Beautiful job on a very stylish car. In 1961 I had just moved to another "new" neighborhood (we moved every few weeks). This time I'd be there for FOUR YEARS (thru the end of high school). Good news - across the street was not only a "kid" my age, but his dad had a 1959 Imperial (salmon / white) - SPACE SHIP in real life. We started high school together and that fall his dad got a NEW 1962 Chrysler. First his dad had "invented" the portable spar tree (it cost thousands of loggers their jobs) and was given the Imperial. Then he invented the first fully automated fish machine that displaced thousands more and got him the new '62 Chrysler. What a time - Thank you for sharing... P.S. I warned you I had a lot of car stories - I've owned / operated over 50, my dad owned over 100 (all personal cars, most would drive, a couple "new ones" every month, some times).
BEAUTIFUL!! By the way, ever thought of taking a video, or stills of where you keep all these kits that you build? Be interesting to show the collection.. or parts of it :)
He goes from a WWI airplane straight to a 59 Imperial. This is why I subscribed. Great subject. Great build. Great color. Another grand slam. My day is complete. Thank you. Whatever will be next? Stay tuned.
Beautiful car ! I have never heard of a "curbside" model kits until now. I have been building models since I was 14 years old and I'll be 46 years old next month. I would definitely buy this kit, but I think it would be a great kit for a beginner. I love all of the American cars of the 50's. Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Pontiac, and Cadillac. I love them all ! Keep up the good work Chris ! Looking forward to seeing more !
I left the top and convertible boot unglued so they can be switched out. Had to carefully cut the window glass for the front and fashioned very thin sun visors out of adhesive vinyl. Sweet!
It turned out fantastic; I must admit, before seeing final assembly, I was really wondering about the look of the roof. Only one little thing I'd have preferred different is the interior floor carpet. White carpet even in an Imperial just seems a bit odd. I have this kit, unopened. Did not realize it is curbside. Hope I can get it somewhat close to how yours looks. Great color choice!
Thanks for sharing this build. It'a a real throw back to the days when kits were simpler and you could do a reasonably good job of assembly in a day or two. This would be a GREAT kit for club group builds to see what people could come up with...
I have the Model King reissue of this kit from years ago and it's great to see it back with EXCELLENT box art! I'd like another one, but I'd backdate mine to a '58 which I think looked a little better with the front end. I have a very beat up '58 promo which fortunately has good bumpers and interior and I'd like to tweak AMT's '57 300C chassis which was very similar to the Imperial's except in length. An engine would be an issue though as there's not been a correct '59 Mopar engine kitted AFAIK. VERY NICE review and your model turned out GREAT for a quick build!
The body color is very similar to Aqua Mist which is an authentic 1959 Chrysler paint color. The white forward painted roof was standard with Aqua Mist but there was an optional Silvercrest stainless steel insert that covered that area. Just painting it silver rather than leaving it white would really make this model pop. Also, a black instrument panel and black carpeting on the floor and lower door cards was how they were originally built with white leather seats.
Great job, I didn't realize the Landau roof had chrome trim, my mom's 77 Monte Carlo had a Landau roof and the trim between color and "leather" was like a textured plastic. I imagine in 59, the elegance of the vehicle mattered more...great job.
Dang it! I hate curbside, but Iove your build, Chris! Once again, I feel compelled to purchase one of your reviewed model kits. With a kit this simple, it is simple to devote a single weekend to rediscover the fun I had when building model cars 50-60 years ago. Yes, I guess that makes me old. Your choice of colors runs very close to my own. That might not be a good reflection on your color selection talents because I am blue/green colorblind. Very attractive car model! Very nice review. Thanks for another fun review!
Dude! I have been eyeballing that kit too. I do cars that you would see in a scifi B movie from the black & white era. This car screams B movie. Nice white walls. Gad I love that body. Keep the interesting videos coming. Fun fun fun.
You have done it again Chris, a great looking model. Your kit reviews/builds are all ways informative and entertaining. Why because in Australia these kits are experience and your kit reviews/builds helps me and others decide wether a certain kit is worth the money.
This curbside kit reminds me of AMT's 1:32 scale kits.No suspension,no engine except for the molded on engine detail, and the seats molded into the interior tub.If and when AMT re-releases the International 9800 Eagle COE from their ERTL series in 1:32 scale, you should do a build review on it.
