Thank you, Tony! I’m a classical pianist attempting to learn to play jazz. I’m taking a jazz piano class at my local university and out of all the things we do every week, playing a new song by ear for each other is by far the most important part of class, in my opinion. And I really enjoy your videos and feel that I’ve learned a lot from them - they help reinforce what I’m learning in my class.
Thanks Maestro. BTW, now that you mentioned it, I think of you as my Mentor, even if we never met. I would love to live in Atlanta and to be one of your students but I live in a wood in Italy and I don't think I would find any Jazz Teacher here around even remotely as good as you 😊. A great weekend to everybody 😊.
Thank you sensei! This video is exactly what I’ve needed to whip me into shape about what my 1st steps should be on my jazz piano sojourn. Appreciate the sage advice.
Thank you so much!!!! I am currently a sophomore student majoring in classical piano here in China. I fell in love with jazz piano because of Beegie Adair, so I started to try some jazz by myself on youtube, wanting to learn more of it in the US someday. I learned to read lead sheets, practice through the cycle, and mimic how masters played... Sometimes I got frustrated. But after watching your videos, I know that I have to try everything, the different voicing, the ways to solo so on.. ... Sometimes you mess up in your video and try something different. So, It is normal for a beginner like me to fxxk up, lol. Just try again, and again, and again, then, to summarise. Anyway, I want to let you know that your videos encourage me to keep going.
Thank you, Maestro 🌹Fantastic advice. Inspiring. I've finally decided: Back to the Basic Blues(Tricia Woods- Alfred Books). AND OH MY!!!!all the cool bop licks and riffs are in the JazzBlues Bop Heads.(I think learning Bags Groove,Sandu and Now's the Time, etc will "learn" me in a fun way AND raise /deepen my vocal concept).🌹🌹🌹🌹More Tips, please. I believe you de-stressed/detoxed quite a few of us today. BRAVO, JAZZBROTHER!!!😎😀😎
I think one of your strong contributions is to put things in context. I'm a jazz guitarist and I know theory (and tunes) well. But I'm overwhelmed (in a good way) by jazz piano voicings. For example, you mentioned on a video (Tenderly) that you'd use the open voicings when you got down lower to avoid the LIL. That made perfect sense. The other thing I struggle with some is fingering - I'm fine with scales where it's all laid out, but songs aren't scales - you need to move your hands. That would be a good topic for me.
"Neo Soul... Whatever the hell that is.." Exactly! Neo Soul is what the kids are thinking is jazz 2.0 when in reality, its nothing more than keith Jarrett / George Duke progressions from the 70's.
Tony, do you know who else also emphasized to learn songs? Joe Pass!!! He was adamant about it! Thanks for all the great work you do to help people understand and love music! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎼🎶🎵🎹🎵🎶🎼

Tony, your assessment of the blues is correct.
Even Charlie Parker said,
"All I'm playing is the blues".

I hate blues but I love jazz
But Jazz ain't nothing but the blues.... Plus opera, ragtime, and everything else
@@johnrothfield6126 Just no, it originated from it and has (can have) large similarities, especially in concepts. But it's not inherently the same.
I hope I can play wrong someday 😃🤣
