What setup would you recommend for a String Quartett in a good room ? I have a TLM170R and 3 Pairs of KM184. Maybe some Spaced AB with an additional center mic? Or I was even thinking about trying something like two Decca trees - style - one closer and one further away(?) 😅 .. Or is this „too much“ ? Maybe just two ABs ? Thanks in advance !
Hi there! That’s a tough question and depends largely on the sound you desire. For something that’s close to what you’re hearing with your own ears, ORTF may be worth a try. Since you have enough mics, you might as well try (simultaneously) spaced AB for a wider image (be careful with mono compatibility) and/or XY for a more narrow image (with excellent mono compatibility). Or if you want a very direct sound (think “Eleanor Rigby”) you could try close miking each instrument - the TLM 170 may be best suited to the cello, perhaps set to wide cardioid. In any case, it’s probably good to record several options simultaneously and pick the best later on.
