Over the years, I've talked a lot about the divisive sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, known as The Legend of Korra. I've become known for my old video defending the show from the barrage of unfair criticism that it seemed to receive, but since that video my tune has actually changed a bit. The Legend of Korra is not a perfect show by any means, but its nowhere close to the worst thing ever. Today, I'll be detailing all the fantastic things that can be found in The Legend of Korra and why I believe that it is a worthy successor to the Avatar legacy. #thelegendofkorra #korra

I am willing to say S3-S4 are fine/good at the very least but the writing for S1-S2 is an absolute insult to character arc writing.
Your defense of Korra learning airbending ignores previously established rules both in ATLA and in the show itself. Airbending is all about detachment (opposite of being attached to Mako) and being indirect. We get a whole episode in ATLA where Aang has to learn earthbending, the opposite of airbending, by standing his ground and his entire philosophy is to find a way around things. In LOK itself we're shown that airbending is about circular movements and slithering through obstacles through footwork. Korra only just learns some of the footwork by the time Amon takes her bending away, and she definitely hasn't learned the philosophy of working her way around obstacles and being clever like Aang is prone to doing. It's simply extremely rushed development and an unearned powerup no matter which way you look at it, because you simply don't go from not being able to bend at all to being able to generate multiple gusts of wind powerful enough to be used in combat. We see in ATLA that whenever Aang learned to bend water, fire, or earth, he could only manipulate tiny portions of the element at a time. And in real life, people just don't get good in a literal blink of an eye.
On top of that, because mastery is air is not tied to the stuff you said, there's no evidence she overcame any of the emotional obstacles that you listed. That's all headcannon. She simply wanted to protect Mako, and no, there's no evidence she "realized" she loved Mako because she's made her attachment to him quite clear (so clear that she forcibly kissed a man who said he wasn't interested and had a girlfriend, try excusing THAT).
I don't see Korra learning patience either. Where was her patience when she hatched her brilliant plan to accuse Amon without evidence in front of his supporters? Where was her patience in Season 2 when she got fed up with Tenzin babying her again? These are the larger opportunities to show long term patience in comparison to the just "waiting for the time to strike" which is a pretty small scale example. It doesn't take a patient person to realize that when you're surrounded by the enemy you need to find your time to escape. You even admit that she struggles with it throughout the series, so I wouldn't even count this as a piece of character growth for her in S1.
Her growth being reset at the start of S2 does make sense, but it also makes her super unlikable as a character because we've already seen an entire season of her being cocky, brash, disrespectful, and impulsive, and she only defeated Amon because she caught him by surprise on accident. After the whole ordeal with disrespecting Tenzin, getting humiliated/dusted by Amon's surprise attack, fumbling with the public perception of benders, apologizing to Tenzin, and being brought to her lowest point, she doesn't learn an OUNCE of humility. Again it DOES MAKE SENSE that she would be cocky, but that's not an EXCUSE for her behavior. But Ok, say we run with that, she then does stuff like physically threatening a judge that, for all she knows, is completely innocent.
I don't see how it takes Korra learning about Wan for her to learn the importance of the avatar and that her powers aren't trivial... her predecessor had to end a 100 year war...?
Her decision to open the spirit portals is based on what? A few hours at most interacting with spirits? What evidence are we shown in the show that there will never be peace between spirits and humans when the two worlds are separated? there hasn't been major stirrings before, even in ATLA. How does she surmise from the story of Wan that she should open the spirit portals? Her decision is actually incredibly dangerous because she has little knowledge of the potential repercussions this could have on the entire world.
Tenzin's powerup speech to her was also another piece of poor character writing. Her problem is clearly that she believes in herself too much, and that's not mutually exclusive with her defensively lashing out at her loved ones because they do things that make her insecure. It is precisely because they perturb her self image of herself as a competent person that she lashes out at them so viciously. A person who does not believe in herself would not find a new teacher that seemingly recognizes her spiritual potential. How can she simultaneously be cocky at the start of S2, by your own admission, and also not believe in herself? Her teenage whining is "why don't they think I can do it?" as opposed to "I can't do it, I dont have what it takes." She needs a piece of humble pie, not someone telling her that who she is is what makes her powerful. Because guess what? Her most prominent traits that define her, her headstrong nature, are put on full nasty display throughout the season as she wrongs her parents, wrongs Mako, and wrongly trusts her uncle against his dad's warning, not to mention tactless so she's unable to negotiate help for her tribe in the civil war. Her headstrong nature is clearly NOT what makes her an effective avatar.
But even beyond all that, it's a shounen powerup speech. Korra was unable to even enter the spirit world without help just a few moments before, and now because she believes in herself she can all the sudden do the ridiculous feat that her spiritual master just did, and fight with him on even ground?
Not to mention she gets totally bailed out by Jinora even then.
And her suddenly be able to control her emotions because Iroh told her so is similarly rushed and contrived character development. If she couldn't control herself after all of S1 and apologizing to both her parents and Mako (before blowing up in Mako's face again and kicking a desk 6 ft in the air), why is she suddenly able to do it because someone she's never met before told her to do so? Because she's in the spirit realm?

