Place a straight pin across your buttonhole to protect the end threads from being cut by the seam ripper when opening the hole. It's a great trick! Most of us aren't as talented as Sarah in using a seam ripper. Great demo.
OMG..... I'VE BEEN SEWING FOR YEARS MAKING SMALL STUFF.....I NEVER KNEW HOW TO USE THIS...LOL I WAS USING THE ZIGZAG .... THANK YOU!!!! I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS & HOW YOU EXPLAIN STUFF.... THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you!! I was altering a wrap dress to be maternity friendly. I attached a piece of fabric in the front that goes behind the top layer of the wrap. I needed a way to help the extra piece stay up, so I added a button hole. Now the string goes through the hole in the new fabric and the hole in the original dress. Perfect!
Hi Sarah I bought a new Janome about three years ago specifically for the automatic buttonhole as I was making my daughter's wedding favours and these needed two bottonholes each for ribbon to feed through - what a difference it made to have this feature. Previous to this my New Home machine had manual and was about 30 years old! My question is what method/attachment can I use to make a very large oversize buttonhole - say 2-3 inches or bigger. I wish there was a forum on youtube so that I could pass my thanks on to everyone whose videos I have watched and have given me so many tips, techniques and projects that will keep me busy. THANK YOU.
I have tried to use the button hole foot followed all directions still can't get it to work. I am going to just punch a slit in the material and double stitch it by hand. Tired of trying to fiqure it out.
Omygoodness! I have been trying and trying to figure this out by reading the instructions that came with my machine, without success. This video helped me finally figure it out. Thank You!
Ooo my..i have a sofia that cane with one n really stressed on how to get the right size hole. . That is so clever n thank you so much for sharing..u really showed an old dog a new trick..i started sewing in the 60"s on the old singers n paid 2k for this machine that i barely understand..woohoo i can do buttons now!!
VERY HELPFUL! I was making a skirt with buttons and didn't want to hand sew i watched other videos and not 1 was as helpful as this video, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS
TY! Wow I have to say ty for being thorough in the beginning because the manual and other tutorials missed showing where the push arm should sit and why it comes down where it does. I couldn't make it work until I found you!
Waooo Waooo waooo! You just saved me a whole lot of stress! Your button presser is exactly as mine. I just finished doing my button holes that has given me headache 🙃since. Thank you so very much for this tutorial. ❤. God bless you.
I am a newbie in sewing. My Brother sewing machine manual doesn't show how to use different feet that come with the machine. Thank you for all your illustrative & informative videos.
Hi Ramona! I just have to ask a couple basic questions before we dive into seeing what's wrong. Are the feed dogs up and did you pull down the buttonhole lever as far as possible?
Depends on a sewing machine, there are sewing machine that are automatic (just 1 setting) just like she has and did, she just started it. And there are sewing machine that every sides has setting. Different setting for top, bottom, left side, and right side. Other sewing machine has no button hole maker setting at all. Hehehe
Thanks i always had problems with buttons but with this machine it had a button hole maker on it but i was always to worried that i could do it until i watch you video. Thanks so much for helping me make buttons hole. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Madam can you please tell which stitch width dial, stitch length dial to keep on which number. I have kept stitch display on buttonhole stitch. My machine dosent go forward. It stays stitching on same point.
Help!! I have a Brother XL2800i. I understand and can get the presser foot instruction great. when it sews and makes the first row, then needle stays in same place and makes a ball/string. none of the how-to videos talk about the machine settings which I feel is my problem.
Thank you so much!! Very easy to follow but please tell people to change their stitch on the machine. I kept getting an error message before I finally realized that!
I have one, too. If you don't use the right setting and you don't pull the lever down all the way (I really yank it down firmly) it won't work right. The buttonholer must be the one for Brother automatic buttonhole sewing machines, it needs to 'catch' the buttonhole lever you have to yank down firmly. The manual is not as clear on all of this as I would have wished - I just had to experiment for awhile until I figured it out. You'll get it, it just takes a bit of practice. And, remember, you have to have chosen one of the buttonhole settings FIRST or the silly thing won't work right, no matter what you do. Be nice if that were clearer in the instructions.
hi sara, i still can't get the hang of this foot. i followed all your directions but my machine just sews in one spot. so my questions are..... what is your upper tension set on? what size length stitch on the top dial is it set on? and things like that. all my manual says is "set it on F" .... thanks.... hoping this is my problem
I appreciate you video and it helped me get started on sewing a button hole. I have been experiencing the same problem that many others here are having and that is that my machine will not make a button hole but just keeps stitching in the same place, creating a mound of thread. The parts that you were using in your video with your brother machine are the same as mine. I have a brother XR7700 machine. I have followed the manual as well but still end up with the same results. Because so many have the same problem there must be a reason this happening. I would really appreciate any help you can give me. Otherwise I am going to go the singer store and I really don't want to have to do that for something that should be really simple to do. Thanks.
I'm making burlap bags to put these expensive bulbs in. thought adding a strip of cloth at the top, a few buttonholes and run a shoestring through it would make it close nicely and stronger. Be sure that you're using a buttonhole stitch on your machine. I've seen some others and not all machines use the same number for the same stitch. I'm surprised how simple it is to do with a computerized machine.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the videos. Just purchased a Brother xl2600i so I could learn to sew, and the instruction manual simply says 'attach the buttonhole foot'.
Help please. I cannot sew a buttonhole. I have a Brother cs6000i. I put the button size I want in. The white lever of the buttonhole foot is in front of the pull down lever. I start sewing and it just keeps going backwards then stops and keeps sewing in the same spot. I also keep having my thread break. What am I doing wrong.
I think the problem is that she does not point out that you must set the machine to the buttonhole style you want. This was happening to me the other day and I couldn't figure it out til I realized the machine was still set to straight stitch.
On your sewing machine do you have a little picture that shows buttonhole? If so, turn to that picture or however your machine switches from different stitches etc. No way for me to send picture to show you. I have a Kenmore from 1990’s 385 series and it also has it’s own buttonhole machine attachment, but haven’t been able to get it to work right, so I use the same attachment that is shown here. Best Wishes!
@@samanthalimmm Probably a little late to let you know, but I just had this same problem - I wish I could post a photo here to explain the solution. I have the brother strong and tough and I’m trying to do a button home and have everything to the right settings I believe but when I’m sewing the buttonhole, it only does one the one outline layers and then immediately starts sewing straight and my manual says nothing about it. Any tips?
How do you know where to position the foot on the marking that is drawn on the fabric. Would it be at the top or the bottom of the marking? Not sure how to explain what I mean. Sorry! By the way I love your nails and just proves that nails don't have to be long to be really beautiful.

