Woodturning - $3 Board To £3000 Art
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn some OSB (chip board), into an ornate vase with an epoxy resin finish.
When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

ummm im not convinced in the slightest that this is worth 3 grand. As lovely a job you done. 👌
Literally 30$ tops
I'd probably get between 50-80 on etsy for it
The streaming views might end up getting him the $3k. Maybe sell it for $100 or so at an artisan fair but definitely not $3k. If he does get $3k, I'll quit my job and go wood turning full time. My brother in law used to hand pour and turn duck calls. He would get $125 out of them.
WE are probably not connected enough. There are a lot of people in the world. It is much larger than you and I my friend.
$3k 🤣
I'm very impressed with the amount of light switches you possess.
That wasn’t even all of them… how many did you count ?
Thank god this was the first comment..... I wasn't the only one thinking this. I counted 6 I think. :D
Hahahahahaha!
@@DoorKnobOwns 12 !
It only took me 9 minutes to figure this one out.
When you find someone who pays 3000 pounds for that, send them my way. I'm trying to sell this bridge.
You’re selling a bridge?
@@JackMackWoodturning Lolololol !!!
I bet it's in London
The bridge?? Or the gallery that sells my work?
@@JackMackWoodturning yes in the middle of the river probably
Awesome. I have recently inherited my late dads bench lathe. I have only done a couple small projects so far, A mushroom, eggcup etc. This gives me some much needed guidance to go to the next level. Thanks heaps from New Zealand.
Cool. Would have been good to see you sand the epoxy down and do a second coat IMO. Gives a smoother and flatter finish
Cheers mate..the finish was perfectly smooth, I think a lot of people who have watched this are mistaking the reflection of the many many lights in my shop as reflection of a pitted surface. .. the finish was sanded. 👍🏻😊
All you say is “cool.”
@@JackMackWoodturning I think it's a combination of the shop lights with the rough texture of the OSB making the finish look poor. Some things aren't captured well on camera.
@@zac9933 I thought the finish looked great.
Cool.
These vids are so hypnotic to watch. I love the contrast between the chipboard and the wood. The slices of magenta and blue/black veneer are the perfect extra touch.
Thanks P. Much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning hi there, loved watching your video in turning this work of art. Just curious where you get the different colored veneers from? Thank you
@@terrywilliams605 just google dyed wood veneer you shouldn’t have much bother finding what you need. 👍🏻
Title "Woodturning - $3 Board To £3000 Art ". Then within the first 40 sec of the video he pulls out a $300 piece of vintage decorative hardwood and trims a healthy piece off.
It’s an old laminated plinth I pulled out a skip buddy, but il sell you it if your paying $300 😉
It’s so amazing it’s value changes currency.😮
Bloody hell! I absolutely love it when someone tries something loopy like using particleboard and having it meant to turn out in a piece that's swanky. I am not a woodworker but I loved seeing this. Well done!
Thanks Tom. So glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Beautiful. Can you get 3000 pounds for that? seems a bit ambitious but definitely worth a lot especially with the time and skill you put into it.
I wanted to ask same question. Did someone actually gave 3000 pounds for this?
Also why go from $-£. Maybe a typo but $3000 still seems a lot.
@@JackMackWoodturning Sounds good to me. You did a wonderful Job on it.
Thanks Keith. Much appreciated buddy 😊👍🏻
No way he gets 3000 pounds for that! Maybe 300, MAYBE.
Love watching your channel. It's so good to zone out and just watch you create amazing somethings out of nothings! Keep up the awesome work
Now I want somebody to make new plywood out of all of your shavings, including the black and red “ribbons!” :)
Just when I think you've gone off the deep end... It turns out to look this great! Kinda makes me think of old Egyptians... Very nice
Like a canopic jar?
Great bowl. The partial board is stunning and you got it without noticeable demarcations between the layers. The colored laminates were a nice touch as well.
Thanks Lee. It’s all in the details 😊👍🏻
Mmmmmm. Sandwich 🥪. Delicious
Hope you have strong teeth 🦷 🤣
Oh my gosh I’m so intrigued!
Did you get to the end?
What a fabulous piece again you always amaze me with your masterpieces the finish really made it stand out. You are so clever the way you think how and what to do with what wood you have well done Jack
☺☺☺
I have so much appreciation for the glue up in this video -messy as hell! That's exactly how I do glue ups, not like all these other channels with their surgical precision and never a drop of glue on their hands. Thanks for making me feel like not a failure.
Check this one out 😆😉