Doesn’t matter, it still doesn’t make any sense whatsoever within the established rules of the series. Korra literally had all her chakra paths you need to bend blocked, meaning that it is literally impossible to bend. Her chakra paths were physically blocked by blood bending. Energy bending can only give or remove bending spiritually, as in, the ability to bend any element is removed from their spirit. Sure, aang could’ve given Korra whatever element she wanted even ones she previously had never learned, that’s totally possible within the rules…..she just wouldn’t be able to bend any of them until her chakra paths were opened which would require a water bender who could blood bend which as we know, did not happen. She just got given a free pass by the writers even if it breaks lore. The directors commentaries literally prove that the writers didn’t actually understand how it worked, they just thought “hmmm she didn’t know air bending but she is the avatar so she has the ability to bend all elements so I guess Amon only took the elements she knew. Viola, now she can bend air no problem because Amon only took the ones she knew”
Like….thats not how aang’s energy bending works and that’s not how blood bending or chakra paths work. Korra literally invented a brand new rule just because the writers didn’t want to make her suffer any consequences.

@@zzodysseuszz The removing bending with bloodbending altogether just doesn't make any sense. If it was truly done with bloodbending how does katara not sense it? Cuz its a full moon? Seems cheap.
How does aang give it back, does he unblock the chi pools even though it's a physical block?
How does korra get airbending when her ability to bend the other 3 is nonexistent? Can amon not sense the specific chakra pool for air? If thats the case then what was he gonna do when he had tenzin and his 3 kids tied up? Just bluff? He had to have been able to sense and block the air chakra otherwise that was just a ruse. So then how is korra's left unchanged? And how in God's name does korra learn to airbend? There's no mentality change connected to the element... no style change connected to the movement, just desperation. If it was intense desperation they were going for the avatar state coulda made more sense, since for aang it was always linked to intense emotion and distress. But she just randomly is able to bend air? Why? There's so much lore that is broken by TLOK's book 1 and 2 its so hard to rewatch it man

No insulting the people who disagree with you (aside from some ironic jokes). No bias. No flashy editing. No drama. Just pure, raw analysis with plenty of citations to back up your point.
This may be one of the most important videos for the TLOK online community. It shuts up the people who accuse the characters of being flat while also acknowledging flaws in good faith. When we love something, we critique it not to bring it down, but because we see ways it could be even better.

That being said the love diamond killed me and I hate it why that existed in the first season I have no clue. Love triangle are already hard to pull off in an effective way without annoying an audience but it was arguably a diamond cause Bolin was in their briefly with his crush and I’m like yo just keep it to Korra, Asami, Mako and let them figure it out which to be fair they did do pretty quickly but like it was still a love triangle at that point. THIS!! How the heck is youtube just recommending me this now!?
The Legend of Korra was a show I grew up with in my teens, and It's always meant so much to me. Both as a women, and a young queer person at the time, Korra hit home in a way most other things just...didn't. In a way that even ATLA didn't. That sort of relatability was what drew me to the show, but I think that in the end, it was the themes that helped me stay along for the ride.
Korra is a wonderful show, and I truly believe people would not be half as hard on it if it wasn't connected to ATLA. Because It's a sequel, people constantly compare it to ATLA, even when the comparisons aren't needed to view the show. Of course Korra isn't as good, but it frankly was never going to be and didn't *need* to be. Korra is it's own property, and It stands strong! I love all of the characters, I adore the world changes, and the animation style of Korra is probably my favorite animation style of all time.
We can all acknowledge Korra for it's flaws, and praise it for it's wins. At the end of the day; It's up to you if you let Korra's flaws outweigh the good in it. And I for one, can easily look past whatever flaws it has, because It's a show that simply made me feel good in a tumultuous time. I respect it greatly for that, and I hella respect the writers and directors for doing what they could to deliver us a piece of their creative work. I only hope that the next avatar show (whatever it may be,) will have a better opportunity to thrive.

