I had a fender tele, strat and a les paul to setup over the last couple days.. couldnt sleep thursday night, got all my stuff together, and sat down to start....tuned in too dave tv, and listened and watched while im doing my thing... the night went by pretty quick, got all three of them done that night.... im sure dave knows more than me, but it was just like having company... very informative, but not in your face kinda approach...
This guy's my favourite grouch on UA-cam. It's good to know I'm not alone in regaling all and sundry with with wit and charm and undiluted vitriol. He uses a lot of my pet phrases - he may even use my best expletive one day... but I doubt it. I don't think they have them in the US, Canada... wherever.
Hey Dave I was watching the video on the thinline telle and you said the guy was complaining about low volume on certain strings.i was checking out the pick ups and on those split pole piece fender logo humbuckers,it looked to me like the pole screws was set lower on the high string's witch can make it have lower output volume on those string's.and I'm sure you already know that I just want to feel like I know a fraction and I'm talking a very small fraction of what you know or what you have taught me.ive learned so much from your videos and I'm forever grateful brother.my mother passed away recently and I don't think I would have made it through without watching you everyday.thank you so much for what you do.it means more than you know.all the way from Kingsport Tennessee.cheers
I lost your youtube adventures when my old PC died it's ugly death. Missed your videos and then just found you again...I'm so happy and glad now. Anyway I have a Tele to build and I'm watching and trying top pay attention...
If you wan't heavier strings, Ernie Ball has a few sets that may suit your needs. EB 2626 - Not Even Slinky (12-56) is the next step up from the Beefy. EB 2839 - Baritone Slinky (13-72) is what I use for my B tuned V. Very nice guitar by the way. I am thinking about getting one of these and throwing a baritone neck on it.
I have the Mexican one of those! Bought it because Roine Stolt of the Flower Kings praised them so highly. Good enough for a Prog-Rock legend, good enough for me!
Hello from Sweden. Thanks for all the educational videos. I am trying to learn the art of repairing guitars, and your videos really helps! So thank you and keep up the good work!!!
If your flat, move the saddles forward. The action is pretty much your preference, Dave can maybe give you a number to start with, but not without a make and model.
I have a thinline kit from Big Cat guitars. It's a Thinline model and the wiring has be thrown for a loop. Do you have any experience with this? I've looked for schematics (and tried contacting them) and can't find to help...everything is different. It's a 2 humbucker, 1 vol/1 tone, 3 way blade switch and it's just sorta insane. Any advice is appreciated.
love the Tele! I have 3 Tele's and a Mustang. I wish I lived closer to you so I could get a good setup.I put graftech saddles on 2 of my Tele's so far.no I don't have a radis gauge.Do you have any recomdations for a bridge pickup on a 96 custom ? It has lower out put then the midle and neck or do you just plug it in to a clean boost?Have a great day Dave !
Hey Dave I was thinking about building my own telecaster from Warmoth. I have a ****load of tools (I'm a carpenter) and was wondering whats your opinion on them, Their guitar finishes, Service, selection. Thanks Cheers
Hi Dave - bit of a long shot but I tried to clean my guitar and took all the screws off the pick plate not knowing the pickups had tiny springs underneath and now I cant get them back in and the wiring to sit right, any tips? Thanks
Yes, in the US lighter fluid is naphtha. That is why the container of lighter fluid I have says Petroleum distillate/Naphtha. 1. Coleman fuel is a petroleum naphtha product marketed by The Coleman Company. Historically called white gas (not white spirit 2. It is the purity of the naphtha that is in question regarding products in the US. news.ihsmarkit.com/press-release/chemicals/2020-us-emerge-largest-exporter-light-naphtha-essential-production-gasoline-
I watched your video. Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it. I JUST bought a mexican thinline and I've read that they're not always setup properly out of the box. So, I bought the necessary tools for setting up my new guitar in anticipation of any problems I need to fix. However... I'm not finding a lot of specific specs. I watched you check the radius, but what size radius tool did you use? what's the recommended action? Is there anything else I need to be aware of? also, I'll be using super slinky strings .11 gauge.
Trying to find a video that addresses those 3 Phillips screws under the 6 intonation screws and springs. Took it all apart to clean out a pound of garbage...big mistake. Like, how tight or how adjusted?
which pickup height would you suggest for those wide range humbuckers? if i set them to 3mm under the pushed down e strings at the last fret the neck pu is much louder than the neck one =(...now i got 3mm für bridge and 4mm für neck pu...in the manual fender suggest 1,6mm, which i guess is a too small distance...greets
I saw your "72 thinline telecaster set-up video and I own the same axe. I was wondering if there is a cover I can install over the bridge because I rest my palm ther when I'm playing and it's rough on my skin.
just wondering to how much doyou charge for a setup like that? i have an stratocaster that needs some tweaking but have no idea how much should be ok to pay.
These types of tele guitars are mostly made in Mexico. Unless it's one of the American Elite ones. It goes for $899 brand new, but as for the American ones, I don't think there are American '72 thinlines, but I could be wrong...
Hey davey4557 I have the exact same guitar, when i bend my high E and B strings the vibration stops do to tuching the fretboard. Is it the action that might be to low. Thanks
it's interesting how people say that the neck fit is so important but fender puts a screw in that basically makes that side of the neck stand away from the body.
Good to see it's not just my thinline that has ZERO shielding inside it, thanks Fender. Also, why do they insist on installing those lame jack sockets on all their Teles that you can only tighten from the inside once the pick guard is off? Question: is it a good idea to raise the saddle height and compensate with the micro tilt/neck angle? I'm thinking more sustain and less shredded palm on the darn saddle screws might be the way to go. Cheers.
Lupocide Interesting the higher priced '72 thin lines don't have shielding, yet the new Squier Vintage Modified '72 thinlines are lined with black shielding paint and grounded to the body. I am amazed at the level of quality coming out of Squier/Indonesia. www.tdpri.com/forum/attachments/squier-tele-forum/253778d1411864424-squier-72-thinline-pickups-image-2242970524-jpg
I had a similar experience, I bought a Deluxe Hot Rails Indonesian Strat ($299.00) and mine was completely shielded exactly like your Tele. I fixed it up and it plays like a dream. The previous year I bought A new Fender Dave Murray Strat ($1000.00) and it had no shielding what so ever and it played horribly. I tried shielding the control cavity with copper tape and the routing was so poor (not deep enough) that the middle position lug on the 5 way switch shorted out against the copper tape, disabling the middle pick up when I screwed the pick guard back on. What is wrong with Fender? Their American/Mexican guitars have no consistency at all; what a shame. I bought an American Deluxe last year and sent it back the same day.
hey davey, I love watching your videos, and this one reminds me of a problem ive been having with my Epiphone Les Paul. When I switch to the bridge pickup, it would sound like the pickups volume was very low, and had a very ugly tone, but if I strum with a lot of velocity right over the pickup it would sometimes switch itself back to its regular volume. I didn't mind that much at first because I mostly use the neck pickup, but recently it happened to that pickup too! help would be appreciated.
don't know why people thinks 11's aren't heavy enough for c i use 11-56 i think, and they're perfect, even lower but i went to 12's for lower cuz the 11's felt very loose
That's a nice guitar, I couldn't afford that but a Squier thinline same pup's and wood not as nice neck/tuners but just goes to show you a good set-up is like a... condom it may look really good and not needed but necessary.
Nice tele, the drop c tuning I don't get. Once set up to accommodate a slack tuning that drastic you're pretty much fucked to do anything else with it. Thanks Dave, good video as per usual.
Dave, I need your help mate. Like, really. Basically, here's the problem. My friend asked if she could put a Yamaha Pacifica neck on a pick body Strat. Man, my frets on my #1 strat are getting bad. Since they gotta be dressed soon anyways, anyone know if it would be worth the extra money to have the neck plek'd?
Hi, Dave. Are you getting more sensitive or what, you were much more rude and pissed on older vids... Maybe it's because of getting older? How ever I have a question about the strings for you. When I bought my strat copy I got it with some crappy strings, the nickel peeled off after few days and it was impossible to set the intonation. So I bought Dunlop 10's for 10$ and restringed my guitar. It sounded good until few heavier bends on G and B strings, and after that they've become metalic and buzzing in high pitch. Other strings are ok, but these two sound like a banjo... Is it possible that strings can be stretched or something?
metallic n buzzy seems just like the Long n McQuade house brand strings I tried last month. the only strings I've hated so far. Just irritates me when strings sound better after they're dead. Not worth the $1.50 in savings over what else I've played.
The Thinline Fender is nice. But all those screws in the pickguard make it look like something from a Frankenstein movie. I bet it would look better without the pickguard.
Brian steff magnussen I agree. Usually I love pickguards - especially the pearloid ones - but when a guitar has such a beautiful woodgrain on it, I can't stand to see a pickguard covering it up.
So, what's the function of the Thinline hollow body? Make the body lighter, than no need for F hole or it can resonate like an acoustic guitar? Every one playing it with an amp!
szaki The initial attempt was to make it lighter since the first time they were introduced, Fender's supplies of light ash were running low, so the goal was to make a chambered, light weight Telecaster. They ended up refining it a bit more and included the F hole for looks and function by adding some acoustic properties to the sound. Later on, they included the wide range humbuckers designed by Seth Lover and a hard tail strat bridge.

