Here I go over how I converted our two piece door into a one piece door with latch and lock. The door stays latched when swung closed.

I like this idea and lock i watched other videos and it didn't look like the door closed tight. I am going with your idea.

you might want to close that gap a little bit for better latch engagement.. remember, your door "lock" does not have a positive locking engagement such as a regular automobile has.. it's only a spring loaded latch (40 years a locksmith experience and observation)

That's awesome. I am doing this on my bus door.

Total cost was maybe $25-30 and took a few hours of my time. Mostly figuring out how to mount the catch slightly recessed into the door frame

This is a great idea, I was contemplating putting in a house door but making the school bus door one door is much better. I just bough a mini school bus and started converting.

Awesome job, very creative. I've seen it done with the bus doors that swing to one side(right). and the piano hinge was used. but now there's hope for us non-welders!

Absolutely! I didn’t break out the welder for any of it!
Just a cut of wheel and grinder for cutting the flat stock and the space for the catch to sit in the door frame

Also I wanted the door to swing this way so while driving the wind will naturally push the door closed

I would weld a nice thick metal angle bracket kind of shelf ledge thing on the inside of the door. this way no one can BEND your door in the middle and pop it right open.
otherwise. VERY cool !! and nicely done!

So far so good. We have seven kids and it's held up nicely so far. But thanks for the tip. If we ever need to replace it will consider that.

Nice mod, the doors on my bus are built differently though so I am not sure this would work but does give me ideas.

re-watched this video to refresh my memory on what all you did to the door and I have one question: When the door closes it locks automatically, what happens when you don't have your keys on you?
Seems like you will be locking yourself out of the bus a lot.

Do you think this would work the same if the steel strips were bolted on the inside instead?

Native Sojourner If u go watch Ian Robinson. All his builds have THOUSANDs. But once he stopped. He dropped to barely 1,000. It has to be a good attitude a good build info and good camera views. I been studying for 7+ months for my build in September. I watch any and everything I can. I don't mean any harm but from experience I tell you because I'd like to see your work thank you

      Thanks for the tips!
Maybe when I have more time available I can focus more on videos and less in just completing the work
