In the UK, for one, the media has been atrocious. It is often more about drama and inflaming outrage for profit rather than informing and promoting debate. So this seems a little disingenuous.

The press should feel free and safe to report and comment on all issues. Press shapes our understanding of different people and countries and ideologies, which is a very powerful medium besides the education system. Nevertheless, we should be aware that the press always has a political stance and ideology, prioritising national interest or the interest of its funder. Don't just listen to what they say, try to find out yourself online or from other sources what really happen before and after that report, especially when the press is talking about foreign issues. Sometimes you can see that the press is
visionary and sightful indeed, but sometimes you will find that the press is naive, lying and distorting the context. Freedom is important but not absolute, it requires some control and different countries have different ways of control, some through removing your existence on the Internet and making your get fired by accusing you online and publicly for violating the "political correctness" (eliminating your influence), like that in developed countries, while some through violence or prosecution, like that in many developing countries. I think we have to be practical towards press freedom, there is no "ideal" in the real world.

Freedom of the press is of course important, but journalists have a very inflated view of themselves. They act like they're troops or something. You don't get points merely for opposing a government and while assassination is beyond the pale, politicians have a right to take legal action if they genuinely feel defamed. It's not like journalists never get a story wrong.

Yes but more and more right wing leaders are being elected lately and in general the entire world is backsliding, I mean people like Putin don't even care anymore about pretending that they're for democracy they're clearly not they just want to silence the press (Russia literally cut off every news Media outlet other than the ones they can control and only let them then tell their own narrative) and this whole thing about Journalists getting stories wrong is a bit dumb because yes of course that happens but those cases are the vast minority I mean look at it like this if you go into a factory there will always be some goods that can't be sold because they had a production error but 98% are completely fine but would you want to shut down the entire factory just because very rarely and only occasionally it gets something wrong? I feel like everybody's just so focused on condemning the press because again we're backsliding and going further away from democracy so yeeeah

I knew it that the video is going to be about India and the journalist. There is no mention of US or any European nation. Simply added one more country for 5 mins. The index has a lot of questions which of-course are not in the publix domain. The current list is the most funniest as well, India is worst than Kazakhstan (122), somalia (140), Turkey (149) and Pakistan is even worse than Afghanistan which as Taliban regime. Wow what a ranking.
More over why are journalists engaged with political leaders to get news or to make some goodwill. The ED case against Indian journalist is regarding the foreign currency she received from NGOs. Why was it not clarified in the video. This is how media is today, just give the people what is sellable. Not every journalist is bad but that doesn't make everyone saint either, Just like this video.
I would love to rant more but for the comments I made I would get blasted by everyone.

