As I said in my other comment, if you're willing to put the effort in on Android, compute can get you much closer still. Being able to change every parameter of the entire google camera pipeline makes for incredible-looking images even on old phones. You once did the video on a custom gcam on oneplus, but getting a custom library (that's the processing parameters) if like twice as powerful at least
This is not intended to bash or praise either Apple or Android. This is simply to give Android users the same paths talked about here. I'm typing this on my Pixel 8 Pro and followed along with the video. 2:12 Android always remembers your settings. 2:27 I don't have Photographic Styles. 3:03 I turned on my grid, level, and mirrored the front camera. The setting for mirroring on Android is "save selfie as previewed". I tuned that off. 3:30 I don't have "prioritize faster shooting" but I do have a setting that lets me pick between 12 and 50mp. I just always leave it on 50mp regardless. And when 50mp is enabled over 12mp, burst is greyed out. 3:48 Again, I don't have Photographic Styles and I'm not sure what the equivalent would be. Maybe the filters in the Android camera are the same thing but those are after you've shot a photo so not really. There are in-viewfinder shadow and white balance sliders you can adjust before taking a photo if you tap the sliders icon beside the shutter button. But, again, I'm not sure if that's the same thing. So I'm going to skip the whole Photographic Styles path. 5:01 Intense path: I already had Lightroom mobile installed and subscribed to it. 5:24 For formats, in the pro settings, you can pick just JPEG or JPEG and RAW. So, I turned on both. So when I take a picture, I get the JPEG file and the RAW file. RAW is not ProRAW, keep in mind. If I remember correctly, ProRAW is Apple's proprietary version of the RAW format. Everyone else uses RAW format. The point is, I now have JPEG and RAW files to work with. 5:52 No, I'm mostly in Android and Windows. So, I'm skipping the yes path here. 6:37 There's no JPEG-XL setting on Android so skipping that. 7:05 Yes, I shoot video. So, let's do this path. The 8 Pro can do 4k60fps so that is now enabled. 7:19 Keep in mind that turning on 60fps disables the HDR settings so if you want HDR, leave it on 30fps. I don't like the look of HDR and I would rather get 60fps videos so I turned on 60fps. This is a personal choice thing and I'm pretty sure the Pixel 9 can do 4k120 with HDR. I am generation behind. That's why I have to pick one or the other. 7:44 Intense video path: There isn't a ProRes setting on Android because that's an Apple thing but you can pick between H.265/HVAC and H.265/AVC. HVAC is a smaller file but may not be compatible with some stuff. I use AVC because stoage isn't a concern. I'd rather have compatibility. 9:53 You can adjust the shadows, white balance, saturation, ISO, ect before taking a picture by hitting the sliders icon beside the shutter button on Android. There aren't any "styles" presets which is what Photographic Styles sounds like, but you can adjust these settings in the Android camera before taking a photo. Then, after taking the photo, Google Photos gives you *all kinds* of adjustments you can make including filters and adjusting the look of said filters. That's it, I think. Right? Even last year's Pixel can do most of what they're talking about here. Don't think you have to have the latest iPhone to do this stuff.
Can't explain how much I appreciate this. I was just wondering if someone could create this, thank you! Edit: samsung has a feature called intelligent optimisation that, if set to maximum, can prioritise quality over speed.
I really appreciate the easy vs hard pathways on the flow chart. Too many other videos on UA-cam saying, "if you're not shooting in ProRAW you're an idiot!" and that's just not true for some people.
David is an extremely talented photographer. I would love to watch a video of him taking photos on an iPhone and then explaining what he does in post + reasons for a specific shot. Like “this is the portrait/landscape/etc I took and here’s what I’ve done to it and why” So many of us would love to take beautiful pictures but lack talent. And David is a great explainer when it comes to photography. Please, consider!
Hell yes. I just upgraded to the 16 pro but felt like I needed to actually learn how to take photos with it instead of the usual autopilot. Great content
HDR (Dolby Vision) has nothing to do with protecting highlights. It's a format that displays higher nit values on your screen. You might be mistaken with HDR photography which is exposure bracketing. Two very different things. Source: I'm a pro film colorist.
I can see the studio channel videos getting better and better thumbs up 👍 for that and we need more videos like this. Whatever you guys are doing you’re doing it right
That conclusion about pixel peeping is right - I've already taken plenty of photos and videos for work with the iPhone 16 Pro, and it's near-as-dammit good as a solid mirrorless cam unless you're looking very closely.
David will say "I'll know when you shot with a phone" then proceeds to post the most fire photos ever made with an iphone on threads. Love you guys, this vid was incredible.
If you look closely on the x5 one, 2nd and 3rd have EXACTLY the same size in the sign. That’s bc both Samsung and iPhone have x5 lenses (which they shot in), versus the R5 who is slightly less zoomed in (they did it manually, not a x5 button)
This is an awesome video and I specifically liked the camera settings portion of it. Would want to see this kind of a video for the upcoming Samsung S25 line up and may be a pixel one too. Also, would like to see this kind of a video as part of a series of videos wherein you, the experts, take us, the noobs through various settings not only for the auto settings but also manual shooting options wherein you can adjust a lot of input data.
Excellent video new guys!😁 Nice to see that a quality large sensor camera can still produce better photos than a phone--THOUGH ONLY MARGINALLY these days. And only astute, camera-educated people can even see the difference. Kudos to both full-frame photography and tiny-sensor smart phone photography! They are both wonderful tools and each has its place.
I think you keep preserve photographic style as you can get more functionality setting the default in the camera app and you can more easily change that when shooting. Has been working well for me.
I thought I was the target viewer for this video at first, I am a HUGE iPhone photographer. It’s one of the main reasons I carry my 13 mini around with me. And interestingly enough, one of your first points I really disagree with. Photographic styles is the feature I use most as I will do ANYTHING but post processing. It’s also like the only way to get somewhat more realistic colours because Apple’s default colour profile does not work with all colours (there never is a one size fits all) but I guess it might be just me because I never edit in post, only whenever I’m shooting. That’s why I’ll probably upgrade to the 16 pro thanks for all the new photographic styles and settings. Great vid anyways, thanks for the work!
Anything where most of or the whole frame is in focus, like a landscape shot, becomes really hard to tell if it's shot on phone or not. At least if it's processed correctly. All of these shots having some sort of clear subject totally gives it away though. But like if I shoot my 35mm lens at f8 and take a picture of a landscape, it vs a phone is super close.
Photographic style is stored as a layer under the hood so you are always able to revert back to the default style later on with full raw info still available
BLIND CAMERA TEST PLEASE!!!! Let's make them do it guys. We also want you to film the most high-end MKBHD video you can with the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Then we want another one where you use the 3rd part lenses and see what cool shots you can get with those.
Loved this video, great first full video Eric and Rich, can't wait to see what else, either on screen or off screen you both will do for The Studio! Wish Eric would pronounce ecosystem right tho (jk jk)
You mentioned you did the test with a Samsung S24 Ultra, do you plan to have a video on that phone like you just did for the iPhone? The Samsung phone always does better every year in your own camera test.
I have a problem (and I'm not the only one) with Lightroom and the 16 Pro. I'm watching this on my A03 Core because my iPhone 8 Plus's battery hasn't been replaced yet, lol. I'm purely here for the entertainment, knowing I'll just do 4K 60fps everything - not to spite Marques, but because I love using 60fps in my personal (and very VERY soon, UA-cam) videos! When I inevitably upgrade my iPhone, I'll go to 4K 120fps! Edit: My iPhone 8 Plus is on 76% battery health, for reference. I just got a lightning charger, so now I can actually put it to use when the battery is replaced!
I’m loving the more frequent upload schedule!
We've used up both our monthly videos! 😝🗣🗣🗣
Like seriously
So long as it doesn’t sacrifice the quality of the videos as a whole (content+production).
Quality over quantity

