I totally agree with you. It's a shame Kyle and Cierra have to listen to the naysayers constantly. They are an amazing young couple!! I am 69 years old and they have taught me a lot!!
You are never stupid it is brilliant to try and start gardening there's always a LEARNING CURVE!!! You are very SMART for trying to grow a garden with the lack of food coming up!!! Trust me when you plant seedlings they will grow with sun, water and LOVE!!! ONLY thing is you will have to build a 7 foot high fencing around your garden to keep the deer OUT lolol. It's called SPRING FEAVER lolol. I love love love what Skeeter was doing with the chickens and he was sooooo gentle unreal for sure this is a first time I have ever seen a dog make sure ALL the chickens get the chance at bread bites. How KEWL that was a special kiss on his forehead to Skeeter. I have a golden retriever and he is so special they have a wonderful demeanor and are so gentle but...he does have his wild times lol. God's blessings to you all.
Hey Kyle! Just a quick note to let you know that I love your channel! In particular I love your commentaries. Please don't change the way you do things or the way you explain them. The cabin must be giving you a lot of self satisfaction because it is just perfect!! The yard is starting to look like a "yard" too. Keep up the good work! I am as always looking forward to your next video.
It sounds like a busy year coming. One comment - if the materials are too expensive to buy all that you need, just buy what you can, and gradually you will build up enough to do it. It is like a lay-away in a store. I have done that so many times and it is surprising how it all adds up and before you know it you have done the job. Be safe and worm.
You're right. Feeding birds is expensive. Mind you, they also love the scraps of leftover food. The hadedahs eat anything. Like you say the birds 🐦 eat better than we do. So do our dogs 🐕. But the joy of watching them fill their tums is so relaxing. In Winter the fruit birds add a lot to the budget. So many of them. Hope your veggie garden works out and really enjoy your cabin and set up. Good luck and much enjoyment in your adventures. You're a special family. Cheers 🍻
My very large log cabin in northern Minnesota built in 1924 using logs from my property has been sitting on logs and lake rock piers for the whole time. Your piers are many times better.
Kyle I just enjoy watching an ambitious couple that have done what you have done. Your may make mistakes but I don't think it will slow you two down. I'm sure your parents are proud.
I lived in Alaska and MN for many years and had a garden every year. Leeks, green onions, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, salad greens, peas, determinate tomatoes (ripen all at once) which are developed for cool summers (such as Subarctic 25), rhubarb, red and black currants, blueberries and raspberries will all do well where you live. Strawberries will grow if you get the alpine varieties (such as Sparkle) and protect them from birds and chickens. If you have any problems with aphids, do not grow brussels sprouts. The aphids will be in every layer to the core and you will have to eat them along with the brussels sprouts. (Been there, done that.) You must build a sturdy fence around your garden. Chickens and deer will eat all your salad greens and peas. Moose will eat all your cabbage, broccoli and kohlrabi for sure. Birds will eat your berries. In my opinion, the best seeds and plants for northern climates come from Johnny's Selected Seeds based in Maine. Hope this helps.
Good to finally see you in a pair of Muck boots. I have the same ones and I use them for everything in the winter snow season. My foundation for my cabin is done the same as yours. My cabin was also built the same way yours was and aside from window placement, our cabins look the same. I've had mine for 15yrs now and the foundation hasn't given me any issue at all. Also - I have a 30' sand point myself in my shed that I just did last summer up here in the Adirondack Mts of Upstate NY. It wasn't easy to do and took three different spots and some wasted pipe and three well points before we hit water. The first two spots I could only get down 22' but the third finally made it. It works well but of course I would prefer a dug well. If you manage to hit water which hopefully you do it will be a day you'll always remember. What a feeling it is. -good luck
Just a suggestion, don't worry what haters say. I watch quite a few homestead videos, and I'm subbed to a few, like yours and Cierra's. I've noticed most negative comments sadly, come from people that have no idea what they are talking about. Forests that are managed are much healthier. It's your channel, no need to apologize for no reason.