Beautiful color - perfect for this car!!! Jay Leno has a real ‘58 Imperial that he actually had the 4 wheel drum brakes converted to 4 wheel high performance vented disc!! Imagine Willwoods on this thing lol
Great looking. You make model building look so easy. I have a couple dozen unbuilt kits that I have accumulated but never had the guts to try and build out. Watching your video and others makes me want to start. The only detail I can see missing on this Imperial is the rear view mirror on the dash. Wonder if it was forgotten when they made the kit?

I also now will find it far Easier to Modify one of these into 81-93 next Style Body Pickup that no 1/24 or 1/25 th kit was ever Made of too I should buy a Case of these to build !!
Wow gorgeous kit and build. And thanks for the tips about the sharpie's and pencils. Never knew how easy it is compared to that hideous foil or trying to paint chrome !!!
I have a couple of promotional models, a 72 Camaro SS396 and a 63 Ford Galaxy. The Galaxy was a kit, just like this one, the Camaro was a prepainted assembled model in the tradition of the usual promo model. I also have a Franklin Mint 1/25 scale Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz diecast model that I still have to find a case for. A regular model car case is too small!
What type of Rustoleum paint are you using? The '59 Imperial was the first AMT model I ever built as a kid and I'm planning to build it again now that it has been reissued,. I'd like to try using the Rustoleum paint rather than Testors or some other brand. Nice job by the way.
Hello! Thanks for the nice words. All paints used were listed in the video. I do so many builds I can't recall the name of the color at this moment but it's either shown in the video using the can I used or listed in the painting section. Thanks again!
I don't know if anybody else does this but whenever I have a chrome headlight I take some clear white pearl paint and fill it in . I think that looks more a.ccurate then painting sll Chrome.
Hi! Good review, as usual, but I was hesitant to buy this one, due to the lack of a motor. I sort of feel that the cost should be less due to that issues...I have been modelling since I was a boy, back to the mid 60's and I do NOT ever recall seeing this kit....now, I wonder if this isn't possibly a "saved" Jo-Han kit...that AMT sourced. I do remember a friend had a Jo-Han 59 Chrysler, a Windsor hardtop.....very similar in layout....that is, one piece frame, etc. Jo-Han used to make those dealer models that you got when a car purchase was made at a dealership...wonder if this is one based on that premise... Any idea to the true history of this one?
@@hpiguy I recently built an original SMP 1960 Imperial and it's exactly like that, except it didn't include a top. I've got to have this one. Nice job by the way!
A beautiful kit. The only thing showing its age are the screws and that it's simple. That's it. Molds seems to have been well taken care of or have barely even been used. I like this kit actually. I'd normally frown on a kit that old, mostly cuz molds get damaged over time and because they're too simple. But well, this one is an exception I guess. Just wondering tho, is it my eyes, or was there a small gap between the trunk and the spare tire cover?
Chris, just saw your new video showing all the new models like the Kenworth cement mixer and the C900 Ford truck and trailer....cant wait for the build on those including the Sherman Fury! How can i get on your FB page? I tried Hpiguys workshop but it yielded no results
I have a question for you. I am using Rust-oleum 2x white primer and 2x gloss red and gloss blue and I am having reaction to the paint on some of the parts. The paint is cracking. But not on all the parts. Am I doing something wrong?
Make sure you're using the same brand paints with all that you're painting. Some paints don't play nice with others and that could be part of the problem with compatibility. It wouldn't hurt to test it out on a junk body as well to ward off any surprises on any project you're working on.
Chrysler Corp used pretty much the same chassis setup with all the divisions back in those days. Yes, the wheelbase is longer by a few inches, but it’s not hard to stretch that at all since the frame is a separate piece in the ‘57 300 kit for instance. The bigger problem might be the engine. At the moment I can’t think of a suitable engine that would work for a ‘59 imperial. Perhaps one of the early ‘60’s Johan Mopar kits would work......if you can find one that’s parted out.
