      After hearing you talk about Aristotle and Dante I can understand why you also wasn't a big fan of the Raven Cycle, it's definitely a very character driven series (which is one of the reasons I loved it so much) but as you said, you are more of a plot gal!

    Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is actually my favorite book so when I saw you pull it up I audibly gasped lol. However, I totally understand why you didn't like the book. I've read the book more times than I can count now so I understand the flow and rhythm of it well. If you like fast, plot driven books than this is not for you. Personally, I LOVE character development books which is one of the reasons I adored it so much. I also found myself able to relate to Ari very well which is another reason why I loved it.

    Writing about mental illness is very hard. Even as a person whose whole family deals with metal illness, it took me almost six months to write a seven page short story about a girl and her depression. Of course I'm only fifteen and by no means a great writer, but even still. It's tough.

    I totally agree with you when it comes to All The Bright Places! I actually just wrote an essay on The Portrayal of Mental Illness in Young Adult Fiction and I used All The Bright Places as an example of a not-so-accurate representation of mental illness. I just found a lot of the aspects of the book to be problematic, such as how they portrayed therapy and let's not even talk about the "love heals mental illness"-trope. I'm happy to see you kinda feel the same way about it:)

      Thea Asmaro as someone with bipolar disorder, finch’s representation of it was actually accurate. i could relate so much. as with the “love cures mental illness” thing, i feel this book shows that it does Not, because of the ending where as finch gave up anyways. love CAN better a mental illness at times, and it shows that. the therapy thing was also quite accurate because its the SCHOOL’s therapists. school therapists arent usually the best, at least the ones ive gotten. as to if it was an independant therapist it would have been different.

    my list would be...
    1. The Fault In Our Stars: The writing was wonderful, I absolutely love John Green. But it is unbelievably overrated and it is just not memorable for me.
    2. Thirteen Reasons Why: This was so badly written. Every single aspect of the book was cliché and boring.
    3. Milk and Honey: I have definitely read much better poetry collections. This one was just dull to me.
    4. Looking for Alaska: Again, I love John Green, I think Let It Snow and Paper Towns are masterpieces. But this character, oh man, Alaska is so dislikable and annoying. I was so happy to finish the book because it bothered me so much.

      For me, The Fault in Our Stars was a pretty good book (at least at the time I read it) and I DNF'd Paper Towns because I felt like nothing much was happening other than teenagers being teenagers and I heard that the "good stuff" happens at the very end, which is not my cup of tea and also others were telling me the ending was bad so I'm not even going to bother. Someone recommended me to read "Milk and Honey" and I read it and enjoyed it. I bought "The Sun and her Flowers" and I couldn't finish the book because the entire poetry just went south for me. Then I reread the other book and ended up thinking it was mediocre than anything special.

    I liked All the Bright Places at first but after I became depressed myself it rubbed me the wrong way. It made me feel like I was doing something wrong due to not making any friends or having a boyfriend that could make me feel better and it made me feel like the end for me would be suicide. Thankfully I read It's Kind of a Funny Story which made me feel hopeful about getting better, and now know feel wonderful and a lot of that I attribute to this book.

    I feel you with The 5th Wave. I kept telling myself that I was loving it while I was reading - probably cause I just wanted to be aboard the hype bandwagon - but I forget a lot of details about the story within a month and, by the time The Infinite Sea came around, I remembered basically nothing except the main character's names. It didn't help that a lot of people said the second book kind of sucked. xD To me, The 5th Wave is a series that suffered because the author probably had a deadline to meet and didn't get to think about the plotline thoroughly and completely. Ah well. GREAT VIDEO! :D

    The Raven Boy series has a very intricate world. I've read other books by Maggie and I really love her writing because there's so much inside the story. The main plot as well as the side stories that are also going on.I totally loved those books so I want to say give it another try! I think they're the kind of books you need to read and not listen to because Maggie's writing is so whimsical and her worlds are complicated (in a good way!) I plan to re-read the series this year because there's so much depth to them it's hard to completely get everything in one read through.

