Thanks for showing the weaving. I was making it a lot harder in my head than it needs to be, thinking I had to weave in special spaces like on the premade backings.
When you weave the rya on the loom, you have much more flexibility to choose the sett, how many strands to use for each knot, the length and the spacing of the weft threads. You can use different thickness or types of yarn, some fingering, some DK weight, some handspun, longer or shorter lengths of yarn in different sections, to create more 3 dimensional effects. A Rya is a perfect way to use up odd bits from your stash.
When I vistited my mumi/ grandmother in Finland in the 90's.. there were tapestry/ weaving machines in the shared basement where all the older ladies that lived in that building came together to weave.. You'd also see garden swings by most every apartment building where the elderly (and young) would sit together to chat..
it is a very good way to make a rug. Although the ghiordes knot is shown elsewhere on the internet, it would have been nice to see the way you weave the knot in a closer look. Thank you for this tutorial.
Sorry I had cancer a few years ago and wasn't able to weave for some time. I am doing better now so will try to make better closeup videos of the process.
+Виктория Дизайн I am weaving on a Snickeri 8 shaft countermarche loom - 1 meter wide. You can use any standard 4 shaft loom to weave a rya. The ground weave is a tabby. I will try at some point to take another closeup video of how the knots are made. It is difficult to get the camera angle right for this.
I made another short video that is a close-up view of tying the knots. It is not possible to change this video as I made this several years ago. ua-cam.com/video/FB1AnCGKnB8/v-deo.html
I think it's so clever how, when you are making the knots, your hand is in the way and the making of the knot, surely the point of the video, is entirely hidden. I'm sorry if this sounds a little sarcastic, but I would really like to have seen how you do it. It's a beautiful rug, but a very unsuccessful video.

I have a new appreciation for rugs
Awesome , and looks easy, I love it !
Can you make a video showing the making of the knot?

how are you tying the knots please
hello!! can you please tell me where you bought the hemp? thanks so much in advance
no, actually it's a Ghiordes knot. The rya yarn simply wraps around 2 warp threads.
Hello! Which model of the loom you are using in this video? What is the maximum width of the article work? Thank you!

I worked weaving material for neck ties when I was 15 years old. Looks easy but wasn't. My back and arms were killing me

yes sorry - my camera angle was wrong at the time. I have since done another one that shows the knot making more clearly.
Ugly color combination.