13:00 I’ve been trying to explain this for a while and I figured it out. Korras main problem with airbending was her spiritual block. She overcame that spiritual block a few episodes before when she directed tapped into aangs memories, showing that she had connected to the past avatars. After that, unlocking airbending itself was just a matter of time
People hate it because it happened at a convenient time but korra had a lot of build up plus she had been training in airbending for several weeks to months, much longer than aang took to unlock his elements.

the problem they gave us for why korra could not airbend was spiritual ineptitude, after she was able to connect with aang, that was no longer a problem.
it was only a matter of time before she did it, she just did it at a convenient time.
she actually spent more time learning airbending than aang learned on all three of his elements combined. so it was expected by that point.

she earns it more than aang earns any of his elements. aang spent a day at most learning an element and that was earth. all he had to do was show some backbone. he instantly got waterbending and he was literally given firebending by jeong jeong.
her losing the other elements didn't unlock her airbending. her need to protect her friend allowed her to unlock it. by that time she had already shown that she was spiritual and had trained for weeks to months, so it only took a catalyst

About Korrasami, yeah, it wasn't the best representation there was, but it was pretty good all things considered, and there was no ill intent on the creators. However, Korrasami would also pave the way for MORE LGBT representation in Avatar, with a great example of this being the pairing of Rangi and Kyoshi in the Kyoshi books. Which IS DONE SO MUCH BETTER! The chemestry between the two is established very early on, there's a clear arc of them growing closer and falling in love with each other. You get to see them ACTUALY KISSING! JUST LIKE ANY OTHER COUPLE IN THE FRANCHISE! (You know, kinda important if you wanna treat a homosexual relationship as equal to a heterosexual relationship.) And honestly, to me they feel like some of the best romantic material I've seen in this franchise. I'd say it's even better than some relationships in the original ATLA show. (Some, not all. After all, Sokka did date the MOON!)

It's basically a visual representation of someone attaining enlightenment. Going from that to manifesting a Perfect Susano'o to battle the Jinchuriki of Avatar Satan... You can't tell me that's not jumping the shark even a little bit. The way Korra handles spirits in general either retcons or flat out ignores the pre-established lore of TLA. I enjoyed books 3 and 4, and book 1 had its moments, but aside from Varrick, Iroh, Avatar Wan, some of the stuff with Aang's kids, and a few comedic moments with Eska and Bolin, book 2 was utter garbage and makes little to no sense.

"Bolin is autistic and I'll die on that hill. He's not Chris Chan autistic tho, he's just 0.5 autism"
While there absolutely is a fundamental misunderstanding of how the autism spectrum actually works in this sentence, with the implication of Chris Chan being "More autistic" than Bolin, which is the classic outdated belief that treats the spectrum as a line where you can be less or more autistic. The truth is that the spectrum is really more like a wheel, we are all so different from one another it's more like a set of traits in which we are more or less impaired on, but no real measure of "More or Less" autistic.... because that literally doesn't exist, you're either autistic or your not, even if one is a person who requires more support to function and the other is more like me who can seemingly function ok without much support despite still being very much disabled.
Now keep in mind, I'm not trying to throw shade at Matt here, as I personally believe this was just a joke. But I just thought it would be fun to share for those who are curious. As for Bolin being autistic, as an autistic guy, I kinda see where you're comming, specially with how often he misses social cues, but I believe he's really just socially awkward.

certain traits are more important than others in socialization, therefore within that color wheel of autism there is also a gradient in how severe the disorder can be based on the importance of the impaired trait to social interaction.
This suggest a line of mild to terrible. There's a clear difference between Chan and people with less obvious autism. It's not hard to see it. It goes from mild to bad because of the importance of the impaired trait

