    Today, you will learn to tie the Pratt knot AKA the Shelby knot.
    HISTORY:
    - The knot was first worn in the US during World War II
    - an American named Jerry Pratt started wearing it exclusively in the late 50s.
    - never really became popular until a man showed the knot in 1986 to the local news anchor Don Shelby.
    - Three years afterwards, in 1989, Europe times picked up on it and the daily telegraph in England renamed it the Shelby knot.
    HOW TO TIE THE PRATT KNOT:
    1. Start out with the tie seam side up and the slimmer end on your right and the wider end on your left. The length of the slimmer end is about one and a half hand width above your waistband. Slim end goes over the wide end.
    2. Take the bottom part, the wide end goes up, you always stay on the right and through a hole pulling it down.
    3. Now you have this little knot and you want it to be tight. Take the wide end, bring it to your left, tighten it up a little bit and now from the back, you bring the wide end up, pull it up. Now the wide end goes through the knot and now you just pull it through, adjust it and pull it up.
    4. You can see it forms a dimple automatically because you have that knot just on one side. Pull at the slim end, bring it up and adjust your knot. Voila! The Pratt AKA Shelby knot.
    - This kind of a big knot only works with cutaway collars or really wide spread collars.
    - Avoid wearing this with a classic collar because the collar ends will overlap with your knot which does not look very good.
    - You definitely do not want to wear this kind of tie with a collar pin or collar bar, much rather go for an oriental or four in hand knot because this is simply too big.

    This knot is slick, I'm loving the shape. I'll definitely keep it in mind next time I wear a wide enough collar. Very much appreciated.

    I’m so happy the Gentleman’s Gazette. I’ve learned so much on how to take pride in my appearance and style. Not to mention a brush on on how to carry myself as a gentleman. Thank you for what you do.

    The size of the knot depends on the tie material thickness. I have some thinner ties that produce a rather small Pratt knot; as well as thicker ones that result in larger knots.

    For some reason i like when the collar overlaps the knot a little. Thats why i prefer the windson/half windsor (depending on tie) cause i like big knots.

    Defo my favourite knot! I have a knot toe that's a bit chunkier and initially didn't think it would suit this kind of knot but I just love it!

    Now I know for sure what type of collar I need for this knot. Especially since I'm planning to purchase that particular tie very soon. I'm almost curious to see what a Full Windsor knot would look like with a tie that thick.

    Is it just me or this is basically a reversed half-windsor?

    thanks very much for this video! as a bigger guy with a larger neck, i usually can't afford large knots like the windsor or half windsor. this tie knot is perfect for me b/c while it doesn't use much of the tie length, it still provides a fairly large, symmetrical knot.
    also want to let you know that this video for some reason is not included in your "all about ties" playlist, so it took a little bit of searching to find ;)

    Wing collars look horrible on anyone. The full windsor knot should be used for thin material ties. The half windsor should be used for thick material ties. Thats all you need to know about ties. :)

    Great vid!
    When does someone come up with THE OFFICIAL starting hand?
    Some say the wide end starts on your right
    Others say the wide end starts on your left
    Or does it not matter?

    I wear this one with my dress shirt for more formal occassions because of the rather spread collar.

    •  5 років тому

      4-in-hand, Oriental, maybe even the half-Windsor... if you’re feeling edgy, perhaps the Nicky? You’ve got options.

    Sir which is the perfect tie knot which goes in every occasion, with every collar & every tie? Half Windsor or Pratt knot?

    • @GustavGriswold
      @GustavGriswold 9 років тому +2

      Mandeep Baweja Without being Rafael himself, I would say the closet thing to something that works for every tie is either a half windsor, or you could imitate Prince Charles and wear a four-in-hand, even with a widely spread collar, it's a different look, but - in my opinion - not a bad one. However, it's usually better to learn different tie knots, and use different knots for different ties/shirts.

    • @gentlemansgazette
      @gentlemansgazette  9 років тому

      Mandeep Baweja Gustav Griswold Half Windsors are not suited to classic collars without tie space. A medium sized knot is best, stay tuned for our full series.
