  • Pickup trucks are insanely popular in the United States & Canada, yet one nameplate holds less than 1% marketshare. We're looking at the dead for 2021 Nissan Titan.
    PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/...
    We here on TestDrive have had a run of booking vehicles that end up getting killed off. Recently we've gone out of our way to book a number of those killed off in 2020 but this one came as a bit of a surprise to us since we had it on our schedule before the news broke. Our full tour and review is on this 2020 Nissan Titan PRO-4X Luxury Crew Cab 4x4 pickup truck and we're looking at why this was the worst selling full-size pickup truck in the United States and Canada for 2019, the worst selling pickup truck of any segment for 2019 in both countries, and why it's already off to a terrible start for 2020.
    We go over the sales data from Nissan Canada and Nissan USA when it comes to the Titan & Titan XD and compare it to the rest of the pickup truck market. We then go over some of the reasons why this wasn't a popular seller, ultimately leading to Nissan Canada's decision to end sales in Canada after 2021. We also discuss what was axed in 2019, specifically the 5.0L V8 Cummins turbo diesel engine offered on the XD heavy duty trucks, and what changes came for this 2020 model year.
    We also discuss some of the features or lack thereof found on this truck compared to the other full size pickups we've driven to date, and why you might be looking at one of these instead. We jump inside the 2020 Nissan Titan to talk about the interior features and layout, along with the updated 8" infotainment system, 12 speaker Fender audio, Intelligent AroundView cameras, panoramic sunroof, Nissan Safety Shield 360, dual zone automatic climate control, and heated and ventilated front seats.
    We then take the 2020 Nissan Titan on a real-world road test to talk about the 5.6L Endurance V8 gasoline engine and the issues we have with it, specifically off-the-line latency with the throttle response from a standstill. We go over some of the positives like the Zero-Gravity front seats and simple pricing/trim levels, but we keep coming back to the throttle response issue we experience.
    Ultimately it ruins our experience with this truck, making it one of the worst vehicles we've driven to date as the Nissan Titan doesn't do anything better than the Big Three American trucks, nor does it have price on it's side. We can't figure out why anyone is buying the Titan, so we ask you our viewers to chime in with your thoughts, especially if you're a current Titan owner. We report our real-world fuel economy test results with this half tonne pickup truck and wrap up with how we really feel about it.

    This truck is actually not a bad option. Hard to compete with the American pickups because of their brand loyalty and frequency to update and redesign their interiors and exteriors.

      You’re right, it’s not a bad option overall, in fact everything else about the truck was really good. If I didn’t have this power delay problem at full stop I’d have been extremely positive about it overall, but this one problem is a major one and ruined the entire experience.

    The reason folks buy these...because if you walk into a dealer, they will deal....0% interest, $4,000-$8,000 discounts standard before you even put the screws to the dealers...you can get an MSRP $65k truck (in the US) for the low 50s...or even in the 40s.
    Then in the US you get a 100,000 mile warranty and our local dealer provides a lifetime power train warranty. Not sure how much that is worth to folks, but that has us sold and trading in our F150. Good luck folks.
    FYI, your delay is because of your traction control being on. Turn it off amigo.

      Strange about the locking tailgate, I’m wondering if they cheapen it out just for the Canadian market. The throttle issue is only when you come to a complete stop, not a rolling stop through a stop sign like a lot of people up here think is acceptable. I tested it every way I could to cover all the bases. Either way if you’re happy with yours that’s all that matters!

      I had this for a week, so I guess that’s better? Basically if you roll through stop signs you’ll never experience the throttle delay, and it only occurs within the first 2 seconds of a complete stop, so if you come to a traffic light and wait 20 seconds it’ll be fine. The rest of the truck is ok, but everything is overshadowed by this one critical problem that other Titan owners have confirmed in the comments.

    You are stomping the throttle off a full stop. People don't drive like this on the street. You generally release the gas peddle and let the vehicle roll and than gradually accelerate. There is a software delay in the drive by wire system to maximize fuel consumption. The way you are driving, this thing will probably do 10 MPG.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 роки тому +1

      No, I stomped on the throttle on the third attempt during this video to prove my point. Normal driving with this awful truck had the exact same experience, a serious delay off the line as if the engine went into a cylinder-deactivation mode. This is not a software 'feature' to increase fuel efficiency, this is a mistake on the Manufacturer's part and needs to be fixed.. at least in the US, since this truck is DEAD here in Canada.

