Yeah mate I’m stoked to hear you got the HQ sorted at the end and hopefully getting the throttle sorted will get you into the 14’s! It’s been such a tease!
If you want that ute to squat and stop bouncing, loading it up on the hand brake just before you start the run. This will drop the arse as it's under load that way when you fully release the clutch it's already in full squat and not travelling the full length of the shock and abruptly bouncing back when bottomed. You ever launched a piss weak fwd car from a set of lights? Hand brake up, raise the revs, find the bite point of the clutch (at this stage the car is loaded) release hand brake while maintaining rpm and modulating the clutch. Do this properly and you get maximum grip while avoiding tramp and bouncing, yes it's harder on the clutch but it's a fuck tone nicer to all the other drive train components.
Around 1976 I had an HJ sedan, 253, 4 speed, bucket seats. The mechanic who done my servicing told me many times, not to sell it, as it went as well as any 308 he had serviced. While it was stock, I run it several times over a 5 mile run. Always just under 180 km/h Not sure how that is. The cam went in it, and my brother rebuit it. Cam job, Yella Tera heads. Cant remember all details. Latter on had HX suspension, heavy duty sway bars, heavy duty shocks. I think 8 inch wide wheels and tyres. It was glued to the road. Sadly that car was sold many years ago. I am 69 now and can no longer drive.
Hey Johnny We all have similar stories. I had the 74 HQ as my first car, it was straight as and being an apprentice panel beater i tidied it up and gave it a respectable pearl colour. Alas, I wrecked it a few times. Perhaps the reason for this is because it was such a prick of a car. No power steer, no rear disc brakes. Shitty 186 moto even tho it was the HC varient. First is the worst definetely applies to this model. Behind the times on everything but style, the HQ in my opinion is still the sexiest. 20 years on, I regret what happened to my Q. It hurts to talk about ;) I still drive a holden, but when this one goes tits up i will have to replace it with some foreign shit. I can get onboard with hybrid or EV but i would like it to be Aussie made. Strange days GMH fans. All the best.
You should have the back window up to allow the wind to breeze straight though and make less drag on the sandman. That is what I had to do when I had mine and it did make a huge difference on times.
My old boy had a HQ Monaro with a 253 in it. He worked the guts out of the engine and rebuilt the car from the ground up. That 253 revved to over 8500 rpm thanks to a few of the lil old school tricks...
@MightyMick88 copy that... Forgot where the tacho ended... My bad. But it did wrap the needle to the 7000rpm. I found it impressive out of a 253. But yeah, my bad on the rev count... 😬😬😬
Lovely. The VY is really starting to prove itself. What a great ideal to do a pub run integrated with a bit of drag racing. Reckon its harder work than it looks though.
Great effort by all 3 cars. Daniel's VY SS ute's backside was bouncing a fair bit. The rear springs really need to be harder & stiffer (That's what she said!). I'm pretty sure the wheels scrubbed the wheel arch at take-off. I still want to know how on earth the passenger side vent in the HQ doesn't spin madly. My old HQ Wagon & mates HQ's always had the passenger side vent spinning like mad!