The constitutionally protected "freedom of the press" is simply the "freedom of speech." Nothing more or less.
It is a protected activity, not a protected class of citizen. Neither is it an elevated authority, prerogative or exemption from the rule of law.
If a thief breaks into your house looking for jewels, or a reporter breaks into your house looking for a story, guess what: breaking-and-entering is a crime and both are criminals. A press card is no "Get out of jail for free card" for the reporter.
If a reporter corners you on the street, plying you with questions, the reporter is just a Joe Shmo like any other, with no power, no office, no legal prerogative, to make you pay him so much as enough attention to burp at him.
The very same "freedom of speech" that extrapolates logically to the "freedom of the press" (i.e., the freedom to publish your "speech") is OUR freedom, collectively, no more and no less than that of the putative "fourth estate." It is the freedom to speak, to write, to post, to comment, to find out by every legal means, to reveal and expose. No reporter or journalist enjoys any greater or lesser freedom by dint of his/her profession than we all do in that respect.
Law-enforcement agencies, judges, legislatures all enjoy special powers of subpoena, arrest, incarceration. There are times when journalists seem delusionally to believe their "power of the press" approaches that kind of coercive power, as if "I'm a reporter!" means "So you HAVE to answer me!" It's an utter delusion.
Freedom of speech works both ways: the freedom to say what you want and the freedom to say absolutely nothing when you want, and say it (i.e., nothing) to anybody you want. Interestingly, that freedom even encompasses those who've actually been lawfully arrested and charged with crimes: the freedom to be silent.
Isn't it ironic how the very freedom we insist upon for those accused of real crimes seems at times to be completely forgotten when the "mob" clamors for this or that person to 'fess up, to answer questions, to intimately reveal what they have done, felt, thought, wanted, intended, all of course fueled by the profit-motive as the news-entertainment-industry pushes the scandal du jour to keep the ratings up? Yes, quite ironic. Mass mania fueled by mass amnesia: "Rights? What rights? The public has a right to know!"
As I said above, the "freedom of the press" is a protected activity, not a protected class of citizen. In our suddenly cyber-transformed, social-media-pervaded world the meaning of that freedom, the freedom of that ACTIVITY, takes on more significance, and need of crystal-clear definition, than EVER BEFORE. Because, in fact, we are all, all of us who comment, post, react, discuss, debate, argue, now engaged in that very same activity, i.e., "the press," the printed word, and fall under that constitutionally protected freedom as much as anybody calling themselves "reporters/journalists" ever did.
The Founding Fathers couldn't have anticipated our computer age and social media. Which is why it's so astonishing how the broad principle of freedom that they enshrined in the constitution so well encompasses the "press" that we have all, to some extent, now become.
    Press on.
    🙂

What the Economist means by "press freedom"... is whoever peddles the Economist's politics. if you disagree with the Economist's positions on issues, especially international issues, you are framed as authoritarian and against freedom of the press. Amazing how every news outlet exactly matches the politics and interests of its ownership. I'm sure that's a coincidence.
Freedom of speech doesn't just apply to those that frame themselves as "journalists". It's supposed to apply to everyone... including the critics of some of the glorified bloggers that self-righteously act like they can't be dramatically wrong about things just because they claim to be "journalists"
Freedom of speech is important but so is freedom from slander and libel. When some of the unaccountable priest-class that today frame their politics as "human rights" and "journalism" slander individuals, companies and institutions... they should be sued for it just like anyone else that behaves like that.

"Many journalists think that it is authoritarian to silence or censor them, but perfectly ok to silence or censor those of a different profession."
      Exactly..
There are instances where censorship is appropriate (e.g. unsubstantiated slander to reputation which can harm people's livelihoods and relationships) . Unfortunately many "journalists' want a special set of rules for themselves so they can say whatever they wish to harm whomever they wish without accountability.
So-called "Journalism" amounts to a form of blogging before there was blogging. They should face lawsuits like everyone else when they cross the line into slander. . If they did nothing wrong, they can countersue for damages too. And they should also face criticism just like other people face criticism
In short... "Journalists" should have equal rights, not special rights when it comes to free speech. By making it just as easy to sue "journalists" as anyone else, it will not only help with truthful reporting but even civility. It will force them to be careful that their words are true or face consequences for them.

Press Freedom is important yes always has been. But the REAL problem of our age is Press Quality.
More accurately the diminishing press professionalism. Because I constantly see biased overly idiological reporting. Always given "the progressive narrative" e.g. the strategy we're spoon fed. "We must support the current thing" (that's a pun btw for those in the know)

    • @mydogsbutler
      @mydogsbutler 2 роки тому +1

It's both left and right "journalists'" that act like an unaccountable priest class. All most "journalism" represents today is just some front whatever ownership supports. That's exactly why Fox is right. And CNN is left.
Everyone has a right to their politics but that's not the same thing as actual journalism. Objective journalism by necessarily must be politically neutral. Report facts and figures not sneak in ownership's politics into reporting narratives. I have yet to see a single major news source that behaves like this. Not one. Whether left or right they use alleged "journalism" to push their politics, their economic interests, and sometimes even nationalist/ethnic interests.
the best news source... listen to news sources with opposing interests. That's the only way to get a more complete picture of what's going on. If one only listens to only one's side... confirmation bias.
