Restoring a 1890’s Primordial Victorian home was a decade-long labor of love for architect Patrick Bernatz and his wife. Patrick sought to rediscover the California of his and his wife's childhood memories - resulting in an extensive renovation project that preserved the home's authenticity and charm.
A striking feature of this historic home is the custom-designed furniture crafted from locally sourced materials. The original flooring was carefully maintained, highlighting the home's historical roots. In the pursuit of authenticity, new additions to the structure were seamlessly integrated by drawing inspiration from typologies of sleeping porches and bungalows.
Throughout the house, a dedication to the preservation of historical elements is evident, with many materials, including salvaged or replicated moldings, seamlessly blending with the past. The garden, adorned with native plants, provides a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle, reflecting the couple's commitment to a more sustainable lifestyle. Patrick's hotel design background shines through, emphasizing eco-conscious design practices. His home is a living testament to history and a vision of a sustainable architectural future, where past and present beautifully coexist.

Much prefer this type of home to big flashy mansions! 🏴🏴🏴💙💙💙
You are so right!
Preach!
Same here!
Cozy and with personality? Yes please.
Same.
Finally an episode that isn’t a showcase glamorous home. This has got to be one of the most enjoyable episodes that Homeworthy has presented.
I respond to the whole esthetic. Sophisticated, vintage, mid-mod, purposeful and old California all speaking in a whisper.
this house gives us such a calming, relax and cozy atmosphere. I am so impressed with the interior design
This is an honest house which speaks “ home ‘ xxx
As a San Diegan, I loved watching this video of such a lovely home in nearby L.A. The host was great and showed a real appreciation for the natural elements of the home and the garden that make Southern California such an incredibly wonderful place to live. It's nice to celebrate a home that isn't about the biggest, grandest, and showiest, but one that has heart, integrity, and culture. Wish there were more homes and families like this in SoCal. Great video, thanks so much, Homeworthy!
Absolutely agree! All the houses showcased on Homeworthy are beautiful, but they are not all homes. A home is different than a house. This is definitely a real, well loved home which happens to be beautiful!
I also live in San Diego County and couldn't agree more!
@@debrahayes3778 Same here! Native San Diegan.
What a wonderful, talented and emotionally literate this man is! His wife, I am sure, is no less. They created a beautiful home and the family. Congratulations on your harmonious life.
I will watch this several times. This guy understands wood! Hard to adequately describe the house. Lovely patchwork, variety, patina, layers of history, nooks, alcoves. Simple but rich and cozy. Shockingly good.🙂🙂🙂🙂❤💯
A clear hearth under the parlor stove. I hope they do it. Wood floor can then flow. 😎
A simple home, but yet such a beautiful home at the same time.
Loved this, but I wish Homeworthy would pan the camera up and down when needed. It would have been great to actually see the skylight and the tiled floor that he was talking about rather than just having to imagine them.
How fortunate that they chose to save and improve this lovely home and property. What an amazing location. I love every square inch of this place. He is very talented and he and his wife have wonderful taste. Thank you for the tour, sir.
I loved everything about this episode. Was so refreshing to see the importance of using local material, repurposing and focusing on what truly made brought joy to this family….quality time spoke big time and the the love of using the outdoors
This house is furnished in a warm, down to earth way.❤
The explanation of this architect/designer is a clear indication that his/wife and two children is the desired home structure of a professional. I like that he kept some of the old designs with a modern twist. If I ever get enough money, I would like to hire this young architect to build my two children’s house because he uses biodegradable materials to construct. I’ll save this video because I hope to use his services in the future. May the Lord bless you and your whole family. And thank you home worthy’s.
Wow, this one tugged at my heartstrings! Having lived in SocCal for over 30 years, and living on the East Coast, this made me mourn for the old loveliness that California had, and still has, thanks to visionaries such as this who see the priceless value of saving these old homes. It took me back to days spent in Napa, San Dimas, and Arcadia. This has to be one of the homeliest videos you have done! ❤
I had relatives in Arcadia, CA, at one time.