Hello from Finland. And thank You for yet another informative video. Could You please consider doing a resin model too? I have a couple kits but I'm not really sure that I'm ready for building one yet. Building resin models adds some challenges concerning building and painting Rocking regards Janne
Great model and great build. Good color choices. Enjoyable video as usual. Appreciate back story on actual car. Helps when deciding how to build. Thanks again.
Hey brother, you do amazing work....from construction vehicles to big rigs and cars, your work....especially the relicing and distressing....is impeccable! I do have to ask you....on the 59 Imperial....how did you manage to do the absolutely too tiny raised letters on the hood and front fenders? I use a lighted magnifier on a headband and STILL cant see it enough to attempt either paint or a very light scrape job! Whats your secret?
Greetings from the Dominican Republic, I have a question. What paint do you use to give that black and silver touch to the front specifically on the grill?
I tried Rustoleum years ago as an undercoat and if I recall it crased the plastic. Am I mistaken about this or do they make a paint compatible with styrene?
Old school Rustoleum may not be plastic safe. I use their newer 2X brand and it says plastic safe. But I also use a primer on everything, rarely do I shoot top coats on bare plastic.
@@hpiguy thanks, I'll look for it. I've been using Wal-Mart's generic spray, it's called Color Place for undercaots. Their flats go on super smooth and the semi-gloss black is perfect for interiors, vinyl roofs, and hoses.
Have you seen them to new Mobius kits on pre-order. They are the mid 1960's Ford pickup and Ford pickup utility bed. If so are you going get them and do builds. Please do.
Do you do commissions? I am wanting a 1966 Ford Thunderbird Convertible done like the Thelma and Louise car for an upcoming signing Susan and Geena are doing. I cant find a diecast model car in 1:25 scale ANYWHERE
I spent $10 on a molotaw silver pen and the tip would absolutely not get ink flowing. Ended up snapping it off. Just going to brush the ink on. That weird Japanese brand was way better
Another awesome build.....I always love the colour schemes you pick for you cars. I think i will add a few accessories to that bland interior when i build mine ie magazines, seatbelts, maps or sunglasses etc......
Thanks Dean, yeah with some sprucing up it will be a real eyepiece, especially as a drop top. I think a darker color for the interior will really make it shine.
Great video. My challenge is, I always feel like I am in a hurry to get the kit put together instead of taking my time and making it a labor of love. 😀
hpiguys Workshop That’s going to be to hard to do with my build because of the intricate masking I have to do. So I was thinking of painting the entire body with the main color, mask and paint the second color. Can I clear coat the first color before applying the second color. Enamel Paint, Rustoleum 2x.
Wow, Christ what a beautiful '50's looking model!!! Paint just suits it. Really plays the role, and you did a fantastic job, man.Could one put a clear over the chrome headlights, and call it done? I have always wanted to do chrome headlights differently. Great job, Chris. God Bless. Peace. Tom T4, out
That's a gorgeous build, my friend! Looks really good in those colors :D Question: I've looked everywhere locally and can't find anywhere that still sells Future (including WalMarts and such), where do you get yours?
Yup, see the replies before me. They change the name all the time but it's the same stuff. A bottle I've had for 5 years is about 3/4 full. Lasts forever.
I got mine a few weeks ago. There's a lot of plastic in here, all right. I am disappointed with the quality; the body is full of sink marks and there is poor fit over all. I can't hold that against AMT. I'm sure the tooling is ancient with a lot of mileage, so I can only say I am grateful for the re-boot and besides it's a challenge. But I got a question for you - you built this already. What's with those standoffs molded into the interior tub? Two posts, bearing against the rear glass. Can you enlighten me?
Sweet car and sweet build! Love the color combo! I love cars of the 50's, I wish there was a 1/25 scale kit for a 1957 Oldsmobile Rocket 88.

I do have to ask you....on the 59 Imperial....how did you manage to do the absolutely too tiny raised letters on the hood and front fenders? I use a lighted magnifier on a headband and STILL cant see it enough to attempt either paint or a very light scrape job! Whats your secret?
Rubbed a silver pencil across them when I was done with the entire car, after the final clear coat.
@@hpiguy Thank you....i will give it a go!
From the front bumper to the back bumper is a long distance phone call
Right, and two operators!
Greetings from the Dominican Republic, I have a question. What paint do you use to give that black and silver touch to the front specifically on the grill?
Hello!