Hi, I always have a problem when it comes to buttonholes the thing is when I mark the buttonholes where I want them to be but it starts & ends not in the place I marked 😭 It will be a great help Can you please help me Is there any tips to get all my buttonholes where I wish for rather than in different places

Hi, like Christina Castillejo, I have used the Brother XL2600i model manual and for some reason when I thread the machine and push my foot down, the dog feet don't move. I believe it has something to do with either the settings on the machine that it suggests (pattern 1 for buttonhole, F for fine stitching) or the buttonhole foot itself (it only has one little arm that sticks out when most buttonhole feet I have seen have two, but it doesn't seem broken). Can you please give me some tips on what I should be troubleshooting? For your info, I have already re-threaded the machine and the tension is not an issue. The dog feet move when I am sewing on other settings so they work, they just don't move on these settings but this is what the manual says to use and I am not sure how to change the settings so I still get a clean, neat buttonhole.
Very clear&informative
Im sorry, this video is from ELEVEN YEARS AGO!? wow. Eleven years ago you posted this. And it helped me tremendously now. I love the internet

Beautiful buttonholes. Thank you. After 50 years of sewing, I am only now venturing into buttonholes, and your video was very helpful.
Automatic button hole stitches save you so much headache! I hated hand sewing those! Thanks for these amazing how-to videos!
You've just saved me, I have a lot of these to do and could not figure it out from the booklet. Thank you for making this :-)
You are the QUEEN of how to install and use various feet. This one terrified me but I’ve no choice but give it a try.
Bless you!

I was just curious on how to sew a button hole and didn’t even realize that there was a foot for it. Turns out my sewing machine came with it.
Thank you so much. A really clear and concise video. I have always been afraid of buttonholes. Not anymore!

Thank you!
Ha, I didn't think to use the automatic stitch feature, would be a lot easier! ^ ^
I haven't used a button foot since 2015 when I bought my machine.
All that I can say is, I love your channel! Getting back into sewing clothes (over 40 years) and I doing a binge on your channel. Thank you for this!

Thanks for this. Much more helpful than the official Brother ‘help’ video 👍😁

Calgary24682468 My pleasure! Glad to help and welcome to the wonderful world of sewing!
You've done the best job of explaining this. Thank you so much 🙏🏿 God bless you.
LOL - no worries! We never really stop learning the art of sewing. =D
Hi! We use the Brother LB6800PRW in all of our videos. Awesome machine!
Hi Ramona! I just have to ask a couple basic questions before we dive into seeing what's wrong. Are the feed dogs up and did you pull down the buttonhole lever as far as possible?
I also had these questions.
Hi! Try moving your tension from a 0 up to a 3 and let me know if that works better.
WHAT STITCH SETTINGS DO I USE I'M SO LOST 😭😭
Not me being late.. I use 21!

