Rob Thomas, in my humble opinion, is one of the mainstream songwriters that keeps Rock moving forward in an honest form. Thanks Rob. And, if you ever need an electrician for a home or office project done, I'm your guy. metro from nc
One of the greatest songwriters of my generation. So gifted lyrically. MB20 songs were part of the soundtrack of my life. Thanks for everything Rob. Keep it up my brother.
DAMN is he smart. Not only is he's my favorite artist but this tops it off. No regrets for my only child having the middle name Thomas. What an amazing career.
By far my #1 favorite artist. I have all his stuff, Matchbox Twenty, Solo & even Tabitha's Secret. I listen to them all beginning to end & there isn't a song I skip. The only artist for which I do this. Never stop Rob!! There are people like me anxiously awaiting the next one! BTW, I heard him sing an INXS song in concert & he killed it. The year he toured with the Goo Goo Dolls I saw him 3 times. It was my favorite tour! His solo stuff is so great. Love me some Rob Thomas music!! 🎶🎸🎼🎵
I still buy his CDs. I absolutely love everything about Rob Thomas. His music is almost the soundtrack to my life. I even have an unwell tattoo on my ankle. It means so much to me. Thank you Rob for everything you do.
I really relate to If you're gone. When I 1st heard it the meaning was different than for me then now. It's weird that some song's mean different meanings when you feel it to when you hear it when you're in an different situation.
I still love Matchbox Twenty. Saw them in concert in Mt Pleasant Michigan September 20, 2024. They were amazing! Rob Thomas still sounds like they did years ago! Love all their songs and videos. They conveyed so much to me and loved “Long Day”!
Rob is forever humble, but he never did get the credit he deserved for "Smooth". He's such a talented singer/songwriter. As much as he feels his work on their first album was sub par compared to today, I am over 60 and been a MB20/Rob Thomas fan since day one...Yourself Or Someone Like You is still my favorite to this day and is my go to Matchbox album. Maybe polished does not always necessarily mean "better", just different.
I have been able to see Rob Thomas in concert twice and Carlos Santana once. I was hopeful that Santana would perform Smooth. He didn't. The first time I saw Rob Thomas was with Matchbox Twenty. I was crossing my fingers for Smooth. Nope. BUT the second time I saw Rob Thomas (Chip Tooth Smile tour) he said "I wrote the damn song; I can sing it" and then he belted out Smooth. It was AWESOME!
Nancy I am about to turn 45 and I love Him and MB20! My go to song 🎶 is Push and same favorite album! He is so very humble because he wrote the songs for an entire era!♥️🎶🥰
I was 8 years old when I saw Carlos Santana at Woodstock. It was so awesome and amazing at the same time. To see Carlos now knowing when I 1st saw him he was so young and the way he played his guitar was awesome and amazing at that time August 15th to the 19th 1969. Then following Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 since the beginning about 23 years I think is along time to be following GREAT music. When I can't sleep I listen to music and I listen to all kinds but there's 1 thing that I need to say that growing up in the Era of the 60's and 70's we had the great music and the greatest cars.
I have loved this guy and his band since I heard Long Day. I've seen them/him in concert more times than I can even remember. His music has morphed a bit over time but he has never left his style. Tabitha's Secret day one man. Keep on making music mister because we may be few and far between these days but we are still here! Especially those of us that grew up in the 80s. You're still here though man. ❤
even now in 2022, nearly every day I still listen to MB20 and I still think they are amazing songs and are true to what many of us are still feeling. Edit 12:08 It's Funny how Rob says Long day failed, it is probably one the best songs they made, to me anyways.
I was there in Birmingham when he was talking about being there, it was amazing and I was obsessed with them from then on.. it makes me so happy to think that he was being real when he told us what a great crowd we were that night and how surprised he was that we knew all the words to all of his songs already and what it meant to him! Maybe I'm fangirling a little bit but whatever I'm good LOL... wish I could see him live again!!
The best interview ever!! Talked about his songs and gave some insight. That’s exactly what die hard fans want. I love love his song Long Day. After I heard that song in 96, went out and bought the CD!!!
I can't believe I just finished this youtube without skip it, even I had to repeat some of the minutes because Rob Thomas is such a cool guy and very inspiring
He’s a very talented songwriter and vocalist. He’s been my fav band since Tabitha’s Secret! His music makes me feel so good all the time! He’s my go to mood changer. He will always be my #1
Rob Thomas, last of the great musicians and of a time period that will never be matched. He has such great talent from his band to individuality. Back when you needed talent to reach something. What a casual guy for the success he has achieved. A true dying breed, up there with Green Day and Disturbed and Three Days Grace to name a few. As my dad says, "our dads got to live the last of the best music generation". Brings me to tears thinking of the depth of this interview.... Think about it.
