thank you. Finally in the club!
You will love your new Gladiator! I don't have one, but I do have a 2012 Unlimited Wrangler Rubicon I've had since two months before taking delivery of it. (Yes, my Ruby was a factory order.) I dearly love my Jeep. This 2012 was my first Jeep. It was nine years since taking delivery of it this past April. The only problem I've had with my Rubicon was the factory navigation system, Jeep's mid-level offering in 2012, failed while Ruby was still under warranty. To this day there are no oil leaks under my Wrangler. You made a great choice. I believe you will grow happier with your new Gladiator the longer you've owned it. For Jeep lovers, THIS is THE best website, in my humble opinion. Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Hawaii.
Yes! Love my 2019, manual transmission, doors, and locks. Some of my friends didn’t know how to manually roll down the windows until I explained it, lol.
A "basic" Jeep is way more awesome than most other vehicles. I bought a '21 JLU sahara, and while it's great having almost all the bells and whistles, the expense of the payments really limits my ability to customize it and mod it out. If I could do it over again, I'd but a lower trim for a lower monthly payment, and slowly and cheaply mod it out over time to meet my needs. Enjoy your new car!

Originally I was thinking a four door, but do I really need all of that space. I’ve been driving MINI Coopers for twelve years so I already know what “packing lite” means… Thank you for reinforcing what I’ve been thinking.
Why buy an 'expensive' new Jeep! We have a 2015 2 dr sport manual.. people are always whining about how impossible it is to sleep inside. I'm 6-2 and I do. I figured out how to make the passenger seat fold flat to quickly make into a 6-4 bed. Two can sleep inside, the driver's side is shorter but if you're half cool and not an amazon, it's doable. I pack my ct90 on the trailer hitch, it's a great package with storage under. 👍👍

Had a Modded up ‘90 YJ, had fun doing it for 5yrs, was therapy for the mind on weekends. Then it became a job of always fixing and compensating for the mods and being in the shop. I now have a ‘14 & wife has a ‘17 JK stock and “enjoy” it more. I think once you get past the initial craze of adding everything/anything then realizing how gaudy it can look you end up stock.

I have a 2017 stock willys wrangler. Drove from El Paso Texas to Las Vegas and it did surprisingly well. Obviously not a smooth quiet ride but it wasnt as uncomfortable as i thought it would be.
Have had my Gladiator Sport with the Max Tow package, Mopar rock sliders & aux switches since January. Everything I needed & could afford for a daily driver & hitting the trails 1 or two times a month here in northern Colorado. I added a 1.5" Teraflex leveling kit, 3/4" rear. JL Rubicon take off wheels & tires. I may add some additional skid plates. That's all I'll realistically ever need for a DD.
I own a 2014 two-door Rubicon for several years and kept it stock except with a warn winch on the front and love it. Also loved your Border Collie because we have had two of them and they are great dogs, loved the booties LOL!!
got the same jeep a few months ago in sarge green soft top only options are AC ,running boards, slip diff with all terrain tires. i love it,also plan on keeping it stock as well, except maybe removing the piece of plastic between the front bumper and fender
I'll go to 33s, maybe 35s at some point, and maybe a 2" lift, but I'm wearing out the stock tires (and they are wearing fast) first on my Gladiator. Damn capable as is.
Good stuff Eddie I’m looking for a 2 door only thing be changing is tires an manual sway bar disconnect in manual trans of course all I need to explore the desert lol glad you an Cindy are good as always be safe 👍👍👍👍👍
Been wanting a wrangler for some time and after watching your video taking Pippy to the trails I think I may just do a basic 2 door wrangler myself seems their better for personal mods. Was of course wanting a Rubicon or Willis sport but you've opened my eyes so to speak🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
i am still rolling my 2010 JKU with half doors. Other than a Banks Cold Air intake, a programmer and a set of 33x15 tires and wheels its still stock for 220K miles. Simple and plane works!