      This delay is for a reason. One: so you dont slam your head thru the head rest, two: as a soft start so the engine isnt ramming 400 pound feet of torque thru the drive train instantly. I will agree it is annoying not having full throttle from dead stop acceleration. My 2017 Titan does this but ONLY during the first few minutes of cold start-warm up period otherwise I dont have this delay once up to operating temps. I test drove a 2020 pro 4x and this delay was every time no matter engine temperature.

    This is probably the most underrated pickup on the market. It does everything well, has more towing capacity than most of its competitors ( in the 4 door 4 wheel drive setup) go ahead and check, Ford especially likes to throw those huge towing numbers out there but what they don’t tell you is that those big numbers are for a stripped down, regular cab, 2 wheel drive model. Most of the F150s in this configuration are only rated to tow around 8000 pounds. But the number one thing that the Titan has going for it is it’s RELIABLE.

      You do mean killing it off in Canada right? As a Nissan technician in the US, we have dozens of future training for the remodel in 2022. And to put the debate of the delay on acceleration to rest.. it’s a algorithm in the TCM to improve fuel economy for the US and Canada. As well as not letting 400ft/lbs of torque instantly slam the drivetrain. As a ram rebel owner, it’s probably worse than the stop start feature. But I can’t argue with the negatives you listed in the video. But compared to a tundra it’s miles ahead in tech. Like damn at least it has a locking rear diff where the trd pro doesn’t. And for any titan owners that most likely won’t read this, find ethanol free gas if available. Direct injection always clogs up with ethanol during the winter months.

    I have a 2017 Nissan Titan Platinum reserve and I absolutely love it. It drives really smooth, feels big but very manageable at the same time. I don't think from a stop anyone really stomps on the gas like that. I haven't noticed any lag whatsoever in my truck but then again from a stop I just accelerate normally. But to answer your question why anyone would choose this over a Ford F-150 for me, I just don't trust Ford in the long run. I always buy Japanese because they just make better more reliable cars than the domestic brands. Also the seats in the Nissan are a lot more comfortable than that Ford and it just drives better in my opinion. I also got a really insane deal with a great warranty that I couldn't pass up. Really couldn't be happier with my Nissan Titan. For people that are doubting it, just go and take a test drive and see for yourself.

      First thing I thought of too. I live in Mexico and work in the U.S. and have experienced this with the Jeep Gladiator but with the reverse happening. Since Mexico has more lax emissions the truck drives with so much “umph” and power off the line. Before that I drove a Mini Countryman JCW also from the Mexican market. The Mini’s spec sheet even listed a higher horsepower and torque number (not a whole lot but still) because of the emissions controls or lack thereof.

    Anyone who would spend $60+ thousand on a pickup is likely to be motivated by forces other than rational thinking. In many cases its a fashion statement. A pickup is pure profit for the auto manufacturers as it is basically a WWII light military vehicle with some glitter and tinsel added. For most of its history the Toyota Landcruiser was basically a 1938 Chevrolet light truck as used by the US military when they conquered Japan. OK I confess - I drive a little Mazda and live in fear of big pickups.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 роки тому +1

      There’s nothing wrong with driving a ‘little’ truck! Pickups are only profitable if they end up selling. The fact that Nissan in Canada has almost 100 brand-new 2019s at full price shows their problem.

    Spot on review. My 2020 Pro4x has had this horrible hesitation off the line since day one as well. Countless other owners talking about it too on forums. Nissan has been typically unhelpful. You actually understate the problem by not mentioning the critical danger of the throttle delay when trying to take a left with oncoming traffic approaching. Had a very close call recently in trying to go left with minimal distance from oncoming traffic. I would all but guarantee accidents have taken place because if this. Additionally major, bad clunking and revving issues.

