Great vid Ben!! Straight shooter as always. I have the Yates winning Ti on order since May so should be any day now. I may pickup the Mamba 70 one day as well just to try it.
Great video. I agree with most everything you said. I’m not buying anymore, just going through what I have. When and if I run out of something just gonna buy stuff from Stirling or one of the Italian brands that have been around forever. Still enjoy wet shaving, but don’t feel the need to try everything anymore.
I feel I'm in the same boat. Went crazy chasing scents till one day I looked on my collection and said enough. Thankfully I only bought soap samples, about 170 of them and cologne/aftershave samples, plus some frag oils. 9 full size tubs of unscented soaps each from different artisan to mix with frags. Sold all the hardware, left only 3 razors, 2 brushes. With just soap samples and 9 tubs I'm set for rest of my life. I will never use it up. I own almost all Stirling scents samples and those are 1oz each. That is 80oz of soap alone. Have not bought anything in 8 months. Even though I bought samples I still look back and think WTF was I doing. All I need is couple tubs, one brush and two razors (one head, one face). Thankfully I live in a tiny space so having big tubs/aftershaves combos was never an option.
Rex now has Rex razor blades. That's new, this week I think. But I have not heard about any new razor coming out except that Matt talked about doing a single edge at one point I think.
I think there will be a big consolidation of artisan soap companies. You are correct, each new soap base is hardly an improvement over the last. I only have 3 soaps from 2 artisans. I will whittle that down to 1 artisan that is based near where I live.
I like your no nonsense approach to shaving. I’ve been in the hobby now for roughly 1.5 years and have accumulated probably 25 full sized soap tubs/splashes. I try to organize them by scent and season and rotate each season. Still, I feel like I have more software than I’ll ever need in a lifetime. I’m also trying to sell some of my razors and soaps. Like you I now only rotate between two razors mainly, my Rex Envoy and Aylsworth Apex SS+. Appreciate the Q&A brother
Another top video, Ben - and very interesting. I’ll be sorry to see you retire from the shaving video scene. Your comment about tube shaving cream struck a chord with me. Like you, I find them easier to use and build a lather with. I also agree that there’s no perfect razor out there. The trick, it seems to me, is to find one that works well and keep using it. As you said, experience and muscle memory kick in and the shaving process becomes a simple one. Anyway, have a safe trip home, and enjoy being able to spend time with your wife. I’ll check out your new channel in due course, but suspect the hiking gear rabbit hole is likely to be way wider and deeper than the shaving one! Cheers. 👍🪒
Niice one, 9½ mins in, paused, to go and purchase an AP Shave Co brush, I'd already declined an offer on it earlier in the week 😂 was making do with a Simpsons T1, but far too small, am away from Home 🙈
Great discussion man. I sampled DAB and I agree it’s a great scent. I don’t think we’ve seen anyone else make a dupe of brylcreem (that I know of). Takes me right back to a hair salon in the mall in the early 90s.
Disclaimer: Not a “soap” guy🤷🏼♂️ If I could only have one it would be Martin De Candre .. hard soaps last forever. And I load the brush off the puck and build a fantastic lather on the face. Disclaimer: Not a brush guy🤷🏼♂️ I own a badger, a boar and a synth That’s enough. One of each but I use the Synth the most. Disclaimer: Not a bowl guy. I primarily build lather on Face and allow the brush “exercise & effort” to work on flesh not plastic or metal. Disclaimer: I do love the Razors I own quite a few, and honestly too many.. not proud of it, but I’m also not embarrassed by it. I switch up all the time and yeah I could pick my top 3, 5 or 10… and while I don’t buy as many as I used to, I have several that I still plan to purchase over time. You will never own them all, and wouldn’t want too (imo) but if i see one that I find of interest, it’s probably getting purchased🤷🏼♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣
MDC soap gave me red skin every time i used it. It is simple basic soap without any good-for-skin ingradients. I would rather not shave than use only mdc soap😂😂😂
@@efektmurowany MDC is stearic acid and coconut oil. Just two main oils. I said, “not a soap guy”, but not because I don’t own soap. My favorite soft base is A&E (Doral), I also own PAA, Saponificio Varesino, Hags, Aqua Di Parma, CBL, Paraso, MWF, Bundabeard, Arko, Tobac, Noble Otter, Sterling, Southern Witvhcraft, Zingari Man, Ethos Grooming, Lothur, Shannon’s, WSP, & SEBūM GOLD and others that I can’t remember. Over the journey I just found MDC is my go to “quick and easy” and fortunately it works great for my skin. I don’t disagree that MDC is simple. But in my case it works. I’ve never sold a razor, soap or brush. But I do gift items to new wet shavers that I know are interested in the hobby. Stopped counting after 30+ took it up. All of my sons wet shave and they all have been gifted many soaps. Everyone is different, that’s what’s great about it. Sorry MDC doesn’t work for you. I wasn’t recommending MDC. I was just to succinct in category call outs.

Loved the video Ben. Many truths spoken here.

Hi Ben,very good question answer video 👍
Really have enjoyed the content and your honest perspective.

This was a great session Ben, cheers
Thank you for the awesome content
How much do you reckon you have spent on the traditional wet shaving hobby?
