I think it's a combination of things that came together in a perfect storm - the initial mystery of the statue's origins and how it got to it's current location is exactly the type of mystery that fuels the Internet, then the revelation that the original owner had passed away but also learning why he put the statue there was a sweet twist. The momentum that information provided to worldwide interest in the story also showed how much random strangers could care about some random statue in the middle of nowhere, which itself only added to the momentum as it gave everyone a sense of belonging to a community geared towards a positive goal and with all of the political and social turmoil going on even at that time, it felt good to be part of something that wasn't fueled by or a response to hatred - we all were coming together from a sense of love for the Sonic franchise and a desire to see a statue owned by an unassuming family be restored in their grandfather's memory.
Basically, it's a bittersweet feel good story that brought a fandom together during a time of stress to help a generous family who deserves their time in the limelight for being stewards of a piece of video game history.

From looking at the pictures here is what I can tell:
    1. Seems like it was first sand blasted to strip it of its original paint before it actually got its full on restoration on the parts
    2. Some of the pictures show some sand and off lines meaning that some sort of plaster or other kind of material (mostly similar to what was originally made of) was then put in to plug up the craks, holes and damaged bits.
    3. The painting was done by parts and layers, meaning only one part was painted and let to dry befote going to a different part or color of tha statue.

from what I can see they used mesh, plaster, and wood fill which is easy to sand and paint over, after that they most likely sanded it smooth maybe added another coat and sanded it then added primer then paint. it looks like for the nose they attached with some form of epoxy or silicone caulking. after that I would assume they either painted it in a weather proof paint or they used normal paint and a weather proof clear coat over top of it. hope this is helpful or at least interesting, it is just me assuming from what most would probably use.

The fact that SEGA was looking into this basically says that they put more effort into this than they needed to. SEGA, by no means had to get itself involved or even acknowledge it. What I can only assume at this point is that if SEGA was looking into it, it would clearly be for advertising purposes, giving some social media attention to the project. I could also imagine if they did get involved that they'd remove the statue and put it on public display at their headquarters, but with some acknowledgement to the family that had it in their possession. Mainly because of what the family said, that it's a dangerous highway and they'd probably be afraid of their liability. But again, just a logical guess.

He covered up the cracks with mesh, covered them in putty, and covered everything in primer *(A type of liquid putty)*. Then the painting process would start with painters tape which makes the seams between colours more sharp. He most likely used multiple layers of glossy paint. For the nose I think he could’ve shaped a thick piece of acrylic or plastic, or he could’ve 3D printed a piece. (The nose was also covered in primer). He did a great job. This strategy is well known in construction and wall painting. It is typically not used in paintings as you would want to keep the artists image in the piece.

That mesh is used to hold plaster or bondo and the substance is most likely very strong. They would need to smooth it out by sanding it, the paint also would need sanded down possibly by a sand blaster. Once the painted surface is no longer smooth and is rough enough it is primed before painting.

The statue is made of fiberglass and resin. The repairs, although impromptu and in the elements, the results look awesome.

Yeah I don't get why he keeps adding that "sha" sound when he says the name. xD Japanese words are not hard to pronounce, really. They only have 5 vowel sounds (as opposed to 20 in English) and stuff is pronounced the same way it's written, with no emphasis on a syllable. There's a couple sticking points (learning the right "r" sound that doesn't exist in English, the consonant in "tsu", learning to drop the vowel a bit in trailing "u") but it's pretty easy. 90% of the pronunciation is near-identical to Spanish.

They may restore his statue but his image in the hellhole known as the internet will probably never change. RIP Sonic

I don't know about all of you...but in the next Sonic movie, I'd like to see Sonic on a snowboard doing THIS pose. That would be such a cool homage to this real life statue.

@@bababooty928 honestly, it had to be done. As said in the video, the owner said it was too risky to lower the statue to remove the supports, so they just re-painted the board completely and removed the front Sonic & Knuckles sticker.

I've never messed with plastic, but my dad's a big handyman carpenter repair guy type. The material put over the mesh on the underarm and the board looks like a type of plaster, expanding and reinforcing the material.

They should make some kind of tarp or covering over it, to better protect it from the elements.
But it's honestly really cool to see it restored like that!

The mesh is used for drywall mud usually, let it dry out (thanks to the temperature of the day the mud dried pretty quick) sanded it down and painted over it

I got an idea for an easter egg about the statue!
If the next Sonic game has an mountain stage, you could climb a bit and boost to the far left of the screen and BAM! Sonic statue. If you get close to it, some text saying "Dedicated to Yuji Kotera and all those who fell on *stage name here* ." will appear.
