VICE News The number 1 place in increase is Palma de Mallorca. Berlín is nothing in comparison. Get your statistics right. A flat used to cost 700 EUR/month and now it's 1200 EUR/month..... For a decent looking flat.
The first time I entered a coffee shop in Berlin, I was surrounded by people talking about films, art, and just creating cool things. Never experienced that anywhere else in the world. I love that place.
As a born and bred Berliner, these are the type of people Berliners absolutely hate. Its not a personal attack on them but basically the refugees and immigrants are not the problem. Its wealth economic immigrants like Americans, Brits, etc. coming to Berlin and driving the tolerable rent prices up with all their useless start-ups and cafe houses. They are driving out immigrant populations that have been a staple to this cities rich culture for decades. So instead of amazing home-made Turkish and Arab food that is cost efficient you are getting detox smoothies and vegan shakes for 15 EUR. Each has its benefits but I really hope people stop coming to Berlin and the hype dies down because eventually it will not be an affordable city. Also nobody fucking buys a ABC Monatskarte for 120 EUR. With the abonnement, the monthly ticket is around 62 EUR.
The Berlin hype has been fading for years now, but the housing and cost of living crisis persists because it is not being handled properly. Prior to it being a big issue, Berlin was considered fairly under populated for the capacity it could house so despite a jump in people moving there (especially young people from other highly developed countries) in the 00s, it didn't start becoming an issue until the early 2010s and increasingly more so.
Don't believe the hype. The prices are exploding, the search for an apartment can go for months due to horrible deficit, wages are inferior to even rest of Germany. Winter in Berlin is long and extremely depressive and summer can be very short. Many of those old houses have a really terrible heat isolation and electricity and heating prices are some of the highest in Europe. Its a city where many dream to come, but without a well-payed contract moving here can be extremely frustrating.
Nice seeing the nicer side of Berlin living. In my experience, Berlin is a total shithole inhabited by some of the most unpleasant people I have ever met.

Berlin is by FAR the coolest and most tolerant city that ive EVER lived in (Going off of NYC, London, Paris, Edinburgh as comparisons ) Berlin isnt expensive, its not aggressive, its a walkable, easily bikeable open minded city. Rents are far easier to manage than other Capital cities in Europe / North America, food isnt expensive and University is free. Health care is also covered either 100 or 50% by your employer. All around Berlin is definitely one of those "I could live there for a long time" kind of cities, because it takes a lot of the stress out of living and it feels like theres more time to relax and enjoy things.
I lived in Frankfurt from 2012-2014 and visited Berlin in the summer of 2012. I went to Amsterdam, followed by Berlin, and it is still by far the best trip I ever had. I rented a bike and drove around the Berlin Wall area and went to several museums. I still yearn to go back and see visit Berlin as well as Germany again.
good series but I don't know why vice picked someone who moved to berlin 8 years ago before the rents went up like crazy. nowadays he would either live in a 60sqm flat with his girlfriend for 980 or paying 2000 euros for the flat they showed in the video. everything they said in the video is true for people who came to berlin 10 years ago but most of the rents doubled by then, in some areas they even tripled
Unlike in SF our government is actually trying to help though, ever since we kicked most of the neoliberals out. For instance, we've just introduced a rent freeze and limitation, and a system to force cheating landlords to pay tenants back. Now if we'd only finally ban sitting on empty property and build some affordable housing rather than fancy condos...
OK but who lives in a 90sqm apartment? I don't really know many young people who can afford that kind of place. And 900€ seems crazy for such a huge apartment. Some of my friends pay 400€ for a ROOM in a shared flat. This is not really accurate
Yea, 980€ for such a flat is extremely low. I pay around 1100€ (a little more than 1200$) for 68sqm in a city of around 80.000 people near Hamburg. In bigger cities like Hamburg or Munich I'd pay somewhere between 1400€ (Hamburg) or up to 2500€ (Munich) for a flat that size. Well, but I mean Berlin is a pretty shitty city imo lol. I wouldn't necessarily live there even if apartments are relatively cheap.

