What makes it a classic is that it’s great no matter how many times you watch it. The story, the characters, and the dialogue are all among cinema’s best. It also has enough secret behind-the-scenes details to fill up an entire book. Having Andre the Giant on set made every day more interesting. He was a gentle giant who loved to socialize. Everything about him was massive, from his drinks to his flatulence.
Billy Crystal’s small part was dangerously funny. No one could hold their laughter thanks to his ridiculous appearances and expert ad-libs. His costars suffered bruised ribs and nausea or were banished from the set during his scenes. Every actor and crew member was dedicated to making the film the best it could be. They practiced so long for a difficult sword-fighting scene that they did it too well. It was over in only a minute, and they had to rechoreograph it to make it longer. A close inspection will also let you see that they also suffered for their art. You’ll notice a scene where Westley favors his left leg after an injury. There’s another where Inigo is actually knocked out by a bonk on the head from a sword.
The suffering never made them want to stop. They asked for as many takes of the final kiss as possible just so they didn’t have to go home. Many of them consider it their favorite work. Even Pope John Paul II and John Gaudi are fans! Like and subscribe to FactsVerse for more on Hollywood’s most universally beloved films. How could they use sword fighting tips from "The mask of Zorro" when The mask of Zorro came out in 1998 and "The princess bride" came out in 1987 ??? A whole 11 years earlier ???
@@dalebaker9533I think they mean "The Mark of Zorro."
I just watched ROBIN HOOD MEN IN TIGHTS tonight. It is one of my very favorite movies that I own and watch on a regular basis. Others include Clue, Captain Ron, Joe Dirt, Dracula Dead and Loving It, Idiocracy, Once Upon A Crime, and Chilly Dogs...just to name a few of my favorites. 👍😊
Imagine buying a bodyguard to protect people from you.....
I was obsessed with the book, and stopped counting when I'd read it 47 times ❤ The film was also fab ❤❤
The number of times we watched this movie is inconceivable.
😂😂😅😊
I don't think you know what that means. ;)
@@KenHowardLCSWGayTherapyLA I do not think it means what you think it means.
Excellent reply lol!
Incontheivable. Fixed. 😊
I don't remember how many times I have watched The Princess Bride but I would watch again right now.

I second this
I came to say that I could not count how many times I’ve watched it!
Truth!
YES!!!
“Mawwiage. Mawwiage is what bwings us togethew today."
Anyone else out there that doesn’t think of this scene when they’re at a wedding?
That, and Space Balls... my two favorite wedding scenes! 😂
I popped that line at the wedding rehearsal of a friend. I heard the bride roaring with laughter from her hidden vantage in the 2nd story sound booth. Even the preacher was laughing. The groom said, I knew one of you was going to say it, I should have known It'd be YOU."
@@jimroberts2647 did you add, “Wuv too wuv will fowwow you forwever so tweasure your wuv.”
Twooooo Wuv
I'm awful. I've learned to pinch myself really hard if I must.not.laugh.
My husband and I were heading to our hometown to get married. I was a nervous wreck. We were packing up everything and I was terrified I'd forget something important; this was it. Our friend took Doug (the guy...) aside and said "I just saw a great movie. Let's kidnap Barb and get her over to the theater." So they literally each got on one of my arms and dragged me to a movie to get me some space. And it was The Princess Bride. Watching this here hit all the feels, in all the ways you can possibly imagine. For almost 37 years, through kids, and moving, and education and breast cancer, I cannot count the times we have said to each other, either word for word, or with love and in deed: "As you wish."
@Narbyful Beautiful and cute, thanks for sharing. And I hope you're well.
@@chumark54 Thanks. We got old sorta young, and struggle with ongoing health issues. But are grateful for healthy, smart adult sons and a happy home. Our sons live close enough that we get to see them regularly, and they still like us. hehe Which we do not take for granted.

