Hi. The epoxy resin I use is, as far as I can tell, food safe. Though it doesn't specifically have FDA approval - it is a German product. But the ingredients are non toxic, no bisphenols, VOCs, etc, so nothing nasty that would leach out. But even then, I don't think even "food safe" covers storage of food, only contact with food. Spelling mistakes are a bane. I remember having mis-spelt something in a video and only seeing it after publishing. No chance of changing it! Thanks so much for watching. Take care. Ray
Awesome video! I was thinking about making something like this for my teacher. One quick thing you shouldn’t drink anything hot (like coffee) out of that because of the resin and poly. It will release chemicals into your drink due to a high temperature. Other than that it was beautiful!
Hi. I would not advocate drinking from it either, even though this epoxy resin I used is non-toxic, no BPAs, etc. The other thing is that hot drinks might soften the cured resin, which would be more problematic if the walls were thinner. Definitely a show piece, or a sniffing piece! Thanks so much for the feedback! All the best. Ray
I was wondering if there is such a thing as a high temp epoxy that would be able to handle it better. Any thoughts? Great job! I love the contrast between the two browns!
@@kpotter78 Hey there! I have had this question for some time now also. Now I did a little bit of researching and didn’t find a whole lot. Some things such as tabletop epoxy brands said that they were high temp resistant, but not enough to hold coffee or tea and such. Even the high-end brand of resin (total boat if you have not heard about it) does not clearly specify whether it’s high heat or not. I did read into another brand called Art Resin a little bit though, claiming that they were high temp resistant. They do not have any harsh chemicals or anything harmful in their products, so it seems that you may want to choose them as they do not have any chemicals that can leech into your food or drink, but common sense still tells me you wouldn’t want to. Now if you were making tumblers, that’s a bit different as the resin is on the outside, coating the tumbler. The resin may get a little soft, but you can still use Art Resin, Total Boat, or any brands claiming they can take the heat and are going to hold up for the project you plan to make. My honest opinion, there’s gotta be something out there that is truly heat resistant. But with a mighty resin, there’s prone to be a mighty price. I’m sure if I looked hard enough, there is probably something. It would be nice if a company did make something truly heat resistant, because a lot of creators would love to make things like this to use on their day to day basis. I will definitely do more research into this and either comment on this again or make another separate. Anyway, thank you for the question and thinker for a minute! Ray, I'm wondering if You will pour a hot water only will You get a coffee? 😀 My fingers were crossed when You were cutting off the letters 🤞 I love coffee so with this size it is a cup, a mug should have 0,4L minimum 😎 Anyway You did great work 💪
Hi Rav. I did pour hot water and all is well on it's first (only?) use. The outside was sealed with lacquer and the inside with epoxy resin. I guess it's whether the walls are thick enough to withstand any Heat Distortion?!? I was happy to try turning coffee beans, even if the project is only a concept. It was a great smell! All the best. Ray
Hi Billy, sealed with a lacquer spray that as far as I could tell was food safe. I wouldn't store any liquids in and not sure whether hot liquids would have any effect on warping the container. Hope the project goes well and your wife likes it! All the best. Ray
......isn't the bottom inside of the mug still wood? also resin? great art piece but how is it a functional mug? what did you do to make it liquid and heat tolerable/resistant.... or do you just enjoy the flavor of resin and wood in your coffee?
Yes it's still wood. The epoxy resin I use is food and drink safe, but there's not much published by the manufacturing company for leaching at elevated temperatures. The whole thing was coated with a polyurethane spray. Both systems are left to fully cure. I've put boiling water in with no deformation of the cup. I do not know about the longevity of such a system. Woodturners have used melamine spray or beeswax to coat the inside of goblets.
Now I smiled when I saw this sandpaper, you have a sense of humor. But then it was not funny, it's when the coffee is in a cup of epoxy resin. As a piece of furniture, this cup certainly has the right to life, it may even be beautiful. But drinking from this cup of coffee ... I have not yet seen epoxy resin, on the packaging of which the manufacturer has not made an inscription - no contact with food is allowed.
