The HDS-990 is built with audiophile-grade materials throughout, all working together to play your high-resolution music with the best sound possible. The internal DAC plays up to 24-bit/192kHz files, and the Bluetooth supports higher-quality codecs like aptX HD, LDAC, and more. The HDS-990 has one job, and that is to make music sound amazing while you drive.
In addition to the DAC, Alpine has built in a robust amplifier to the source unit. It provides 25 watts RMS per channel, and also some digital signal processing, including a 10-band parametric EQ, a sophisticated crossover system, and time alignment, giving you pinpoint control over your sound.
Unlike most traditional receivers, the HDS-990 consists of a separate source unit and dashboard commander, the latter of which you can mount on your dash or really anywhere it makes sense in your car. Thx for doing good with kv32hv600 as it lasts over a decade and a half of service with no trouble and has great black levels, is real forgiving on the wii console family edition as well you know

You talking about the "chicklets" button style design? I was always a huge fan of those personally. When it comes to Hi-Res playback this HDS-990 is king!
They need to do it. Like Blaupunkt is doing it. Would love to see a 7618r or 7909 design with fresh tech on the inside. Would love to put this in my 1997 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit.
Hello. The HDS-990 manual indicates that the maximum number of songs that can be played via the USB input is 10,000. Considering there are 3 USB ports on the back of the HDS-990, is that 10,000 songs max per USB port, or 10,000 songs max for the entire unit? Just wanted to confirm before I run additional USB extension cables to the other 2 USB ports for additional Hi-Res music files. Thanks in advance.
Max. When three USB thumb drives are connected at the same time, the unit will automatically combine the contents of all three USB devices and all three USB devices become one source.
Can the HDS-990 integrate with a typical head unit or something like an alpine Halo11 without using speaker level inputs? How about if I am also integrating the Alpine HDP-D90 DSP? It would be nice if Alpine would have provided an optical output on the Halo series head units to integrate with the Status products.
The HDS-990 is not designed to work in conjunction with another radio; but you can connect to the Alpine HDP-D90 via speaker-level inputs, RCA, and even the Coax digital input if you are using a head unit without the optical digital output.
Hey crutchfield, while using this unit with a USB drive, does the software use a file explorer type of interface to browse through media? Or does it auto-sort by categories such as artist/genre etc...
You can search your USB device's stored music files/folders by category and alphabetically. You'll also be able to control playback functions such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Random/Repeat. In addition, the unit will display song/artist/album information (including album art). When two USB thumbdrives are connected at the same time, the unit will automatically combine the contents of both USB devices to make them one source. The USB-A 2.0 ports do not support media playback from an Apple iOS or Android OS device, USB hubs and card-readers, or laptops and computers.

Hi, I have a huge dilemma of choosing this over buying a new head unit (alpine ilx 509) ..the current setup is - stock head unit capable of CarPlay and android auto, alpine pxe 850s processor ..my need is to have a setup to play high resolution audio but at the same time I don’t want to SWITCH to take calls and then switch source to another player to listen to high res music..can I continue to use stock headunit and have great high res exp as well ? Thanks in advance!
We cannot see a way to add this to a system, still use the systems Bluetooth without needing to switch inputs should you answer a call. We wish we had different news for you there

I have this unit installed in my vehicle, and supposedly the HDS-990 offers the ability to play Hi-Res music via Bluetooth Audio (with an android phone/LDAC). However, when I select a Hi-Res track on my phone, the red Hi-Res indicator light does not come on the HDS-990 interface. Is there a settings adjustment that I need to make to fix this? @crutchfield Thank you for your response. I purchased the HDS-990 from an authorized Alpine retailer. In doing additional research since I posted my original question, I discovered that the LDAC technology (on my android phone for Bluetooth Audio) only goes as high as 990kbps. Even with my phone settings adjusted for 24-bit/96kHz playback, music files via Bluetooth Audio only come through at 990kbps, which apparently the HDS-990 does not consider Hi-Res Audio...thus the red indicator light does not come on. Am I wrong in this assumption, or would the BT Audio instructions on Page 14 of the manual solve this issue?
24-bit/95kHz (900 kbps) is supported via Android smartphones supporting LDAC and considered High Res.

With the HDS-990 interface not identifying the playback quality of Bluetooth Audio Hi-Res files (via the red Hi-Res indicator light), I was skeptical if the music was actually being transmitted based on the LDAC maximum settings adjustments I made on my android phone. Hi Robert, thanks for reaching out. The Alpine HDS-990 Digital Media Receiver is designed to replace a factory radio. Currently though, radio replacement is not recommended for your 2019 C-HR due to the configuration of the dash and no mounting kit being available. Does the HDS-990 offer equalization presets? If yes, how many presets are there?
The HDS-990 features 10-EQ presets, and a customizable 10-band EQ for custom tuning.

Hi. I will be running the HDS990 with just 1set of HDZ65C speaker . Can I use run it with the build in amplifier in HDS990 ? Or do I need to get an additional alpine status amp ? My aim is to get maximum sound quality (don’t have to be too loud ) . Hope to seek some advice from you. Thanks
Some external amps offer better sound quality than the amps built into receivers. Ideally, you would install a class AB amp when shooting for maximum sound quality.
They just can't hit the mark. That 3/4 DIN display is one of the dumbest decisions I've seen Alpine do in a while.
They have other options .

Why can’t it support BT phone calls?
Hi Aldan, while the HDS-990 Digital Media Receiver does support audio streaming via Bluetooth, Alpine did opt to leave out hands-free calling support on this system. What is your exact setup? Would you like help choosing another option that does support hands-free calling as well?
Sony XAV 9500-ES is a better upgrade. It does CarPlay, Android auto, and a bigger screen.