My philosophy is if I didn't get it everywhere , including in my hair, then I didn't use enough.
One thing I learned from this. Is you have a lot of light switches.
Great project.
Haha indeed I do. 😊👍🏻😉
I thought that I would watch the first minute and then the result and maybe a few seconds in between, but I watched the whole 10 minutes and I don't know where the time went. Thanks a lot for the video.
Thanks Martin. Glad you enjoyed it. Where are you watching from?
Amazing work!
But I would've carved all the way to the hard wood so that the internal base would have had a nice dark red contrast to the OSB walls :)
not amazing!
Mary ! You rude little tike you. 😆
Well that turned out stunning.
Thanks Laura. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
That's cool and different Jack
Thanks Clint 😉👍🏻
A chip board pot....nice
That’s essentially what you see in the video 👍🏻 well played mr rat
Stuff like this from you and only a handful of others are exactly why I’m literally aspiring to buy myself a lathe. This stuff is just stunning how it turns out.
Nice one C. Happy to help if you have any questions 😊👍🏻
I started on a very small from a lathe I loaned from my local woodturning club. If you want to get started, I'd join a club as soon as you can. The woodturning community is great! My first larger lathe was broken when I bought it for £50 but easily fixed for £35 (a £700 lathe when new!) definitely not as nice a Jack's lathe but does the job great as a hobbiest. You can see how I repaired it on UA-cam by typing in 'M950 lathe repair'. Good luck and enjoy!
> how it TURNS out
I see what you did there
So beautiful it looks like it’s made from hay ore coconut fibre. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰good job well done

Now I want a lathe
Get one ! You’ll love it
I love 💘 💛 it. Really beautiful 😍. I would definitely have that piece in my home any day!!!
Thanks Maria. 😊👍🏻😉
What at "THREE GRAND"
3 grand is 3000
Looks like shredded wheat. Beautiful!!
Sure does. I fancy a bowl now 😊👌🏻
Clever thumbnail. Got me to fast forward all the way through even 😂
You skipped all the good bits?
3 things that are true 1) there is way more than $3 worth of wood in this 2) Probably not worth $3000 but 3) this is super cool. Nice work.
I would happily pay up to $30 for this piece. Prettiest bit of OSB I've ever seen. Congrats!
This piece sold for £3,000 in an art gallery before I published the video. I imagine the buyer would be looking for a little more than £30 for you to take it off their hands 👍🏻

Just goes to show how much forward vision you have. I would never had thought that you could work with that sort of chip board wood, Well done.

@@JackMackWoodturning Well everything taking into consideration, I can understand why you would ask that amount. But sadly that is to rich for me, I stick to admiring you from a far. Its a lot cheaper Haha
Haha. I was just wondering. Shy bairns ‘n that 🤣
WOW !!! What an amazing piece of art, Great job 👍👍👍
The combination of hardwood and chip wood is reminiscent of mid-century modern. Utilitarian and decorative. Very attractive. While you are working hard, I’m relaxing with the hypnotic spinning. Very enjoyable. Thanks.
Another of your beautiful pieces of art. Thanks for the journey on this one❤
Thanks Barb. Had a lot of hate on this one 🤣👍🏻😊

You never cease to amaze Jack! Unique and a really great piece. The contras of wood to particle board with that finish is just perfect! Priceless! 😃
Cheers David. You think it’s priceless?
@@JackMackWoodturning indeed Jack! It's your great skill! Be well man..
Not priceless, Jack's valued that work at $3,000! I'm in the wrong game me thinks.
Value and beauty are subjective. The value of something is defined by what someone is willing to give for it. If a piece speaks to someone in a special way, then anything is possible. Well done.
Awesome work! You got me when you added epoxy! Nice idea too keeping it spinning so you won't have to deal with the runs. Inspired!
Wow !! Very interesting concept... the vase look beautiful, amazing. Jack you never cease to amaze your viewers. I hope all is well with you. Take care thanks 😊
Thanks Jose. Much appreciated my friend 😊👍🏻
I would definitely pay $3000.00 or even more for a vase. Good job.
Nice one John, my website should be live next week. jackmackwoodturning.com
Oh yeah?.....
I wouldn't pay that much for a vase. I don't think anyone would unless a famous name.
Still, at it I see Jack.
Absolutely B. 😊👍🏻

Be honest??? It is honest, you choosing to believe it or not is entirely up to you pal.
it's always moving to watch someone who so utterly knows what he's doing.
Thanks Jim. What do you do?
Hi Jack! You vase reminds me so much of the early modern look of the early 70s that I loved so much. We called the style here in Canada “Vorlage”. Beautiful work. Thanks for the trip of nostalgia!
No probs Sylvie. Thanks for sharing. I haven’t encountered Vorlage before 👍🏻😊
Even with all those tools and shop your damn good
Thanks Tim. More tools make lighter work 😊👍🏻
That OSB chipboard actually looks really good!!!
Way better than I expected. Great job!
I’d like to see more of these.
I made an OSB Vase about 10 years back. It still looks good even though it had spent a lot of time in the Sun on a windowsill. It took a lot of sanding but you can get a good finish. As you can see here
Nice one man. Great minds.. 👍🏻😊

