    Weird but funny detail: Kate, the protagonist from The 8 Pages that can't run for more then 11 inches without having an asthma attack is the same person as the crack addict that chases you endless through the mines.

      I do believe that's how she got her Creepypasta name which is very uncreative as it is Kate the Chaser.

      @VisserZer0 5 років тому +12

      In fact, I would even say Silent Hill arms its protagonists better than Resident Evil. Sure, you don't get grenade launchers and flamethrowers, but ammo is much more plentiful, and you get indestructible melee weapons that are powerful as well. It's fairly easy to play through Silent Hill and kill all enemies.

    • @HalfLifeOfHumanity
      @HalfLifeOfHumanity 5 років тому +4

      @@VisserZer0 Let's see.. For everyone complaining about Silent Hill not being as survival based as games that are too lazy to code combat and RATHER choose to just code an enemy that moves towards player location eternally forever at a set speed. Well, here are some examples that you completely fail to mention:
      For pure defenseless survival horror in Silent Hill there's.. The haunted house in Silent Hill 3 where you have to run or die from the gas attack. There is every encounter and battle with pyramid head in Silent Hill 2 where you cannot ever kill him EVER (for all the people who say its a viable option to kill every enemy in a game with unkillable enemies.. Do you not remember Silent Hill 2 and 4?). SH2 with the Creepers room. Silent Hill 4 had unkillable Ghosts and Walter Sullivan's invincibility. All you could do was run, LONG before Slender... Oftentimes where you would have to collect needed items (like pages) with those ghosts/Walter chasing you.. And then the even deadlier ghosts that came in the 2nd half of the game. The hauntings.. and I'm sure I am forgetting a LOT.
      Just like OP said it was quirky FREE game. Near no development or thought went into it when compared to games like Silent Hill and the team that made those first 4. So the fact is that Slender the 8 pages is basically a VERY accessible remake of the ghosts from Silent Hill.. collecting things you need in the level while the ONE ENEMY you cannot kill, the ghost, chases and kills you.
      Silent Hill was probably just not mentioned because it was a SERIOUS exception to the typical horror games of the day. But all these people trying to trivialize the quality of its survival elements sound SO FORCED and ludicrous.

    I'm kind of sad about how the oversaturation of copycats lead to some actually decent ideas becoming casualties. The one I remember the most was a greenlit, almost exactly Slender, game that was 4 player co-op versus either an AI or player controller Slender-esque monster. It had basically the same goal as Slender, but like x2 the amount of stuff you needed to find and a much larger / more complex map. You also had to talk through the in-game chats that the monster could read or hear if they were close enough. Seemed like a pretty unique idea until it got caught up in the large wave of games in development that basically stopped production to figure out how to market themselves as not a Slender game. Then Dead by Daylight came out 3 years ago and basically took away any chance of the game being particularly unique should it ever release. I think the game used to have another name, but it's called "Faceless" at the moment.

    Are you sure Amnesia: The Dark Descent doesn't deserve the credit for revitalizing the survival horror genre? It came out 2 years before Slender and kicked off the whole exaggerated reaction let's play genre that Slender merely contributed to.
    EDIT: I went and checked the views on both Pewdiepie's Amnesia videos and Slender video, and the Slender video does have about 5x more views than the Amnesia one (13 million compared to million), but it's still difficult to say Slender was THE GAME that revitalized the survival horror genre.

      I remember Amnesia being a bit of a critical daring. I played it and liked it. But it was a pc release (first console released was on 2016) so pretty much only small portion of people i.e. people who primarily game on PCs could have played it.
      Slenderman on the other hand, was a social phenomenon. Kids loved it, and so did young adults. As far as its sphere of influence goes, I'd say Slenderman is much greater. Afterall, it was a UA-cam ARG started in 2009 that is thought of as kicking off the slenderman popularity. The games are just riding on the bandwagon.
      Slenderman games are all pretty shit though. Maybe there's one or two mediocre ones, but all forgettable. But no doubt it Slenderman's already well-known brand that got most people who would not have even looked at a horror game to try it.

    The people talking up Amnesia aren't getting the point of the video, hes not saying that Slender was so good that it set an example of quality for horror games. His point was that it was so easily available that everyone played it, and so easy to replicate that lots of people made their own horror games. There's a difference between a revival of popularity and a revival of quality, and as he comments in the video, despite making horror games popular, it didn't inspire "good" content, which was its downfall.