Moral of the story; do not ever get married.
"I do not think that word means what you think it means" gets me every time.
I use this with my oncologists that say ‘you are terminally ill’, I’ve lived with leukemia for 23 years
@@thomaspflasterer7366as an oncologist, I think this is hilarious. Congratulations!
same here! :D
@@thomaspflasterer7366 I'm glad your still here. My wife run's a flow department "and is very good and writing up cases" for leukemia. She always tries to keep the staff reminded how important it is to analyze the results correctly which isn't easy and isn't easy for the pathologists either. Hang in there and I hope your well!
My favorite line 😃
“I’m not a witch; I’m your wife!”
the line I quote most often LOL
It's actually "I'm not a *winch* I'm your wife!" - referring to the winch he was frantically reaching for 😊
My partner & I inadvertently traumatized a Taco Bell cashier with the full line of, "I'm not a witch, I'm your wife, and after what I just heard I'm not sure I want to be THAT anymore!" Apparently the poor girl hadn't seen the movie and thought she was seeing a divorce brewing before her very eyes. Took a bit of time for us to explain it to her.
I thought it was "wench".
@@RavenMobile No, it's witch. "Wench" means "young woman." He's definitely not calling her that.
But where is the un-edited BLOOPER???
Apparently it's in the title of this video.
@@michaelhoward142 -- 😅😅😅
I think it must have been the part about Cary Elwes' broken toe bit. But the title is quite misleading.
Love the movie, but gave the video a thumb down.
@@curlytigga7583 As is every title on UA-cam.
That sword fight really is one of the greatest ever. Jill Bearup, a stage combat enthusiast has a great analysis of it on her channel, but gist is that a fight is only as good as the people doing the fighting, and Mandy and Carey may have started off novices, but they were dedicated to that fight and worked really hard.
I remember when they were advertising for the movie Robin Hood men in tights and Cary was interviewed that they had to take dueling lessons for the movie, I was SHOCKED, since he had just been in princess bride…
oh man, I love Jill's fight analsysis videos. Made me go see Mask of Zorro as well just for the fight scene
@@fuzzblightyear145 It is a good fight scene. I still wish Disney would put classic black and white Zorro on Disney plus. I used to watch it all the time on the Disney channel
I took an introduction to stage combat in my first year of college. When going to the sword fighting the professor showed us that clip since it was so well done
"If I do it right handed, it's over too quick...". That line went over my kid's head, and I busted a gut laughing out loud.
I lost count of the number of times I've seen it. I showed the Princess Bride to my fourth graders every year on the afternoon before Christmas vacation. They always loved it.
The first time I saw it was in sixth grade, back in the late 80's. Our teacher told us in advance, "We'll be watching a movie on Friday," to which the classroom responded with cheers. When he then revealed that the film would be called _The Princess Bride,_ we all groaned softly in unison. In spite of the lack of enthusiasm, that weekend, it became, and has remained ever since, perhaps my favorite movie.
Now an adult, the irony (that I was/am the disinterested little boy) does not escape me. So, do I think I've learned to remain receptive to new experiences?
_Only compared to some._
Perfect!
@@pocket83squared How could this not be in the top running for your favorite movie? Swooon worthy, every time, as you wish.
I always showed my 1st graders The Secret Garden before they left for Easter break. That’s a movie I could watch over and over again.
That's awesome! I'd have been giddy if I'd gotten to watch it in my 4th grade class!
(I'd also have been time traveling a few decades into the future.) 😂
I own it. I have lost count of the times I have watched it. One of the best films ever made. Iconic.
I think I've seen the movie on VHS at least 126 1/2 times. The 1/2 because the tape SNAPPED in the middle of watching! Right at the miracle max scene! We knew the film so well we acted out the rest of the scene without a hitch and laughed through it the whole time. I had to play Westley because I was the youngest and everyone else wanted to have lines! My family also quotes this movie incessantly... Whenever someone leaves the house to do something we say "have fun storming the castle!"
VHS? You could have sticky-taped it back together! You'd have to have taped up both sides of the magnetic strip, but that would be enough to hold it for another 60 viewings! You might notice some tracking issues where the magnetic strip is stretched (before it snapped) but that's part of the -frustration- errm 'Joy' of VHS...
That's awesome! (The part where your family could finish the entire movie, not the part about the tape breaking)
@@Raz.CI've done this with cassette tapes too
The Princess Bride is in the TOP TEN of my most favorite movies ever. I have hard copies of it 2 ways plus digital and watch it at least once every 3 months on avg since it was released. @@FactsVerse Have you done a video on Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Michael Caine and Steve Martin? It is one of our family's favorites!
It’s in my top 10 movies list too. I enjoy it so much every time I see it - I’ve lost count - and I still spot new details I didn’t notice before.
Another of my top 10 movies is Galaxy Quest. Interesting that both of these favorites are funny in the best way.
My Husband, son, and I each race small one-design sailboats (single person) on the Ohio River. Our favorite quote, for MANY years, was the line Inigo uses on the getaway ship - - -"I wonder if he is using the same wind we are using?" Classic sailing jargon and completely true!
Also from Ohio, and that line gets used casting fishing lines or an occasional passing car.
The dedication of the actors, especially Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin, really shines through in the final product. And hearing about Andre the Giant's gentle personality despite his imposing stature adds another layer of appreciation for the film. Truly a timeless classic!