@@JackMackWoodturning not necessarily but I did get super tired bc of the money stash one and maxed out lathe one bc they were so satisfying
Haha. So they make you sleepy but hold your interest ?
@@JackMackWoodturning abso-fricking-lutely
😆 fantastic
I missed these woodworking videos. I'm glad they got some new ones!
Plenty more to come Bev. Where have you been?
Back in the early 60s my uncle Doug used to build custom furnture we help sand tables, chairs. He set up the wood lathe and let me and my brother have at it, lol 12yrs old b
Ok so I can see this from more than one perspective. I work at a lumberyard and I do woodworking so I can understand the time and effort of turning something like this plus I imagine you sanded and polished it so that’s a decent amount of time which I assume is where a large chunk of the cost comes in also I doubt it was only $3 in materials if you included the resin and lumber the last couple years has skyrocketed in price. But on the other hand $3000 seems steep for something made primarily from some type of a particleboard/osb. But if someone is willing to pay that more power to you it just seems a little out there for what it is. Now if this is custom work at their request then I can see how that price would be more fair. Either way good job it looked good for something not commonly used for crafts
Hey Rip. I think having the ability to charge this much is more to do with creating a name for yourself among local collectors. That way any piece you make is a one off with a story. The pieces have a QR code on the base which leads to a video of the piece being made, along with a certificate of authenticity. It seems mental to some people. I think if an NFT can sell for £250k, £3k for a one off tangible piece with a story seems more reasonable. 🤣😊👍🏻
How is your woodturning business doing?
@@JackMackWoodturning a very good reply!
Wow! Not only is your work beautiful, but so is your video work. I'm sure there are thousands of others like me out there saying "I wish I could do something like that," but few can do what Jack Mack does.
Thanks D, I appreciate that buddy. But I feel like anyone can do anything with enough time and effort. Mostly anyway 😊👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning With all respect, I'd need to buy another house with enough space for some of the gear you have in your shop. I envy that, too.
Then you need a bigger house. Time + Effort brother 😊👍🏻😉
Love the Mahogany. I always enjoy when I get a chance to work it.
I have a load of it at the moment. It is nice to work with 😊👍🏻
ua-cam.com/video/XL4hseWdFaI/v-deo.html
That turned out awesome! Thanks for sharing. You are artist.
That is very impressive. I’m amazed at how you can draw a straight line down the middle of a piece of wood b
I use my fingers as a guide they reference of the straight edge of the wood.. if the edge was bumpy the line would also show the bumps.. does that make sense ?
@@JackMackWoodturning yes, very much so. Thanks for explaining.
Interesting how the OSB turned out. Such a texture and coloring.
Thanks D, have you seen anything like this before?
@@JackMackWoodturning someone playing with coconut shell, but that wasn’t turned. Turning a set and using flamingo pink resin for someone with a well done tiki bar would be awesome. The other might be paring with some darker hardwood, opaque dark grey leaning towards pearl resin, and selling it to the people leaning towards the medieval stuff. It was really neat how that turned out, and you got me fired up about doing something with OSB now…
CONGRATULATIONS - It's gorgeous.
Iam big fan of you sir. Daily watching your buetiful videos. Very interesting. I'm from Andhrapradesh in INDIA.

Thanks P. Crazy what you can do with scraps right?
This is fantastic work and a beautiful result, well done! Working mostly with metal I'm tempted to try something like this on my metal lathe.
Sounds like fun. Let me know how you get on. I turned brass on my wood lathe. It was easier than expected. You may not like the video though, being a metal worker 😊👍🏻

There’s a sucker born every minute, you’ve apparently sold them a lot of stuff
What makes you say that?
I have been watching your videos and find them so soothing to watch....your so talented sir!!
When I first saw the fiberboard I thought this was a waste of time. Then the texture on the board made this a brilliant work of art.. My hats off to you Sir.
Thanks D. You going to try it?
But £3000 work of art ? Come on !
@@JackMackWoodturning Why the crazy title though like $3~£3000 work of art ? Unless it’s clickbaiting my friend.
You make beautiful things,a lot of people do but they don’t put titles like that.
Its something that just really bugs me, because you don’t need to. P x
Thanks buddy. Not to make you feel silly or
anything but this piece actually did sell for
£3,000 before I came to publish the video.
Hence the title. I didn't include the finishing on the video as it's a 4 day (1 hour per day) boring process. And During the editing I had no idea it was going to sell for what it did or I'd have included shots of it with a glass finish too.
You can see the type of finish it got on my
latest video " glass like finish"
The piece sold in a galley who price the work as they see fit and take 49% of the sale price. Totally mind blowing but the gallery also sell paint on canvas form living artists for upwards of 25k .. for their customers a little vase for 3k is nothing. I don't sell for this price all the time, obviously, which is why it made for a good title, as it is extraordinary.
I appreciate why you want to jump to conclusion. The internet tends to bring that trait out in people. No hard feelings here
It looks like a lovely piece of pottery. The shine is beautiful!
Thanks S. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
Why $ to £?
Sure, anyone can take $10 of paint and turn it into a $50,000,000 Art piece.... you just have to be a super talented artist with years of experience :-P