Hey I'm a market gardener/farmer as a profession so I can give you a few tips: You need to get some heat to get stuff to reliably germinate. If you keep a really good eye on them (check twice a day), keep them next to the woodstove at a distance you think will keep them 70-80F. As soon as you see something peak above the soil, move them to the window. You're not going to get enough light from that window but for a few plants it could be fine, they are going to get leggy. A future project might be a cold frame? Everyone gets really excited about gardening this time of the year and then forgets to keep sowing in succession throughout the summer. In your climate especially, it is a lot easier to continue sowing the majority of stuff (besides stuff that stays in the ground all season) into april-may-june), and for greens july-august. What happens to every gardener is that they sow a bunch of stuff this time of the year and april and have a massive overabundance in july/august, but because they forget to keep sowing stuff, they have nothing from september-november when its perfectly possible to have lots of fresh produce. And the biggest tip for starting a garden is have confidence! Its in your genes to grow stuff, many of your ancestors did it to feed themselves or you wouldn't be here. People like to make it more complicated than it is, but put some seeds in the ground and give them the bare minimum of care (fertility, water, weeds) and they will do just fine. Don't overworry and have fun plants grow on their own we just create the conditions for them to have a shot and they do the rest!
Kyle, my husband and I love your content. We have a pretty extensive list of UA-camr's we watch daily and not one of those channels have stayed true to their original vision for their channel, so please continue what you guys are doing. By nature, I believe we're all creatures of habit and routine, so it just makes sense that watching others daily routines intrigues us. Look forward to the next video and btw, our Maltese, Bella adores Skeeter.
Ref: adding a well. I recommend going to two UA-cam channels. This couple has built several cabins off grid and at least two wells by themselves...all on video. They love to teach....and they're cool as heck! Both of them were in the show Alone....so you know they have to be knowledgeable! I think you'll really enjoy them. Her channel is Girl in the Woods and his channel is Bushradical. Stay safe!!
I don't live in my off grid home during winter, return in 2 weeks, looking forward to that. My goal is to live there all year round. I have to work out the inside shower system.
Like always a good video Kyle! Your off grid energy generation and use is very interesting . Your well is also very interesting, hand punching the well is worth a try! The financial gain is worth the possible set back for sure. All your priorities sound right on! Looking forward to you and Cierra's videos. Finally, the people who are negative or critical of how you do things are in their moms basement eating her food and turning up her thermostat, and don't have a clue what it's like to be self sufficient! Don't give them a second thought. 🌲
I like seeing your videos all the time there's something I like about your guys videos inspires me a lot and I'm just waiting for more videos all the time,
I like poplar, they get beutiful colors in the autumn, they have a nice sound in the wind and where I am from, there were very few of them, so we had no problem with them taken over. And for wood, we only used birch, that is the wood-type that burn longest. You are beginning to get a nice homestead. Thank you for nice videos. I like young couple that is working and no afraid of hard work. I/we grew up like that and we live longest.👍👍
Don't worry about the idiots that complain there just there to moan ,love your videos keep them coming, just remember when you plant out your seedling don't do it to early wait for the chance of frost to clear.
I commend your efforts, commitment and attitude Kyle. Here is an idea for you that I have been working on for 20 years, an indoor/outdoor pantry so to speak. Indoor Pantry = You grow food for you and your domestic animals (chickens, pigs, turkey's etc.) Outdoor Pantry = You grow food and create shelter spots for wild animals i.e. (food plots) that will attract and hold wild animals which equals MEAT So, as you plan out your property think of how you can create a FOOD OASIS for you and the wild animals in your area by planting perennials that will attract and feed deer, turkey, grouse, rabbits etc.
Always good watching your videos! Reminds me of things I wanted to do when I was your age. I went down the "ordinary" path and worked for the benefit of the employers. Now that I'm 55 and disabled, I have the time to do some of the things I missed out on. I can't do things like I used to, but I still try. Nice seeing the chickens being happy and healthy. I'm going to try a garden this year, maybe. I'll be going through a refresher course on that! Always had a garden at home and grandma's house. That was almost 40 years ago! lol! Enjoy life while you are young! Never know what will happen tomorrow. Anything you put on your videos, I'll watch! Keeps me going! Enjoy life, but don't overdo it!