I've got a loaded out 4XE. But I'd love to get behind the wheel of an old CJ5, sometime. There's just something about an old shifter vibrating in your hand because it's literally connected to the transmission. And a steering wheel that's connected to a steering rack that's connected to the wheel assembly that just connected with a tree root and you can tell? Even better.
I have always LOVED Wrangler and I’m finally thinking of buying my 1st one😊 2019 JL 2 door automatic. It’s slightly used with only 6, 000km. I live in Ontario Canada. What would you suggest for my 1st mod as a daily driver ? Love your channel too. Can’t wait for the adventures to begin.
Awesome! I think you're gonna love it. As far as first mods go, would this be a mod for off roading or just in general? If off roading, this is what I would recommend ua-cam.com/video/yIjazW0tAkg/v-deo.html
We have a stock 2018 Wrangler JL, 2 door, manual six speed, soft top with a Rubicon modular steel front bumper as its only modification upgrade. It has roll down retro windows! You’re correct… as a 5’7” guy, a stock Jeep with a leveling package is a good fit for me. Now, don’t get me wrong, I would still love to drive Moby!!!!
My TJ was a Sport that ended up with a 4” lift and 35’s. Always said if I bought another one I would just buy a Rubicon. And now I wheel a 2014 2 door JK Rubicon on 295’s and couldn’t be happier.
I just love yours and Cindys channel! ❤️ been here for a long time! I’ll be getting my second 22 JLR once they become available 😊 I got my first one (18 JLR) from Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg ID and that’s where I’ll be purchasing my second one from.
I’ve done more in a stock truck with mildly aggressive tires than many folks will ever do with their modded out rigs. First priority with my new JLU was a winch and winch bumper. Second was a second set of wheels/tires for snow and mud. Third was armor underneath. I may lift it an inch or so front and 3/4” rear to make up for the extra weight, but that’s it. It will take me anywhere I need to go and spending many tens of thousands to gain a few percent more locations is not for me. No shade on those who want to make their rigs what they want - it’s your money, you do you. But few people actually need it, and only a very few will truly push a rig to its limits.
I live in ND but didn’t grow up here. I absolutely hate driving on snow and icy roads in the winter. I hate getting “almost-stuck” in the snow and in thr muddy non-paved road whenever i visit family who live out in thr outskirts of town because they have a ranch. I think the wrangler would be perfect for me. Granted, i probably wont be taking it off-roading for leisure (but necessary off-road driving lol) and probably a mall crawler and it isn’t eco on gas but dang the idea of not being stuck during winter is very tempting
I love my BASIC wrangler JL, soft top, crank windows, manual mirrors, all basic, the only mods I have really done, rancho shocks and some Rubicon take offs suspension wheels and tires. Basic goes anywhere I need it to go I'm sure it will go farther than I will go.
Base models are great. I've got an old used 07 Wrangler Unlimited X. It's RWD only. Might think "Well dang, that's horrible", but not so much. 4WD conversion is cheap, especially given I only paid 5k for the Jeep with no damage. That leaves my budget way open since I was going to change most of that out anyway. For heavy mod plans all you really need is a functional body since the rest is going to go.
Well done on pointing the pros and cons of stock and upgraded rig! For daily used i like our automatic van specially in traffic jams in my country. Though i drive on manual tranny too in farm roads and heavy loads, less complex when fixing and cost less.. Oh Ripley got new shoes too👏👏👏
I just bought a 2023 wrangler sport. And as much as I wanted the fully loaded trim with automatic locks I’m just happy to own a Jeep and to have gotten a deal 😭💕
Cool video. We just bought a 2023 Sport S with a stick. I’m seriously thinking of regearing it. Does yours have the 3.45? How do you like it? If you were to change the ratio with stock tires what would you go to?