    Mental illnesses are different for everyone. Just because it doesn't describe it how you went through it, doesn't mean it's not how someone else went through it. It doesn't make it a bad book just because it doesn't fit your expectations for how other people's mental health is. She wrote that for her boyfriend who killed himself when she was younger and I'm tired of people saying "it shouldn't have been written like this" when she literally was writing what happened.
    Again, just because it's not similar to your personal experiences, doesn't mean it's not how other people experience things. No offense but you're highly uneducated if you think everyone's mental illnesses are the same and should be talked about in the same way.

    • @emmmabooks
      @emmmabooks  7 років тому +18

      I never said everyone's experience is the same is mine, that is why I continually say in the video that I understand this book means a lot to other people and I'm genuinely happy they are able to relate to it!
      But it is entirely possible that a book can relate to one person and be bad representation to another. There are tons of books that I love and feel are accurate depictions of mental illness, whereas another finds it to be entirely inaccurate, and that is absolutely valid, that's just how personal interpretation works. And it is also possible for a book to be based on real life events, but be executed in a way that some people may consider to be negative. I don't believe I ever tried to dictate how the book should be written, I just expressed my concerns about it while also stating that I am aware it means a lot to others.
      I made it extremely clear in the video that while I found the book to be a bad depiction of mental illness (in general, not just based off of my own personal experiences) I am glad it was accurate and a piece of comfort for others. I'm sorry if you missed the point I was stressing so much.

    • @tracksuitrob5348
      @tracksuitrob5348 7 років тому +3

      You have a good point and I get that, I just took it the wrong way when I watched this last night. And I didn't specifically mean you for parts of this, I just kind of ranted about everything I've heard people saying. I get your point :) Sorry if I seemed a bit rude, that's not at all how I meant to be I just get really protective about things I like.
      I know everyone interprets things differently. that means some people won't like the things I do and I'm okay with that, I was just trying to stand up for it, if you know what I mean. Maybe just a bit too much.

    There is one book I honestly and truly hate with a passion. And I'm getting my English Lit degree to be a publisher, so I know I should be more unbiased and hate it because of critical errors vice the story itself. While this book is absolute trash in writing, how it's to be read, and the plot, that's not why I hate it. I hate it because it's an honestly dangerous book if applied to reality. That book is 50 Shades of Grey. Or rather, 50 Shades of Abuse. I just cannot stand it and don't understand how it got popular. In all honesty, if I could go back in time and was the publisher the author went to, I would've burned the manuscript. Or do something to make sure it was never published on a global rate.

      My beef with 50 Shades of Rape and Grooming ( sexual assaults, stalking, and raping aside) is the lack of research the author did when writing the book. That is NOT how a dominant is supposed to act, and promoting that is dangerous. You want him to be a damaged person, FINE. You want him to be an asshole who is controlling - FINE. You don't have him cross hard nos, you don't have him push boundaries already set. You don't fucken make it where it could easily be a Criminal Minds episode if he wasn't a wealthy asshole....He is the worst trope. I plan on writing a romance between a 'villain' and an MC....and he is the worst example, but the sad fact is that he isn't even a villain in 50 Shades. He's the fucken hero, apparently.

    • @asobimo5532

      Daddy Delicious no it's not? It's cringy fanfiction she wrote thinking the abusing male character will be fine because he is rich and sexy. BDSM community is nothing like that. There is respect in relationship and not obsession like he did. He literally didn't want her to talk to any other guy! Obsessive much? Also BDSM is not just ropes, sadist and masochists. It's relationship that is built on respect and consent AND most important of all TRUST! If you cannot trust your partner not to hurt you or to be able to stop when you use a safe word (which they did not have in the series) then that is not person you want to be in a relationship with. She wrote the book while researching so little of the subject she was writing on.

    I enjoyed watching you talk about your list. I’m not sure if you’ve read The Silver Swan by Amo Jones, but it’s at the top of my list. IMO It was all over the place. I finished it, but I don’t think I’ll be picking up the second book. Same with Paper Princess - I started the second book and couldn’t get past the third chapter. Maybe I will later, a lot of people say it’s good pretty good. But I’m glad I got them for free.
