- This is Part 2 of 2 of the biggest prized bullet chess tournament in history. It's the "Agadmator CakeDeFi Christmas Arena". Play resumed without issue on January 11th at 2:00 PM EST. I followed/livestreamed the games of 5-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen as he plays the remaining 1 hour and 20 minutes of the event for the incredible top prize of 1 Bitcoin. This event of 2-minute bullet chess includes the very best bullet players in the world, namely Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Andrew Tang, Daniel Naroditsky, and many more.

I love how you can see Carlsen develop f3+Kf2 theory as the tournament progresses. What a boss.
I call it the accelerated bongcloud.
At 11:40, Ali Reza, Magnus, AND Chessnetwork miss that Qg8 is mate.
what did I miss here? :)
Damn
nice find. It's so fast I'm not surprised they all missed it
I read some comments and really think people should change their mind about Magnus Play .. During the stream, I was slightly disappointed too, but afterward I thought :
He just does whatever he wants, he plays for himself and not according to the audience.
If any other random IM or GM would have proceded the same way for fun nobody would even care! Why should it be different for Magnus ?. Does he has to take chess seriously the all time and be at 100% to satisfy people watching him ?
You guys just want to see him destroying everyone literaly like a circus freak, I believe it's not fair. He even often finished in the top while using those crazy openings. But since he is not in the top page now, some starts to disclaiming him and tell him how to play.
It just an irrelevant online bullet tournement, nobody should even care !
This guy most likely already played hundred of thousand games and takes chess more seriously than probably anyone here. If he wants to test himself with crazy opening and have some fun, then I find it quite nice
I also want to add that it's still an amazing performance, and not a lot of people seem to realise that. Finishing 14 with such a field while using garbage opening, just show how strong and resistant he is.
I saw people telling he is playing like this to somehow "cover himself" ,because he is becoming " weaker" . To me, this is non-sense . Those same people are just made because he didn't play like they want and now they just denigrate him, what a pity. He even finished ahead Alireza, who was 23th. Are you guys now gonna say that Already became weaker and should stop chess ? No !
It's just like this, anyone is extremly strong at this level and opponent's are really close to each other, every games are a fight. For this matter, Hikaru did really well
@@mwheezee dont be an ass. he is a fucking human being and can play how he wants. like this guy said, he's not a circus freak doensn't have to perform any way for anyone. Go watch the other thousands of videos on youtube that are instructional if you're trying to improve. Like you're watching this bullet tournament to improve. get off the guy's ass and get a life dude.
@@RobbiePfunder Dude, calm down, he's just expressing an opinion.
@@mwheezee to learn?? You think those ppl don’t have access to like thousands of Magnus games online?
@@riviereetienne9803 well the good thing is that our opinions count for shit and has no influence on him whatsoever. Magnus doesn’t give a damn about what people say. Whether people hate him or love him, he’s gonna keep playing however he wants. Some people whine and hate on Magnus for their own satisfaction and a few likes lol. Like you said, he can do whatever he wants. He’s not playing for the fans. He’s playing for himself and for his pleasure.
Got to be honest, I would have much preferred if carlsen played serious openings and actually tried for the first place. He could have donated the money as usual, and made a good statement as well as helped a good cause.
yeah, me too. I got bored really quick and started watching HIkaru's stream instead.
@@vivekt9445 I still love J-man's commentary, though. No matter who he's watching, but not as interesting as regular carlsen.
Carslen couldn't hack trying and losing vs Naka so he decided to pretend it was all a big joke.
Disappointing to see Carlsen play with a joke opening, but still fun. Thanks Jerry!
Been waiting for this! Thanks for the video, Jerry. Excellent commentary as always.
I don't care what anyone says, watching Magnus screwing around is still watching a master at work. It's like knowing that Renoir could paint photorealistically, and complaining about his being an Impressionist. That's art; it was beautiful from start to finish.
Even 1 bitcoin bores the doctor, that’s a whole new level
When you're world champ you're allowed to play f3 Kf2
It's in the chess manual
well, anyone's allowed to play it, and lose, just like Magnus lost
@Sloth Bear Anonymous 4 months late but what's your obsession with Carlsen? He's the 5 time defending WC. Your love for Naka is very strange..
Such a shame that Magnus isn't giving this tournament his best effort. Jerry, next time Magnus is playing like this just ditch his stream and watch the #1 player that's actually trying to win.
