Hi Ken! I just love to go through these old and new videos you´ve made and still are making. A lot of the jazz records i´ve bought the last few months is based on you talking about them in a very inspiring way. My favorite jazz cats at the moment is Miles, Mingus, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley. Pepper Adams and of course Trane, to name just a few. One fine day i think i need to get on a plane and head for the big apple, looking to find some vinyl gems...
Bought Stan Getz at Cafe au Go Go on verve when I was 14, so it is at least 52 yrs old. My Magnavox had a headphone jack in the back and I would listen to that record and imagine myself in the club drinking Stingers. Rudy captured the ambience! Went to an event at my HIFI dealers around the first of this year and REGA was using that record to demo turntables.
East Coasting is right there with Ah Um and Dynasty in my list of favorite Mingus LPs. Not as...chaotic as his later work, just extremely smooth and thoughtful. Easy place to start with CM, as it's more accessible and less angry than some of his later stuff. Enjoyed as always, KM. Loving your work in S'phile as well!
Great records ken. I missed alot of them and i've been collecting for years...and yes monk actually got up and danced around the piano when i saw him years ago at shellys manne hole in hollywood in the sixties...he was also an hour late so it was the charlie rouse trio for a while before his majesty arrived! Thanks again ken i always learn somthing new!.. Wow i have to pick up that flanagan album!
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Yeah!..Iam an old baby boomer (74 yrs.old) and lived in L.A.from 61' to 69'.I fell in love with jazz growing up in minneapolis. Was lucky enough to see some greats at that time in los angeles...Miles with herbie and wayne and tony, bill evans, ornette, etc. Monk was funny at that time and had a reputation for being late so it was no surprise..It was well worth the wait. Use to see shelly all the time (who i know you appreciate as a drummer) i think he is underated to this day. He still sounds fresh and contemporary to this day! He had his own sound.Even his cymbal work sometimes reminds me of tony williams. Love your videos ken!!..that mingus album is a classic!!!
Hey Sir Ken, I agree with you on The Three Sounds, they were absolutely fabulous, as are Mel Lewis Sextet, Tommy Flanagan, and East Coasting by Charles Mingus. I wrote a review on East Coasting, it's fantastic and always in rotation on the turntable. I'm also going to have to check out that Duck Baker LP as well. Thanks for a great video and Happy Listening, my friend!
As always, another great video Ken. I agree with you complete about the 3 sounds. Straight ahead Jazz that's really good. Nothing ground breaking but they put out some really solid albums. I also agree with you statement on Monk. I really liked his Prestige and Riverside albums the best.
Don't forget it's the content that's the important thing and that's what you have in spades. Special effects and editing are nice but if you don't have good content to work with then it's all a bunch of crap :) @@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455
Hey Buddy. Great Channel ! Remember i was in the JRC when you copped that Mel Lewis. I was getting the Sonny Vanguard Three Lp Japanese pressings. Prob 3 years ago. See you soon
Stellar video, as always. I've only heard Thelonius Monk's later work so I am now eager to hear earlier work. I first heard Offramp in the early 1990's and I could not believe what I was hearing. I've only been a visitor to New York City so I tend to completely over-romanticize it.
Recently picked up sealed Joe zawinul the rise and fall of the third stream lp...really love weather report so how could I resist this Dollar treasure..
About 6 months ago, I got that Three sounds record, It just got to be. I couldn't get into Monk or Herbie Nichols although I did see Herbie's Bluenote recordings at a discount.
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Yes, I love them. "Blue n Boogie" alone makes it worth the price of a Japanese pressing as the playing is really in the pocket like soul-jazz. Obvious favorite of the group is the Blues Hour deluxe edition with Stanley Turrentine. Later on when Gene Harris and Ray Brown teamed up at Concord, it really gave that often hornless chamber jazz much more credibility. I had to get most of the Three Sounds cds through Japan. Enlightenment has issued 8 albums on 4 discs with absolutely no information and variable sound with mixed results. I do like the Fresh sounds label but for quality on cd you have to rely on quality pressings like vinyl but with the focus on restoring and source. The Three Sounds really deserved a Mosaic box but never got one.
Thats my favorite getz album...with jimmy raney, duke jordan right?..stan getz plays with his young son ( i think ) on the cover and no typography..just the photo. Right?..I had a mint copy of that years ago which i had to sell regretfully but did find a nice analogue japanese reissue. The original had a much more present and immediate sound. Lucky you!!!...oh yeah you said no cover.
Another excellent video Ken. Really been enjoying the Facebook group as well. I have been trying to buy up as many 3 Sounds as I can before people catch on and the price goes up. I will have to check out that East Coasting album. Take care!
The nicole mitchell album made me think it would be cool if you did a video on best albums created in the past 5, 10, or so years. Sounds like you may have already gotten this request?
Bkay, the things is, many contemporary jazz artists haven't recorded to vinyl due to the cost of pressings. There are few which I will search out. Thanks!
Got a copy of "East Coasting" a couple weeks ago, but it's on one of those shitty European labels. The damn LP is brand new and sounds like I've been rubbing sandpaper on it all day. I wish I had paid closer attention to your video on crap European pressings. Cheers!

Thanks for showing these, under the radar, lps. Always like to explore the less popular ones.,
Learning getting reinstated with lots of the good stuff.

Hmm. Hope I'm not responsible for that.
Pat Metheny; excellent fusion. Have that recording, unfortunately on CD.
Ken, thanks to you I picked up that Metheny album. I also found a later Getz(1982) one as well. I'll post them over at the FB page.

Really dig Captain Marvel! I'm going to have check Sweet Rain out.
Great video ken as usual .ken what do you think of eric dolphy ?