Berlin actually is not bad overall and when considering the other comparable options. The other major western cities are really expensive now. Berlin is becoming more expensive, but still much more affordable than London, Paris, and NYC. The weather can suck for 6-8 months, unless you like dark and cold, but it sucks in those other major cities as well. The US does have alternatives to NYC that offer much better weather year round, like LA, but you still have to live in the US with all of its problems right now and pretty much every desirable major city in the US is more expensive than Berlin now. Of course, Barcelona and Lisbon have better weather and are on the ocean but Spain and Portugal's economies still suck and it costs more to live in them compared to what people earn compared to Berlin from what I've heard.
The fastest rising living costs in the world, nearly impossible to find a flat, job market is highly competitive and over saturated with qualified individuals from all around the world, universities have waiting lists as big as the first and new testaments of the Bible, and the immigrant office is packed every. Single. Day. Then you have a state that is burdened by public debt that it has carried for decades.
you could have gotten such a place 8 or 10 years ago. Such a apartment will now cost 2k easily (which is more than than the monthly net income you get out of 40k gross per yeas)
The minimum wage in Germany is roughly $22K a year. Minimum wage in Turkey however is $6268 A YEAR... Consider the fact that turkey is a pretty developed nation and a lot of expensive clothing brands make their clothes in Turkey.
Arthur We don't want to forget what it brought to us prior to its demolition . Peace and cultural independence .Some of us East Germans would prefer having the whole wall instead of a tiny chunk.
He moved in that apartment 8 years ago! Now it would be 2000/ month for sure. Myself I will never ever move out of mine again, cause then I will be skrewed.
Interesting video. You should do one about Lisbon since the city is growing due to the fact of being cheap to foreigners. This, unfortunately, is making the city incredibly expensive for natives. Keep up!
Let’s face it, more often than not, “artists” are going to starve in almost any city in the world. Only reason this guys isn’t is because of the business he’s got. Rally hard to mess up a bar as long as you got capital and some regulars. Vice can we please see this series in the perspectives of working class professionals that actually have a standing chance to score a work visa in another developed country?
Ryan C Depends on the artist, could specify what kind of artists do you mean? I know personally a couple of artists who find a job in their special field and make a comfortable living. Photographer, artist (drawnings), musician and 2 writer who found kinda quickly a work.
That's not true. I know plenty of mediocre artists that manage to make a great living. Kinda wish they would have went into a different field so the real artists could have more...
Being working class in Berlin is better than any other European or American major city. It's just a hella lot more affordable while the wages are only marginally lower than elsewhere.
As mentioned by many other commenters, Berlin rents are somewhat affordable compared to Munich or Hamburg. But the rents in other german cities can naturally be way lower. I live in Hannover, sharing a flat with my mate and we each pay 300€ ("Warmmiete") for a 70m^2 appartement. Now that's affordable. :D
Dan Klorix Yes but Berlin is a leftard shit hole and the people lives from wellfare. So for us Germans its very cheap but for Berliners it‘s expensive.
My brother lived in Berlin for 2 years, we are from LA and had nothing but praises for this city I hope to one day visit and enjoy this wonderful city as well.
$1,156...for a 2 bedroom apartment with dinning room...on the east coast that would be 3,000 or more. Your in for a shock..as property gets heated. Those days are numbered.
Berlin is one of the less capital Citys how make less money than they earn .. And their police cars are Opel .. Other german Staates have mostly Mercedes , BMW at least VW ...
i have no fucking clue what that means and the fact that 43 people upvoted that comment worries me that im either too stupid to understand or 43 individuals should rather not breed
it's a typical cliche movie / tv show trope, of a character that usually comes home from a date or event, and are usually feeling sad and/or depressed, closes their front door after entering, only to lay their back onto it and slowly slides down, letting the overwhelming emotions consume them.
It is not true that Berlin is 100% hipster, get rid of that idea. Berlin is extremely conservative and racism is everywhere (very common here in Germany however) so as homophobia. I find it quite inspiring the are a large and evergrowing number of students that are very very open minded and friendly and they spare this love all over the city and cultivate this fine idea of Berlin. The art scene for me is top in the world and i have lived in London for years and travelled uncointless times to USA's art hubs. Berlin is like an amazing city; pollution is almost non existant, green spaces and trees in every corner, history and amazing architecture everywhere, very affordable rent, great employment rate, very friendly young people. The only dark side if the 70% of radical conservative living in it and the evergrowing and lasting violence towards immigrants specially Turks.
I'm from Porto Portugal, and my dream is to soon move to Berlin. I want to feel connected with the arts all over the place. it looks like paradise to me. I enjoyed Cologne/Koln, but there's something about Berlin. Wish me luck
Video was ok but prices for rents are a little off. I'd estimate his place would be closer to 1175 Euros now, not 980. Prices are going up really fast. Something like 20% a year.
I was surprised that all of the menu boards and signs were in english. Seems kinda rude to not have at least some of it in german underneath the english tbh.
Armando Montoya actually I read Berliners are complaining about expat cafes/restaurants where no one speaks german but only English. How very American.
you would never find an appartment in berlin like this now... rents are so much more expensive now and it’s very hard to get one (even though it’s overpriced)
Some points he mentioned aren't true. Im a berliner (born and raised) and ive had family here for centuries and ive been in every corner of the city. Its just a couple of districts that are crowded by non-berliners who came here two or three years ago and call themselves berliners. They ignore districts where the real people live who do struggle with paying rent. I want to keep living here because it's my home and the place i want my future children to grow up in. I'm connected to this city, my history is deeply rooted there. And now some degenerates come here and think they cool af entrepreneur shit is what berlin is all about. The people who shaped this city shouldn't be forgotten!

