Berlin's growing Indian community | DW Documentary

- The Indian community in Germany is growing fast, especially in Berlin. How difficult is it to find a new home in a foreign country?
Germany is infamous for its bureaucracy - yet it remains a popular destination for many skilled workers. But it isn't just a good job in the IT sector that can make a strange land home - Amit Kamlapure and his wife Yogita find that it takes a village. A community of close friends, familiar foods, traditions, and festival celebrations with a flavour of their home country of India. Flights to the Indian city of Pune, their home town, are expensive - its not a trip the young couple, that moved to Berlin in June 2022, can make often. We follow Amit in his quest to make Berlin home - setting up his house, commemorating rituals he grew up with in Pune, preparing meals with his wife that remind him of India, and celebrating major festivals like Diwali, the festival of lights, with other Indian Berliners, a growing and thriving community. There are new joys in Berlin too - the couple has grown closer through setting up an independent house for the first time, they are learning the language to make Germany their own as well, and they are adapting to a slower, more thoughtful pace of life that they enjoy much more. We meet Amit just before his first trip home - and hear why such a long time away has not been as hard as he expected, after all, in his new home city.

As a Colombian who lived in New Zealand (high Indian immigrant' rate) and now living in Berlin with my German Frau (really multicultural hehe). What is happening in Germany with the Indian community is totally normal. The Indians coming here are, still, few of them and in general well educated, so you can expect easy integration. However, when the regulations ease more, more people with different backgrounds will arrive and therefore you will likely see more often some acts that are not tolerated here in Germany.

My sister also dreams to settle in Germany. She is a doctor here in India and has the same salary from ages. She also wanted to study medicine in hiedelberg university but couldn't do so because my parents did not want her to. The people from germany in comment section seems so nice and it gives me a sense of relief that she chose the right country.
The reason the immigration experience of Indians in Germany is less problematic, is that it is highly selectively tailored to engineers, doctors, and highly educated individuals. This strategy is superior to mass refugee importation from war zones such as Syria or Ukraine.
India is growing big time i guess Indians rather than investing in abroad invest the same money in india. 200k$ for house in Germany can get a luxury villa in india more over there are lot of companies in india with lot of opportunies. Even Government policies are strong its time for all the indians who left should come back develop their home country.

You should visit Ontario, Canada... it looks like someone picked up an entire Indian state and just dropped it in Canada, as there are hundreds of thousand of people from India moving to Canada every year. (It is quite a cultural shock to those born in Canada to see such a sudden change in society... only 1.5 billion people back in India, waiting to move to Canada.)
All 1.4 Billion can't move. Moreover in recent year the number of students applying in Canada have decreased.

Lol, 27% of all new immigrants to Canada are Indians . Indians are immigrating to Canada at such a massive rate per year under the pretense of being foreign exchange students now many of them are homeless and living in tents, 6 or 8 people in a shared apartment . If you want to see a lot of Indians in the same place outside of India, Canada is the place.

I wish the same spirit existed among Indians in the whole of India.
They are over-romantizing Indians out of India, not creating ghettos. Here in Canada, the Indians don’t consider themselves one; they consider themselves Punjabi, Gujaraati, Telgu, and so on. There’s almost minimal to no interaction and a high amount of disgust against other newcomers from South Asia.
Fizi Indians, Mauritian Indians, south African Indians all still follow Hinduism and call themselves part Indians and sanatanis but sadly would not want to live in india and look at West to live but would not assimilate with host country....

Really happy to see hindu Indians enjoying freedom of religion & safety in the Christian west. Hope they can carry these new lessons back to India. India is amongst the top 10 countries for Christian persecution 😔
Number of churches in India- 25071
Number of hindu temples in Germany-102

Bro there are literally a Church in every Indian city or town. I grew up in a small town near Delhi and we had only 3 Christian family in our city yet there were 2 churches and those families left the city and still the churches are there although nobody goes there but churches have been kept alive. So stop believing whatever you see
@@HelloNice-v9u I'm not talking about the past. But the present situation. You can Google top 10 countries for Christian persecution. Make sure you dig deep into any random incident you choose. It's factual with evidence.
@@Thoughtflux There have been some cases of violence I agree which I do condemn but you can't say every Christian in India is persecuted. India is probably one of the most safest countries for Christians in whole of Asia. The little violence that has occurred has been due to some Christian missionaries operating in India who give money and convert Hindus. We just want Hindu Population to not decline nothing else bro already a big chunk of Indian population was converted to Islam by Muslim rulers. We just want to preserve Hindu culture and at the same time we want Christians to practice their religion without any fear. I am Indian and I studied in a Catholic convent school (Many such schools are in india) and 98% of the population in the school were Hindus but we still used to go to church voluntarily. India is safe bro for Christians, please try to ignore some incidents as bad people are everywhere 🙂
@@HelloNice-v9u And there you go with unfounded conspiracy against Indian Christians! Did you bother to look for evidence? Did you bother to ask if bribing to convert is a crime then how come there is not a single legal conviction till date? Did you logically think that if Christianity is nearly 2000 years old in India then how come there are less than 3%Christians in India if conversion is all they want?
Btw, India is amongst the top 10 countries for Christian persecution. And no, you don't know because media cannot talk about it. Those people who run schools & universities are also pretty good in recording & documenting every incident. This is public information. Look it up.