      Nissan Titans and Armadas built from Gen 2 2016-2018 have an engine knock issue they put out a technical service bulletin TSB 057 I think to have engine cylinder #7 scoped for scored cylinder wall. If under warranty they do a short block fix, out of warranty they want over 9 grand to fix or you get a crate engine for 18 grand. This is a huge problem and a safety recall should be done if engine seizes on the road. Now they say 2024 is the end of Titans in U.S. and Canton Mississippi plant will focus on ev frontier and some other ev. Nissan makes so many mistakes and they don't support current customers. EV cars were a huge govt boondoggle like CFL light bulbs they partnered with GE to suck in unaware citizens. All in the name of "climate change" but you know someone is making money. Nissan has financial problems, the Chinese will probably own it in 5 years.

    Hi I was watching another video and turns out the nissian titan has hill start assist.
    So if your on a incline it gives you a second after taking your foot off the brake to press the gas so you dont roll back. I can only guess this is the culprit of your major complaint. Looks like your roads are level so it can either be something wrong with the hill start assist system or maybe you can turn it off the feature.

    I went with the 2020 pro4x because of the interior features, the bed was a big deal for me with the utilitrack, I’m a trim carpenter and all the tile down options are awesome. The dealer let me try the truck out with my rv and it doesn’t squat at all and that was one of my biggest complaints with the f-150 5.0 that I traded in. It would squat too much. The interior with all the stitching, the heated and ventilated seats, the power memory settings, the black headliner and pillars and the sound system, the warranty and the price was still thousands lower than anything comparable with the big three and then I was able to get 0% financing with nmac. Pretty much the best overall package I could get anywhere. Now if I was looking for a base model truck or if I was looking for a higher trim level truck I probably would not have gone for this but I paid $47,981 plus TTL U.S. for a fully loaded Titan with the leather, with the utility package and with the adventure package and mine has every option... the Titan side steps and pro4x mud flaps, two sets of floor mats... just every option and no other brand could compare to those options and that pricing.
    My complaint would be the resolution on the camera. The screen is nice and crystal clear so why are the cameras so bad. Other than that the pro4x rides pretty rough and I also had the delay with the stop and go mainly at stop signs but that did go away at about 5-6k miles I’m thinking it had something to do with the truck learning my driving habits, that’s about all the bad I got.

    I own a 2019, I too had a problem with the acceleration at a stop. I too would smash my foot to the floor and have the delay. It took me months to realize the truck was quicker. When I pressed the pedal halfway to 3/4. I think possibly the engineers at Nissan developed the engine and transmission for torque, to conserve fuel or the acceleration was programed this way to get the best out of the engine and transmission. - this some of the conclusions I came too. I test drove F150s, Rams, Chevys and Tundra, I choose this vehicle from the list of pros and cons that I thought were important. Oh and if you want a quicker response time....then yes ECO boost (and greater maintenance cost) is the way to go......or a sports car. I didnt need a truck to have a sub 4 second 0-60. So I just bought one. ANd I think part of the reason this deserving truck is being discontinued due to lack of popularity is because of crap car reviewers, who lament after features and giant IPad like screens. If a truck doesn't have one, it's "dated" and you don't "get a lot for your money". Here's the kicker...none of those reviewers, because they won't be in business long if they do, talk about truck reliability. This is the last honest truck. V8 with no Start Stop/Cylinder Deactivation. That means it's reliable. All of you people shelling out $10-$20K more for comparable Big 3 pickups can count on a host of problems...and they are all over the Internet. This truck has plenty of luxury, more than enough capability than 90% of you will ever use, and they have really comfortable and high quality interiors, actual buttons to use the features, and it's A LOT of fun to drive. So buy your Chevy or Ram if you want, and buy your Ford if you want to spend more time in the shop than you do on the road. Meanwhile, those of us who drove ALL of those trucks and chose this one will still be driving it 10 years from now if we want.