I miss berlin so fucking much right now. Having moved to the US in an area where just existing somewhat comfortably costs my wife and I $4k a month has just drained the life out of me.
Pros and cons with every city. It is a transit city, not a lot of people can take it long term. It's not really a place where one stays for the rest of your life. It's a great place to be an artist and some perks for having kids, but the winters are brutal! One can not truly understand it until you go through one. It's not even that it's so cold, it's the lack of sun and blue skies.
I live in Amsterdam and it's the same, as well as uk and many other places in northern europe... For same reason it's the trade off when you want to live in a country with a good economy, especially here in europe
I live in Berlin my whole life and I really love this city! It's so green, cultural, vibrant and enjoyable, you always find new spots, public transport is great, there are cultural events everywhere... I think I won't move out here so fast :)
You should do "What It Costs To Live In Dublin(Ireland)" next. Recently, there has been a huge increase in rent and property prices, especially in Dublin's city centre - 1,000 euro a month could probably get you a 1 bed apartment, if even. Its predicted (and accepted now) that my age group (18-25 year olds) will more than likely never have the opportunity to move out or afford rent for an apartment.
Wow look at what social democratic housing policies can do for working class people unlike in america where rents skyrocket for smaller and smaller housing
MrDennis21jel they don't have it completely better. Finding housing is a major issue there right now. It works when population levels stay around the same but it's been increasing and they can't keep up. The newer places are more often a lot more expensive as well.
You are oblivious, there is a terrible deficit of housing in Berlin due to these policies, each apartment showing attracts 50 to 100 people. Rent prices increase 8 % a year and most of the new housing built is unaffordable for working class.
I was on Berlin on vacation during my reading week and I fell in love with it. The people are so kind and helpful , the sights are beautiful , the food and diversity of restaurants id spectacular ( DONER KABABS ARE AWESOME), and it can be pretty inexpensive if you look in the right places. Im going there again later in the year and i cant wait .🎉
I lol'd but for the record this is sarcasm, right? ruin your great city too with an infomercial about how great it is... it's not like it'll cause mass migration really. I think most people are aware of how great toronto and berlin are.
Having lived in Boston, I don’t think your public transit is expensive. Good 24 hour service isn’t available most places. Everytime I tried to get to a doctors appointment the engine would catch fire or someone would jump into the train and you’d be waiting for ages while they pulled them out of the track.
I started a cement foundation company in Dallas, Tx with a $45k business loan, paid it off in two years, employ 15 people, and my fiancé and I have closed on our first house, and are getting married in November. Point is, you’ve gotta take risks, especially at a young age. If you asked me 10 years ago when I was still living in Mexico if this was going to be the life I lived at 21, i would’ve thought it was a pipe dream.
love berlin, have been living here for 4 years and not impressed by this report. 1. NO ONE eats toast like that. you have amazing local bakeries at every corner, no need to eat factory produced "toastbrot" 2. if you get a year ticket for public transport, the cost goes way down, to 65 euro a month. plus they also have less expensive options, like a ticket you can use after 10pm. 3. this is such a boring depiction of the city... feels like it's just an ad for the comedy club... better story would have been what it's like doing comedy in a country where people have a peculiar sense of humor. kind of disappointed with this one, guys.
You know there's a cultural difference between the US and Germany when it comes to cheating? It's not as bad here as it is with you - not quite as loose as in France but much looser than in the USA.