Us: we need more videos per week
Homeworthy: yes
What a thoughtful, creative architect and designer Patrick is. His use of natural materials and incorporation of the peaceful garden is so calming. Hard to believe all the wreckage of wasteful life he had to dig through to bring to life this vision he and his wife share for their family. The house and garden seem to actually breathe with serene life. Even with young children, it’s as if the house has been designed to protect them, while enjoying and exploring. I heard this theme again and again. What a marvelous dad and most user friendly designer! In so many ways, this house is ahead of its time, combining forward thinking resource management with a warmth one rarely sees in any style today. It’s as if this house, with all its gleaming woods and cushy leathers reaches out to embrace one in front of the crackling fire. I can’t believe how gushy that sounds. But that’s the vibe. I don’t know how else to describe it, but I do know one other place I felt all of the above qualities. I was fortunate to grow up with Frank Lloyd Wright homes just outside of Chicago. For all its differences, I’ve never viewed another house that has such a similar sensibility to FLW’s home and studio in Oak Park, IL. Right up to his children’s nursery. The use of every inch thought out, the beauty (of every kind) each moment of space contributes considered, the furniture, storage, built in vase and the gorgeous wood! Truly beyond a period to timeless.
p.s. Homeworthy thank you for this beautifully filmed and edited video. An inspiring treasure on so many levels.
The vibe is vibing so relaxed 😌 chill calming 😊 they definitely got the assignment
Beautiful home. That kitchen view, wow! The gardens are spectacular! I’m jealous of that lime tree!
LOL! I'm howling because when I was around 10 -12 years, I also used to dress up as 'Harriet The Spy,' and go into homes that were under construction on our 'new' street. I loved being in there by myself after all the workers had gone home for the day. I enjoyed the peace and quiet. It almost felt like the house was taking a rest too, from the effort of being built! I loved the smell of timber frames, and seeing all the various construction materials readied for use. I used to make jewelry from the bits of coloured wire and bits I found. I was always a bit sad when the houses were actually finished, and a new family moved in. It wasn't till years later that I told our neighbours I'd been in their houses long before they were, LOL!. Great video. Loved that they took their time, because you can really see form following function here! 🤩
Such a beautiful moody cozy and warm home..very very talented home owner/designer.
Fabulous garden, home and host! Love to visit beautiful homes that aren’t pretentious and packed with so much junk!
Omg. A real home. Thoughtful, charming, unique, authentic, genuine. Love it.
The seating in the home reminds me of some thing that Frank Lloyd Wright would utilize. I also felt a sense of Frank Lloyd Wright in the kitchen.
I did, too!!
As a former LA resident, thank you for preserving the architecture and the landscape!
This renovation makes my heart happy. I love that this house was not torn down. Well done!
It’s a lovely house but he should turn on the lights to illuminate the beauty of it.
As an Angeleno, I truly appreciate people like this who thoughtfully and lovingly restore beautiful old homes here. I love this home!
My very very favorite home in all the Homeworthy episodes - utterly divine - cozy - not pretentious yet incredibly welcoming - thank you for sharing!
The shower tub with the door to the garden is amazing! How brilliant. In the heart of the city!
They did such a great job on this house! The wood in the kitchen is spectacular!
What a beautiful home! I love it.❤❤❤❤❤
Easy to listen to the host. Peaceful without music in the background.
What a loving family with really close and warm relationship they have 😍
Oh my goodness, I love his narration and how loved all their items are. I love that it's not trendy but still so perfectly curated.
I love that the owner is so knowledgeable with historical architectural details. I also admire that he has a wonderful collection of books. I can relate too, that as I came into
the world before the internet, reference material through books was my source of making sense and being connected to the world.
I love the bookshelf for collecting books from his school days for his son, and the French doors from his bedroom is everything. 👍
love this. inside, outside, everything.
This house is blessed to have found you both. Love what you have done to it.