I totally agree with this statement.
would have liked if we switched to nakamura commentary instead of magnus for this one
@@jawadsaleh9971 my thoughts as well
In my opinion he was playing real chess. He was taking them out of prep. So they were playing more pure chess.
Jerry, please do an analysis on the BONGCLOUD opening.
Ben Finegold: "Never play f3"
Magnus Carlsen: "Hold my world championship"
*Carlsen plays wonky opening* Jerry: "My disappointment is... immeasurable. And my day is ruined. "
With that opening, I'm shocked he won as much as he did. lmao
We need a JerryGems dictionnary, ranging from goose egg to snug bug ( a new one for me )
Jerry by far the best chess commentator out there, especially in live events (his own and others)! Thanks!
As dissapointing as this may be, at least it's instructive on how to defend given a losing position.
"Fried Fox Attack" that f3, Kf2 thing. So I'd call it Magnus' "Fried Road Kill" or "Opossum Defense" w/ f6, Kf7.
Best opponent's winning variation gets "Vulture's Attack"?
Does it actually hold up in any theory? I'd love to see Jerry do a video on it if he hasn't already.
Magnus vs. Hikaru at 32:05 (Not an exciting game)
it was the best match of all time you drunk 🥴🍺
11:38 What did you miss there? A mate in one, but so did DrChampionstein ;)
Carlsen is so bad at spoting quick winning tactics to be honest, reason he's so good at bullet is because his endgames strategy is so good even in short time controls. I wonder how badly he would do at the chesscom's Puzzle Battle World Championship
One psychological hypothesis on why the BS openings:
By playing BS openings, you - basically - can't lose, psychologically. Firstly, if you lose the match, you did so because you played a BS opening, not because you didn't play well. Second, if you manage to win, the win is a true power-move, demonstrating to yourself and the opponent that you are the superior player.
Essentially, hindering your performance in this manner (the same can be said for berserking against strong opponents) is a way of protecting yourself, not exposing yourself to the negative effects of losing properly.
Many of you have probably done the same thing in multiplayer FPS: Choosing a bad weapon or strategy on purpose to see if you can perform well against all odds. Generally, the game gets more fun, because you - essentislly - have nothing to lose.
As for the prize money: Weber-Fechner law: One Bitcoin isn't that much of a prize in comparison to Carlsen's wealth, and his newly achieved prize from becoming world champion.
As a 2300 mainly 1. f3 2. Kf2 player, I agree. Great explanation and post.
I googled Weber-Fechner. I can't believe there's a law for something this obvious.
Here's one guy who knows wtf he's talking about
Your analysis is quite interesting however it fails imo as I don't think Magnus ever thought he had a chance of winning with this opening. Even if he manages to win a lot of games , most games would be longer with him having to defend mostly. That would waste a lot of time as well. I think he just didn't feel like playing and played it anyway.
@@messiakash Good point! I suspect, though, that the intention of the player is somewhat besides the point. For example, if you play FPS shooters with the same tactic (as I used as an example in the original post), you don't necessarily do it while aiming for a win (pun intended). - You do it in order to enjoy the game without the risk of losing properly. Any loss does not reflect your inability to win, but rather the weaknesses of your opening
This turned my bad day into a good day. Thanks Jerry!
I can't believe Carlsen Rock Lee'd himself this hard.
11:39 it was not only rook on b8 it was a checkmate had he played Qg8# because bishop on h4 cut the diagonal for the only black king square to run. I don't know maybe for some reason, he decided that he is going to win this game anyway?
He must have missed it.
Never move f pawn ?.. Ben finegold will be kicking his tables watching this..
My guess is Carlsen was annoyed that he was so far behind after part 1, so he stopped caring and played this joke opening just to troll around.
ONE WHOLE BITCOIN
At the restart of this tournament Magnus was down 16 points to Hikaru. It's a big difference and with so many top level players at the top 10 it wouldn't be realistic to turn it around. I think he just decided to have some fun with an impossible to win position. I don't think MC is into playing for 2nd or 3rd.
He wasn't playing for 1st from the start even before. If he wanted he would win it all. Bongcloud was the best way to have fun, not lose on purpose and let others get that money he doesn't need.
Disagree - he’s pulled back greater deficits with some amazing streaking. Very disappointing that he chickened out here
People will say he only lost because of the opening but it just goes to show you Magnus knew he had no chance to begin with after the first day
exactly
Still better than all of them