@@hanburgundy4317 I think the problem is how Korra oversimplified how spirits act, and how it subjects them to this "light-dark" dichotomy. There was a much greater level of mystique to spirits in TLA, and they also had much more specific motivations, whether it was the Painted Lady protecting her lake and its people, Heibei protecting his forest but not its people, Ko's desire to gather more faces, Won Shi Tong's initial desire to share knowledge with humans in his library, and subsequent retreat back the spirit world when that knowledge was misused. Not to mention Twi and La's shedding of their immortality to stay in the physical world and become the moon and ocean. Korra also makes spirits much more numerous and same-y, and the whole conflict between Raava and Vaatu and their ability to influence all spirits flies in the face of how these spirits act. To say nothing of the swamp. Duality has always played a big role in Avatar, but in TLA the spirits were beyond just light and dark or good and evil, in fact they likely existed outside human conventions of morality and understanding. I don't like going with the whole "We are beyond your comprehension" schtick, but when talking about beings as abstract as spirits, it kind of rings true, and the way Korra handles them just removes their complexity. I also just didn't like how their inner light or darkness could be so easily swayed by Korra's, let alone anyone's emotional state whereas in TLA, spirits required much more specific circumstances to be angered or pacified. Heibei wasn't calmed by some random waterbending technique, he was calmed when Aang showed him the acorn and gave him hope that his forest would eventually recover.

Haven't actually watched the video yet... As I'm planning on enjoying this four hours but I want to say this before I start.....
The more Avatar universe content I consume, the more video essays I watch, and the more times I've watched both series.... I realized my opinion on Alta has been pretty stagnant but my views on Korra is constantly changing. I enjoyed it the first time, was really irritated with it the second time but found myself defending it constantly... I'm a queer woman and this was an important show for representation no matter how slight it was. Korra crawled so shows like Shira could run and Owl house could FLY. And recently I've realized something. I don't engage with AlTA the way I engage with Korra. I spend way more time analyzing the themes just casually in my head and reevaluating characters constantly. I love Alta, and it's special, but it fundamentally is a simpler show.
I even don't hate the Giant Spirit Kaiju anymore. Like that was really my biggest problem with it from the beginning but I have come to recognize that I just don't think I understood it. I don't think I got the mechanics and it felt like it came out of nowhere... But it didn't. I didn't even realize Spirit was another element until it was explained to me. It just isn't that explicit in the show they don't call it that. (And I've read a lot of elemental magic series. There's always a fifth unknown element called spirit... It's like a whole trope... )
People who don't like Korra, like the people who really hate it, I truly believe don't understand it. I think it goes over their head. 😅 It wasn't a good show for what it was given and blah blah blah. It's just a good show. And in a lot of ways it's way better than the original in the ways it handles darker themes.
Alta it's like a comfort blanket. Korra is the knife you keep by your bed due to ptsd. It's fundamentally unfair to compare those two things... Even though arguably both give a certain kind of comfort.
Sure we all got the blanket when we were kids and we love it, it has sentimental value. But the knife acknowledges the harsh realities of the real world.
(Look I know my analogy is a little bit weird and not everyone is going to keep a knife by their bed... But I hope you can see what I mean.)

To be fair, ATLA never says when or how a bender discovers their power, but that if you're a bender, you could bend as a child, as well. If you think martial arts are required to bend, I point you to Aang doing pushups with his breath, Toph making a to-scale replica of the city complete with little people just by punching the ground, Iroh breathing fire, and Mad King Bumi bending _with his face_ . The martial art forms help make bending an extension of your being to help you better control your Chi, but the power to bend is yours.

In an age where we get a lackluster sequel after a lackluster sequel (looking at you, Disney Star Wars), Korra has balls and is not afraid to make huge changes in the universe. I JUST REWATCHED KORRA LAST WEEK.
And aside from a few things bother me (Suyin’s behaviors, the constant blaming of korra for many things out of her control, and especially how they handled the love triangle at the very start (part of me really wanted to see what a romance of bolin and korra would have evolved to but this is a nitpick.)
But yeah the show is amazing. Animation is glorious.
    Story is solid.
Season 2 was a weak point but every other season was very strong. (I actually do think season two was fine, but definitely the weakest season)
    Amazing villains
Korra as a character (I related to a lot of her more internal struggles and was able to connect more with her than Aang)
And honestly it’s a pretty funny show.
Only thing I wish greatly was that the avatar state was animated to be as powerful as season 2 in spectacle. Though I understand why it wasn’t.
And one hot take: I actually like the decision to make her lose the past lives.
Edit) 2:22:10 actually. I think Sokka is actually the one that states that Yakonne had a mutation that allowed him to blood bend without a full moon.
Keep in mind I rewatched recently so I don’t think I misremembering. I think they did explain it was a genetic mutation. Hence the murder suicide at the end is essentially getting rid of that mutation. Not for good of course, but still worth noting. Rewatch the scenes when korra was getting visions of Aang dealing with that bloodbender. I think someone does outright say it’s a mutation.
Additionally, the characters do question how Amon is able to take away bending with his blood bending. It just isn’t touched on for too long. The characters just kinda assume it’s the blood bending that allowed him to find a way to take away bending. But I guess it is still up for theory since it’s never outright confirmed.

