  • Architect and designer Patrick Bernatz invites us inside his beautifully restored 1890’s home in Los Angeles, California.
For more extraordinary home tours, visit our website: homeworthy.com/
Restoring a 1890’s Primordial Victorian home was a decade-long labor of love for architect Patrick Bernatz and his wife. Patrick sought to rediscover the California of his and his wife's childhood memories - resulting in an extensive renovation project that preserved the home's authenticity and charm.
A striking feature of this historic home is the custom-designed furniture crafted from locally sourced materials. The original flooring was carefully maintained, highlighting the home's historical roots. In the pursuit of authenticity, new additions to the structure were seamlessly integrated by drawing inspiration from typologies of sleeping porches and bungalows.
Throughout the house, a dedication to the preservation of historical elements is evident, with many materials, including salvaged or replicated moldings, seamlessly blending with the past. The garden, adorned with native plants, provides a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle, reflecting the couple's commitment to a more sustainable lifestyle. Patrick's hotel design background shines through, emphasizing eco-conscious design practices. His home is a living testament to history and a vision of a sustainable architectural future, where past and present beautifully coexist.

As a San Diegan, I loved watching this video of such a lovely home in nearby L.A. The host was great and showed a real appreciation for the natural elements of the home and the garden that make Southern California such an incredibly wonderful place to live. It's nice to celebrate a home that isn't about the biggest, grandest, and showiest, but one that has heart, integrity, and culture. Wish there were more homes and families like this in SoCal. Great video, thanks so much, Homeworthy!

Absolutely agree! All the houses showcased on Homeworthy are beautiful, but they are not all homes. A home is different than a house. This is definitely a real, well loved home which happens to be beautiful!

The explanation of this architect/designer is a clear indication that his/wife and two children is the desired home structure of a professional. I like that he kept some of the old designs with a modern twist. If I ever get enough money, I would like to hire this young architect to build my two children’s house because he uses biodegradable materials to construct. I’ll save this video because I hope to use his services in the future. May the Lord bless you and your whole family. And thank you home worthy’s.

Wow, this one tugged at my heartstrings! Having lived in SocCal for over 30 years, and living on the East Coast, this made me mourn for the old loveliness that California had, and still has, thanks to visionaries such as this who see the priceless value of saving these old homes. It took me back to days spent in Napa, San Dimas, and Arcadia. This has to be one of the homeliest videos you have done! ❤

What a thoughtful, creative architect and designer Patrick is. His use of natural materials and incorporation of the peaceful garden is so calming. Hard to believe all the wreckage of wasteful life he had to dig through to bring to life this vision he and his wife share for their family. The house and garden seem to actually breathe with serene life. Even with young children, it’s as if the house has been designed to protect them, while enjoying and exploring. I heard this theme again and again. What a marvelous dad and most user friendly designer! In so many ways, this house is ahead of its time, combining forward thinking resource management with a warmth one rarely sees in any style today. It’s as if this house, with all its gleaming woods and cushy leathers reaches out to embrace one in front of the crackling fire. I can’t believe how gushy that sounds. But that’s the vibe. I don’t know how else to describe it, but I do know one other place I felt all of the above qualities. I was fortunate to grow up with Frank Lloyd Wright homes just outside of Chicago. For all its differences, I’ve never viewed another house that has such a similar sensibility to FLW’s home and studio in Oak Park, IL. Right up to his children’s nursery. The use of every inch thought out, the beauty (of every kind) each moment of space contributes considered, the furniture, storage, built in vase and the gorgeous wood! Truly beyond a period to timeless.
p.s. Homeworthy thank you for this beautifully filmed and edited video. An inspiring treasure on so many levels.

LOL! I'm howling because when I was around 10 -12 years, I also used to dress up as 'Harriet The Spy,' and go into homes that were under construction on our 'new' street. I loved being in there by myself after all the workers had gone home for the day. I enjoyed the peace and quiet. It almost felt like the house was taking a rest too, from the effort of being built! I loved the smell of timber frames, and seeing all the various construction materials readied for use. I used to make jewelry from the bits of coloured wire and bits I found. I was always a bit sad when the houses were actually finished, and a new family moved in. It wasn't till years later that I told our neighbours I'd been in their houses long before they were, LOL!. Great video. Loved that they took their time, because you can really see form following function here! 🤩

Is a "ceramic vessel" the same as a plant pot? 5. Why do both banquettes not have any storage in a self-confessed small house ? 6. Is "monolithic" panelling better than minimalist panelling ? So many resources used for so few people. And then the cost of energy for upkeep 🤷‍♀️ not to mention the dusting 😂

This is a gorgeous home, in keeping with nature. It's very livable and looks very comfortable and warm. I love the garden and the house ties in beautifully with that. I could easily see that home in Monterey or Carmel. My only complaint...and this is about the camera work. When someone is describing something, how about showing what they're talking about instead of just focusing on the host. The transoms, for example. The host was pointing them out, but they weren't shown...except for a split second in one shot. Also, the tiles in the small bathroom. Again, he was speaking about them but we don't see them. You need to show the features, that are spoken about, in future videos. Thank you, and really lovely home.

Not everyone. I don't and I know a couple of other people who are television-free. You are right though as most people probably do have one.

What a joy to see a home done so beautifully without excess and pretension.

A wonderfully lived in, welcoming & homely home… I am so appreciating the recent variety of homes & interiors! So much more relatable & interesting… ❤ Not another butlers pantry in sight!👏

While you feature many beautiful homes, this is one I could very easily live in. Also nice to see a family living in a modestly sized home. Love the use of wood panelling, plus the large sliding windows in the kitchen/dining area. This was a 10 out of 10!
