This is an amazing idea.I got my pump cheap online & I have lots of jars I can now vacuum seal dry goods in for my new Pantry.I was despairing because the electric equipment is so very, very expensive I just couldn’t afford it.Plus this so environmentally friendly recycling jars!!I love how you demonstrated your technique so well, straightforward & easy to follow. Many thanks for putting this video on You Tube.Liz.
Heads up! In a few days, I'll put up a 7 year update on these sealed jars of rice. They have been sitting in boxes in outside storage until now. We'll see how they faired. Be looking for the update.
If you want an easier way to remove lingering smell from your jars, try putting the lids upside down and pouring some vegetable oil in them. Leave them soaking in the oil for a day or two, then pour the oil out (you can still use it for cooking). Wash the lids with soap and they should have zero smell. The reason this works is that many flavor compounds are fat soluble but not water soluble ( hence why it's so hard to wash the smell out with water).
When I have been preparing food that has an odor that sticks to my hands, I wash really well, then rub my hands with a bit of oil or butter, what is available and let it stay on my hands for a few minutes. Then I was really well, and the smell is gone. It works for onions and when you are preparing raw chicken or turkey, the smell of the raw fat that sticks to your hands will be gone too.
We can salmon and I hate having salmon taste in my jar pies that I make in those jars! We put a half tsp of oxyclean in each smelly jar, put them in the sink and fill with hot water. Throw the lids in too. Let them sit till the water is cool enough to stick your hands in to pull the plug, rinse well and no more smell. Will get any smell out.
Omg luv yous I'm from Scotland and I was wondering how the heck I'd be able to can things so thank you so much honestly here in scotland we don't have all the canning things yous have over there x
This is NOT canning Sharon. It's simply removing some of the air in the jar (FYI: use an electric vacuum sealer to remove a lot more air than this hand pump) in order to extend the freshness period. It does NOT replace canning methods for long-term safe and sterile storage.
How do you get the pickle smell out of the glass jar so it doesn't make your rice smell like pickles? I have used bleach solution and let sit for days and still has strong smell of pickles.
I would put some more tap over it... all plastics are permiable... soda bottle are less.Id even may make a deal wirh hot melt and use think aluminum as the TAPE
I use the black plastic tape but them put a large square of aluminum tape over the plastic tape for good measure. Have been doing that for the last 4 years and the flour is still good.

Patiently waiting :)

+Rogue Panda Designs Thank you so much!
That's what I was hoping to learn.
Thanks!
Thanks I'll try that.

my opinion would be that you might need to pump it a few more times, theres more air in the jar than you might think
I was looking for an idea like this. Very nice trick. In the end I went with o2 absorbers in the jar. It pulls a vacuum and holes to worry about.
Add O2 absorbers and you've got serious long term storage!
very cool, not sure I'd personally trust the seal to some electrical tape myself though.
Nice find on the free jars👍

Wow. Thanks alot. I have huge pickle jars. Wish me luck.

I used a shop vac using same method for mason jars and it works great
Great idea! Thanks for sharing this.

Neat! Do you know how long the vacuum will last?
I still have some of the jars in storage. I'll do a follow-up soon.
but the tape will dry out and come loose
Not electrical tape, its very sticky and soft

Would you recommend mashed potato storage in pickle jars?
Turn your volume up next time you do a video. Thanks.
How long will it hold it vaccum seal?