    I thought RE4 was terrifying, but not for the usual reasons. Playing in pro mode means youre not really a super soldier anymore. You die extremely fast when youre not 100% focused. Makes you panic and scream at the silliest things. You feel like youre only just making it through every fight and it wears you down more and more. Its kinda like what they did with the latest RE games, except 4 was much more frantic. Still scary, but in a much more different way than usual horror.
    That being said, this is only the pro mode, so the vanilla game is kinda lacking in the horror (excluding the usual body horror and stuff)
    I also get why people find games like amnesia and outlast scary, but I feel really detached from the protagonist when I cant even TRY to fight back (even if its guaranteed to kill me anyway) and so a lot of the horror is missed for me. I tend to get more scared when I'm forced to face the horrible creature stalking me head-on.

    • @VisserZer0
      @VisserZer0 5 років тому +2

      A lot of tension from early survival horror games, Resident Evil in particular, came from decision making. Every time you encountered an enemy, you needed to asses the situation and determine if it was worth using supplies to take it out or not. There was a fair amount of strategy involved and you needed to think on your feet as you would if you were really in the protagonists' shoes. "Run and hide" horror almost completely eliminates this element. I think short sections in which the player is defenseless can work well to shake things up, but when the whole game is that way, it starts to feel lacking and contrived. The lack of a weapon doesn't make me feel afraid because I know the entire game was built to accommodate a defenseless player and that the solution will _always_ be to evade.

    to note on the 'actionizing of horror', it was less them doing the same thing over and over and more them dialing back on teh horror more and more over time. To the point where it was 'action game but with really creepy/messed up enemies'.
    EDIT: Another thing was that the games originally still did resource management to a degree. you got to the level of super-human ability simply because you survived long enough and managed things properly to ensure you had that level of ability in the first place.

    I find it boring when my only interaction with the spooky boi is when he kills me. So when I get caught my only reaction is "oops, guess I die now"
    Minecraft legit scares the shit out of me though. Sure I can fight, and the monsters aren't scary at face value, but when I'm carrying valuable stuff and the entire fucking world is out to kill me it can be really tense, and when the loud *TWANG* of a bow in the darkness knocks me off a ledge to my death I go through a full exesitential crisis.
    If a horror game could capture that exact experience it would no joke be the scariest game I've ever played.

      Well as human beings we all get scared of different things and I’m not going to try to invalidate your experience with the game, however it’s kinda oversimplifying it to call Slender a “Walking Simulator” since there are many elements at play that made this game successful.
      I’ll try to break down a few of these elements here to help you hopefully understand the other perspective a bit better:
      1. The environment: Right off the bat, your character is wandering through the dark with only a flashlight, that happens your only way of navigating the level and it’s on a limited battery. On top of that it only covers so much of your field of view, leaving everything beyond the small pool of light shrouded in mystery. The fog exemplifies this as it also restricts your effective range of vision.
      2. Audio: While not the only factor, sound design is crucial in horror, and in my opinion Mark J. Hadley nailed this aspect in both The Eight Pages and The Arrival. It works really well in building anticipation, the soundtrack being virtually nonexistent to begin with, then starting as a low drumbeat, then getting more and more intense as you progress. The jumpscare sound, while admittedly kinda done to death in the hundreds of copycat games that came after, was used effectively in this game. It would trigger your character’s ability to sprint, adding to the overall sense of urgency and desperation to escape, I don’t think it was particularly overused in this game but your opinion may be different to mine in that regard.
      3. The Slender Man: He looks fairly goofy if you get a good look at him up close, but at that point your screen is normally too full of static to notice the details on the model (or lack thereof). The fact that you have no actual way to defend against him, and even looking at him has negative effects creates a sense of helplessness. Getting a game over aside, having your vision and hearing obstructed while trying to run away from something can really pile onto panic you’re already feeling.
      You don’t always know where he is, but he always knows where you are. You can’t hide from him, yet he can appear anywhere at any time.
      4. Abilities: Like mentioned above, you can’t look at Slender Man too long, let alone fight against him. Your abilities are limited to walking, running, turning your flashlight on/off, and collecting pages (you can zoom as well but I haven’t found a scenario where this is useful).
      While you can run, you only have limited stamina and that drains very quickly, and while walking can recover it Slender Man gets faster with each page you collect, and it’s an instant game over if he touches you.
      Visibility is limited and the flashlight can only last so long, you can turn it off to save battery but in doing so risk losing your bearings and unwittingly putting yourself in a position to be cornered. Your vision can also be obstructed by static should you find yourself staring at Slender Man for a little too long which can also have this effect regardless of whether the flashlight is on or off.
      There’s also the fact that Slender Man could pop up anywhere and force you to change your direction or attempt to trap you, the bathrooms being one of the most infamous places given its narrow halls and dead ends.
      Woo this ended up being quite long, and there may be more that I wasn’t able to get to but I hope this is enough to help you understand at least some of the reasons why other people found Slender scary.
      You may notice a bit of overlap in some of the points and that’s mainly because a game is a composition of a series of elements and as such they are often deeply intertwined.

