I was there. At a place called Chat Noir in Oslo, 1970. Garys first concert in Norway, and my first live concert with Gary. Since then I've lost count. His autobiography, "Learning to listen" is priceless; highly recommended!
Title: Gary Burton Kvartett på Chat Noir TV: NRK1 Recorded At: Chat Noir, Oslo 22/10/1970 Tracklist: Good Citizen Swallow Green Mountains Henniger Flats And On The Third Day June The 15th 1967 Band: Gary Burton - vibes David Pritchard - guitar Steve Swallow - bass Bill Goodwin - drums
Looks like Steve Swallow is playing an early 1960's Gibson EB-2 bass into a post-1967 Ampeg B15N amp. It seems most of the EB-2 basses only had a single neck pickup, whereas this one also has a bridge pickup. The neck pickup looks stock, but not sure about the bridge pickup. Looks a bit like a mini humbucker. Great bass tone. Swallow is a genius. Dave Pritchard is playing a Gibson ES-175D, and if the tail piece is original, it would date to pre-1957. I reached out to Mr. Prichard via his website to inquire about his amp and he was kind enough to respond - it is an early solid state Standell Artist, driving a 12" JBL housed in a rare Fender auxiliary cabinet. He also confirmed that the ES-175 was a 50's-era model. (Thanks Dave!) This is the first time I have heard Mr. Pritchard. Great tone, great lines, great phrasing. What a great guitarist! Very cool concert! So glad I found this. Thanks for posting it!
Bill Goodwin, drums Steve Swallow, bass Gary Burton, vibes Dave Pritchard, electric guitar Probably recorded between 1969 and 1972. Thanks for sharing this gem
+tecredos -The guitar player is Dave Pritchard, not Mick Goodrick. But for the time period which this was recorded,,,, well, Mick Goodrick would be a good guess! ;-)
This is unbelievable. These guys were sooo far ahead of their time, fully conceived way before the technology we all rely on now was possible. And Gary making it happen on the vibes sonically in an electric band...just completely nuts.
Opening with the Larry Coryell composition Good Citizen Swallow. I took a lesson some years ago with David Pritchard. I knew he was well versed in the Coryell stuff, but didn't know he had worked with these guys. Great discovery!
I was thinking maybe 69 or 70 era...Manfred Eiicher was probably getting ready to sign them.. The ECM of now is so lacking in energy..those glory days of ECM are sadly past...my brother would be sad how far ECM has slipped into the sublime....
19:45 to 26:00 piece reminiscent of Tim Buckley's Love From Room 109 at the Islander on Happy Sad (1969) with David Friedman on vibraphone. Anybody know the title - On the Third Day by Michael Gibbs if I heard Burton's acknowledgement correctly? Long time fan of GB (and the entire ECM gang). This lightened a stay-in-place Monday.

J’ai eu le privilège de voir Gary Burton live une fois dans ma vie il y a de cela 40 ans et je ne l’oublierai jamais!

Arguably an EB-2D , featuring a mini hb in bridge position.

Thanks for posting this very rare GEM.
Thank you for this! Just read Gary Burton's excellent and entertaining autobiography and now I'm loving these beautiful historic videos.

Burton's improvisational landscape knows no limit
Steve Swallow playing a semi-hollow electric bass guitar!
EgyptianMinor I know werid?
@@andorrasrevenge1683 I thought he was already playing a solid body electric bass by then, but I guess that was a bit later.
When was this?
Gary Burton must have been in Norway many times? I think I saw him in Club 7 in the 70ties.......
I also saw (and heard) him in Club7 in the seventies...
so handsome
Nice!
Wow, I didn't know about Steve Swalow... having long hair ;)
Do you have the 2nd part of the concert?