Very disappointing. People have been waiting for years to see Magnus vs Naka in bullet and this was a great opportunity. Feels like a cop out by Magnus so if he loses he can just say “well I wasn’t really trying”
Yeah Magnus, Hikaru, and Alireza all together (not to mention Naroditsky and others), it was sad to see Carlsen flunk out like that. Hopefully this won't be a one-off for Hikaru competing in the Lichess bullet tourneys
I really don’t think Magnus Carlsen has anything to prove to anyone…
Magnus and Hikaru have played thousands blitz and bullet games with different nicknames, back to the ICC time. Magnus often crushed Naka. After crushing Nepo Magnus has.not been serious. Playing drunk, Bongcloud etc. A Bitcoin is nothing for Carlsen, he earns more than that weekly. Average. Tata will show if Magnus is back to normal.
@@osgubben Carlsen doesn't earn $40K. a week. I think Hikaru on twitch and 1+ million on youtibe does make more than Magnus right now. Despite that Hikaru still played to win. He didn't use "I make a lot of money" as an excuse to lose the tournament.
@@lazycalc2533 I don't thing Magnus has anything to prove either, I think he's the best player of all time. It's not about proving anything, it's about giving the fans what they want. This was just silly
feels like he didn't want to play but was obligated due to some contract he signed, he was pissed off in Part 1 of the tournament because of the technical issues

Has Jerry really never seen Carlsen's improved bongcloud before? I figured a Carlsen fan such as himself would know the pioneering contributions that he made to chess openings.
It is not????
Im curious how sound that opening magnus uses is. Can you share the evaluation after that early king move Jerry? Or someone in chat. 😂
or you look it up and share it, be the person you want to see in the world
@@KriszzzfulOr, i could ask it to jerry, or someone in the chat if they already knew the answer. Which is what i did :)

I admire Magnus for this opening! It makes the viewing fun while he does not give away his repertoire. This was so much fun to watch!!!
he played this to have an excuse that he lost. didn't want to lose straight up.

@@dustinirwin1 i don't think so. He could've won if he had tried, I mean on previous tournament also he's known to crush Nakamura on bullet and blitz. I don't think he played that opening to just cover up his loses, He does these kind of opening all the time on titled arena also
@@rohitnegi4651 Part 1 Carlsen was playing real opening and trying but naka was still winning the tournament. Part 2 he comes back knows he has no chance of winning as he is behind too and plays dumb sht. Thats what happened here.

The B in Bitcoin does stand for Bongcloud after all
Good one! In this event Carlsen doesn't play the Bongcloud, but he does play dubious openings like Gedult's, the Barnes Defense, and the Fried Fox.
A serious comment is Carlsen doesn't really need money.
Magnus playing bongcloud in the 2nd half had big, when someone is losing 3-0 on Fifa and starts getting red cards on purpose, energy.
Yes, he didn’t take the 2nd half “seriously”, but even when he did in the first half, he was so far behind and Hikaru pretty much had an insurmountable lead by the end of the first hour.
Your analogy makes no sense . He was just playing for fun which disappointed me and I'm sure a lot of other people. But he's the champ and he is entitled to his way of playing . As for the lead, nakamura didn't even have an insurmountable lead. You have probably not watched a titled arena ever on lichess. Magnus has overcome bigger margins in lesser time. And it's not like Nakamura was in vintage form when he faced much stronger opponents in the second half. Also, btw you've probably not played fifa in a while too, nobody does that anymore
yeah, I was just pretending to be stupid kind of energy
he knew he had no chance against naka so he had to get an excuse
@@pepega3344 it’s not an excuse at all. It’s only an excuse if people say that he didn’t win cuz he played stupid openings which I’m sure only impractical people would say. It’s clear that Hikaru had a huge lead already and that there was a very minute chance of Magnus coming back.
@@pepega3344 No chance in which way? Catching up? He did that in the past, it could've been possible. Do I say it would have happened? No. I am only saying it did happen and therefore can happen. Do you mean winning against him as in them facing off? Unless I remember it wrong, he has won every single tournament against Nakamura, even when Magnus was untilted and Nakamura reigning what was it, Speed Chess? Blitz? Bullet? I don't remember. But at a time he was holding all titles at once.
He knew he could not get Nakamura, so he decided to creat a reason why he did not win it.
Did he? He destroyed him before in 1/1.
To be fair, if Carlsen won people like you would point out that 2/0 is no real bullet and therefore the result is irrelevant and Hikaru still the best bullet player.
Somebody needs to set up a 100 game 1/0 match between the two to settle this for good.
Magnus is stronger than Naka in online bullet. He's stronger than everyone else in the world (look at his score vs. Alireza). He's proven himself many times. In this case, he's drunk and playing crummy openings, so it's not really an accurate snapshot of his strength.
@@yorickstrangefield2976 Man, I don't deny that. But this was part 2 of the tournament and Nakamura was a lot of points in front. You are reacting as if this offends you somehow 😁