“Echo system”
Same energy as Marques pronouncing “niche”.
It’s giving homeschooled
wdym@@AlexPrevost
I noticed, that too. LOL, It is so true.
It's because Apple is keeping their users in an echo chamber hahaha
As someone who knows nothing about photography and cameras, I love watching David and Marques geek out and explain their thought processes.
I could watch David geek about Cameras all day long.
First video from the new guys and we love it..
This was informative but yeah of course storage is gonna burn really fast...
Gotta hand it to The Studio for putting out such quality content that would greatly help upcoming creators. You guys rock!

That's great, you should make a video about it 👍🏼
But, the iPhone does it better than ANY Android.
This channel has been cooking lately !!

I just switch to iPhone, your video is a lifesaver! I was going crazy at work with exporting the images to windows and other non-apple platforms!
haha I can't believe they used David's confetti sound imitation 6:46
I think it’s an iMovie default
@@Lincoln_Online nope that sound came from David's mouth hahaha
Yeah, I could hear Andrew’s laugh after it too 😆
@@ellisrovin 😹 btw how did you get your job, I’m a aspiring producer and sound engineer and I would love some tips
the workflow at 1:39 😭🔥
The studio channel is setting a bar high day by day ( just like the main channel). So much to learn from production perspective in every video. Thanks
For Vinh's part they have got Tyler Stalman on the iMac as its colour grading. Haha well played!
Dang it! I was about to comment on that.
Vinh only appearing with warm lighting is perfect.
Banger after banger video on this channel recently, great work yall!

This is the type of content I really enjoy. Simple and easy to follow, information made easy to receive. Love it!
You should add the R5 to the smartphone camera test for statistical data
so we can all see how a unheard smartphone from Vietnam for 99USD beats that one too ! :D
Love this!! Keep this type of content coming!
More of this please! Make David guess between real film photos and those from apps with emulations!
0:42 - Knowing Ellis, I bet he loved recording the keyboard folly himself for that text animation.
Im not sure if this is what stress testing means... LOL
They surely were stressing

@Huttersvuur I use h.265 and post to instagram without any color grading. Should I turn on HDR or leave it off? And plz explain why, thanks
I can see the studio channel videos getting better and better thumbs up 👍 for that and we need more videos like this.

I like the photographic styles this year. I have it set so that it doesn’t lighten the shadows so much, and I turned up the saturation a little.
Studio channel has stepped up of late. I'm loving it. If the main channel doesn't start uploading more Studio might become my favoured one.
Thanks so much for sharing this and i definitely can tell the differences between them. So MKB and David Awesome Video. 💯✌️
Casual content creator here, and I'm loving the turn toward educational content on this channel!
From "Why Marques Brownlee is the spier man" to being a studio producer, we witnessed Eric grow!