Yeah, we have the 3.45 and if there is an upside to it, with stock tires, you do get much better fuel economy with it. 3.73 or even better, 4.10 would give you more power but I honestly don't think that small of a ratio change is worth it. Me personally, I would only regear after installing a set of 35" tires and at that point and time, I would do 4.56 to get you back up to stock tire with 3.73 performance or 4.88 for more power.
nice vid. Still running my stock JK. Yes there are some things I want to up grade but I'm not hard core off road like my son-in-law. Stock is almost perfect. Yes 2 Sport S in what I drive,,, might like a better LS in the back, different fends just for the look, and a bumper /winch up grade. beyond that I still have to drive to work each day, summer and winter.
Question (and maybe future video suggestion?) about the swaybar. Rubicon’s have a power disconnect, and there are tons of aftermarket quick disconnects, but could you just unbolt them links and zip tie them up?
Drove my new 2024 JL Sport 4 door from Boise to Reno on one tank of gas (Meridian Costco, 91 octane) with 95 miles of range left. Today, made the reverse trip again on one tank (Reno Costco) and arrived in Meridian with 65 mile range left. According to the onboard computer, 27 mpg to Reno and 26 mpg to Meridian. I have yet to do any significant off-roading, other than Boise Ridge Road, which it handled just fine. I think the only mod I will do is a set of AT tires, and will stick to either the stock size (245/70r17) or maybe just a tad larger (255/75r17). My wife drives a 2 door Rubicon and I was initially envious enough to consider a lift. After watching this video, as well as the one of Pippi going off-road, in addition to my experience thus far, I will pass on the lift and any consideration of 33s.
Great video, you are right on my friend! That's why I'm going somewhere in the middle, building my Jeep up modestly on 35s. And Ripley's getting so big! My pups would refuse to even stand on those things 😂
Just found your site and all your videos. My family and I are looking for our first jeep and have NO idea what we want/need. We plan to do basic offroad stuff and some moab trails. And need a 4 door, would love your insight/suggestions.
Glad you found us and happy to hear you enjoy our videos. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend a Rubicon as it will come with everything that you need to take on most of the trails out in Moab and right out of the box. If you're not on wayalife.com, I would encourage you to sign up as you will find a lot of other people with good knowledge that can help out as well.
I have a 2017 2 door JK and we took a trip of over 400 miles and averaged 24 mpg but I was using 100 percent gas. The same trip last year I averaged 18 with 10% ethanol gas.
Without a doubt, you have the most informative Jeep Wrangler channel. Thank you for all of the time you put into it. Truly an example to follow. I have a 2010 Rav4 Sport V6, and have never owned a Jeep, yet, after seeing this video and one more about this new base model, I have subscribed. For the past year, I have schemed, planned, created Excel spreadsheets, and saved for a 4Runner TRD Off Road. And I haven't given up on it. But my gosh, you guys have turned my head with this video, and others you've created. You seem very honest, obviously Jeep-knowledgeable, and genuine. You very likely know the 4Runner has a better reliability record. I'm curious what it is about Jeeps that, for you, justifies buying so many of them? What can you share about the JL reliability? Thanks again - eyes opened - entertained - informed - thankful.
Thank you, we're happy to hear you enjoy our videos. I should note that I think Toyota's are great vehicles and used to own a 4Runner way back in the day. Part of the reason why I'm a Jeep guy is because I love the history of them. Also, there's a bit of nostalgia as well as it was my dad got me into them. However, the biggest reason why I love Jeeps or maybe specifically, the Wrangler, it's that they're so incredibly capable right out of the box. They have a solid axles, don't take a whole lot to get them running much bigger tires and maybe most importantly, they have an enormous amount of aftermarket support to do just about anything. As far as reliability goes, what I can tell you is that of the last 8 new Jeeps that I've bought and 4 that I still own, only 1 has had issues. That was a 2012 JKUR and it was soon after the 3.6L came out. Aside from that, ALL my other Jeeps have been problem free.