G@@y r@ndi Sita❤
Most SL Tamils are Hindu unlike the rest of the South Asian diaspora.....they always build temples wherever they go.
I lived in Berlin-Germany 20+ years before moving back to England.
I knew that temple dude. He works for the auslander behorde. Some Afghani Hindus came to the temple & needed help so i told them to ask him to write a letter on their behalf but he didn't wanna know & said he can't do anything. I worked in a couple of social projects & have a Diploma in Health & Social Care & must say he could have written a letter & it may have been used to make a final decision on the Afghani Hindus who fled Afghanistan because of the Taliban! Social workers in Germany have lotta power. Whats the use of being a member of a committee when you can't help people who come for help??? Lol
These indians would not even explore out of their community in India . Outside India, they become great friends, eat together without considering castes & class and celebrate festivals together only to feel togetherness & get help in the future if required. One of the ironies of Indian diaspora.
they are everywhere too many.. they're so proud of their country, why don't they just stay there?? they created their own nation in other countries, they employ, rent out, etc to their own people, non stop talking loud on the phone with their language, they don't mixed up, rude really!!🤦♀️🤦♀️
More worse was done by Western countries to us in history we are still coming legally morons😂😂
@@ronaldo77432A lot of you are in my country Mexico. Coming from the darien gap. Please stop coming to my country. Go to Germany instead.👍👍👍
Indians, as a diaspora while generally unproblematic are one of the least integrated immigrant communities. They stick to themselves and try to recreate India wherever they go.
It's like preserving a culture in a different place while interacting in the new place. So being least integrated cannot really describe this situation. Because Indians and even other foreign diaspora want to recreate their own country to preserve their culture even in other countries.
We go to Indian festivals but also celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving and 4th of July. We wish our neighbors “merry Christmas” instead of “happy holidays”. We are vegetarian and don’t drink because of religion. We still hang out at parties and drink non alcoholic beverages and water. We are very assimilated but also enjoy some of what we brought with us.
Such an ignorant comment. Indian diaspora are one of the very few migrant communities which maintains its own identity through its festivals and cultural programs and invites everybody, makes an attempt to mingle/integrate with their new homeland and cultures and most importantly contributes to society and aren't free loaders. Which other diaspora are you comparing it with ?
@@virgilasadon9889That about creating the home country seems rather like a place to be comfortable and familiar. The main reason they integrate so well is that they have a very accommodating religion (like having so many gods, and none saying "I'm the only god" etc so a few new ones is still fine and compatible). That's why they can even happily go to churches.
@@virgilasadon9889 So why cant indians stay back in India and create a great culture. what has india acheived with so much culturism???
50 years ago, they would show videos like How an Indian lives in India. Now, they show how an Indian lives in their country. Some Germans / Europeans will say - Indians aren’t so weird. Indians (in India) will say Germany seems nice 😅
The ones asking why are Indians leaving their country,if it’s so developed..
Well we are a fast developing nation and things are improving rapidly in terms of infrastructure and opportunities etc.
I am fluent in German and could have easily moved to Germany, but I chose not to.
In fact, I feel people should stay back and not run away from the problems here.
The Germans didn’t flee their country after the wars, they rebuilt it. We should do that as well.
But would also point out that Indians in Germany are a highly skilled group of immigrants and Germans should rather be thankful that they are contributing and supporting their economy. Rules have been relaxed because Germany needs people. So please respect and accept the ones who are coming. We are usually a peaceful lot 😊 and respectful as well.
thats my guy thnks for not leaving india
Girl:)!
Good point but isn't there's a problem related to different cultures hating each other for trivial reasons in india
Being a German what I noticed about indians is that they don't tend to mingle with Europeans because of strong inferiority complex. Most of them don't even speak basic German is it too much to expect from them. Too much culturism is bad for any country. I am bit curious aren't the people in the video from the same state??? Considering the fact how diverse india as indians say shouldn't they make German friends or someone outside of their native state??