The truck almost killed me on a boat ramp when the parking pall broke and allowed the truck to roll back…e-brake could not hold on the incline with the boat hooked up. Transfer case locked itself into 4WD at freeway speed cupping the tires. Steering bushing wore out at only 15,000 miles. Tech said GM was sourcing the rubber from China and the quality was inconsistent. Entire steering column rotated 30 degrees to the right after an under-engineered aluminum clamp broke. The seats started moving around and rattling with less than 20,000 miles. GM gave me a 2016…that one got stuck in lane keeping assist after I exited the freewy and caused my tires to screech around in a parking lot until I heard a loud pop and it stopped trying to get me back in my lane! Dealer could not duplicate. And then, of course the AC condenser failed prematurely outside of warranty and bang, there goes $1,000!!!
    I will NEVER even look at another Chevrolet. They are industry leading on tech without much engineering thought out into longevity, interiors are drab.
    Had a Dodge Durango long ago, of course, the transmission went out.
    My Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JLU is on its 3rd Rear axle with #4 on order. It has also had a new driveshaft, steering control box and three steering stabilizers!! NEVER again on a Jeep either.
    Fords are overpriced. There are so many of them that your resale value will SUCK. They brake a lot from what I have read.
    Was going to buy the new Tundra but I see that Toyota is having to remove the cab and front of from the frame to fix a waste gate valve issue on the v6 Turbo!! Seriously!
    So for me, I think I will take my chances on the Titan and feel safe with a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty

Chevy and Ford don’t even come close in interior for the price, and don’t have the manual rear locket.

Matter of fact, no issues at all. Been a long time Toyota guy and made the switch to Nissan over a year ago. I work for Ford. Newer F150's are the biggest pieces of shit you can buy right now, not to mention way over priced. All day long i see Sync issues, IWE problems with 4wd (stupidest design ever), cam phaser issues, transmission failures and the list goes on. Hell they have a new recall come out evey day. The engineers cant solve problems fast enough. Big 3 or not, Ford does not make a better product. I have been heavily researching Titan for awhile now, am in the market for a new 4x4 tow rig in the next yr or so. What I came up with is, its a great truck overall, none of the other reviewers mentioned a lag, But, I found that the 5.6L V8 has a flaw, #7 cylinder goes bad and the engine knocks, Nissan has been replacing quite a few of these on both Titans and Armada's due to engine knock up thru at least 2018 not sure if Nissan has corrected this flaw, and it can occur at low miles. But it is sporadic whether yours will develop this or not. Quite a few have experienced this since I came across one forum thread with quite a few owners stating they are having a new shortblock installed due to engine knock with the 5.6L.

    I respect your opinion but what you are describing with the throttle this is called drive by wire hesitation or also known as inherent propagation delays. This is used by many manufacturers to delay throttle response for your safety at a stand still so when you are in a parking lot you don't run a pedestrian over. It can be more noticeable on certain makes and models. This is what I was taught in auto tech school . Also you can by pass this if you need 100% TP for those that don't need it with a tuner. I did this on my 14 Nissan Xterra (bully dog tuner $400) for off roading purposes and had to do it on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma when I owned it for off roading purposes as well. AGAIN THIS IS NORMAL FOR VEHICLES WITH DRIVE BY WIRE:)

    I test drove the big 3 trucks plus the Titan when I bought my Titan Pro4X in March, 2020. I don’t experience the issues you described with throttle response, so I assume it was an issue with the truck you tested. Comparably equipped, the sticker price for the Loaded Titan Pro 4x was cheaper than Ford and Ram, plus Nissan provided much bigger discounts off sticker. The Chevy and Nissan were close in price, but I liked the Titan interior, overall exterior appearance, and drive better. I liked the Ram a lot, but the out the door price would have been over $10K more for the Ram. Ford is simply overpriced for what you get and reliant on a lot of customer loyalty, in my opinion. I think the Titan is the best value 1/2 ton truck in the higher end models like the loaded Pro4X or Platinum Reserve…. assuming you don’t need a ton of towing or heavier duty capacity.

