- Since this baby was getting some love over on IG (and there's about to be a bunch of videos on the topic here on my channel), I thought I'd share it! What do you think of this closure style?
-
I made this skirt out of a thrifted duvet cover as a mock-up for my Grammy's dress (check out the video if you're interested!), but I didn't film any of the process, oh no! It was heavily inspired by the Coquelicot Skirt from Wildflower Design, so if you're looking for a skirt pattern similar to this, I highly recommend checking out her work! I am in the process of making a [very, very thorough] tutorial about split side skirts, so keep an eye out for that in the near future!

LOVE this idea!!!!!! Would love a pattern or video or both!
Thank you! There's a tutorial video coming out soon!
Yippeeeeeee!!! Love love love this skirt!
I love it too and can't wait for the pattern
How cute is this,😍 I'm going to go look for the pattern!!
Same!! I love this!!
18th century skirts are back (sans pannier) I love it!
1940s too.
I was thinking 1500s
I love
I’ve made 2 of these already but ties on front and back instead of lace. I love them and they are so easy to make!
Ya I watched a girl get dressed with the old clothes and that pretty much it
Traditional Chinese skirts are like this! The outfits are called Hanfu and they’re super gorgeous
Are they split front and back like that? I don't remember them being that way...? 😅
@@BlueGlow26I Thought Qun's were a large skirt that have little holes for the belt
@@moka_petit a large skirt yes, but I'm wondering if the structure is the same as here
@@BlueGlow26it is! It’s a type of dress called 馬面裙, it’s just that other styles of dresses in most dynasties were more popular
@@arielleung5958 ah~ yes I've heard of 馬面裙,somewhat similar concept, but still a bit different in construction I guess
I love this because you can actually put stuff like phone/keys in pockets and not have them visibly weigh the skirt down in those areas!
I wish more skirts were like this. The amount of times that I have struggled with an invisible zipper is a crime.
The amount of times 🥴 my sensitive skin has received burns because of zippers ( even hypoallergenic) ..Give me one in all colors , styles, length etc ❤❤
Wrap skirts are a thing, lol 😅
There's a reason why these types of skirts are not popular anymore.
@@seraby7151why?

THIS should be the standard for skirts! I will riot in the streets for this fit AND pockets!
Tell me where and when! I’m there with ya! 🪡 🧵 LOL!!!
You’d even be able to RIOT in that skirt ❤️🔥
You Go Girl!
This design reminds me of the traditional Chinese Hanfu skirts! My friend gave me one and it's SO easy to get on and off, plus I have massive pockets so I never need a purse with it unless I want to accessorize
I neeeeeed this! Perfect mom skirt. (Ajustable for comfort and huge pockets) Also good for people with pcos or endometriosis (bloat and swelling). If i cant buy this im making it! 🥰
This needs to be a thing more, imagine this for maternity 😩
In what way is this good maternity clothing? Imagine having to lace up that whole thing while having a huge belly. Not practical whatsoever.
Might be a cool show off piece but Def not for daily wear. Imagine having to redo all that to go to the bathroom etc. I see no way this is easier than just a zipper, simple tie straps, or elastic band
@@mh56487 the adjustability was more so what I was going at, you can wear that piece for any special occasion through out your growing belly
As someone who hated the idea of buying maternity clothes JUST to wear for a few months, I didn’t lol 😂 but something that would’ve grown with me more, I probably would’ve invested in (especially since I never went down to my original pants size either 😂)
"Having to redo all of that"? You lift your skirt to pee........... Who is pulling their skirts and dresses down out here to go to the bathroom?
Anywho, yes! The ability of the skirt waist to grow with you during pregnancy is 100% a selling point! And if you're losing weight, you'd get to keep the skirt longer lol
That’s what women use to wear a 200 years ago
@@JP-rf7cu yea, and 200 years ago it was inconvenient too. That's why designs changed.
The dual-purpose modesty panels and pockets are BRILLIANT!