You are right
The most important part is the setting on top that most people don’t bother to show
Brother XR9500PRW- use 34-42 button hole stitch
Good luck!
I have a Brother SE400 and I had trouble sewing a button hold until I added stabilizer on the back. With the stabilizer this worked great.
So glad it worked!
Thanks!!! Most informative video so far.
good. I wasted an hour trying to make a button hole. Now I know how to use the buttonhole lever. Thanks
Glad to hear our video helped!
Well glad you showed the stop arm coming down. The directions for button holes on my 4423 did not show that step.
Your tutorials are SOOOOOOO helpful, thank you!!!!
Very clear and straight to the point video. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Easy to follow for a beginner!!!
Thanks i always had problems with buttons but with this machine it had a button hole maker on it but i was always to worried that i could do it until i watch you video. Thanks so much for helping me make buttons hole. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Your fingernails are awesome! (Also very helpful video, thank you!)
I thank you for showing me how to do the button hole. I had forgot how to used it.
my sewing machine is not computerized this way. Thanks for posting though. I'll look for another tutorial for manual stitching buttonhole sewing.
Wonderful Directions! Success first time out! Thank You!
Thank you. Really helpful to watch and learn 👍🏻
Hi! What model singer do you have? I'll look it up and see what's going on.
Which Machine is this ??
I believe Sara was using a Brother LB6800.
wow amazing tutorial! very simple yet informative! thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Oh no! What machine do you have? I'll look up the manual and see what's going on.
Madam can you please tell which stitch width dial, stitch length dial to keep on which number. I have kept stitch display on buttonhole stitch. My machine dosent go forward. It stays stitching on same point.
Happened to me as well. Make sure you have used the buttonhole lever and try increasing the stitch width from F to 1.
Did you drop your feed dogs recently?
Hi, I didn't hear the mention of the stitch settings. Is that automatically set once the foot is in place. If not, what settings should I use?
I Didnt know how to sew buttonholes but after wathing this i know to sew buttonholes thank you😀💕
I'm sorry you are having trouble! Which machine do you have?
You have made a wonderful buttonhole, but how do you adjust the stitch length and width selector as well as the thread tension selector? thank you ++
May I know what kind of sewing machine you used
This is an older video (2012); however, I believe Sarah used the Brother LB6800. :)
I just did it! It was so exciting! Thank you!
Nice job! 😊

Awesome video! Im learning more about the features that my sewing machine has. Thanks alot!
Thank you for this. I have a question: do I need to use embroidery thread when using knit fabric?
THANK YOU! I've been reading my machine manual over and over and could not get it.
This was very helpful. Thank you was pleased with presentation.
Very helpful video. Thank you
Hi! Do you know the model number of your kenmore? I can use that to find the proper buttonhole foot for your machine.
Thank you so much!! Very easy to follow but please tell people to change their stitch on the machine. I kept getting an error message before I finally realized that!
Thank you for mentioning that!
Hi Tiffany! Did you get your machine make a successful buttonhole?
What would I do without you girls?!!! Thanks!!!
Do you have to change the stitch at all? Like to zig zag or anything else?
Ive got a Brother project runway, going crazy trying to figure it out!
I have one, too. If you don't use the right setting and you don't pull the lever down all the way (I really yank it down firmly) it won't work right. That’s pretty slick
What must you do when you want a huge buttonhole? For example to make a belt and you need a large opening?
Thank you for checking. We emailed some info back and forth earlier this month. Still looking for a solution!
How much is this
It depends on the one needed for your machine. May I have your make and model? 😊
Love you guys, you always solve my problems or questions, good job.☺
Yippy! I'm so glad that we can help! Thanks for watching. 😊
Thank you! I now know how to use this foot!!
Hi and thank you. It is model 4423 heavy duty. Thanks so much :)

Are you pulling your tab down on side of your machine ? If you forget to pull it down your buttonhole will not stitch
Thanks so much for an easy video for us that haven't used a modern one before 😂💜🎊💜

Will the buttonhole foot work on the Kenmore 158. 13412 if it doesn't have the lever for the buttonhole size.
holy moly! i had no idea what that foot was for on my sewing machine now I know

What other adjustment we need? tension of stitch for back & forth?
You REALLY helped clear up our questions about the different types of feet for this machine! I'm a subscriber!😊👍💃🇺🇸

Why using a topstitch needle instead of an embroidery one with the embroidery thread?
Thank you for this! Making a dress and wanted to the slidy thing was for. makes it easier the get the right hole size!

Not sure how to explain what I mean. Sorry! By the way I love your nails and just proves that nails don't have to be long to be really beautiful.
The marking is positioned in line with the red lines on the foot and will be the bottom of your buttonhole :)
Many thanks :)
Hi thank you so much for showing use the different types of feet is there a number on them so we can know whish one is which
You're so welcome! Some feet are differentiated by a letter; however, normally, one needs to look up the part number. but it starts & ends not in the place I marked 😭
It will be a great help Can you please help me Is there any tips to get all my buttonholes where I wish for rather than in different places
This tool would work on any machine? Or a specific type of machine?
Does putting the button on the part help to determine how big the hole must be?
It does. It is a really convenient buttonholer. Just note, not every buttonhole foot looks the same. It is always recommended to consult your manual on how to do it on your particular machine. :)
Are there any specifications on tension, thread length and stitch type for this?