@@wayalife Thanks for your reply. Ah, thank goodness for all the dads getting us into something useful...most of the time :) Glad to hear about your good experiences with Jeep reliability. Seems to be hit or miss, but several other UA-camrs are saying the same. Maybe a few bad apples built up an undeserved mystique. That, and Consumer Reports. Anyway, I'm looking fwd to digging into your channel more. Pippi tackling the rocks at Last Chance Canyon blew my mind. Thanks again.
I have a 2 door rubicon on order I'm gonna keep it stock. Well....maybe 35's...and bumpers .....and a winch. Then I'll realize 35's are too small and I need a lift and 37"s. Well crap then I'll have to regear. But anyways I tell myself I'm keeping it stock.🤣
Next week gets a call from Mel do you want to test this kit an itll be on 42s (teasing) seriously before i built up my 88 4runner i learned to wheel it stock and after tons and 37s i kinda wish it was stock again
Old dirt roads and light trails is all I will see 8n off-roading. With how much I work and only free on weekends (sometimes) plus my jeep being a daily driver I won't have time for the hard ore stuff. Maybe snow with my 34 in all-terrian tires but that's all. Just don't wanna look like a mall crawler. I have the rock lights (added for free with my 49 in, 22in, light bars and 4 spot lights)
I am to one of the few people that has kept my 2020 2dr Rubicon hard top v6 manual stock except for a winch, I use it off road I just do the green and blue trails , happy with it as it is . The Rubicon is very capable stock why mess a good thing that is what I say.
I have had my 2015 rubicon hard rock for 6 years now. It’s never let me down. I have been all over souther Nevada and southern Utah. It’s far more capable than I am off road. The only change I made was getting rid of the factory rubber hood latches for the drake off road turnbuckle latches and hood pin.
Did not recognize the tread design on the dog booties. Are they M/T's or A/T's? Either way, nice addition to prevent paw burns on hot asphalt or concrete. May be premature as the temperatures here in central AZ is above 100, but are studded booties in the works for winter time and walking on ice?
Good day, Enjoy your straight talk about Jeep life and modifications. Glad you do not use any profanity or have to beep out the videos. Very refreshing to watch. Help, I drowning with so many options for Jeep. I have a 2019 Sport Wrangler 2 door like your new ride, but with the eight speed automatic. Like to upgrade my tire size but keep the stock axles. I'm only planning to do trail driving to get back in the country for hiking and camping no hard rock climbing. Any new recommendations from all your years of off road adventures? Stay in the 35" size or go up to the new 38" Nitto's ? Maybe change to a coil over suspension system to handle the larger tires and ride. Need your wise view about this.
Personally, I would stick with 35's even if you don't do any hard rock crawling and mainly because anything bigger will leave your Jeep feeling under powered. Sure, you can regear but the ratio you'd want to would leave you with a very small pinion and that's just to bring you back to stock performance.
Okay all great points and I agree 100 percent. Although the part at the end is bordering on animal cruelty! The pup knew the camera was rolling and very obvious the poor little guy was completely embarrassed. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like you need to put a transmission/oil pan skid plate on the Gladiator. I highly recommend Mountain Off Road Enterprises if it'll fit with all their modifications done to your truck.

I have a 2017 stock willys wrangler. Drove from El Paso Texas to Las Vegas and it did surprisingly well. Obviously not a smooth quiet ride but it wasnt as uncomfortable as i thought it would be.
Awesome. 😎
Very cool
I own a 2014 two-door Rubicon for several years and kept it stock except with a warn winch on the front and love it. Also loved your Border Collie because we have had two of them and they are great dogs, loved the booties LOL!!
Very cool. Ripley is our 2nd and yes, they are the best.
got the same jeep a few months ago in sarge green soft top only options are AC ,running boards, slip diff with all terrain tires. i love it,also plan on keeping it stock as well, except maybe removing the piece of plastic between the front bumper and fender
Awesome and congratulations to you 👍
You rock. Thank you so much for Just The Facts. You make common sense great again. Nicely done.
I appreciate that! 😎
I'll go to 33s, maybe 35s at some point, and maybe a 2" lift, but I'm wearing out the stock tires (and they are wearing fast) first on my Gladiator. Damn capable as is.
