@@stephentraversart That I believe! Though I wouldn't say no to a trip to Sydney even in summer.... I'm in northern Germany: we're at -5 to 7° Celsius currently, with the occasional winter storm making it feel more chill. I've tried sketching yesterday for the 1st time since discovering urban sketching and it was way too cold. 🥶 I had to take photos instead
@@stephentraversart I went sketching today with a local group for the 1st time: it was cloudy and 4° Celsius. Wearing warm winter clothing it was mostly okay, but my hands were freezing after 2.5 hours 🥶 I'm very ready for double digits and sunnier weather! I could use a few of your tips that helped me with perspective 👍🏻 My group was pretty astonished when I revealed that I was a beginner at urban sketching and drawing architecture.
This was an excellent tutorial and how I usually tackle similar scenes on location. I also find that if I close one eye when looking at the scene, that it takes away my depth perception and makes it easier to use this method.
Thanks Cherice. Actually, it was a really cheap $6 one I bought in a department store just before I videoed as I hadn’t had one left at home. It was 120 gsm though, I remember and a smoother surface than I usually draw on. 😀
Excellent video and sketch, Stephen. Very informative, as ever. I’d be content if I could even attain the standard of your five minute ‘bearing-finding’ sketch. 😀
@@stephentraversart 😂😂😂 Stephen, there’s as much distance between us on an atlas (I’m in Scotland) as there is in sketching! The chance of me sailing past you is inconceivable. 😵💫 But I’m happy to continue learning from you. 👍🏻🙏🏻
So Stephen do you ever use an easel I have been told time and time again to avoid drawing flat but it doesn't seem to affect your drawings. Great to see you drawing outside. I joined a plein air group. T o force myself to get out and sketch .
This one is a great tutorial! As you have explained a pen measure tip.I did occasionally before but until today I came cross your video which reaffirmed this tip works well. Thanks for your hard work, Stephen . Also what is the difference between drawing a real object and photo ? which one is more accurate? Thanks !
A photo is already 2D, so that’s an advantage, but it can have lens distortion affecting vertical lines near the edges and also loses depth perception. Drawing from reality has no copyright hassles. It’s really whatever you want to draw from. Check out my videos on creating a depth effect. 😀
Well, Stephen, I tried this one by myself . I mean drawing it against the photo without watching your drawing guide. The reason I did this way is to find out the difference between teacher and a student when they draw this picture. After I finish and compared mine drawing with yours , I could not help laughing . Before I draw this one , I followed your guide to draw another photo , the result is much better . So I need to practice a lot and also to learn from you step by step before I can draw independently. Thanks!
@@stephentraversart Thank you . Its just something I'm looking into right now . i appreciate all your feed back . I'm honestly not expecting any. You must be so busy
Hi you always refer to finding the picture on the your Community Page on UA-cam but getting there seems to elude me. Please send a link etc. Thanks a lot
This is something I’ve never tried to draw Waylon, so I don’t think I can. If you are Instagram, check the works of @joaopauloabergaria His drawings are with this and I really love them. Also on Insta, I think I saw a reel by @paulheaston where he showed how to do this, so if you want to search his page you might find it. All the best. 😀
I just love how you break everything down and give us meat and potatoes... so satisfyingly delicious to watch and learn!!
Great to hear it worked for you so much. Thanks
I’m binging on your videos. They are great.
Sydney Uni is beautiful.
That’s great to know Abi. Yes, there are many beautiful buildings there. Enjoy the videos and please tell your friends. 😀
Thank you very much God will keep you alive for this. wishing you long life because I know is hard for someone to reveal this secrets
Thank you for your kind words. Much appreciated 😀
please do more location drawing. great tutorial
I hope to Alex. Please stay tuned. 😀
Thank you so much for this excellent video series. I'm working to improve techniques, and I keep tripping over perspective. This series is brilliant.
Thanks for letting me know Felicia. This is always encouraging to hear. Please tell your friends who draw about my channel. That would help me. 😀
Please more exercises like this one! Extremely helpful!!!! Thank you 😊
That’s great to know Catia. I’ll do my best. 😀
Oh, I can’t wait to try this tip! Thank you!
Fantastic. You may start immediately!😆 Have fun.
Great hack for sketching on location! That'll be very helpful when it gets warm enough to do plein air.
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks. It’s too hot in Sydney for much location sketching right now. 😆

We’ve just finished an unusually cool summer. Not really going over the mid 30s. 😀

Yes. Makes it more 2D for us to draw 2D on the paper. Good point. 😀
This is amazing 🤩🤩
Thank you Kanika, that’s very kind. 😀
Super helpful! What brand sketchbook are you using?

The group is a great idea. I would never paint flat, but I do draw flat. Really, with the videoing, I have no choice, but I think I would anyway. 😀