Pockets!!!! Yes!!! Please!!!! We need them so much😊
I'm amazed at how this skirt is both really practical, and absolutely gorgeous! The snatched waist and sash make it really elegant and "couture". I would love to see this in a luxurious satin with a matching top, as a ball gown! If I wanted to make a wedding dress with my own hands, this is probably what I would go for! You can't get it wrong with that adjustable waist!
In a bronze lame' or covered with a sheer iridescent something.. It would look gorgeous!!
I hadn't thought of making a dressy skirt in this pattern. But you are right. It would be gorgeous. Have I got material for something dressy!😊
Omg I loveee this not only would skirts fit so much better but you have MASSIVE POCKETSSS
Such an excellent style, especially given that it easily accommodates fluctuations in waist size due to bloating/weight gain or loss/pregnancy etc!
Tell 'em king!
This!!!! I always feel a little worse when I already feel bloated and then my skirt is tight on top of it.
Right! Too bad you can't use the same technique with a pair of pants.
@juliettevharris is not exactly the same but have you looked into wrap around pants? I used to make them for larp costuming, and the waist goes on very similar to this skirt. Tie on the back then tie on the front. The sides are "open" but honestly usually only flared out from about the knee down.
@Illustrioustaco I usually wear more form-fitting pants. Are you saying it technically is kind of form fitting, just not past the knee? I think I could maybe imagine that working. I'll look into it. 🙂
Gorgeous and indeed an 18th century skirt method! Though they would have had separate pockets not attached to the skirt.
My sister makes historical costumes, and just this evening was telling me about the actual 18th century version of this skirt she is planning to make, as part of a historical outfit.
We were having a fun time taking about the separate pockets, and how funny it is that they were frequently beautifully embroidered, even though they were worn under the skirt, and basically, no one was going to see them.
@@OrlaQuirk re: pockets... If you're going to make it, make it pretty.
Same with a bra. Little secrets like that can make you feel so feminine!😊
@OrlaQuirk I'm sure you know, but most skirts of the time would have had side slits so that you could pull your pocket through, as otherwise the pocket would be inaccessible underneath your petticoats. So while pockets weren't often visible, they were visible often enough that the embroidery could be appreciated! :)
@@MusicalBotany I am no expert, but I never heard of anyone pulling the pocket through the slits to access it. I always assumed they slid their hands in. I've never seen an 18th century garment that I could see the pocket slits, or notice the garments or pocket below. I did see a cute photo of an 18th century gown with a skirt open in front, and the corners of the hem were tucked under the skirt and pulled through the pocket slits, sticking out several inches on each hip.
The thought occured to me that pulling the pocket out through the slits in one's skirts could be the 18th century equivalent of a modern woman dumping the contents of her purse on a table. 😸
Million dollar idea. Don't shark tank it build it on your own. Wedding dresses that grow with you no more diets until the big event.💜
Oh my god no more need for a Dozen bridesmaids in the bathroom with you. You can just undo the front of the dress and move it to the side while you pee
@@samwebb3577 Totally could change the game well in that example change the break time for the game.
We need more skirts like this available in stores
Gercektenmi.
Yes💪 no more "I'm sorry, we don't carry your size"
But then again, brands don't make big sizes because it's more expensive with more fabric, so to make more fabric for EVERY single garment might not be something they'd be interested in anyway🤷♀️
Besides how it’s tied, this is how 18th century petticoats we’re constructed!! Love to see it make a comeback!
So make it happen. I hear so often " I wish hats would come back"....how about just wear a hat?
@@damesaphira9790 I quite enjoy sewing historically inspired garments in my free time, so way ahead of ya. 😉
@@heatherthevictorianghost ~Excellent! I like your style! I too just jump off into the deep end and wear the period pieces I love!
i wore a skirt like this in a musical i was in! though both ends tied into bows instead of one being lacy
it was the fullest skirt i’ve ever worn fr, these things get so much volume
When I was in elementary school, we had to learn a folkloric dance. My class learned huapango (I'm from Hidalgo, México) and the skirts we wore had to be tied in a similar way to the one shown in the video.
