    I don t know. Did Mendelssohn approve the English version?

      Well let’s put it this way. As the work was premiered in Birmingham, England, sung in English and conducted by the composer, I guess he must have approved. 😊

    Trying hard to listen to some videos of Elijah as my wife's choir is due to perform Mendelssohn's Elijah next week. I've had to walk out of some of their shows as they do my head in. Choral music like this is torture for my ears - extremely narrow ear canals seem to mess up the phasing of sound getting to the ear drums. This video helps a bit played through a half decent mono speaker. Still can't understand a word being sung, which rather kills the point. Shame. I'm sure it's very good but, based on this, I'll have to give my wife's concert a miss. As I'm also something of an amateur Old Testament scholar who has looked at the passages in Hebrew, I'd love to be able to hear a dramatical musical presentation of it