Idea- maybe pound that standpoint from inside the house so you don’t have to go outside to get water. I saw someone in Alaska do it that way and it worked for them.
Hi Kyle, consider adding to your list of projects -- DIY pretty darn cheap geodomes with wood or metal struts, DIY wind turbines as an added power source, and a DIY tripod for help in well pounding. Love your stuff!
Tip for water in the chicken coop. You can pile a water bucket with snow. They will eat it for their water. They also really enjoy it and sometimes you will find they prefer to peck at it even when their water isn’t frozen. I got that from another channel that lives in Alaska. We always open ranged our chickens (protective fencing for night) and ducks even in the winter they had access to outside so I never noticed if they ate snow or not. Also had a warmer in their outside water tank (ducks). We kept a flock of about 80 chickens and 30 ducks. They are really funny to watch play in the snow (when temps aren’t too low) if you guys even get a good fence up it’s worth the entertainment.
Spring & Sumer weather exists almost everywhere; however, snow ❄️ exists only in certain area for a limited time of year. Therefore, I prefer watching your channel during the snowy season… just my preference. 😇😊
You are a talented young fella with a great work ethic. I'm guessing your dad [who is quite funny] and grand dad instilled that in you and good on them. I was a carpenter for 30 years and I must say, I am impressed with what you do on this channel. I have learned a couple of things myself. The only thing I would have done different is really seal up the window/door openings. A couple of pieces of tar paper wrapped around the openings and taped off. Then I would have put metal flashing above every window and the door and taped that to the walls. Then the siding goes on. I however live in British Columbia, Canada and snow loads/rain are a concern. We also have to sheet our walls and roofs in houses. The fact that you are starting out life with a home built by your hands is amazing. I find Skeeter quite amusing too. My bro had a Springer but he was smaller, always had his nose to the ground. He would often trip over his own ears cuz his legs were so short, lol. Its so nice to watch all your projects and how independent you are. I'm looking forward to whatever else you post. Cheers.
You will likely learn far more from your gardening “mistakes” than you will from advice given 😊. Many zones and microclimates within them….you’ll figure it out just fine. It’s a never ending learning process.
I put my plant trays on top of the fridge, and once the plants sprout, I add a fluorescent lamp. Evidently the fridge top generates a bit of heat to help things along.
Asparagus will take a LONG time to come up so don't give up on them. Broccoli is an excellent cool weather crop, peppers will be a challenge right now. I live in the next county east of you and have successfully used Aluminum foil behind my seed trays to help reflect more light. Have fun and keep trying! That's what I've done for over 40 years. Still learning, still having fun!
If you’re doing covered garden beds make sure to put metal mesh underneath to keep the rodents away from eating roots from below and working their way up from below 👍
If you are having trouble sprouting the paper towel method works pretty well put a damp paper towel in a sandwich bag with seeds on it in a warm place. I got to say the place is coming right along. It definitely is relaxing hearing that crackling fire from the wood stove.
I am really enjoying your videos and following along with your journey. You know what an experienced gardener loves? Seeing the next generation interested in learning and giving it a go! You will learn something new every year, and every year you will adjust accordingly. Enjoy the process. Cheers from Canada!
Our 5yr. Old granddaughter showed an interest in gardening and I would buy her some flowers. As she got older I gave her money so that she could pick out her own plants/seeds. She is almost 26yrs old and still enjoys gardening.
Thank you Kyle for sharing your daily life Enjoy watching you do all your daily feedings Chickens are so beautiful Skeeter cute as ever Looks like you got a garden starting My you will be busy when snow goes away Keep videos coming you share so much info it is interesting and even in urban living you can use generators Take care and see you Cierra and Skeeter in next video
Great job, Kyle! Appreciate your honesty ("got roasted" haha). Must be a great product if you can stand behind it. All the best for the Spring mate. Looking forward to more videos. Stay safe. Cheers.