I WAS JUST THINKING THAT! im puerto rican and it reminded me of the skirts you wear for flamenco
Your video emphasizes two trends that are crucial to us currently: 1. sewing your own clothes (ensuring the ethical production of clothes much as possible), 2. making it adjustable (long-lasting clothes fighting the mindless consuption and fast fashion). Keep up great work!
I need multiples of these skirts in all the colors because these are FABULOUS!!!!
You can actually find these as mamianqun (a skirt from the Ming dynasty), usually sold on Taobao! Although maybe not with the pockets, unfortunately…
When you don’t sew but definitely want the pattern so it can sit in your closet never to be used… so cute
I felt that in my soul. 😂😂😂
Same...

That skirt is 100% more beautiful than modern joke of a skirt
That’s so freaking cute, I’d love to see it in a shorter version(above the knees, mid thigh) I think that would be so cute with the poof all the layers give.
That would be adorable! I don't wear a lot of shorter skirts, but I think the floof would be super fun!
The pattern maker actually included a shorter length in the pattern, it's an AWESOME pattern to work with, super adjustable!
Love poof :) our great grandmother's were very hardworking AND feminine.
@@jenniisthewriterwould you share there name for the pattern, and/or the pattern maker's name? I saw this skirt in a video that a friend was watching, and I didn't catch the pattern information. Tsyvm!
@@LiliAquinasthe link for the pattern is in the video description of the short
Oh my gosh, love this design! I would def buy a skirt like this
The motif is like "batik", a work of art from Indonesia
Also love how it allows for absolutely massive pockets!
YES! You are absolutely right, this is about how apron-front skirts of the 18th century would have been constructed. Except the pockets being a separate garment in that case. And i’m not sure if there was lacing, but it’s a genious idea!
I would literally spend so much money on that skirt if you sold them. Absolutely gorgeous.
its super easy to make! if you wanna be accurate its just two rectangles for the skirt gathered up into two waist bands that have ties, search 18th century petticoat tutorials, they dont have built in pockets tho since at the time it was considered easier to have a set of pockets that you wear underneath the skirt, reach thru the side slits to access them
This looks like a incredible way to reduce the sizing problems women face.
I absolutely adore this and I don't usually wear skirts and dresses! I'd buy one if you sold them!❤❤❤
This is also very similar to a style of Chinese and Korean skirt I've seen worn higher up on the body. I'll be using it myself for sure.
do you know what the chinese skirts are called? ive been trying to look them up
@@moniquerodriguez3013 I believe the Qixiong Ruqun uses this type of skirt, just up around the chest instead of the waist.
@@washipuppy thank you!
Also reminds me of hakama!
Yes! I’m Chinese and I immediately thought of how skirts for hanfu are worn just like this!
That pattern and blue and white convo is beautiful! Love how it falls as well. Beautiful skirt, so fresh and elegant.
One side fits all...perfect
I love this. Seems like it would fit so much more comfy than zipped or elasticated skirts
Oh, that's gorgeous! I would love a patchwork broom skirt made this way.
That skirt is goals!!! It's gorgeous!!!
It’s such a flattering line too, so pretty!
I never knew i needed something more than this.
GIRLLLLLLLL!!!!! ITS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! It’s giving the whole “adventurous maiden exploring in the woods” vibe 🤩
"mom, I need new fabric, i found a new project!!!!"
This looks stunning, and will probably be a new go -to item
Love this. Would absolutely wear skirts more often if they were like this. Btwn fluctuating weight and being bloated so often....this is fantastic
Am so picky when it comes to skirts and dresses but I think am in love ❤️
This is awesome. I'd buy it. And the fabric you used is gorgeous
i need every school costumer to watch this !!!!
😮 this...may be exaclty how i get the "over" full skirts i have been dreaming of for....well forever.
This is so gorgeous! Both the pattern an the material used. So flattering!