So many lines from this movie are in our regular family banter. Love this one always!
Patankin's father died during or before the filming of this movie - his line " I want my father back" wasn't but was from the heart of MAndy. Knowing after this years later and the loss of my own father - the line hits hard!
That line gives me shivers every time, the way Mandy delivers it.
Most people don’t realize it, but this movie is actually just another episode of Columbo.

LOL!!
I thought it was an episode of The Wonder Years... mediaeval version.

I ran out of fingers counting, so it must have been more than 11. 😂
I tell children I have 11 fingers. I demonstrate by counting down from 10...
10, 9, 8, 7, 6... Then show the other hand. "Plus 5 is 11!"
it was more than 11, and i mean it !

I lost count the times I've watched this movie a long time ago. To this day I still wave and say "Have Fun Storming the Castle". For some reason I still get a tear when Mandy says his famous line, as I just rubbed one after watching this. I also hate when the movie ends. Why can't life be so simple and pure? I watched the Princess Bride with my young nephew. He was like the boy in the movie. At first he didn't want to watch it. But, by the time it was over he loved it like everyone else. It's a very special movie that I enjoy watching whenever it is on..
I stopped counting at 117 times. My sister threw a copy of the book at me in High School saying it sucked but I'd probably like it. I did in fact like it, and consider the movie an utter masterpicd.
I have no idea how many times I've seen the movie, but it must be at least 20 times for the full movie. The movie is entertainment "comfort food". Like a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa while sitting by the fireplace on a cool evening. A timeless story with fantasy, love, action, humor, redemption, mystery, suspense. Reiner did a great job directing. It's clear the actors loved their characters and poured their heart and soul into their performances. The cinematography is gorgeous. The editing could be a master-class, with the pacing being near perfect. Wrap it all up in the beautiful soundtrack by Mark Knopfler. What's not to love about the movie?

Sh!
The vhs tape died after my two kids watched it every saturday morning for two years. My two grandchildren watch it on dvd every time they come over to stay.
loved it as a child, now my child loves it. let's see how many generations we can keep this going!
I watched it three times when it was first released in movie theaters. In nearly empty theaters. I tried to get my family to go see it, but they wouldn't. I rented it once it was out on VHS and introduced it to my family. I have watched it countless times and everyone I have introduced it to loved it, but especially initially there was a lot of resistance to watching it. So wonderful.
I have seen it hundreds of times. My youth group would treat it like 'Rocky Horror' and each would choose a scene to preform. I got to do the fight scene dialogue. 😂😂
Reminds me of how, during the pandemic, a large group of celebrities collaborated, where various people recreated a scene at home, for charity. There were a lot of annoying rich-people shenanigans going on, but that was not one of them--it was quite endearing. The person who had the idea put the whole thing on UA-cam for free, which, last I saw, was still there.
I've seen this movie at least 30 times. I loved it when it first came out, and love it even more when I watch it with my daughter. She's almost 16 now, and loves it as much as I do.
The Princess Bride is the best film adaption of a book ever made. Change my mind.
I read the book in college before the movie was produced. As I was leaving campus, I had a fellow classmate sign my copy (with red text sections). It remains one book and movie where I love both equally. That is very rare.
That’s how I feel about To Kill a Mockingbird.

This movie totally changed my mind about Andre, I was just a kid and I kind of believed that he wasn't a nice guy, because he was a heel on WWF. But when I saw him in this movie, I realized that to play Fezzik the way that he did, with such warmth and humor, he had to be an amazing person. He really was at that. I was and still am a huge fan of his, because he was such a sweetheart of a guy, a giant, with a giant heart. Now I'm a short lady, 4'7" tall, but what I wouldn't give for just 1 hug from him.

One of the most charming, beautiful, wholesome films of all time that is absolute perfection in every way. To change anything…one line of script, one glance, one note of music (nod in homage to another movie masterpiece Amadeus) would take away from all that is extraordinary about The Princess Bride♥️🥹♥️. I’ve long lost count of how many times I’ve seen it and I could turn it on again any day, any time and I would be instantly engrossed. Thank you so much FactsVerse!! I feel honored for the ask and your reply♥️. I am an avid lover of all things related to movies and the stories behind the films that lend so much to my deep appreciation for every aspect of the process. The cinematography, music and score, the costumes and perspective. I could go on and on. I love the focus on the greats, the so called classics “Gone With the Wind”, the “Godfather” and another of my personal favorites “To Kill a Mockingbird” which is a work of art; but never to forget those films that are brilliant in their own right but may not fall under the traditional idea of a ‘classic’ such as Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” which is precious or the incredibly clever and brilliantly voiced “The Emperor’s New Groove”; or the forgotten genius of “Ragtime” a brilliant, tragic, magnificently acted and executed film. I think you’re doing a fine job but I will definitely post if I think of anything I’d love to see! Thank you so much for your content which is wonderful! And for reaching out☺️🫶🕊️.