Yeah, you need a warming pad, and grow lights. Stuff may or may not sprout as is. Start outdoor plant seeds about 6 weeks before outdoor planting. Plant seeds of cold tolerant crops when soil warm enough to work. Radishes, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, they'll know when to sprout.
Kyle don't listen to the haters I REALLY ENJOY WATCHING your WONDERFUL VIDEOS people who judge you the reason is because they are jealous of you just be happy and KEEP on sending us your real fans your WONDERFUL VIDEOS
Love your channel Everything u do is well planned and thought out. Your thoughts on solar is off the charts the other solar energy systems can be quite expensive. As for feeding the animals perhaps a auto feeder set for certain times will save on the amounts. Look forward to more that you Share. God bless be safe stay warm and healthy. Jim
Any pepper plants have to be planted close together or they don't bare good fruit. Your plants need warmth and grow lights. I know you watch Boss of the Swamp and watch his video of his greenhouse and how he starts his plants. Wow you have a lot on your plate for the spring, summer, fall, can't wait. Be Blessed. 😊🇺🇲
Glad to hear the Eco Flow is doing well. I have a Bluetti EB55 on the way to get the feet wet a bit. Mostly gadgets, radios, battery recharges and what not.
Kyle, your videos are amazing. Just watching you doing things or just talking to us is good enough for me. Also, I don't normally like to give unsolicited advice, but if companies are asking to partner with you, you might want to really consider it. You don't know if someone could benefit from it; if you want to share, please do so because UA-cam is a job. You might introduce something to people who may need those things. I believe that if you can touch even one person with your videos or with your potential partnerships, that's a good thing. Please take care and be safe. God bless you, Cierra, Skeeter, and your families. 🙏
Kyle, you are so diplomatic in “forewarning” those viewers who were being cranky about your last Ecoflow review videos. I mean, really? You’re absolutely right, they can choose not to watch if it bothers them. You have every right to do those videos and I’m glad you did! Even though I live in the city, and probably will never have a reason to use an Ecoflow, I still watched your reviews all the way through because that’s how much I support you and your channel. Emphasis on “your” channel! And on another note, you totally crack me up… “Polishing a turd” 😂 Oh, and I really liked how at the end of your video you talked about your plans for the coming year. Really fun! I look forward to watching all of it! Kudos to you Kyle! 👍🏼
If you remember those Sandy videos, many in the city were looking for gennys to recharge their phones, standing on the sidewalk borrowing a stranger's to do it. Never say never to a blackout, say prepared. A low temp rating sleeping bag, a camp stove (use safely with plenty of ventilation) and some water storage containers are also sound investments.
I just started my seeds Kyle. I start my asparagus right into the ground. I have a green house I set up in my home with a grow light. I have tomatoes, different types of peppers, pickling cucumbers, green beans I start right in my garden, spaghetti squash. I do a lot of canning. Saves at the store.
You're seeds should germinate if they're protected from frost. You should look into cold frames. You're seedlings should be protected from frost in them until it's warm enough to plant out. You'll be able to build them no problem. I enjoy your video content very much so ignore the haters.
Ignore the roasts, they don't have to watch and you don't have to listen. You keep doing what you're doing. It's your life and channel and you're doing great.
Kyle don't listen to the naysayers. You make a amazing video each and every time.
Soil test that's a cheap must.
You are a joy for us to watch and we look forward to every single video. 🌸
This is my favorite channel!
Polishing a turd...said right when I took a drink...which is now all over my monitor...LOL...thanks for that laugh!!! Really love your videos!!!
Yeah...I laughed too...what a "mental" picture 😆
Bro, I don't care what you show on your channel, as long as Skeeter is in the vid. I love that little guy.
Skeeter chillin with the chickens is so funny lmao
Kyle! Thanks for taking the time and effort to share Your lifestyle. Appreciate that You keep it real! Love it and Your family!