such a stacked event. I think carlsen calculated that the odds of winning were close to zero so he decided to just have fun
The best part is when they playing chess and one wins at the end
Ugh. I hate when magnus plays like this. It’s not really that interesting to watch. Maybe next time Jerry would be willing to watch the podium instead. Naka, Andrew Tang, Ali Reza, drop stone… anybody taking it seriously and who is winning consistently.

Real og
Imagine Magnus reaction to some farseer in 2012 foreseeing Magnus' future playing for 1 bitcoin :D
Could it be Magnus doesn't want to give away any ideas or style of play? All his games will be examined by computers and humans before real championship games?
This is a silly argument. You can play thousands (millions in fact) of good openings but still keep your secrets. He was trying in part 1 with real openings but was left behind. So he comes back for part 2 and plays silly sht as he knows he won't be able to catch naka anyway.
Hvorfor gjør han det på denne måten ?

@@slothbearanonymous nobody can know that for sure without a time machine
To be honest, the World Rapid & Blitz kinda showed that Magnus is not exactly at that point of "winning without even trying", at least for the moment. Although playing this silly opening sorta matches his online (frequently drunk) persona and his peculiar ways of "having fun", it surely could come out as a ready-made excuse to cover up some kind of insecurity. All I know is that I'm sad to see the Dr. wasting a Jerry video.
You summed it up perfectly.
Yeah I think Magnus is insecure about something, with these nonsense openings. It's like he's afraid to try his best because he knows he might fail even if he gives it 100%, which would make him inferior to "Best in the world"
First Jerry / Magnus video I've not finished
That's how it came off to me as well. He was losing after the first half when he was actually trying, but now he has an excuse.
@@neilh.4385 This is a psychological phenomena called self-handicapping. Basically people self-sabotage themselves so that if they fail, they have an excuse to protect their ego. Fischer did this in the world championship, losing the first two games on purpose seemingly. The thing is, when people self-handicap themselves and succeed, it proves it was due to their talent and skill. But if they fail, it was because the odds were stacked against them to begin with. Carlsen knows that winning this tournament is not guaranteed, given the huge amount of talent.

1…PKN4 indeed…. 😒
Yeah, this is disappointing. I agree if he starts to throw to switch to other players taking it seriously. At least in higher stakes tournaments like this one where there are a lot of high quality players taking it seriously.
Why should he take it seriously just because you want him to?
Yeah well he doesn’t play for his fans. He’ll play however he wants to.
How is this a higher stake tournament? He said he will likely not play the next World Chess Championship, unless Alireza is the challenger. Does this not give enough perspective as to how little the tournament can mean to him? Money is clearly not the motivator, but if even a chess champion title doesn't do the trick anymore, then what do you expect?
Fourth comment!
MAGNUS ONLY PLAYING LIKE THIS BECAUSE KNOWS NAKA IS BETTER AT NO INCREMENT BULLET, BUT THIS GIVES MAGNUS AN EXCUSE FOR NOT WINNING!!!!!!
Naka bullet on lichess is 3150, Magnus got to 3380. If he really wanted, he would win it all, he just doesn't need that money.
