    As a amateur cello player and fellow who records local musicians, I was delighted by this wonderful video. Zelinka’s playing is so sensitive and beautiful, and the story of the recording and the Royers was so interesting. I’ve recorded with lesser ribbons and too love both the back/front directionality (I’ve had lots of hassles picking up unwanted colours from omnis and cardioids) and loved the ribbon’s silky high ends. Anyway, well done, so proud to have you in Canada and Ontario! And I have microphone envy too after hearing this! Would love to hear the tube Royers and the all tube path recording. A BIG THANKS TO YOU BOTH!

    It has such a beautiful sound. I got to use one of these as my university studies. Absolutely beautiful microphone, be careful not to give it phantom power though ;)

    For a MICROPHONE video you'd think the narration voice would sound a little better?

    let's talk about what a great cellist she is! feel like i've FINALLY found someone who plays the hallowed suites the way my teacher, who studied with Leonard Rose and Casals (i have his bowings in my Barenreiter edition!) taught me.
    Beautiful interpretation, beautiful Guarnerius ;) Thank you, Winona Zelenka! I am buying your CD for the AIFF quality.

      ear coloristic yes! I immediately went to the link provided in the information part of this posting and I bought two of her CDs, looking forward to getting them soon!
      Ribbons also give shape to the sound that's actual shape that is being performed by the performer, I have discussed this with one of the best ribbon technicians/makers and it’s kind of a mystery as to why it might be but I have a feeling it has to do with the architecture of the mic itself and the open air nature of the ribbon.
      Probably using overly strong neodium magnets will tend to damp the ribbon too much compared to Alnico magnets.

      I immediately went to the link provided and purchase two of her albums, one with piano which I hope it is recorded as well as this which is a super herb ribbon Mike/to your recording. It’s not trying to sound like condensers as far as I can tell and that philosophy is reflected in the explanation by this excellent recording engineer.

    This recording was made over 10 years ago now. I wonder if there's anything Ron Searles would do differently now, or use different equipment?

    wow.. Slowly converting to the idea of using ribbons on acoustics ( guitar for me) intead of sdc. This video is amazing.. so natural and beautiful. Its like you cant go back to condensors, they sound wrong after this. Listening to some clips of the Cd reease, which used the tube version 122V, i that think with the tube pres, it may have been to much. The SS versions on this vid sound better to me.

    Ribbon mics, the only 'real' mics! They capture not only the sound but the shape of the sounds, that's one reason why I crave "All-Ribbon" recordings!
    Too many are mixing condensers (over-bright and 2 dimensional in comparison) that cause a balance-war and usually mask the more delicate - realistic - highs of the ribbons!

      My whole studio is centered around my RCA ribbon mic collection. I have a 44bx (very rare early UK/US version), a 77dx, 2 sk-46's and 2 Varacoustics. Ribbon mics are KILLER! They make my U87 sound like a toy. A 77 or 44 on the cello would have embarrassed that Royer though.

      I would love to hear some of your recordings! It sounds like you would take great care with proper matching to preamps and such.
      I think the modern take on ribbon mics is suffering the sin of trying to sound more like the overly bright condensers of today. We have such a transparent signal path available to us these days that we just don't need the preemphasis we used to.
      If you have any "all ribbon" recordings to point me to, please feel free!

      I dunno. I can't find fault with the sound of this recording though, Full, rich, lush, with just just the right amount of transient detail...

    Beautiful playing on a wonderful instrument captured so well by just three mics.
    Just curious -- what was the spacing on these mics side-toside and front-to back?

    He said it was a *modified* Decca Tree.

    • @tiqueholl8899

      CelloProfessor Also figure of 8 pattern is so completely dead in the 360° off axis line of the mike that it is a relatively unique and beautiful way to record for rejection of unwanted sounds (and if you tilt the mics top away from the source, if possible, so that they are not facing the floor close to the mike and they’re facing the far dimension of the ceiling it also gives added dimension compared to what you would get otherwise, That is probably why you usually see them tilted in these matters in most photographs of classic use of the microphones).

    • @JiihaaS
      @JiihaaS 2 роки тому

      @@tiqueholl8899 I think the tilting might also have to do with the angle of the cello.

    netzocker18 netzocker18 Ehhhr... you can use what you want for a decca tree...
    and:
    you are wrong... the "true decca tree" is with three M50 Neumann... the are directional in high mids and highs! not "true" omnis

  • @gruzina

    Always rimember !!!
    first the instrument should sound amazing , only than choose the right mic for the job and a greater Mic Pre to amplify the sound that the mic capture.
    in todays home studio people forget this important things and think's that they can fix everything wrong that they have done during the recording session

  • @netzocker18
    @netzocker18 11 років тому +1

    a Decca Tree consist of 3 omnidirectional mics which is impossible with a classic ribbon mic
    please be more accurate in case of recording techniques