Dredyn Cade i hope you don’t lose complete hope in the new music scenes!! there are quite a few great new bands that just don’t get the recognition they deserve like Highly Suspect and The Districts. good new music is just a little harder to find these days but it’s still out there!!
I know this is an older video but I just found it. What a great interview with two guys that seemed to actually have a great time doing it. As for Rob Thomas, I saw him many times at The Other Place in Daytona Beach in his band Tabitha's Secret when they first played 3am. Nice guy who was always ready with a handshake and a smile. Very humble and friendly.
I have been blessed to see and meet Rob several times. I believe the last time I saw Rob was in 2017. He is still that friendly, down-to-earth and humble. One of my faves. Though I will say all the other MB20 members are the same way as well and all the members of his band when he performs solo. Frankie Romano and Matt Beck are the ones I am most familiar with. He surrounds himself with the like and I am sure that contributes to their long career.
Long before I ever had a smartphone or long term access to the internet, I used to listen to matchbox 20 and wonder what the story/influences were to Robs songs were. I imagined what it wud be like to see interviews like this with a lot of different bands/music artists. Its weird when a anticipation becomes real
Love this interview! I have been a fan since day 1! Rob is such an amazing singer/songwriter. Sounds as good live as he does recorded. Glad I came across this interview!
Incredible live! I remember hearing the acoustic version of 3am on the radio in Phoenix and a listener called in and he said I was driving and had to pull over, this guy is amazing! Agree!!
Was lucky enough to see Rob's solo tour come to Cincy last summer (sixth row, thank you). When he tee'd up Smooth he said, sometimes I get in trouble for playing this song I'm about to play. But I don't care because I F**king wrote." and I immediately knew he was about to shred. Best show I've ever seen.
It's so crazy to me that "Long Day" somehow "failed". It's always been my favorite Matchbox Twenty song. There are no words for how that song makes me feel, and it's done it for over 20 years.
Thomas has always seemed like a good dude. Moved to Orlando area in 95 and Tabitha's Secret & then MB20 were starting to pop in the area back then, along with 7 Mary 3on WJRR. Longday is to this day my favorite of theirs. First time I heard it you could tell they had something special.
I love Rob Thomas. I mostly love because of his strong love for his wife and his son. I could never love and respect a man that would put me or any other woman first before the love of his children.
When i watch interviews and like podcast with people, i wish i could ask that person a question. And what was on my mind is where did the inspiration for real world come from musically? That riff is so killer in that song, love that track
Having worked in El Barrio in the eighties I will say that nothing I have ever heard even comes close to evoking the feeling of East Harlem in the summer. In the interview Thomas downplays the significance of that song. He shouldn't...it is a great song.
Can you imagine being in that convertible though... you’re listening to what’s about to be a smash hit and by chance the lead singer on the track is standing just a few feet away, and you may never even have a clue.
Im so happy for this interviewer and these questions. But at the same time, I feel bad for Rob. He wants to make new music and be known for new music while all anyone wants to hear and talk about or ask questions about is Matchbox. Thats gotta feel defeating,
in all due respect, i love wallflowers and have always been a fan, but the interviewer is a little off and sounded like it was an insult to the wallflower if being mistaken as the matchbox twenty or vice versa. matchbox twenty sold 40M+ albums, more top 10 songs, although they failed to win a grammy. still, he's talking to Rob, multiple solo grammy winner & a songwriter HOF (first recipient of Songwriters Hall of Fame Hal David Starlight Award), and still making record. he could have said it's flattering, although they are not equal. but to sound offended is so off.
Ronny is talking about fake news 😲😬🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 that's some quality leadership 🙄 he's lucky he's so adorable ! And ultimately gonna end up pregnant ! Obviously he's a pretty little thang seriously he's adorable - he loves his wife soooooooo much - that's cool ! Rare
I really appreciate this interviewer. He has intelligent questions and doesn't interrupt.
Rob Thomas, in my humble opinion, is one of the mainstream songwriters that keeps Rock moving forward in an honest form. Thanks Rob. And, if you ever need an electrician for a home or office project done, I'm your guy. metro from nc
rob is actually very wise, i get this vibe from him when he talks he really has a well rounded idea of what hes talking about
Agree, he seems very wise and very thoughtful.
Totally agree 🙏