Guess I might have conflated it with korra videos I was watching around that time.
      But yeah you are right.
I guess it’s supposed to be heavily implied in that case. Wish there was a direct answer. But considering it’s a trait that was passed on to his sons with 100% success, and everyone makes it a big deal of both Amon and tarlock being Yakone’s son and using that as the basis for explanation as to why they can bloodbend without a full moon, I guess I just have to assume it’s a genetic mutation.
Since “rare skill” seems to be used a lot when it pertains to bending abilities. If combustion bending is assumed to be genetic then I guess blood bending without a full moon is naturally another genetic outlier.

@@terrakage4462 My headcanon is that Yakone's technique is only known by Yakone. He *could* have taught it to other waterbenders, but why would he?
The series doesn't seem to take a clear stand on the question of "can all x benders do all x bending if they get the right training and mental state?". It seems to be a mystery for the very people in the world.
But there seems to be more evidence than not that all benders of a given element are biologically equally capable of doing that type of bending. Zuko *could* lightningbend, he just needs to get the mental state right. Bolin *could* metal bend (Su thinks everyone can learn), but for whatever *mental* reason it just doesn't come to him.
Thus, every waterbender should be able to mind-bloodbend if only they knew Yakone's trick. Which is probably something that requires some level of cruelty and/or lack of empathy that would make it impossible for most.
Here's an example of what Yakone's trick could be: "you don't use your mind, you use your tongue to bend and your very blood-filled lungs. You don't target the blood on the whole body of your enemy, only that inside the nervous system, thus you have much less to move and the enemy is paralized out of the inability of their own muscles to respond, not just strength"

13:00 I always saw Korra unlocking Air-bending as a result of how Bending, Chi-Blocking, and Water-bending works
Korra's flow of chi and energy in her body and psyche didn't currently let her use her air-bending.
Water-ending (and Fire-bending) has the ability to manipulate people's chi, so when Amon Blood-bent her he flipped her Chi from 3 on 1 off, to 1 on 3 off.
Katara couldn't fix her bending because she's so vehemently against Blood-bending that she couldn't manipulate Chi to that degree.
Amon's Chi-blocking is more permanent than the physical Chi-blocking because he reroutes those Chi flows, whereas physical Chi-blocking crudely and hastily blocks those channels but they eventually flow past that forced closing.

I don't think that Varrick is as much as villian in book 2 as people usually attribute him and it's mostly because of the current strong ant-capitalist feeling going on that wasn't really that strong back there. Varrick seems to be written to be as Chaotic Neutral as possible and as moral as Jack Sparrow.
In my opinion, Varrick *didn't* warmonger against the north just make more money. He did it because he himself is a Water tribe Southerner and because he is the extreme opposite to Bolin regarding naivete. Varrick is a cynic and thus can see transparently into manipulators and people with hidden agendas. He *knew* from the very start that Unalaq was bad news. He knew in a way similar to how Lex Luthor says "I know evil".
Of course, he is not in some selfless quest to save the South, he is just protecting his home.
His biggest moral flaw doesn't seem to be that he doesn't care about the damage he causes, it seems to be that he doesn't *think* much about that damage or can easily find an excuse. I'm sure that if we asked the old Varrick if he felt bad about framing Mako he would say something like "nah, kid's a detective. They won't treat him bad. And if he doesn't find a job afterwards I can offer him one for my company. A win-win!"

One of the biggest issues people have with Korra is the Raava/Vaatu thing. But I was randomly watching clips of ATLA and I realized the dragons that Zuko and Aang meet are a physical representation of Raava/Vaatu. They “balance” one another.
This also reminded me of Iroh’s element speech that he gives to Zuko! Each element representing something. Aang brought in freedom. Korra brought in change. This new Earth Avatar is gonna bring in stability. 👀
There’s so many good conversation points for Korra! She’s not only relatable but she’s a testament that even though she goes through so many crises, she still gets up and tries again! Even when she wants to give up at times or is at her lowest point.
That scene when she gets her bending back gets me so emotional. My heart just swells up with happiness.