I learn something Every time I watch this guy,a fountain of free knowledge. Some post from the U.K on it's way to you Davey.Cheers man.
I have the Mexican one of those! Bought it because Roine Stolt of the Flower Kings praised them so highly. Good enough for a Prog-Rock legend, good enough for me!
I love these Thinine guitars... I have the Cresline copy from the early 70's from Japan... quality guitar! But I still dream of a FENDER!!!!
Hello from Sweden.
Thanks for all the educational videos.
I am trying to learn the art of repairing guitars, and your videos really helps!
So thank you and keep up the good work!!!
What are you using to clean the frets? And what's the point of that vs. a rag and some oil?
That's a damn fine looking instrument.
Looks like you saved its tele (CASS) ter. As always, great job David.
Just got here and looking forward to this.
Yes I would use 12s for drop c tuning. Its much better and the strings are less loose
If your flat, move the saddles forward. The action is pretty much your preference, Dave can maybe give you a number to start with, but not without a make and model.
For me clock set to 5:39 is where is summary start. Really great info. Thanks Dave!
Apparently they use drop C with 12 gauge strings for a lot of modern rock/metal songs.
Nice vid, thanks Dave.
beautifull guitar body! seems a bit like the one you coated on your own...but with only the clear coat...niiice!
Love your show! I have learned alot from you about setting up my axe's . thanks!

