She was officially ushered into the film music world by M G Radhakrishnan in 1979 in Malayalam cinema. Her vocal strength soon carried her into all realms of all South Indian languages, and later Hindi cinema as well, delivering super hits with all her renditions. ‘Chinna Kuyil Paadum’ from Poove Poochudava and ‘Paadariyen Padipariyen’ from Sindhu Bhairavi, which are timeless classics in Tamil cinema, owe their melody to her soothing voice. Similarly, her songs ‘Manjal Prasadavum’ from Nakhakshathangal in Malayalam, ‘Araluva Hoovugale’ from My Autograph in Kannada, and ‘Ninnu Kori’ from Gharshana in Telugu are also some of her other enduring successes.

Her seventh national award should have been for "Malargal Kaettaen" - still can't fathom how the national awards didn't give Rahman and Chitra an award for OK Kanmani. They gave Rahman one for the next Mani film Kaatru Veliyidai as compensation but forgot Chitra in the process.
do u really think ok kanmani deserves to get national award? there are better albums of him than this film..similarly chitra sang even more beautiful songs than the one u mentioned...if I go with ur words, spb would have gotten minimum 10 national awards..yesudas is talented overall but spb is better than him in film singing..

I think the legacy of great Tamizh female singers has stagnated at Chithra after the legends P Susheela, S Janaki, LRE, Vani Jayaram. These 5 are like our five fingers - all are unique and therefore important. (To be fair, I don't know much about Shreya since I haven't heard much. I did not include our old singers and Swarnalatha either).