I mean I guess you survive by avoiding slender but if that was all you needed to be classified as a survival type game then technically every game is a survival game. I think you need some type of consumable resource management at the very least, maybe even some status effectors and weapons to manage. I was writing a Slenderman fan game from early in the SomethingAwful and Marble Hornets days, a few years before The Eight Pages. It was going to be a first-person story-driven mystery/investigation style thing, where a primary mechanic would be to seek through video tapes for evidence and so on, much like Marble Hornets, TribeTwelve, and other youtube ARG series' from back then. As the game progressed it would break the forth wall, for example by closing suddenly in the middle of scary sequences or putting files on your desktop that you needed to look at during play. It was a lot of really cool ideas that I had never seen in a game, and I thought it would be neat to make and share.
    Of course all of this was far too much for just high-schooler me to handle at the time, and it was never completed. As Eight Pages came out and gained popularity, I was disheartened because I knew my game would be seen as a ripoff. Eventually as everyone stopped taking Slenderman seriously as a concept, and games like imscared came out and did all of my metagame ideas to death, I realized there was no longer anything interesting about what I was trying to bring to the table. It wasn't even halfway done anyway, and it had been years, so I just gave up and deleted the project. I still wish that could have gone differently, but I guess I learned a valuable lesson. Or maybe I didn't, since all the games I've tried to write since then have gone more or less the same way.

    Okay but Slender the Arrival was very scary, and it had a great atmosphere and story to it, arguably better than the first game.

    Actually, my sister who made fun of me playing videogames, asked me if she could try slenderman
    Not amnesia, not any other game..
    So I agree with you, Slender made games mainstream for a while, and I mean really mainstream.
    It got to a point where she invited friends and after a while, someone would suggest play slender and everyone just turned off the lights.
    For me it was shocking, because at that time, gaming wasnt really that big and watching my sister who is really bad at gaming, playing a horror game? It was as bizarre as a white slim tall lurker in the woods.

    Around 2012 Unity came to Windows, before that it was Mac only. That’s why it blew up in popularity. I knew someone who worked for Dassauly who made a somewhat popular engine called Virtools, their main selling point was “we’re like Unity but in Windows” Once unity came to Windows soon after Dassault shuttered virtools

    There was one moment that got me in the game when I was playing with friends. When we found the teddy bear and played as the kid, when we ran off into the woods, and suddenly I realized the trees weren't trees.

    You were pretty close with the original Sender to The Arrival bridge. There was a demo for The Arrival which literally was just the original Slender in the updated engine, and that was essentially the "1.0" version in the chain.

    I still think the "Completely helpless painfully asthmatic protagonist" trope is a crutch that get's tiring after a short period.
    Atmosphere is the real deal when it comes to horror and even if you can fight back a game can still be tense and scary as long as the atmosphere is good, too many horror games also shove the monster in your face too fast and that takes away from the feeling of being stalked by some unknown horror.
    It's less offensive than the jumpscare crutch but I still prefer that focus be put on building up tension, great atmosphere and letting the players own imagination scare them.

    To be honest I think Amnesia and Slender actually killed horror as a genre. While I agree that games like Resident Evil 4 almost don't feel like horror, still there was games like Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil Zero, which made you think how to deal with monsters.
    What you do in first person horrors is basically walking around and that's it. You don't have choice for fighting monsters or running from them. Even if you have weapons to deal with scary stuff, devs will balance things is such way making sure weapons don't do much in a fight.
    It's basic stuff - create a walking simulator, add some darkness or fog or both, add some random monster that kill you in 1-3 hits and you have some cheap horror game.
    But I can say that there is first person horror games I like. Echo Night and Echo Night 2 on PS1. Yeah, old games and I just recently tried and beat second game two times in a row. Unlike Layers of Fear, I was invested saving people's souls rather than solving painter's past.

    Daylight was my favorite copycat, when I played it something funny happened, switching difficulty forces the difficulty to reverse, hard was easy and easy was hard, which difficulty is tied to ai aggression and how many documents you had to collect :3

    ''remember slender saving survival horror?'' no not really, i do remember amnesia saving survival horror and many devs used it as inspiration for their own games which lead to the creation of outlast, inspiring the direction of alien isolation, the PT demo and resident evil 7. there also were some freeware games popped up using the unity engine to capitalise on the resurgence of horror that amnesia created because amnesia videos were really popular. so i wouldn't say slender saved survival horror, it rid the waves that amnesia made, nothing more.