I adore Rob. So humbled. Hasn't aged a day, just as handsome now as 20 years ago. He is just adorable. Yup, here I am... 2022.
😍

" soundtrack to my Life" well said and I couldn't agree more thank you
Same!
Absolutely he wrote the sound track for my life too!!! So well said Anna!❤️
I really relate to If you're gone. When I 1st heard it the meaning was different than for me then now. It's weird that some song's mean different meanings when you feel it to when you hear it when you're in an different situation.

@sheilaholtbeltagy5539 I grew up on Classic Rock too, the best music ever, but still Matchbox Twenty is my favorite band.
Little Wonders from Meet the Robinsons is low-key one of his best, most heartfelt songs.
Great mention! Absolutely love that song. The emotion in his voice and lyrics in it just whisk you away into another world.
Absolutely agree with you. My brother introduced me to it a few months ago and it went right into my main playlist.
I have loved this guy and his band since I heard Long Day. I've seen them/him in concert more times than I can even remember. His music has morphed a bit over time but he has never left his style. My God the nostalgia of the 90s. Take me back.

My wife and I were there at Boutwell Auditorium that night as well. I don't think we stayed for the LemonHeads....lol
the fact that Rob said INXS in this interview makes me love him even more!
Talk about losing someone too soon...miss Michael Hutchence so much...what a talent!
I love this interview. Just a casual conversation between two people about music and how it changed over time.
The best interview ever!! Talked about his songs and gave some insight. That’s exactly what die hard fans want. I love love his song Long Day. After I heard that song in 96, went out and bought the CD!!!

I agree about Jacob! 🤘🏽 I bought the Wallflowers CD when it first came out! 🤘🏽
Stumbled across this, watched through, couldn't look away - what a great interview
amazing interview. what a guy. excellent chat! thanks a lot!
Related to Matchbox 20, and like a lot of their songs, but love Smooth - now as much as then. It'll always be a favorite song. It's fun!

Great interview.
i love rob and his music!! Greetings from Germany :)
I'll always love Matchbox Twenty 💯🤘,Rob will always be an amazing artist. My kids were literally babies when Matchbox Twenty started out.
How does he look younger 😮love Rob Thomas one of the greatest artists of all time
So crazy to think that Long Day failed when it came out. That song is one of my favorites, and that whole album is my go-to for Matchbox 20
What a legend!!!!

Getting old doesn't suck, unless you're talking about the aches and pains.
Can you imagine being in that convertible though... you’re listening to what’s about to be a smash hit and by chance the lead singer on the track is standing just a few feet away, and you may never even have a clue.
Great interview 👍
The movie, Meet the Robinsons" was made for Rob"s soundtrack. I've always know that.
@8:52 "Running Against The Ghost Of Myself". ..... now that is a damn good song title right there.
Or a album. I could see it on an album cover.
I'm glad someone else noticed. It stopped me in my tracks when he said that. Lol. A songwriter brain is always listening for quotes like that.
Awesome, thanks for sharing that. Great minds think alike. 🙂@@lucasbeebe9634

Unwell is unmatched 😔
Why wasn’t this 4 hours long
They talk about "Classic Rock Radio". Is that a radio station, a website, or a social media service that this old man doesn't know about?
I still have MB CDs in my house right now !!! LOL
who doesn't like long day, that's one of my fav 😶😶
Wish he’d write a book
