- The St. Olaf Chapel Choir and St. Olaf Orchestra (Chrisopher Aspaas, conductor) perform "Behold, God the Lord" from the oratorio Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn.
This performance was part of the annual oratorio concert in Boe Memorial Chapel on the campus of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, April 19, 2009.

A lovely choir and orchestra and a fine performance! Nothing wrong with the tempo at all. Watch and listen to the whole performance, it is well worthwhile. All the soloists are good especially , "Elijah." Also, the recorded sound quality is of a high standard.
I will be attending my first live concert by the St. Olaf choir, next Wednesday (2/11/15) in Cincinnati. Looking forward to it.

@ATLKapellmeister I would agree. The tempo is slightly on the slow side and it takes a lot of life out of the drama of the music. The choir are trying their best but there just isn't enough to feed off. Great singing, though. Amazing diction, especially on the consonants, and a lovely blend of tone.
Love the tempo...any faster and I would have felt winded!

Very nice indeed, but I have heard many versions conducted at a brisker tempo.
after a year and coming back to this, I still think it's too slow. There's not "fire" in the sound. When we [WCC] sand this with the Philadelphia Orchestra this was much much but not crazy fast.
A very beautiful rendition of the piece. Mendelssohn's music can be difficult to master, and if the piece was sung any faster, it would have lost the flavor that he was attempting to achieve. With the slight dissonance and some unresolved chords in the way this was written, the choir did a remarkable job.

Recordings are a poor basis of tempo determination. One may not like the tempo but unless you were there in the performing space, your argument can be considered opinion rather than factual! You have to be there performing in the acoustic. Only the most expensive microphones allow us to have a glimpse(emphasis) of the acoustic the performers are performing in. Tempi will change from one performance venue to another and also depending on the forces which also influence the acoustic. The very best musicians know this. Gabrielli, Handel, Lauridsen and Whitacare are examples of a few musicians who understood this and used it to great effect!
It is often poor audio because the conductor doesn't like microphones on stage.
OK, in my opinion...IT'S TOO SLOW!
Another consideration on tempo: This is part of a large, multi-movement work of the 19th century. Tempi of the various movements relate to one another. Pulling out one movement fails to put it in tempo-context with the ones surrounding it.
