I visited Morro rock when I visited Socal to tour California Polytechnic in SLO. It was a short drive away and totally worth it, even Morro Bay was impressive!

0:56 That line of volcanic plugs are all part of the same volcanic system that created Moro Rock. They run in pretty much a straight line and developed over a magma chamber that stayed relatively stationary while the Coast Range accreted over the top of it. Moro Rock is the last volcanic plug in the sequence.

Grew up going to Morro Bay. Sometimes an overnight stay at the old Keystone Motel on our way down to Disneyland, other times we camped at the State Park and played golf at the course you flew over. My buddy and I would ride our bikes from the campground out Morro Rock and fish off the jetty at the mouth of the harbor too. Ate at Dorn’s and The Hungry Tiger. Hadn’t really changed much until the last 10 years or so. Love PCH, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Brach area.

Morro rock is the last in a chain of old volcanic 'sisters' that form a line down through San Luis Obispo. At 5:00 you can see the next in the chain right to the left of the rock. Love that entire area - beautiful land and always makes for a great stop

Was born and raised in SLO & have been to Morro Rock more times than I can count. We now live in Colorado but will usually visit Morro Bay when we are in town. The kids love to go down the embarcadero. Thanks for the video.

Love it. We used to hop in the outlet stream coming out of the power station to push out passes the break when we surfed the rock. Eerily warm water but it was the easiest paddle out.

The plan to tear those stacks down soon, I live in Santa Barbara and go to Morro Bay to relax, its a very slow pace not counting the tourists on the Eembarcadero sometimes. Great Jerky shop too.

Very nice, Micah. I lived in SLO for three years, in the 1970s, while attending Cal Poly. Drove to Morro Rock a number of times, sometimes trying to do homework there, which didn’t usually work out well. The scenery and surf were to distracting.

I lived in Morro Bay for a few years. The round trip from my apartment to the rock was almost exactly five miles so I made the walk a couple times a week, all the way around as far as I could go to the ocean side. I loved living there except that in the summer it tended to be foggy for months (Not that I should complain about that given where I live now).
I wanted to buy a house and had to go inland to afford it, up over the hills near Paso Robles. One of these days I’ll be rich…
I moved up here from San Diego for work. When I first moved up here my boss had a vacant house in Los Osos he let me stay in for a month while I found an apartment, so I was commuting on that road you followed daily. Being a city dweller all my life I was amazed as you seeing open fields, ranches and pastures this close to both the city proper and tourist destinations such as the beach. All part of the reason I fell in love with this area and settled down. I’m glad you guys had a wonderful trip, thank you for taking us along and I’m looking forward to seeing much more of it.

We travel from San Diego to Morro Bay every year and stay in a condo right on the bay. Your video is a great view of the rock and fantastic history lesson on the area. I've been trying to find the video of Huell Howser climbing to the top of the rock with a park ranger, but can't seem to locate it. I believe it was part of his California's Gold series.
The only change we've noticed over the years is that they no longer allow you to drive and park along the south end of the rock.

Morro Bay was the first place I went in the US. Year 2000 I was working as a newly qualified engineer on a submarine cable ship. We were tasked to run shore ends of the main Pacific communications cables into a place called Grover Beach but we flew out to join the ship in Morro Bay and we spent a couple if weeks offshore Morro (Ship too big to enter harbour) waiting to start the job. We flew from UK to LAX then a little propeller plane up to SLO. There was a guy called Frank Love (if I remember correctly) who ran a kayak hire place and a small tug boat which he would run us in and out to the the ship to the harbour and back like a taxi so we could enjoy the sites and sounds of Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo.
I always wanted to return but haven’t made it yet. I must try harder in the next couple of years.
If I remember correctly regarding the power station. At that time (August/September 2000) there was rolling blackouts across California. When they shut down power our ship was like a beacon of light illuminating the seafront.
Another great helicopter video Micah! 👍
