      The state of her blue sword is a symbolic representation of the state of Mizu's soul. She needs to reforge herself anew before reforging her sword. With this in mind, her quest is not just about revenge. It also becomes a quest of self discovery. I think when she reconciles both sides of her heritage (the pure and impure metal) she will be able to reforge her soul.

    I believe Skeffington could be a businessman, and Routely might serve as a politician in the British Republic. Fowler portrays both of them as morally questionable, likely due to their involvement in actions causing both direct and indirect harm in their respective roles. It would be intriguing to explore whether either Skeffington or Routely have knightly ancestry, and it could be quite thrilling for Mizu, a ronin, to engage in a duel with someone possessing combat skills and chivalry reminiscent of a medieval knight.
    Upon Mizu's arrival in London, a series of significant events is expected to unfold. In 1660, England underwent the restoration of the monarchy, heralding the return of Charles II as king (1660-1685) after the period of Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth. This historical shift also led to the reintegration of bishops into Parliament and the establishment of a strict Anglican orthodoxy. Following the monarchy's restoration, England witnessed several notable developments in the subsequent years, including the outbreak of the Great Plague, the eruption of the Second Dutch War, and the devastating Great Fire of London.

    • @GPBA89
      @GPBA89 8 місяців тому +40

      Now that you mention it, the first season took place in 1657, which is during the last three years of the Interregnum when Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth ruled England. Because it will take time to reach England from Japan, Mizu could arrive when the Interregnum starts to end and might become involved in the restoration of the English monarchy. If she were to side with the royalists, a warrior of her caliber could be used to great effect. If it comes to that, she could earn Charles II's favor and gain knighthood. Wouldn't that be cool if she became both a samurai and a knight?

    London is going to be interesting for Mizu. Especially 1650’s London.
    This was a time in which the English still had that unique kind of European racism, where it’s not just white people who are superior, but English people in particular.
    It’s also difficult to say if Mizu will still need to hide her gender or race. Honestly, a mixed race Asian person could probably still pass as white given the right circumstances. Some white people just got really dark hair.
    As for her gender, I don’t know if she’ll be able to pass as a man for long in London. It’s obviously possible. She could just come across as very young or something. At the same time though, she doesn’t really know the gender roles in Europe, and especially in England where (compared to Japan at least) women had considerably more freedom. Obviously not a ton, but you get the point.
    If her race or gender is revealed, naturally, the other will get revealed as well. She will immediately become an oddity in England. One that many a showman will seek to commodify. Which might be a blessing and a curse. On one hand, she has access to literally anywhere she wants because she sort of becomes like a celebrity. On the other, the benefits of being perceived as a man or English, will be lost to her.

      At this time exotic peoples were a rage in England. It isn't too far removed from the first colonies sending Natives to England to be observed. Though I imagine the biggest issue in the 17th century will be the religious wars. Europe is tearing itself apart in the middle of the 17th century with Protestant vs Catholic. And England itself just finished a Civil War only a decade ago. Depending on when she arrives is whether it's run by Puritans and Cromwell, or the Restoration and Charles II. So, either extremely boring, or party time.

      I agree with you there, even though I am American (though I did my study abroad in Berlin and it's been my favorite European city ever since, so I feel you there too lol). Since the Dutch were the only Europeans allowed to trade with Japan in the 1600's (secretly, and with huge restrictions) it would've made more sense for the Europeans at those trading posts to be Dutch or even German (since most of Germany's Protestant states were allied with the Netherlands), and for Mizu to head to Amsterdam instead of London? I guess the writers just felt they had to go with Britain as Mizu's next destination, once they'd written Fowler as Irish (Ireland having been conquered by England during the 1500's). An English antagonist could still have been a realistic option if it was a visitor who crossed over from the Netherlands (which England was allied to/had extensive trade with for much of the 1600's), but the English actually chose to stop trading with Japan BEFORE the Shogun closed Japan off, because they weren't making any profit.
      Fowler being an Irishman would have made more a bit more sense if he was allied with Portugal or Spain, Catholic powers that largely opposed Protestant Britain and its' conquest of Catholic Ireland, and which Japan felt increasingly threatened by in the late 1500's early 1600's- though I guess it's never officially stated if Fowler is Catholic or Protestant. I liked Fowler as an antagonist, but his backstory was a bit harder to swallow. Still, always pleased to see an Irish character.
      All the same, I cant wait for a possible Season 2 XD.

      Wasn't Berlin and the rest of the Holy Roman Empire still wrecked by the Thirty Years War in the 1650's? That conflict did end in 1648 and I am not sure, but I gather Germany took much longer than a few years to recover.

    • @alexwyman7048

      Yeah, Brandenburg-Prussia (of which Berlin was the capital) was only just emerging as a significant German state in the mid-1600's and didn't become a major power until the 1700's under Frederick the Great. In this time period, it would have been especially devastated by the aftermath of the 30 years war and the plague. German protestants were still often allied with the Dutch Republic though, so Germany isn't out of the realm of possibility.

      It'd be interesting to see a different personality in an Irish character, after Fowler. Beyond his overdone personality, his character was a bit of a slap in the face to me, but one I very much needed (since I'm very attached to my own Irish ancestry and tend to have an overly-romanticized view of the Irish in history) and his development in the latter episodes was fascinating. Seeing an Irishman who has chosen a very different path toward dealing with the kind of oppression Fowler already clawed his way out of, would have tremendous impact on Mizu's worldview...

    all this talk about Taigen getting together with Mizu - remember Taigen developed feelings/hard on for Mizu all this time thinking MIzu's a dude. There is a lot of complexity in there and I wonder how the writers are going to handle that part, assuming there are future series (and there better be). I bet once Taigen finds out Mizu's a chic, he'll prolly give up swords fighting and retire from the series as a lost soul.

      That's if his pride doesn't get stung again, they way Mikio's was when Mizu kicked his ass. The fact that he's made peace with Mizu being a superior fighter than him is encouraging at least, though. Lotta ways Taigen's character could play out, I'm content to wait and see.

    • @alexwyman7048
      @alexwyman7048 8 місяців тому +29

      Think that's still a Japanese ship, even if it's bigger than the other ones shown. The Tokugawa shogunate started constructing larger ships with a more western influence in the early 1600's, when they still had slightly more open trade with not just the Dutch but the English- and Ieyasu, the first shogun, had an english advisor, William Adams.
      That was one nitpick I had about Fowler's plan, much as I loved the finale: there is NO way the shogunate would be stupid enough, not to already have guns of their own. Thanks to their prior trade with the Portuguese in the 1500's and eventually, producing their own, by the end of the "Warring States Period" in 1600, Japan had more firearms than any country in the world. Even after the sword-hunt and other weapon-regulation edicts, the Shogun still equipped multiple companies of his own military with guns (if you're ruling a feudal country by military decree, who in their right mind wouldn't?) right up to the 1800's.
      Even if the Japanese guns were more outdated than the flintlock muskets Fowler smuggled in, his plan to simply march one long column of riflemen into Edo at a walking pace, storming the fortified gates one by one from a single direction? Absurd, even if the shogunate DIDN'T have guns of their own in the castle. Having men on the inside to open the gates makes the threat real, yes, and the way Fowler smuggled the guns into the country was genius. But for someone who always had a strategy up his sleeve, his battle plan was suicide. No wonder his forces fell apart as soon as their commanders were gone.
      Sorry, didn't mean to rant or spoil (much). I've loved every episode of this series, the military historian in me just got annoyed by that scene.