Wow! This designer has a great laid back easy vibe! He’s definitely L.A!! I mean that as a very sincere compliment - having been raised in L.A. & mostly West L.A.! Patrick has a beautiful home that’s really appealing to all ages! His kids are lucky to have this home! Patrick & his wife definitely took many things into account - and their house is proof that trendy is not better! This house could easily be enjoyed & appreciated by people of all ages!!
He loves his home and I can't blame him. I loved this
I really was not expecting him to say my wife and I. The wrap around mahogany bench is a masterpiece.
A lovely well done home that’s relatable. Casual sophistication without agitating clutter and colors.
What a lovely man& it’s so nice to see a united happy family in a beautiful home 👍👏👏👏
I love the custom seating! Jealous of the climate and garden! Awesome family home! 👍🇨🇦😎❄❄❄
Truly enjoyed hearing the passion in this homeowner’s voice as he explained in great detail the renovation of this gorgeous family home and garden.
I freaking love this home. The interior, exterior and the garden is all created with hard work and such great taste.
Beautiful home! God bless this family!!🤗
Surprised how much I love this one. So tasteful and understated. I love the more minimalist homes.
Splendid! And terrific to include "before" pictures -- I wish more tours included those.
Таинственный и симпатичный дом, много благородного дерева, кухня необычная, а в окнах пальмы. Много зелени, как в дендрарии. Уютно и неординарное.
Loved this! Rich, warm modern craftsman home which speaks of California's history and vibe. What a nice person who clearly loves and enjoys his home, his family and life. Props to Homeworthy for this one.
A truly beloved home and garden! I admire how they have made elegant functional space in tight quarters. Really lovely.
Love the charming, character filled home.
The garden is fabulous.
The sunken bath with a big window design must surely make a comeback after that presentation ❤
The interior shutters are unexpected and unique. Haven’t seen those before ❤
This home is a dream. Love the little reading nook.
Every second word of his was “you know”
Nobody is perfect. He is not a speaker. He is a designer with excellent taste and wonderful family life!
sadly so many I couldn’t focus on the content… would be nice if they gave him a quick rehearsal and a bit of direction… otherwise excellent presentation
He's a normal, authentic person with a high level of style. I can't imagine what I would look and sound like if I had the courage to sit in front of a camera and explain every decision made in my own home to the world when it's also my business.
Was it? I didn't notice. Too busy appreciating this wonderful, well-educated, and cultured man and his love for his family and their home. If he's reading this, I hope he notices how many people felt the need to stand up for him due to a careless and insensitive comment, likely made by someone who has some issues they need to work on or is in a bad place in their life.
Thank you for the tour of this incredibly personal, hyper-local, soulful GEM! Incredibly inspiring.
Love your kitchen - it gets away from the stark girlie white kitchen and brings in warmth of wood and textures making it beautifully masculinely chic and sleek yet not over designed and so is very user friendly
Wonderfully chic and comfortable home.
Wonderful and well done!
Not sure what was more spectacular…house or garden?! And so close to downtown…wowsers. Thank you so much for renovating this gorgeous dwelling! Enjoy!
Loved, loved this home. Especially the table, bench and chairs in the kitchen. Full windows, plus the lower glass windows. Just such a special design feature.
Why do people apolige for having a tv. It is part of life!
From a designer's perspective, a TV isn't attractive. It also symbolizes the couch potato vibe. Having it hidden out of the way gives the home much more sophistication.
@@irismckay6472I’m a designer myself and I totally disagree! Stop dragging professional designers in general to have a common consensus. I design for my clients with functionality and elegance in mind. If you consider an innocent TV an obstacle, then you are not doing your job as an interior designer, or you simply don’t understand what interior design means.
@@irismckay6472 I agree.
Oh, this home! This might be my favorite of all time. Love all the thoughtful details, warm wood hues, use of indoor and outdoor spaces. It's really, really gorgeous.
Beautiful organic space. I always liked traditional homes and designs but if modern interiors looked like this I could be a convert!
Fabulous - a ‘real’ home made with passion, thought, love and sensitivity to the surroundings. Love it.