Kyle, look into the camera when u talk to us viewers

Thank u for showing others giving them hope
Make sure you make a video when you torch the old wood shed! 🤣👍🏼

Ecoflow is an awesome product. Can't wait. You are doing great. Keep up the interesting vlog. Thanks for sharing
The feeling of living in a place with snow is wonderful, the experience is very interesting

Keep up the good videos , having a garden is so rewarding.
Full on when spring arrives looking forward to it plus another good video 👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇦🇺🇦
You are very wise for your age ! No bs, firm and straight forward ! Love the video's
Keep doing what your doing...LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!!!
You both are a joy...you will see sprigs....No worries! Just enjoy the dirt:-)
Too hell with the critic’s Kyle! What you’re doing is working for you! Doesn’t matter what others think!
Have you ever thought about putting a skirting around the cabin? To keep the wind and cold air from under the cabin.
That’s a great idea!

Love the Trailer Park Boys reference....love your videos.
Cut them now and leave the 3 foot of stump for leverage when pulling them.......you can pull smaller stumps easier with something to push or pull on
Good stuff. I love your videos and the fact that y’all don’t curse!

This was a good video. Don't listen to the complainers they're just jealous. You just keep doing what you're doing.
Very Cool Guys. Looking forward to the next 5 months of watching in the nice weather.

Great job Kyle and Cierra! Just keep doing what you do. You do a great job! 🇨🇦
Don't apologize,,,, it's your property !
Keep up the great work, Kyle. We love watching your videos, and EcoFlow rocks!
I feed the wild animals too, and you are right, its expensive. But the pics of deer i got on my trial cams make it worth it.
I put my plant trays on top of the fridge, and once the plants sprout, I add a fluorescent lamp. Evidently the fridge top generates a bit of heat to help things along.
it is your channel, I don't care if you do a review, i will still watch them
Awesome as always! 👍😎🇨🇦🐾🌲🌞
I watch anything you put out, including sponsorship videos. 🙏🏼😊
If you are having trouble sprouting the paper towel method works pretty well put a damp paper towel in a sandwich bag with seeds on it in a warm place. I got to say the place is coming right along. It definitely is relaxing hearing that crackling fire from the wood stove.
👍again...wishing you all the best for your future projects especially the well 🙏
I am really enjoying your videos and following along with your journey.
@@coolgrandma4952 That is how I started... my grandparent's garden was always my happy place and when I garden, that is what I remember
Thank you Kyle for sharing your daily life
Enjoy watching you do all your daily feedings
Chickens are so beautiful
Skeeter cute as ever
Looks like you got a garden starting
My you will be busy when snow goes away
Keep videos coming
you share so much info it is interesting and even in urban living you can use generators
Take care and see you Cierra and Skeeter in next video
We are all waiting for spring and sunshine 🌞 It has been a very rough winter.
Good luck with your garden, you are right, jump in and you will learn as you go along. The first year will be a great learning season!
Hay if you got enough maple trees there’s a free food for ya and it’s good! Love the videos keep them coming!
Thanks Ray!
Dont forget to fertilize!!
Be Blessed. 😊🇺🇲
I'm originally from Mpls. Love your gone up north sign. "Where are you going? Up north. Love it!
Glad to hear the Eco Flow is doing well. I have a Bluetti EB55 on the way to get the feet wet a bit. Mostly gadgets, radios, battery recharges and what not.
Some great pl@ns. Looking forward to,watching. Be well, and stay safe.
It's awesome of you to feed the wild animals. Deer are beautiful
Good video. Wandering around the place sharing what you’re up to.
Great video, enjoy seeing both of you and skeeter, keep up the good work, nice job on everything
Not boring at all!
You're seeds should germinate if they're protected from frost. You should look into cold frames. You're seedlings should be protected from frost in them until it's warm enough to plant out. You'll be able to build them no problem. I enjoy your video content very much so ignore the haters.
Loved the shoutout to trailer park boys! I’m addicted to that stupid show LOL
Keep talking to us Kyle love that new well👍