Did you use your Toronto Maple Leafs T-Shirt to clean that neck ?
Thanks for all your videos Dave, they actually really help with my music A-level =)
Ever have a neck that couldn't get enough relief by loosening the truss rod? Would the neck need to be shimmed in that scenario?
I have more probs with my pedalboard than guitar. How about a general pedal care/ maintenance vid? Cheers
Friggin hilarious... you need a reality tv show
Just be ready when the CBC comes calling
Hey Dave
I was thinking about building my own telecaster from Warmoth. I have a ****load of tools (I'm a carpenter) and was wondering whats your opinion on them, Their guitar finishes, Service, selection. Thanks

Beefy Slinky are great for D tuning, but for drop C you really need to replace the 54 by a heavier like a 58.
Yes, in the US lighter fluid is naphtha. That is why the container of lighter fluid I have says Petroleum distillate/Naphtha.

THAT THING'S BEAUTIFUL
drop c can be used for djent
or put capo on fret 1 and can play most black veil brides stuff
SuomiPerkele okay i suppose so but i use my strat for this type of music but you can really play any genre on any guitar
SuomiPerkele yes depending on your amp
It was definitely Gouched!!!
I ONLY had tighten and loosen. No power tools?
Dropsy Tuning??? Is that the sound the guitar makes when you drop it in a Dumpster???
Cheers!
How do you align the pickup screws with the springs when putting the pick guard back on (my springs don't stay upright)...?
What is the CE and recycle stickers on the back plate? My Jazz bass had them as well
I watched your video. Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it. I JUST bought a mexican thinline and I've read that they're not always setup properly out of the box. Fender does make a " ashtray" cover for their stop tails. This type is the same as used on a stratocaster stop tail.
just wondering to how much doyou charge for a setup like that? i have an stratocaster that needs some tweaking but have no idea how much should be ok to pay.
Dave
As always, thanks!
@davey4557 Are you a Guitar or bass man?
nice guitar
i am good bro . i love your Shepherds Pie and your 500th Video Special
both excellent and use video for anyone with a fender/Squier Tele. thank you PAPA KIRANA
Beautiful guitar! reminds me the early Steve Morse's Telecaster!! Nice!!
It's disappointing to see a top of the line telecaster with these sorts of problems like screws stripping out and a faulty jack.
Not Made in the US seemingly.
These types of tele guitars are mostly made in Mexico. Unless it's one of the American Elite ones. It goes for $899 brand new, but as for the American ones, I don't think there are American '72 thinlines, but I could be wrong...
Yeah I have this telecaster its made in Japan
gotcha. Thanks
Hi Dave. Have you tried ooo gauge steel wool for final fret polishing?
I find that it gives a real fine shine !
Keep yourself nice !
Hey davey4557