You'll want to watch more current reviews where I get into closer details of how I make things. These older ones don't show as much.
That looks so cool and it can be a quick build. Darn you hpiguy, your enthusiasm makes me want one.
Thanks man!
Please do.
The answer to both questions is YES and I placed them on pre-order last week. Stay tuned!
Looks fantastic
Much appreciated!
Do you do commissions? I am wanting a 1966 Ford Thunderbird Convertible done like the Thelma and Louise car for an upcoming signing Susan and Geena are doing. I cant find a diecast model car in 1:25 scale ANYWHERE
I do not, but thanks for asking!
Nice ride... any bodies in the trunk?
You can rent the trunk to a family of six.
Try bare-metal foil... that stuff is really cool and I use it all the time...
Yup, and Molotow pens work well too.
What do you do if you mess up the chrome trim with sharpie?
Alcohol will remove it IF you act fast. Anything over a minute and you have to touch it up with paint.
hpiguys Workshop thanks 👍
hey chris, for a curbside it turned out beautiful. amazing work as always .
Thank you!!!!!
I spent $10 on a molotaw silver pen and the tip would absolutely not get ink flowing. Ended up snapping it off. Just going to brush the ink on. That weird Japanese brand was way better
Giant awesome build Chris!! Great color choices, very well done!!
Thanks Ron!
That's a nice build. Gotta get me one of those. Love the color combo. Good job
👍😄
Thanks Dan!
Gorgeous build, as usual. I want to paint mine white over red two tone :)
Thank you for your support and visiting the channel!
What kind of masking tape do you use
Washi tape
Great video. My challenge is, I always feel like I am in a hurry to get the kit put together instead of taking my time and making it a labor of love. 😀
It comes with practice, but I still over rush things at time too.
Did you clear the body before you painted the white on the top or you just mask the blue off without clear?
Prime, mask roof, paint body, remask body , paint roof, then clear, then silver trim work.
hpiguys Workshop That’s going to be to hard to do with my build because of the intricate masking I have to do. So I was thinking of painting the entire body with the main color, mask and paint the second color. Can I clear coat the first color before applying the second color. Enamel Paint, Rustoleum 2x.
Awesome kit love those old body styles
Thanks, me too!
awesome job, but the crowns are supposed to be gold if your going for a stock build.
Thanks for the tip.
Another great review and build Chris, the Imperial looks really nice!...Bill
Thanks a lot Bill!
Wow, Christ what a beautiful '50's looking model!!! Paint just suits it. Really plays the role, and you did a fantastic job, man.Could one put a clear over the chrome headlights, and call it done? I have always wanted to do chrome headlights differently. Great job, Chris. God Bless. Peace. Tom T4, out
Thank you Tom, always!
Too bad it dosen't have the giant RB413 V-8 under the hood. Or else I would've bought this model kit in a heart beat.
I have no interest in this kit, but you sure did make it look great!
LOL, thanks!
Love the colour choice, it's a stunner 😊
She's a big beautiful boat!
That thing barely fits on the turntable! She's a beauty.
Almost had to break out the cake turntable. Thanks!
That's a gorgeous build, my friend! Looks really good in those colors :D Question: I've looked everywhere locally and can't find anywhere that still sells Future (including WalMarts and such), where do you get yours?
It's not called future anymore. Look for pledge floor care
I just bought some at Walmart, it's called Pledge Revive It Floor Gloss, $6
Yup, see the replies before me. They change the name all the time but it's the same stuff. A bottle I've had for 5 years is about 3/4 full. Lasts forever.
Great looking build Chris, nice color combinations.k.u.t.g.w.
Thanks Jim!
Love the color it just screams 1950’s also great looking model
Thank you Richard!
I'm no expert but they may be leftovers from it being a promo model way back?
That looks great Chris will have to get me one or three. Thanks for sharing.
Or four! Thanks Charles!
@@hpiguy lol yup
Is it true that round2 is actually a really small company and that there are only around 14 employees?
No idea, I don't work there. They are in Indiana and I'm in Antarctica. Woops, WI, just seems like Antarctica this year.
@@hpiguy lol I followed it on the news it was crazy cold glad I am on the other side of the Atlantic
I actually thought round 2 was in America lol