My cousin and I watched this film many times that we knew the words by heart. I would listen to the audio soundtrack and could visualize every scene from memory. I won a free drink once in a bar when I answered the trivia question: Who composed the music for The Princess Bride? My cousin wrote to William Goldman and asked him if there would be a sequel. Mr. Goldman said there was a problem with getting "Buttercup's Baby" off the ground. I don't remember why, but he did say it would most likely not happen. He said to look at The Princess Bride characters like REAL people where good endings are only for the moment. I won't repeat what he said about the most likely future of the characters. To be honest, it was like he had given up on life and wanted to pass his sorrow downstream.
I'll just add that when Buttercup asks Westley to "fetch me that pitcher" and he hands it to her saying "as you wish" I cry spontaneously - every time. I'm crying now thinking about it. That kind of love is rare.
I think one of my favorite lines among many memorable lines was the first one we hear from Miracle Max, "Go away!" You can get a laugh just from that line alone.

Everyone says Andre was such a kind and gentle person! It makes me happy knowing he was such an amazing person! There are so many fun, silly, and funny stories about him. Tho my favorite has to be the one Hulk Hogan talked about in an interview. An experience he had with Andre while on a plane traveling to the next WWE match. Apparently Andre scared all the passengers and attendants on the plane because he let out a massive fart. The fart apparently shook the plane slightly and made everyone think the big BOOM sound of his fart was one of the plain Engines exploding!😹 From what I remember of the interview Hulk had to apologize to everyone with Andre and they had to calm everyone down and tell them it’s ok Andre just farted that’s all! we aren’t going to die it’s fine! We are OK! 😹😹😹 if I could find and link the clip from that interview I would lol😹

It's almost inconceivable that I have watched The Princess Bride between 1 and 2 times a year every year since it released on video in '88.
I bought 2 Videos and watch it at least ones a year. Better then The Wizard of Oz. I once asked my Grandson Marine Friends a Groupe of about 12 . "have you seen The Princess Bride" all got a very big smile on their faces. Aloha, Annie

Us too lol! Glad to know that you're a fan of Princess Bride. What other types of video would you like to see?
When I took fencing, that fencing scene was played for us lil kids for the first day. It is not much like competition fencing, but it's such amazing choreographed fencing, it's inspiring to this day!
I'll never stop watching The Princess Bride. I own the Directors cut DVD and if I'm scanning across cable channels and find it already playing, yes stopping is inconceivable.....
I couldn't even tell you how many times I have watched this movie. I never gets old, and it never will get old in my mind. This movie is 100X better than 99% of entertainment even today.
Can’t remember how many times I have watched this movie but it’s been my favorite movie ever.
It was a movie which hit all the great entertainment categories: love, loss, laughter, danger, comically bad guys, pageantry, scenery, and good overcoming evil. But Peter Falk saying "as you wish" was a love-filled arrow right into the heart. It's one of very few movies I can watch again and again.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
Back in the early 90s, I bore a strong resemblance to Carey Elwes in this film and was constantly asked to softly say to many a young lady, "As you wish."
Only seen the movie twice, but I must say this recap of all the hilarious things that took place in the movie that we never witnessed could be one of the greatest bedtime stories ever told. LMAO. 🤣😂
"Using Benetti's Defense against me, eh?" "I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain..."
Where's the blooper?
At this point I have already lost count. "The Princess Bride" is such a whimsical, funny and magical movie that feels fresh every time, wonderful every time. I think is fair to say that the cast and crew have created a cinematic gem that hopefully will be enjoyed for many generations. For now I will enjoy it many times more.❤😊

I’ve watched it a bazillion times and counting. Love it 😍
I am another one who has lost count of the number of times and have multiple copies. My favourite all time film which I always take the opportunity to introduce to the uninitiated. Perfection!
It's such an awesome movie. That perfect adventure/comedy movie. Of course done in the 80's. The decade where so many other awesome movies were made.
Sometimes I haven't seen any only so I could see them all again fresh.
Hands down one of the best movies ever made! The casting was perfect!
I've watched it so many times I lost count. One of the best family films ever!!