The beauty of the Wrangler (or JT) platform is it versatility. You can wheel it stock or as built up as you like.
Exactly!
I really hope you guys show up to bantam Jeep festival 2022 because that is when I will be able to drive on the trails
Can't guarantee anything but it would be fun to make it there.
Anything is anything not saying you have to go but it would be cool
Good stuff Eddie I’m looking for a 2 door only thing be changing is tires an manual sway bar disconnect in manual trans of course all I need to explore the desert lol glad you an Cindy are good as always be safe 👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on finding what you're wanting! 👍
Awesome video. You take away a lot of the overwhelming info I've been finding trying to pick a jeep. Thanks a lot!
Glad to hear it! 😎
Nice video on "a basic Jeep"---and, of course, its advantages! Well done as always. Thank you both very much!
Awesome, happy to hear you liked our video 😎
Been wanting a wrangler for some time and after watching your video taking Pippy to the trails I think I may just do a basic 2 door wrangler myself seems their better for personal mods. Was of course wanting a Rubicon or Willis sport but you've opened my eyes so to speak🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Awesome
i am still rolling my 2010 JKU with half doors. Other than a Banks Cold Air intake, a programmer and a set of 33x15 tires and wheels its still stock for 220K miles. Simple and plane works!
Awesome! :)
They are as awesome and fun as you're imagining :)
1st mod I was thinking was to hep it be a better daily driver with the odd dirt road or dry trail 😉Thank you, I’ll check out the link.
Thank you for informative video. I am thinking something similar for my sister.
And yes your dog videos are a delight to watch. 👍
Thank you!
Glad to hear our video was helpful to you and that you enjoyed seeing Ripley 😎
I like base jeeps because I can build them the way I want and that how jeeps were suppose to be made, basic.
Just

Awesome! 😎
Just bought one. 2 door, no AC, manual transmission and I did get the hard top. Loving my 2021 Jeep sport.
Congratulations to you 👍
We have a stock 2018 Wrangler JL, 2 door, manual six speed, soft top with a Rubicon modular steel front bumper as its only modification upgrade.
It has roll down retro windows!
You’re correct… as a 5’7” guy, a stock Jeep with a leveling package is a good fit for me.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I would still love to drive Moby!!!!
LOL - awesome :)
Great video. We love our 22 2 door willys otherwise known as Inky.
Awesome and glad you enjoyed the video.
I've been trying to find a 95 model like had back in 95. I lived that jeep.
That's the best part about a Jeep.
You can customize it to fit YOU!
Well said!
Great video, why I ordered a Willys, solid balance and all most will need in a Jeep!
Good choice!
My TJ was a Sport that ended up with a 4” lift and 35’s. Always said if I bought another one I would just buy a Rubicon. And now I wheel a 2014 2 door JK Rubicon on 295’s and couldn’t be happier.
Awesome!
I just love yours and Cindys channel! ❤️ been here for a long time! I’ll be getting my second 22 JLR once they become available 😊 I got my first one (18 JLR) from Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg ID and that’s where I’ll be purchasing my second one from.
Awesome, we're so glad to hear it and very cool that you'll be getting another Jeep! 😎
@@wayalife Thanks so much Eddie! 😊 I love how many Jeep’s you guys have! Talk about pure paradise! Hope you’re loving your newest addition Pippi! 🥰
Super thank you to you brother. Someone who appreciate a stock sport jeep. ✌
Awesome 😎
Bought my 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport with the Altitude package. Doing very light changes to enjoy the factory ride quality.
Great to hear!
Nothing wrong with that. A good capable vehicle is something that a lot of people can benefit from.
I love my BASIC wrangler JL, soft top, crank windows, manual mirrors, all basic, the only mods I have really done, rancho shocks and some Rubicon take offs suspension wheels and tires. Basic goes anywhere I need it to go I'm sure it will go farther than I will go.