A whole family of lousy drivers. God bless em. They are having fun. The launch is everything. Anytime you bog, or bounce, or lurch, you might as well just cruise the rest of it. If you can't get enough spin, you are seriously better off doing a high-revving heavy clutch slipping launch. You keep the revs from dropping until you finally get right off the clutch at about 40k's. You need to practice it, but you actually FEED IN MORE THROTTLE as you are COMING OFF THE CLUTCH. Of course the idea is you are keeping the rpm at about 3500 until the car catches up to the revs. When it's done right it's a smooth, strong pull off the line. It isn't the absolute fastest way to launch - but it's better than lurchy, messed-up violent launches. You don't have to dump the clutch. You don't have to dump the clutch. You don't have to dump the clutch. You don't have to dump the clutch. I'm no champion, but I did National Open hillclimbs for years in just that sort of "improved production" Holden. By the way, I love that you guys are keeping your Holdens looking clean and original and the drivelines and under-bonnet areas are authentic. PS - I had my pressure plates rebuilt with uprated springs that gave me 50% more clamping pressure so that it wouldn't fade doing heavy clutch-slip launches. Likewise my clutch plates had uprated centre springs in them. (But you don't actually need to uprate a clutch in good working condition to do these takeoffs occasionally.) *If you master the clutch slip launch it's surprisingly quick and you'll never break a diff or an axle* .... Don't go overboard on clamping pressure or the spring attachments in the pressure plate can fail.
Mate, the 253's love to rev, I would have pushed the 253 in 2nd and 3rd to at least 5500 RPM. Many moons ago, my LS Monaro 253 manual with Holley 650 4 barrel and extractors achieved a 13:57 at Calder Park raceway. I let it rev out in second and third to get it in the torque band then power band.
As a ex Owner of three HQs The one I bought in 93 was a rebuild, 202 extractors GTS grill and dash , racing steering wheel small gear stick , Beautiful Aussie car ,
G'day guys, What a great video. I'm so jealous. I'm going to have to get my 63 Beetle out on the track. So, thanks for sharing the experience. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne/Pakenham
About the Sniper. I have seen others talk about the Sniper and RF interference from the Dizzy. The ECU is so close to all that noise. Love all your videos
I think that is more applicable to Fords, with the dizzy at the front of the engine, everything else seems to have next to no trouble from what I have seen
Thx for the massive effort of getting all 3 cars to the end, great to see everyone's improvements over the 5 days. And now..... the Main Course of DC 2024.❤❤
Mate had a hq ss 253 big cam 650dp holley headers 3.36 gears which is the best size gears for this and he never lost a race to any 308 in fact he was faster then my heavily moded 351 cleveland. He did a 13.8 on the quarter with alot of wheelspin. Never seen a 253 like that again
Put some pedders suspension under the SS .Had a GTS with a 327 glide .The boy racers with leathers did not like me passing them on the Pacific Hwy Berowra to Brooklyn
Driven both stock and worked 308 and 253 monaro's in my day, 308 was nearly always faster, until i worked at Caltex rocklea in the early eighties, they had an 11 second 253 HG monaro, i think it was the fastest 253 in Aus at that time.
I had a 308 HQ van . 10thou off the heads, extractors M21 GB, blew away all holdens in encluding 350's, but the best was a XY 351 GT. . I still think the XY was an amazing car, i'd get to around about 125mph and the GT would just cruise past. Both great cars.
I no your not gonna see it but might sound stupid get a foot ball and put in the spring on the Ute so put it in flat than pump it up stops it from squatting so you just put like 3psi or whatever is best for it just gotta test it
Look into T Q 30 cam ❤❤❤ for 253 perfect 😂😂spins out 6500 reva but good grunt too ❤ did you know you can stroke a 253 to a 310 ❤ no joke 253 to a 286 or 310 I did a 310 stroker with heads ported to the max but that T Q 30 " cam good all rounda not to big but not to small
Yeah mate I’m stoked to hear you got the HQ sorted at the end and hopefully getting the throttle sorted will get you into the 14’s! It’s been such a tease!
I thought I was going to get bored but was right there with you on the travels and running the strip. Entertaining video guys!