I like skirts that don’t have loads of zippers or buttons because they can be more flexible in sizing and are more forgiving when it comes to weight fluctuations. For example, if you lose a couple pounds you may not have to buy a whole new skirt, you can sometimes just tie them a little tighter and it’s all the same! They’re also great for maternity clothes and plus sizes since elastic and hand-tied skirts adjust better to the body shape than a rigid zipper or fixed buttons! 💕💕
SO MUCH SWISH! I rushed out and bought the Cocoliquot pattern from Wildflower. I have a feeling i'm going to end up with several of these. Much love
Coquelicot
Please post it when you make it!
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! REMINDS ME OF THE BOTTOM HALF OF A KIMONO!!! ITS SO PRETTY😊
I love that formerly dresses naturally had pockets but not anymore for some reason.
I LOVE this skirt idea and i wish designs like this were available for purchase because its so adjustable and comfortable
It’s gorgeous and hangs so nicely. Something like this in a thick black satin would be stylish for decades.
I LOVE that so much! I would even wear just the back half sometimes with shorts or leggings or a short pencil skirt!
I am so in love with this! It's giving cute 50s housewife and I want one, the pockets are just perfect.
Love the way this longer length flatters your silhouette/proportions
It has such a beautiful silhouette too omg!
I absolutely love long skirts!
Holy cow!!!!
I NEED this skirt in my life?
😮😮OMG!! THIS IS BEYOND STUNNING!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!
I have no words on how beautiful that looks, the mechanism for it is so clever and I want one now.
Beautiful fit! I agree about the hardware - they're a pain. The skirt is practical.
Love the dog zooming past at the end! 😂🐾
okay but why does the back piece look so good by itself, like, I just want that back piece
Love it! I want one both in long and short versions!
The fabric is soooo good
This would be a killer drag race reveal outfit!
Not a skirt or dress person, but I LOVE THIS!!
Totally waiting for the tutorial because I cannot follow a pattern to save my life lol
You and me both!

It's like a corsette skirt... Fabulous!
I want to make these but like skorts - skirts with shorts remember those as a kid? Love this dress!
absolutely beautiful 😍 reminds me of Chinese hanfu!
This is beautiful!!
So slimming also.💃
The lace up was used in many patterns over the centuries. But the front with a shash is new look. Personally I love the the lacing on the front.
I love Hanfu dresses! There's a creator on here somewhere that shows off many different types of Hanfu *and* some neat ways to tie the laces
I have some Thai fisherman's trousers that fasten the same way. 👍
How? I have a few pairs and you just fold them over and tie them, and then fold the top down
What a cool idea. Will there be a full video about this construction?
There will! A two-parter coming out soon!
for the time being look at historical petticoats, "skirts" were made this way for centuries, althrou without time-consuming lacing, it was simply one string tied for back part and one string for front part
I love your idea for no zipper! Yes!!!
Old idea definitely still works!
I absolutely love it! I wish I could buy this somewhere!
I love this, but as a seamstress there is no way this is easier than installing a zipper 😂
Pockets!!! I love this idea 🤩
The best thing is that it will feel tailored to you even if you fluctuate in size
I would so love a pattern for this
What a beautiful pattern! I love it! The style is very similar to traditional Japanese Hakama. (Floofy pants worn for horseback riding and commonly part of a kendo gi. The Chinese counterparts are called Kù)
YES! LOVE this concept!!
Omg i would need a dozen of these in different patterns😆😆😆 i love this so much
Would pants be able to be made this way?
Absolutely! It's something I definitely want to experiment with!
i love this! I want to get into more skirts and dresses especially those that have a vintage feel to it
I know my mom would have loved this pattern and made many of these. Bravo!
Looks great! And yes it does resemble some historical skirt patterns which makes it easy to adjust for size and leave room to access under layers and pockets, which used to be tied on separately under your skirt
Love this skirt! Beautiful! ❤❤❤
It does look nice and adjustable
It is! this is how a lot of folk dresses and skirts are
JUST GORGEOUS ❤❤❤
My mother had one like that in thr 70’s but without the laces. It had ties in front and back.
Omgggg I would buy (or make who knows) that, a shorter version, so many colours it’s just PERFECT.
THAT IS GORGEOUS!!!
I bet it looks AMAZING when you twirl!!! 🩷🩷🩷