I'm going to add to this reply in real time because there's a good chance it might get really long, & UA-cam has a bad habit of eating my longer posts:
~20-22:00: This really puts how many things were so great about Book 2 into perspective, which is no mean feat given how often people want to focus on the negatives of Book 2, of which there were a lot. But as many problems as I have with it, so many things are just so fucking good. Tenzin's been told basically all season that he can't teach Korra what she needs to know anymore, & he's had to come to terms with that. So, it's such a great moment when Kya's all "Okay, NOW she needs you," & the advice he gives her is something he never could've given her in Book 1 because his own arc in Book 2 was about learning it. It's just so good, even if it leads to something completely insane. Story of Book 2, really.
~25:00: It just occurred to me that Katara & Toph both helping Korra's recovery with very different interpretations of "positive reinforcement" mirrors how they train Aang in Bitter Work.
~29:00: "The Zaheer scene is bad because you shouldn't go to your abuser for help" is such a bad, strawman argument. One, Korra went there with the intention of confronting Zaheer, & no psychologist will ever tell you you're just not allowed to do that. It's acknowledged this can be an important step in regaining control as long as appropriate cautions are taken. Two, calling Zaheer "Korra's abuser" is projecting this weird domestic violence context on them that just doesn't apply. It's a closer comparison to say they're like veterans who fought on the opposite side of a war. Still not exact, but a much closer dynamic. This is why, to Korra's surprise, Zaheer understands what she's going through in a way someone who didn't live through it can't, & now that the fight is over, & they have a common interest, he's willing to offer his help. Help that, as Zaheer points out, she doesn't have any other options for. Which leads to the final point: As you alluded to, the idea of "this scene makes me uncomfy, so it's bad" is just incredibly dumb. There's so much dramatic tension wrapped up in this scene for so many reasons. Does Zaheer have an ulterior motive? Who is winning the debate? What are the consequences of this meeting going to be, & is it just going to make Korra worse? A really underappreciated thing about this scene is how much the power dynamic changes as it plays out. When Korra tells him Kuvira is his fault, it just cuts straight to his core & completely changes his entire demeanor. When you get right down to it, the only reason Zaheer decided to help her is that she did what she couldn't do when they met at Xai Bau's grove in Book 3: She proved him wrong using his own ideals.
To keep going along a similar idea, a lot of people balk at the idea that "suffering made Korra a better person." For my part, I would've liked the show to lean more on the framing that one has to decide what their own suffering means to them & their life narrative--which the show does to an extent--but also, it's very strange to me that people act so surprised it would say the former. It's no secret the show is heavily inspired by themes of Eastern religion, & "suffering happens for a reason" is an incredibly common religious idea. Arguably its main selling point is that it gives people a sense that they can make sense out of the senseless.
~36:00: Korra getting amnesia is very on-the-nose symbolism of "Korra doesn't know the origins of the Avatar, & since she sees herself as the Avatar, she doesn't know who she is." But it doesn't really contribute to the story beyond that except for enabling more love triangle shenanigans.
~1:03:00: So far, I'm really feeling like there's pros & cons to each version of the video. That might've been the best analysis for Mako & Bolin I've ever seen. While the points about Asami weren't unfair, I think the older video made more of a positive case for her character. Though it also doesn't deal with Hiroshi's return in Book 4, which is important in its own right.
~2:34:00: Thank Christ someone else likes the detective story.
"Is naturepunk a thing?" Solarpunk. Or, if you're looking for primitive technology a la The Flinstones, stonepunk.
~3:16:00: Not trying to nitpick every little thing, but "the final shot was so ambiguous the creators needed to come out & confirm it" isn't accurate. The confirmation was maybe 12 hours after the finale, & was clearly always planned just to make absolutely sure everyone understood where the series stood. And while I obviously couldn't have seen every discussion, at least on the Avatar Wiki thread for the finale premiere, everyone knew what the scene meant. Even the people who hated the idea of Korrasami were lamenting how obviously canon it was. The "well maybe it actually means something else" takes didn't start until shortly before the confirmation announcements.
I lived 10,000 lifetimes before finally reaching the end of the video.