Hi Valery. I understand your concern but not all epoxy resin is toxic and there are varieties which have been leach tested after curing and are considered food & beverage safe. In the US there are FDA approved epoxy resins. This article I found useful: www.artresin.com/blogs/artresin/artresin-passes-food-safety-tests. Though many still advocate never to store food or drink, they can be used in short term contact with food & drink. Though I totally understand anyone's reluctance to use an epoxy resin based tableware. Thanks for your thoughts! All the best. Ray
@@RayWhitbyCreations Let coffee and tea, from epoxy cups, be drunk by those who certified this epoxy, I do not mind. Personally, I can't even drink tea from a paper cup, I'm just disgusted. IMHO Val
@@clockmakerify I do agree with you when it comes to tea. I even imported Japanese ceramics for my green tea (お茶 ocha/зеленый чай) though I have been known to use British cups from time to time. For coffee, however, I am less fussy, but that's just me! Take care Valery. All the best. Ray
@@RayWhitbyCreations Oh - oh - oh ... This is where I fully understand and support you, although I have not advanced to buying ceramics in Japan. Good green tea to you Ray. Val
Agreed! The resin used is non toxic and safe for limited food & drink contact. Definitely not for storage. I tried putting hot drink in and the resin was pretty strong. But I would not ordinarily use it for drinking. All the best. Ray.
Great work Ray, Coffee mug I would say. Is the resin you use food safe or did you coat the interior with something else? The amount of coffee I go through I think I need a bigger mug same size as yours. Take care John P.S> my take on coffee cups is that they are demitasse. But that's just my take :-)
Hi John. I do use food safe resin and would coat the inside with it. I would probably then advocate standing it in water for a while to ensure no chemical leach, though probably superfluous if the resin is considered safe / non-toxic. As long as no beverage is stored in there, I'm happy to drink from it. I would make an appropriate size coffee cup, but would have to relocate the lathe in order to make a mug of Homer Simpson sized proportions :-) Thanks for watching! All the best. Ray
Hi Andrew. Moonpie Creations did a version using a milky white resin where you could see more of the beans. Maybe a fully clear resin would have bean(!) better.

I also drink green tea and do not drink black tea or coffee. The taste of green tea is so refined and not strong that I was shocked the first and last time I tasted green tea in a paper glass. Good green tea to you Ray. Val
Красиво, необычно. Но я бы не стал пить из этой кружки, тем более горячие напитки
Agreed! The resin used is non toxic and safe for limited food & drink contact. Definitely not for storage. I tried putting hot drink in and the resin was pretty strong. But I would not ordinarily use it for drinking. All the best. Ray.
@@RayWhitbyCreations then okey
Great work Ray, Coffee mug I would say. Is the resin you use food safe or did you coat the interior with something else? The amount of coffee I go through I think I need a bigger mug same size as yours. Take care John P.S> my take on coffee cups is that they are demitasse. But that's just my take :-)
Hi John. I do use food safe resin and would coat the inside with it. I would probably then advocate standing it in water for a while to ensure no chemical leach, though probably superfluous if the resin is considered safe / non-toxic. As long as no beverage is stored in there, I'm happy to drink from it.
I would make an appropriate size coffee cup, but would have to relocate the lathe in order to make a mug of Homer Simpson sized proportions :-)
Thanks for watching! All the best. Ray
❤🔥
Thank you!
Very good but I think it would have been better to leave the epoxy clear so you can see more of the beans!
Hi Andrew. Moonpie Creations did a version using a milky white resin where you could see more of the beans. Maybe a fully clear resin would have bean(!) better.
Is it safe to drink from epoxy?🤔
This epoxy resin is food safe when cured. Though best to seal it internally to be sure.
Mugs how about a Beer Stein unfortunately I'm not a coffee drinker
Ah Rich, now you're talking .Perhaps a vessel with hops in the resin... All the best. Ray
I don't know about that music Ray....
Yup, it sucks. I really want multiple audio channels per video. Can have talk over, music or just machine noise.
The problem with coffee cups is that they're never big enough.
How big would big enough be for coffee?
прикольная кружка и такая пососная ручку
Спасибо за ваш отзыв. How would you do the handle? Appreciate you watching and commenting. Take care. Ray
А что так мало подписчиков?
Спасибо за комментарий! Hopefully the subscribers will come. Perhaps the UA-cam algorithm needs gentle persuasion?! Take care. Ray
Specifically in America...mug.
Good to know!
Could do without the awful music in this video.. not sure if I'll be able to finish watching because of it
Hi Billy. Thanks for the feedback. Please hit mute for the rest of this video and I'll work on future edits! All the best. Ray