Yep, totally agree mate, that's a low 10s car.
Stig blomquist used to launch quattros like that.

Stoked to see you guys show up in the Street Machine Drag Challenge video this morning. Now I get to watch this one!
Loved the coverage thanks
Loved this! All of it! Cheers
Great work all round and can't wait to see how the Q goes next time

A real kick ass episode as usual 👌
Great work by everyone. Glad you got the Q sorted 👍
What an awesome thing to do with your Dad!

So, thanks for sharing the experience.
✌️ Peace from Melbourne/Pakenham
Great vid guys... Spewin we didn't make it down for it... next year 🙌🏻
great effort guys
Daniels shifts are getting really quick, you are driving really well man! 11.2 is moving, you should be stoked on that!
That HQ sounds so bloody good 🔥

Figured I should subscribe before I watch. Because you know, Aussie muscle.
This looks like a dam good time👍
Thx for the massive effort of getting all 3 cars to the end, great to see everyone's improvements over the 5 days. And now..... the Main Course of DC 2024.❤❤
Looks like an awesome trip! That ute needs an msd two step, plug and play easy to setup
STRAYA 😀🤘👍
The 253 is your problem.. 350 will fix it
18:08 that gear change nath, nice work. Teach lil bro how to do that
Why ARE You ALL still sitting on the Line with the GREEN Light on..
Its not racing against each other, its trying to get your best time slip (ET) on the day, reaction time doesn't effect that.
Lol I've seen many much faster 253's then that all the time 😅 13.8 is slow af
Need to slip those clutches like you’re trying to break them to launch hard. Great videos
Wow weight transfer in that tonner is unreal lifts the front wheels of the deck
Put some pedders suspension under the SS .Had a GTS with a 327 glide .The boy racers with leathers did not like me passing them on the Pacific Hwy Berowra to Brooklyn
Yes to a turbo 202
Driven both stock and worked 308 and 253 monaro's in my day, 308 was nearly always faster, until i worked at Caltex rocklea in the early eighties, they had an 11 second 253 HG monaro, i think it was the fastest 253 in Aus at that time.
253 really? a 6 cylinder slant 6 would out run that shitbox, and thats a fact. Not in a drag but flat out.
Need a rip shifter for the Ute guys 🤘🏻
Used to know a fella who built beautiful 253s.
T5s are great... until they're not 😅 treat 3rd nicely and they'll treat you nicely in return
20 :33 lean it off more advanced ❤ and make cold air induction forced cold air in carby
Anyone know what engine that yellow xe has? 14:52
Couldn’t tell you off the top of my head mate
With a turboed motor you need to build up some revs before take-off, thats a low 10s car.
I had a 308 HQ van . 10thou off the heads, extractors M21 GB, blew away all holdens in encluding 350's, but the best was a XY 351 GT. . I still think the XY was an amazing car, i'd get to around about 125mph and the GT would just cruise past. Both great cars.
Autos would be a good choice for you rookies. Most manuals 3rd and 4th are neautralised.Release gear shift then up and down 3rd and 4th gear
No contest 308 it has bigger bores which means bigger valves they can both make good power though
Pop fart and crackle, just send it..
That needs to be in a shirt!!
If only Mackie would do the same in return and do a proper launch at the drags on slicks with his XY.... he won't... :P
I didn't catch what size donk is in the VY Ute, can someone enlighten me please?
What happened to the Falcon ? I thought it was ment to be there watching your build on it ????
The XE is currently a Drag Challenge
Haha Kingchrome driving gloves😂
What Track was that at
Wilby
Daniel needs a shift light
I no your not gonna see it but might sound stupid get a foot ball and put in the spring on the Ute so put it in flat than pump it up stops it from squatting so you just put like 3psi or whatever is best for it just gotta test it
It will squat but not as bad just set the psi in the ball afl ball is the best in both springs please do it
Look into T Q 30 cam ❤❤❤ for 253 perfect 😂😂spins out 6500 reva but good grunt too ❤ did you know you can stroke a 253 to a 310 ❤ no joke 253 to a 286 or 310 I did a 310 stroker with heads ported to the max but that T Q 30 " cam good all rounda not to big but not to small
Had both the 308 wins everyday when standard.
You're not comparing apples with apples. The HZ is a van, not a sedan. It also should, by law, have anti emission gear connected up.
geez that ute has a terrible arse end
HQ just needs another 1000 RPM ? Air leak?
The standard 253 was so disappointing it was shit the 202 could bet it
What debate?
the sandman's probably worth 100k
If this video was meant to be 253 vs 308, why did the video focus on the white commodore so much?!
Geezus... learn clutch control and suspension setups...
And yes... 30 years building custom valved shocks, struts, etc. I know what I talking about. Glad to help you
253 was a ripper, the performance of a 6 with the economy of an 8....
Didnt want to press like coz 969... 69... Nice 😅😂 but here we go 💁 sorry guys
Buy a Ford 😂
WHO CARES. ILL BETT ON THE GREY FERGY
Sniper are rubbish
What a bunch of crap drivers! Please don’t destroy nice cars from being a hack.
