  • Glass jars are the ultimate reusable food storage container! Dry goods stored in mason jars can last many years IF you remove the oxygen and protect them from light. Oxygen absorbers are a simple and effective way to remove oxygen from any jar with an airtight seal.

    I just use 400cc Oxygen Absorbers in Everything & be Done with it! I played the What Size Oxygen Absorber Game for a bit but now I no longer have to as my 400cc's take care of everything. Stop Guessing or trying to go by Charts just get the Larger CC ones & use them in Every Storage Container as they are not expensive! Stop with the Guessing Game!!! I use a Pint Jar/Mylar bag (400cc), I use a Quart Jar/Mylar Bag (400cc), I use a 1/2 Gal Jar/Mylar Bag or a Gallon Jar/Mylar Bag (400cc). Doesn't get any easier than that!!!

    Kylene, I would like to ask 2 questions...
    I have
    dried whole raspberries which have a date if 6/24. Can I can place these in a glass jar with an oxygen absorber to preserve long term?
    Also, I have dried butter powder (grass fed butter (pasteurized cream, milk solids). Can I also put this in glass jars for long-term storage, and if so, do I use an oxygen absorbers or do I need to vacuum seal the jars? (I would use half pint canning jars).

    Hey guys. Thanks for all the great info. But....I still have a problem. I recently ordered 02 absorbers from Amazon. I was supposed to get 2 packs. One of 100cc absorbers and 1 pack of 1000cc absorbers. I don't think that is what I got. The 100cc absorbers are TINY! They look like they should be AT MOST 50cc. ... absorbers that the company is claiming are 1000cc look just like the 100cc sized absorbers that I have watched dozens of preppers use as 100 or 200cc. Any chance you guys might consider a short tutorial on recognizing by shape & size?? I hate to be unsure....and at the same time I don't want to just throw my money away. Thanks!

However we store our unused absorbers in a quart jar and after sucking the air out using the vacuum pump feature on the same device you guys use, the little oxygen indicator goes from pink, blue when opened and then back to pink again after the storage bottle is resealed. On one of your posts you said a gallon Mylar bag only needed a 300-400cc oxygen absorber. So why is it different (800cc for gallon jar) for a jar than a bag? Is that because you can't push out the extra air? I am just super confused!

    • @TheProvidentPrepper
      @TheProvidentPrepper  11 місяців тому

      They are calculating for the empty capacity for the jar. The calculation for the Mylar bag is considering that the bag is full of dry goods.

    You are already oversizing based on those numbers -- that is about the O2 if the jar is empty.
    For me 300cc is the cheapest and I do vacuum seal. I have a Foodsaver, but there are inexpensive alternatives and for my limited counter space they can be a lot more convenient.
    Not that it matters but I tend to buy in 10s too. The little bags are generally mylar (not aluminized) so I just reseal those bags as I think I get less O2 exposure. I too have had leaky bottles.

      You do not have to use an oxygen absorber with dry goods like white rice, rolled oats, etc. I do use one with freeze dried foods because they are more sensitive and it is so frustrating to go back and find a jar that is ruined. It also depends on the quality of your vacuum sealer.