I agree so much with that last point. It was very apparent to me that korrasami was canon just from the conversation they had at Varrick and Zhu Li's wedding and every second after that just further confirmed it. My cousin and I also texted about the finale the day it aired and he came to the same conclusion as me and this was before Mike and Bryan's posts. I never thought we really "needed" confirmation from the creators because it was pretty obvious from what was shown on screen. This is actually demonstrated by all the reaction videos that came out during that time, the reactors very clearly understood the romantic nature of korrasami's relationship as they watched it. Whether people hated it or loved it, they knew what it was and the people who didn't sounded more like they were in denial about it than genuinely ignorant (at least from what I've seen). The idea that the final shot is in any way ambiguous is honestly baffling to me, they literally had Korra and Asami longingly glance at each other, focused on them hold each other's hands and framed them in a pose and shot that mirrors Varrick and Zhu Li's wedding stance (calling back to an explicitly romantic gesture from just a few scenes ago) while they gaze into each other's eyes. What possible reason would they have for choosing these shots if it's not romantic? How could it possibly be read any other way? The intention was clear as day, even with the network restrictions.
I also don't think it qualifies as queerbaiting. Queerbaiting is a deliberate thing that creators do where they hint (whether on or off screen) at the possibility of queer characters or storylines, in order to gain a queer audience, with no actual intention to follow through. This would make no sense for lok, why would they queerbait in the last episode? They want to attract a queer audience for a non-existent next season? No korrasami isn't queerbait, it's a censored relationship that's mostly relegated to subtext. Except for that final shot. That was just text.

Legend of Korra is a Tv show with the most complicated legacy I can really think of. It is either the most beloved animated series of the previous decade. That was a wonderful continuation of the original series. Or it is considered to be animated garbage. That shitted all over Avatar the Last Airbender. As someone who loves Avatar the Last Airbender and still believes the first show is better. Despite that belief though. I genuinely also really enjoy/love-ish the Legend of Korra. Plus I do know that despite a less great show than its predecessor. Korra every now and then. Did manage to accomplish goals/feats. That the original show didn’t. At the end of the day. I still really enjoy The Legend of Korra. Objective issues/problems and all.

I don't know if Ill watch the whole video, but I wanna say this but I will say going back and watching Korra is a treat, watching it as a kid I remember doging on it as well (I did start liking it by the third season), but I've been recently re-watching all Avatar both Aang and Korra with my younger brothers Korras story is honestly so good. I'm almost in my mid twenties, I think anybody who watchs Korra should watch again after they experienced life a little and matured it'll give you a new insight whether the show is bad or not won't matter.
Like everybody complaining that it's chorus fault that the old avatars are gone you're so stupid when you watch it again and see how helpless and overpowered she was she literally was trying so hard and let's not forget she felt every hit rava felt too.

  • @husky3g
    @husky3g 6 місяців тому +4

I like Korra but there were a lot of really bad plot choices. Korrasami will never make sense to me. I will always think it's stupid, regardless of what people say and what was "hinted" (very poorly if that was their intention) through the series. Secondly, the last season choosing to have the villain who apparently had the "strongest will" to unite the Earth Kingdom just abandon their plans because the Avatar said "that's not nice" is a cop-out. I loved the Zahir arc and the revival of the air nation. I also loved the Avatar Wan and spirit arc stuff as well but some of the writing and pacing was just so bad for the later seasons (mainly due to budget cuts by Nickelodeon, not necessarily the fault of the showrunners)
It could have been great, instead it was alright. LoK is okay, definitely not amazing. It definitely cannot measure up to the original series in any way but it is an interesting series in it's own right.

How does Korrasami make less sense than other avatar couples? They had a very close friendship and it's fair to say that Asami is the closest person to Korra as of book 4 so why is it so unbelievable that she eventually develops feelings for her? It's not like the finale claimed they were in love this entire time, they're just now starting a romantic relationship. They have years of friendship and camaraderie to build off of, unlike the "instant love" thing most avatar couples go for. What "hints" did we get for Sokka and Suki getting together? Suki's 1st appearance: establish mutual respect and friendship between Suki and Sokka, Suki's 2nd appearance: Sokka and Suki get together. Where'd that come from? Not like they spent any time together off screen or anything between those two episodes either. The only "hint" we had that this was gonna happen was that Sokka blushed when Suki gave him a kiss on the cheek but I don't see how that's different to how Korra blushed when Asami complimented her appearance. Other than we're predisposed to expect heterosexual romance in media but not the other way around, which explains why Korra randomly sprouting feelings for Mako in book 1 didn't feel as jarring. Could there have been more effort to put in more hints for Korrasami? sure. But I just don't see how it doesn't "make sense." I mean you did say that you're gonna think it's stupid no matter what people say so I guess you think it's stupid for no reason other than you want to? You do you I guess.

