Another great video Jonathan, AVD is something I want to start offering to my Clients, so thanks very much. Your idea about doing a separate video on calculating pricing would be greatly appreciated, I often find the azure pricing calculator a challenge and am never actually sure if I trust it.
End of last year I found a video and I tried to implement this. Now , I found your video and this one is excellent, way better than the one I found last year. But, not just this video, all your videos are excellent. Thanks
Jon Thank you immensely for simplifying such a complex subject matter with precision and clarity. Your videos are incredibly informative and straight to the point. Keep up the fantastic work!

I’m going to be greedy and ask if you could do a video on configuring a thin client to connect automatically.
I was stuck on this for about 16 hours. This didn't answer my question, but it did answer others I was going to have. I figured it out thanks to you. Thank you for the great good video.
Would love to see more videos on Azure related topics, PIM, Sentinel, deployment on AVD etc. Great work on making simple and understandale demos for rest M365.
Thanks for your help with this Jonathan. One of my clients was using Windows 365 but they are now looking to move over to Azure Virtual Desktop and this tutorial made it easy to setup and follow!
Appreciated this video as I have been searching for an "Azure for Dummies" course. As clear as your video is, I still have unanswered questions and need next steps videos. I have to create a virtual computer lab for students at my school and am on the struggle bus. :) Already got tripped up in choosing what subscription I need.
A video so excellent I'm saving it. Truly well done. You have the knowledge but you can also teach! One thing I noticed on the Security Type (as of 8/27/24) is that choosing "Trusted launch virtual machines" DOES now auto-check the third "Integrity monitoring" box below. Thanks so much for this!
You added "all users" group rather than "AVD Users" to both assignment and Resource Group permissions. Othat than that it was a very sound video, great explaining and well paced!

Love the video - I would also welcome a video on Azure pricing, especially for things like AVD. Secondly, I'd like a better understanding of how we can pre-install software applications on the AVD so we can have everyone that logs into AVD already have access to everything required. It seems right now, we need to install many applications separately on each user's profile.
Nice one, I've been systadm for AWS cloud for yes, recently had Azure account put my way. Just wasn't sure on the terminology, Thanks the crash just subbed 👍

