Yes you can! I just use the photo reference for color direction. I don't see any need for underpainting. Although, I need an under drawing to be sure of my likenesses.
No. Every single part of this is cut or torn paper. I cut those little pieces of black paper and glued them each on using tweezers to place them just where I wanted. It is all made of old magazine photos, old wall calendars, catalogs, or circulars. I enjoyed cutting them and placing them even though it took a lot of time to do it. Thanks for asking.

Did you draw on the fur around the ears, and if so, did you use marker or paint?