How do the Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified Squire thin lines compare with this guitar?
is that a bad religion t shirt davey?
So lighter fluid is good for the fret board and the finish?
Also, they are stock pickups and I took off the cover plates and never had the problem before that, so maybe I messed up while doing that?
Dave you should have tuned it to open C# and threw a Molson beer bottle in as a free slide...
hey davey,
I love watching your videos, and this one reminds me of a problem ive been having with my Epiphone Les Paul. Dave, are these MIM?
Damn, that's a pretty sweet looking guitar, yeah, pressure the owner to do a demo, I want to hear that thing .....especially with the unusual tuning.
That is a nice guitar.
What's wrong with drop C tuning? I rather fancy it...
Cheers!
don't know why people thinks 11's aren't heavy enough for c i use 11-56 i think, and they're perfect, even lower but i went to 12's for lower cuz the 11's felt very loose

Ace vids Dave
D'Addario makes a baritone set that's 14/18/26/44/56/68, but they recommend it for a 29 3/4" scale. Product# XL157
Dave, I need your help mate. Like, really.
Basically, here's the problem. My friend asked if she could put a Yamaha Pacifica neck on a pick body Strat.
So I done that, and I have really bad intonation, the guitar is so flat. The action is reasonably decent (I don't know how to set up action) but I just don't know what to do.
How do I measure action using a measuring tape, and how do I solve the intonation problem?
Much help would be appreciated! :D
1. You should have said "sure go ahead".
2. Scale length: the average of the vibrating length of the string.
You need to add shims or remove material where the neck joins the body to arrive at 25 1/2" scale length. Center the saddles so you end with room for intonation.
this guitar is beautiful I want one
This helped a bunch thanks so much!!
I'm in here.
Thanks for the tip!
Would say 13 or 14 gauge strings for drop c? I can get down to Eb drop Db on 11 gauge. But why such a low tuning on a guitar that's clearly not very metal? :P
+carl peckett They made barritones before metal was even a thing. You can use lower sounds in other genres too.
Is that a USA or Mexican made?
nice one bro...

Love your videos man. I wish I could send you my 72 Tele Deluxe reissue. I'm too afraid to mess with it man. :(
my recommendation would be check out the Gibson LP Junior......fantastic guitar for the price.....right now as I speak you can find them for 499 US Dollars......but do a search for them....cause they are selling like hotcakes.....
The old strats didn't have 2 string trees either I think. Atleast my AVRI 57 strat doesnt have one
That's too funny I have there are seymour duncan P 90 on my squire Tele which are great,Why didn't I think of that? I will be reunited with my Tele's when I go home for Christmass!( I work in Ft.Mac and try to live in Nova Scotia)
Sometimes I wonder if we'd all be better off to yank the pickups out of all our guitars and put in EMG's in stead. Not exactly vintage but more consistent. You can always save the original parts.
Nice..
Man, my frets on my #1 strat are getting bad. Since they gotta be dressed soon anyways, anyone know if it would be worth the extra money to have the neck plek'd?
Correction ....it is the LP Junior Special.........
hey Dave what you up to bro ?
yeah, mine is in the mail!! I suppose I will put regular slinks on her!
why would you used drop c on a guitar that its drop metal country?
Hi, Dave. Are you getting more sensitive or what, you were much more rude and pissed on older vids... Maybe it's because of getting older? How ever I have a question about the strings for you. When I bought my strat copy I got it with some crappy strings, the nickel peeled off after few days and it was impossible to set the intonation. unless that's actually the tuning you only ever play/write/perform in if all your songs are played in either Drop C or D Standard.
So, what's the function of the Thinline hollow body? Make the body lighter, than no need for F hole or it can resonate like an acoustic guitar?
Every one playing it with an amp!

cool
8 beers later and everything is a shakey cam
Hmm... ever notice, Davey's all happy when he's working on a Fender. Even if it is a Thinline-burrito.
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
What no swearing!. . . . . . . Working on your own stuff is enough to make you.