Love your channel Jonathan. I was missing Windows 365 in this video (especially the comparison), but I was happy to find your earlier Windows 365 video.
@jonathan Edwards - A few scenario-based questions :- 1.what deployment type you have chosen here- Connections go over Internet or Local? 2. You haven't used RDP shortpath or Azure private link-? how to secure the connections here? 3. How to restrict AVD for only RDP/SSH for Azure users.. without publishing any APPs and make them availble only for stepping stone servesr (like jump hosts ) to acess production servers?
great video, thank you! We are starting to look into AVD instead of Citrix DaaS. Same ideas mostly, Citrix offers their layer of management that differs from AVD, but it's $$. If I can get a similar administrative experience then AVD might be for us when our Citrix sub expires!
Jonathan, Love this channel and appreciate your Azure expertise. One question: How does VDI differ from Desktop as a Service (DaaS) in the Microsoft world? What is the use case for DaaS vs. VDI?
Thank you for explaining things so clearly. With you example, how would you create a golden image either from that first host you created or is that not applicable for this method? Would you instead just deploy a new Host Pool if this was a production environment?
Hi Jonathan, I’m a big fan of you, watching every single video. I wonder how would you price the AVD environment to you 11 and 50 user client? Do you find out, if there is a bare minimum from a user count perspective? Thank you so much.
such a great video and explanation can we have more details about the speed of the virtual machine it is a good enough to run a massive programs for example graphic designing programs and more ?
Hey Jonathan, not sure if I just missed it, but you didnt go through the part where you would explain how to shutdown the other VM's while out of office hours?
In your demo, if I install software to access Azure SQL, would it be possible to access it in the multi-session VM? I mean, it would replace my RDS server at the end of the day. Thank you.
thanks Jonathan great video. I am seeing a lot about fslogix as well. How does this fit into all this? what are people using in place of roaming user profiles these days in a physical ad server environment?
Yes, fslogix replaces roaming profiles. In my video i only used one session host so fslogix wasn’t required. In bigger implementations where you’re using multiple session hosts, then you would need to implement fslogix.
@@bearded365guy Cheers Jonathan. What are people using these days is a physical AD deployments. I still have a few customers who yearn for roaming profiles but i refuse to use them. I did here that fslogix can be use used in and old school non virtualised environment. Is there any truth to that? Thanks
What would you say the yearly cost is for a virtual desktop as per the spec you just did. 2 Cores, 8GB, 128GB, Win11 and Office365 installed ?. Wondering if this would be a cheaper option to supplying corporate grade laptops, and move to a BYOD policy. Im an IT admin in a relatively small UK company with 260 laptops/PC's currently.
The cost savings for Azure VD are when you have multiple servers available during business hours and then only one or two out of hours. With clever design you can control costs. We have several clients using this method.
Great channel 😀 If a user logs on to the first host and the next time they logon due to load balancing they are logged on to the second host for their AVD. Would any configurations or changes they did to their profile be lost?
1. If I have my users located at Europe and Asias region then do I need to create different Resource groups for each of them and create Hostpools accordingly, will it cause streaming issues for user when they access from different regions ? 2. If I have Intune deploying required security Apps and Config policies, how do I on board and deploy them if I choose AD join ? as Users need to access on prem infra and there's no Hybrid Entra join option. Thanks.
One thing that caused me pain was Azure VM quotas causing the Host Pool template to fail repeatedly. MIght be a good topic to include on an update of this video.
Hey Jonathan, great video. I do have a doubt. Recently I deployed two AVDs and I have enabled the time redirection for both AVDs under local group policy editor. My question is when I choose the time for windows update and restart as 3:00am, which timezone does the AVD follow? Is it UTC?
Hey Jonathan, Thanks for making this video! :) I just want to confirm where the profiles get stored? Like we need storage accounts for the same right? and what about fslogixs? Could you please make a video on the same!
Thank you, this saved my ass big time, lol. Of course the first VM I deployed failed with an unintelligent DomainJoin/DomainTrust error and ended up as non-contactable. After shitting myself (migration is in one week) I thought I’d try to deploy one more VM to the same pool with exact same settings except for one checkmark: enroll in intune unticked (trial tenant didn’t have intune included). Low and behold it deployed without issues and everything is running perfectly! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Now I just need to figure out how to deploy just a remote app on that vm to end users while admin still has full desktop and how I can schedule it to run only during business hours.
What if you have a Windows 2019/2022 server in Azure, how would you make the users single-sign-on to it? like a file server or print server, or a LOB app that requires login? how to Entra-ID joined Server OS and also add it to Intune?
OK, so for us…… if we needed an app server/SQL server we would have a domain in Azure running AVD. This would mean a DC and using FSLogix for profiles.
Hi Jonathan, what do you say to small/med businesses that still need to purchase thin clients in addition to the AVDs, from their point of view it would be 2x the cost but is this offset with the centralisation benefits that the AVDs provide?
I don’t see too many businesses going down the thin client route. Thin clients are expensive even at the side of a standard device with an i3 processor. I do get the advantages of thin clients though.
How do you secure those AVD-host? prevent user from install executable, web-apps, malware, virus, etc... prevent them from changing major settings for the application to run. how do you manage the users settings, you did not deploy FSLogix?
Hi There, I am looking to automatically shutdown and deallocate VM in Azure Virtual Desktop if no user is connected. is it possible to achieve. I have followed this tutorial to set up AVD. Tried setting up scaling plan but not helping for single user.
Are there any problems using linux clients? Another question: A few years ago, I worked at a company that used ThinClients (very cheap ones) with a simple interface with only host and password fields. Is it possible to use them to connect to AVD?
Jonathan props for your video, I have a question tho. Isn't the second case and third case explained similar? At the end, neither company wanted to spend money on getting their equipment for them and they needed access to a private application. Correct me if am wrong. Additionally, wouldn't be easier to set up Windows in a VMs or EC2 instance and set up a Remote Desktop Connection for the users after installing the desired app in the instance. (Trying to understand AVD cases)
Great stuff as always. I am still a little confused though. If I have an E5 license this comes with VM but you still have to pay extra for usage? Is that right? I am looking for a solution right now that is just for me. I'm on a Mac but need Windows for testing things like Intune setup and also dealing with limitations with Mac Office Applications vs their Windows counterpart. Would you recommend this or some other way to do testing?
For some reason the MFA does not work when I log into my RDP. I just click on the RDP and it loads without prompting for username/password or MFA. Any clue why?
Do we have to Create AADDS at first to get it worked. I have created without AADDS and followed all the steps. But when the remote user is trying to connect the session, it will never happen.