Awesome 👍
Ripley is 🆒 with his new black boots 😎! He's a joy to watch ! 🤠 🚙
I completely agree. I dig my stock Sting Gray 4door turbo 4banger Sport S.
Awesome! 😎
Yup, I got a 2017 Willys Jeep Wrangler and have kept it stock, its all original and performs excellent.
Awesome! 😎
Very informative, thank you! By the way, my stock 2 door manual JL Sport makes 9 liters per 100 km (26 mpg) on freeway at 100 km per hour speed.
That's awesome!
Awesome!
Doing the same with an 08 right now.
Congratulations to you and really, what you have is all you need. Enjoy it!! 👍
Love my stock JK’s. Looking at a 2022 JL. Only wish Jeep would make the headlight LED as a standard option.
The LED's are nice and they may be the only thing that I miss on this Jeep.
Always with the amazing production quality! This reminds me that I need a name for my JL LOL
Why thank you 😎
Great video as always. Any chance you could do one on vehicle maintenance such as grease and torquing?
Sure, sounds like a great idea!
Glad you enjoyed our video and that you're happy with your Jeep!
Question (and maybe future video suggestion?) about the swaybar. Rubicon’s have a power disconnect, and there are tons of aftermarket quick disconnects, but could you just unbolt them links and zip tie them up?
Yup, that's the way we used to do it back in the day.
Great video. The puppy shoes part is super cute
Glad you enjoyed it 😎
Yeah that opening shot with the rumbling V-8. Knew it wasn’t the JL 2-door.
LOL - gotta love Moby 😎
your editing is class
Thank you, we appreciate it :)
LOL - I think 35's on a 2-door is about as capable as a 4-door is on 37's. Good setup and one that won't break the bank.
Love the sound from that V8
LOL - we love it too 😎
Without a doubt, you have the most informative Jeep Wrangler channel.
GREAT video.
REALLY ENJOYED it.
THANK You.
10/10.
Glad you enjoyed it!
LOL 🤣
This was a really cool video, ma man
Thank you :)
Love my Sport, manual trans and soft top
Very cool! 😎
Next week gets a call from Mel do you want to test this kit an itll be on 42s (teasing) seriously before i built up my 88 4runner i learned to wheel it stock and after tons and 37s i kinda wish it was stock again
LOL
Awesome!
Nice! Glad to hear from another person happy with a basic Jeep :)
mine is stock and its been like that for 3 years. 2 door JL sport. (cant afford any upgrades at the moment)
Nothing wrong with that :)
Did not recognize the tread design on the dog booties. Are they M/T's or A/T's? Either way, nice addition to prevent paw burns on hot asphalt or concrete. May be premature as the temperatures here in central AZ is above 100, but are studded booties in the works for winter time and walking on ice?
LOL! Haven't really needed anything for winter so I'm not sure.
Any upgrades to reduce the noise of that fan? The one thing that drives me nuts at times is the hairdryer level of sound from that thing.
LOL - the noise really sucks but really, it's something you want as it really does a good job at keeping your engine cool.
Love my 20 wrangler sport 2dr...turn on a dime..been to Rausch creek twice..definitely does more then what I'm willing to do...all stock...
Awesome :)
Okay all great points and I agree 100 percent. Although the part at the end is bordering on animal cruelty! The pup knew the camera was rolling and very obvious the poor little guy was completely embarrassed. Thanks for sharing.
LOL - too funny :)
Looks like you need to put a transmission/oil pan skid plate on the Gladiator. I highly recommend Mountain Off Road Enterprises if it'll fit with all their modifications done to your truck.
LOL - eh, never really been a fan of aftermarket skid plates. Hate how they trap in heat and make it hard to service my Jeep.
I am getting 15-16 mpg in my g!adiator rubicon with a 2 inch lift and 35 inch tires, stock diffs.
That's awesome. Wish I could say the same.
I love a little appreciation to a more Everyman concept. For some of us a base model is a major expense.