@3:22:05 I don’t think AtLA is less political than LoK, the perils of imperialism and colonialism were central to the plot. It just seems more overt in LoK because it featured a new ideology each season, flavor-of-the-week style. It's probably just another product of Nick ordering the show piecemeal.
Great video overall though, excellent take on every nuance of this fantastic show!

  • @DarthTingleBinks

Because it literally just came as I watching the video, I wanted to present my thoughts on the moment.
Amon uses a combination of blood bending and chi blocking to remove one's ability bend permanently, but chi blocking merely blocks one's connection between their chi and their element. At the time Korra got her bending taken away her chi was only connected to water, earth, and fire. Her connection to air was at that time nonexistent. So there was no connection for Amon to block. Thus she was able to form that connection to air out of desperation.
And it is still a powerful moment, if not more powerful with that explanation in mind. Korra had previously thought she would never be able to air bend. And when Amon removed her bending, both of them took it as a certainty she wouldn't be able to bend ever again, and she accepted that air bending would NEVER be possible for her. But then she did it and it not only surprised Amon (which is why he didn't blood bend her in the moment, as he saw no reason to; she was powerless to him), but also gave her strength at a time she thought she was powerless.
Edit: Also, Milo is the best and funniest character in all of Avatar. Not even a competition. Sokka and Toph are pretty funny in the original show, but for how little screentime Milo gets in comparison, he is consistently funnier. The ratio of good comedy to screetime is much higher for Milo than any other character.
Edit 2: I honestly think that Korra'a loss of connection to the previous Avatars could make the new show more interesting. The new Avatar will look to her for guidance, but she herself singlehandedly destroyed the legacy of the Avatar (though not intentionally). It will probably affect how not only she guides the new Avatar, but the new Avatar views her. It could creat for very interesting conversations between the two. Being a novice (and more of a hobbyist writer) myself, I couldn't possibly write such a scene if I tried, but Bryan and Michael definitely can, and I can guarantee they'll be some of the most impactful scenes in the show.

My interpretation of Zaheer in season 4 is not that he’s ideologically changed at all, but rather he just wants to end the fascism going on in the earth kingdom currently that’s it, as he despises tyrannical regimes first and foremost and it just so happens to be Korra wants to end that regime too.

    • @redwings0142
      @redwings0142 7 місяців тому +3

Yeah, he doesn’t really change at all, and if he had the chance he would go right back to enacting his plan, but he did seem to be more reflective during his time in prison and gained a newfound respect for Korra. He still only really helped her because Kuvira represents everything he stands against, and acknowledges that she’s a creation of his own doing, so he felt obligated to help. On a related note: It actually speaks to just how threatening Kuvira was that several former villains like Zaheer, Varrick, and Hiroshi ended up siding with the protagonists to stop her.

When I first time watched Korra I really didn't care about character growth and something like this stuff. Of cource I said "Korra's garbage" and didn't even pay attention to this show while watching. But then after years, when I wasn't obsessed with ATLA I rewatched Korra and... man, I love this... the whole things that Korra goes throw really touches me. Her growth is just wow. Her PTSD, just the way she says "I'm tired Katara, I'm so tired" is sooo relatable. This is freakin great show to me. And now I love this more than Aang...

About the whole Raava and Vaatu = God and Satan thing.
Not only is this NOT how God and Satan works, as they're NOT portrayed as equal forces, (I'm pretty sure the story is that god would TOTALLY WOOP SATAN'S ass when the time came.) but I'm also pretty sure that beings representing objective good and evil are also present in some eastern philosophies/religions as well.
And like Matt said... RAAVA AND VAATU DOESN'T EVEN REPRESENT GOOD AND EVIL NECESSARELY, THEY'RE MORE LIKE ORDER AND CHAOS STUFF!