It makes absolutely no sense to me that Nissan is trying to sell at same MSRPs at their competition (and without incentives). The only way Nissan could generate any decent sales would be by discounting it like it does with the Frontier and lowering the starting prices by $15k-$20k (Canadian market). I rent a ton of cars, have driven all trims of f150, ram Rebel (which was really nice, my only gripe is the volume-knob transmission control), test drove some sierra 1500 trims, and I drive Ford's for work; I test drove one of these and was sold. It does feel like 1st gear is really low but responsiveness is definitely not an issue with mine. I owned an '05 with no issues, had been shopping Ford and my '14 F150 3.5 eco broke down on me again (3rd throttle body) on my way to the dealership; seemed like a bad omen. The titan is not a bad half ton truck, personally think it competes very well with the american made half tons, and its sad to see it not sell well. Edit: Maybe it doesn't compete as well on the luxury end, but for the doublecab and crewcab base models it competes extremely well (s and sl trims) which is what most would buy anyways. Infiniti makes worse luxury vehicles than chevy does, and GM has two luxury brands above chevy, so if nissan has to make vehicles with even less luxury than their infiniti counterparts, than you really do have rental car quality even in the highest trim.
    The titan xd on the other hand is a complete waste of money and resources and nissan needed to kill it off entirely. It just doesn't compete with other 3/4th ton trucks. In its max payload form it has lower payload than an F150, it just barely beats the silverado and ram 1500 in payload. For a gas powered 3/4th ton truck its payload should be 3500lbs. It would be a contractors dream if it could have the same payload as the american 3/4th tons. Doesn't need to tow more than the 11,900lbs its rated for. But in the meantime Nissan is dumping valuable RnD into the XD and the regular titan is suffering for it.
    Edit: the transmission at least for american made titans is an inhouse nissan design. Maybe the canadian version is using a mercedes transmission but just figured id throw that out there. Also that is 100% a throttle and ECU programming issue.

      Strangely the only Titans I’ve seen on the road here since I picked this one up we’re XDs. I consider the XD to be a 5/8ths tonne truck, it’s not as capable of a proper three quarter tonne, but it’s a bit more capable than a typical half tonne.

      @james2042 4 роки тому +1

      @@PRNTestDrive Edited the origional comment right as you responded, rip. Anyways the XD is just a 3/4th ton truck from the mid 2000s. Like engine, payload, towing ratings, all mid 2000s. I mean towing wise it competes with the RAM HD's from 2018 that had the 5.7 under the hood (still destroyed in payload tho) Seriously though, go look at half ton ratings from a 2008 2500 or f250, then look at the ratings on the XD. It is not a 5/8th ton truck, nissan just calls it that because they can't make a truck to compete with the rest. If nissan really wanted to bring the fight in the 3/4th ton, they would need to just steal the 6.7 cummins and throw a 6 speed on it (Since the regular 850lb-ft of torque engine is not ram exclusive), and get the payload to at least 3200lbs with the gas and 2700 with the diesel, and to get the tow rating with the diesel up to like 16-17k. If they did that then the titan xd would deserve to exist, but currently it is just outclassed by american half tons, especially the ford f150, which you can get with a 3.5 ecoboost, crew cab, 3000lbs of payload and 11,000lbs of towing

    I have a 2017 Pro4X and my tailgate locks with the fob or keyless entry? Not really sure why you are the only reviewer who hasn’t given this a decent review? Your delay comment....really 4 times? Honestly, you put allot of words in people’s mouths? Sorry, this was t a review but more of a stats update on sales?
    I like that I don’t see one on every corner. Fords are rental cars and they feel like it. Ram, maybe? Never a Ford.
    Good luck with your channel, but this wasn’t a good bias review but a personal opinion.

      You know a review is a personal opinion right? That’s the entire point of it, if not people would just rely on the specs on the manufacturers website and nothing else. Here’s the bottom line, any vehicle you buy is meant to go forward when you push the gas pedal, this one didn’t. That’s a problem, so much so that it completely ruined the experience for me and was the first time I ever drove a press car and purposely left it at home and chose something else to drive, and I’ve driven about 250 cars in the past 5 years.
      Everything else about this truck was fine, not great, but average. You bought one, great. It seems like you feel my video was a personal attack against you as we’ve heard from a number of other Titan owners in the comments so far and no one has gotten upset like you. Here’s some personal advice from me to you: go enjoy your Titan. Don’t go looking for reviews of it to try and reaffirm your purchase decision. If you like it, that’s all that should matter to you.

    Bought a 2021 pro4x . Nissan family, fit and finish, 5 year warranty, reliability...Only truck on market with a real power steering pump. Not electric steering. Feels like what a truck is sappose to feel like. My opinion can't go wrong. Fords are underpowered. Turbo 6.. heat does wonders to a motor..Chevy is unreliable n is far more known motor issues..
    Been there done that .

    I’m buying a 2024. Sold on the v8, column shifter and no turbo. Also about $20k less than similar F150.