Of course, Barcelona and Lisbon have better weather and are on the ocean but Spain and Portugal's economies still suck and it costs more to live in them compared to what people earn compared to Berlin from what I've heard.
wow their flat is sooo lovely. Now I want to move there
no all the flats are like that and is very diffcult to find one, take in acount that the job market is really bad also
The fastest rising living costs in the world, nearly impossible to find a flat, job market is highly competitive and over saturated with qualified individuals from all around the world, universities have waiting lists as big as the first and new testaments of the Bible, and the immigrant office is packed every. Single. Day. Then you have a state that is burdened by public debt that it has carried for decades.
you could have gotten such a place 8 or 10 years ago. Such a apartment will now cost 2k easily (which is more than than the monthly net income you get out of 40k gross per yeas)
2x that is still cheaper than in London, Amsterdam, Munich so still a good deal!

Combined annual income is $41k meaning he is making minimum wage with the added stress of running a business. Sounds like a great deal.
thats quite a bit over minimum wage actually.
In my country (Italy), an employee's minimum wage is more than half of his salary... Just saying...
The minimum wage in Germany is roughly $22K a year. Minimum wage in Turkey however is $6268 A YEAR... Consider the fact that turkey is a pretty developed nation and a lot of expensive clothing brands make their clothes in Turkey.

Arthur true.
Arthur We don't want to forget what it brought to us prior to its demolition . Peace and cultural independence .Some of us East Germans would prefer having the whole wall instead of a tiny chunk.
it tells you a lot about Berlin that a large luxury apartment block was built on the death strip here a few years ago cutting through the Wall.

Interesting video. You should do one about Lisbon since the city is growing due to the fact of being cheap to foreigners. This, unfortunately, is making the city incredibly expensive for natives.

Ryan C
Depends on the artist, could specify what kind of artists do you mean?
I know personally a couple of artists who find a job in their special field and make a comfortable living.
Photographer, artist (drawnings), musician and 2 writer who found kinda quickly a work.
Combined annual wage of of 35 000 euros is actually below the average wage in Germany so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Making a go of a bar is incredibly difficult, most go bust, most never make a profit and if lucky manage to just about cover costs.
They're rent is very low. It is uncommon, normally it would be around 1500-2000 Euros.
Nope more like 1000-1400
@@PodcastCentral333 yeah if you rented it 5-10 years ago
@@aga2353 nope. I see 2 bedroom places for 1200 everywhere. Perhaps just not Kreuzberg

Yes but Berlin is a leftard shit hole and the people lives from wellfare. So for us Germans its very cheap but for Berliners it‘s expensive.

I don't understand... can you translate to proper english?
You got that from just four minutes of him talking about cost of living?
i have no fucking clue what that means and the fact that 43 people upvoted that comment worries me that im either too stupid to understand or 43 individuals should rather not breed
it's a typical cliche movie / tv show trope, of a character that usually comes home from a date or event, and are usually feeling sad and/or depressed, closes their front door after entering, only to lay their back onto it and slowly slides down, letting the overwhelming emotions consume them.
I love you
Absolutely loved Berlin! I’m from New Zealand

Alone in Berlin is such a good book, and I like to imagine the city more like its it is presented in that than in this video
I was surprised that all of the menu boards and signs were in english. Seems kinda rude to not have at least some of it in german underneath the english tbh.
Armando Montoya actually I read Berliners are complaining about expat cafes/restaurants where no one speaks german but only English. How very American.
Yeah, its awful. German first, English underneath. Typical colonial, arrogant attitude of all English speakers.
you would never find an appartment in berlin like this now... rents are so much more expensive now and it’s very hard to get one (even though it’s overpriced)
He is living with is gf in such a big space?! what a waste! so many families would die to have a big flat like that
Cant hate the player. Hate the game
Why pay the same price for 40m2 if he can have a 90m2 flat?!

Where in the US do you live?
Pros and cons with every city. It is a transit city, not a lot of people can take it long term. It's not really a place where one stays for the rest of your life. It's a great place to be an artist and some perks for having kids, but the winters are brutal! One can not truly understand it until you go through one. It's not even that it's so cold, it's the lack of sun and blue skies.
I live in Amsterdam and it's the same, as well as uk and many other places in northern europe... For same reason it's the trade off when you want to live in a country with a good economy, especially here in europe

Why is it called Dublin? Cuz the prices are doublin' and doublin'!
Wow look at what social democratic housing policies can do for working class people unlike in america where rents skyrocket for smaller and smaller housing
No. We had something like a wall in this city and it only catches up now. This is why rent is so low. It will increase alot in the next 50 years.
MrDennis21jel they don't have it completely better. Finding housing is a major issue there right now. It works when population levels stay around the same but it's been increasing and they can't keep up. The newer places are more often a lot more expensive as well.
It's not all good. The film left out the fact that it takes somewhere like 3 months to find a flat in Berlin.