1. So many "moments" to share. 2. "fighting for inches" I really know what you mean, an extra inch can mean a lot to most people 📏. 3. Is "ceramic ware" the same as bowls, plates and cups? 4. Is a "ceramic vessel" the same as a plant pot? 5. Why do both banquettes not have any storage in a self-confessed small house ? 6. Is "monolithic" panelling better than minimalist panelling ? Thanks for sharing ! 👍
You certainly had an 👁️ for what it would be -- and wow it’s fabulous --luv the colour scheme throughout- also great that you love books and encourage your kids to read - how special. Happy days 😊
That kitchen/dining space to die for . So warm and cosy. Love love love.
Loved this home tour - what a gorgeous space - inside and out!.. One observation/ comment : there were a couple of times towards the end of the video where Patrick is talking about features- in the corridor re light filtering window panels and spanish tiles in the bathroom where the camera person should have panned to the feature but kept the camera on Patrick ...would've loved to see the details..
A beautiful big home ❤
Nice departure from typical bigger and more is better homes shown on You Tube. Beautiful lovely home. Silverlake?
It's a really lovely house, you know?😋
😅
Lovely house and lovely man!! ❤
Absolutely, a sense of FLW, so serene warm and lovely on the eyes. Thank you for transforming this gem.
I love this house thanks for sharing this one.
Fabulous home .so natural and unpretentious and individual . Would be easy to feel ‘at home ‘ here ! Well done 🎉
LOVE that low wrap-around bench! Looks like a great spot to relax without blocking the wonderful natural views!
Beautiful home love the organic feel!
This is not my taste. I like old creaky houses best but this guys attention to detail is genius level. Everything is so practical and functional. I totally appreciate the concept.🏆🎯💯🙌❤️💋😻
I know this house! Been curious about the inside. We owned a 100 year old Tudor in the area for 35 years and feel very connected to their journey in bringing a vintage home back to its glory.
I live in the neighborhood too. There's not many Tudor style houses in the area, lucky you!
Lots of lessons in this one. Really get to know a space and how you live before making changes. As much as I love looking at those pretty mansions I do wonder why do they need so much space? So many resources used for so few people. And then the cost of energy for upkeep 🤷♀️ not to mention the dusting 😂
This is a gorgeous home, in keeping with nature. It's very livable and looks very comfortable and warm. I love the garden and the house ties in beautifully with that. I could easily see that home in Monterey or Carmel. My only complaint...and this is about the camera work. When someone is describing something, how about showing what they're talking about instead of just focusing on the host. The transoms, for example. The host was pointing them out, but they weren't shown...except for a split second in one shot. Also, the tiles in the small bathroom. Again, he was speaking about them but we don't see them. You need to show the features, that are spoken about, in future videos. Thank you, and really lovely home.
It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. Love the transformation.
A proper home. So relaxed and family focused. Love it.
Spectacular! What a transformation! 😮 Love the original floors!!
His wife is going to be in for a BIG surprise sometime down the road.
Definitely one of my favorite episodes!!! Love the home and his love of his family when he speaks! ❤
Gorgeous home! Well done.
I like how you lived in your home for a long time before renovating it.
This home is a dream! So well thought out for their casual, family lifestyle. I wish homeowners wouldn’t apologize for having a tv. It is what it is. We all have the ugly black box.
Not everyone. I don't and I know a couple of other people who are television-free. You are right though as most people probably do have one.
What a joy to see a home done so beautifully without excess and pretension.
Love this home❤
0:26 to 0:30 never gets old 💚
A wonderfully lived in, welcoming & homely home… I am so appreciating the recent variety of homes & interiors! So much more relatable & interesting… ❤ Not another butlers pantry in sight!👏
Une maison avec de belles énergies 😊🎉
While you feature many beautiful homes, this is one I could very easily live in. Also nice to see a family living in a modestly sized home. Love the use of wood panelling, plus the large sliding windows in the kitchen/dining area. This was a 10 out of 10!
A truly beautiful home. Very calm. Love the style and details. Great taste and colours. Aspirational.
FABULOUS AMERICAN CHICK, artistic and calming , so jealous
The best tour ever!!!
