Yep, also NO MORE STACKING BUFFS. and buffs are split into Ma and non-ma prefix buffs. So say goodbye to stacking Sukukaja on those enemies and making them miss every attack when its their turn.
Holy moly! Iron Pineapple! Was not expecting that. I got recommended this video because I watch a lot of Shin Megami Tensei stuff. Mythymoo and Iron Pineapple are the top tier in my mind when it comes to Dark Souls stuff. I now got my dose of SMT, Iron Pineapple and also a new channel to look at.
This, I think one of the reasons people dislike Persona 5 is just because they are tired of hearing 12 years olds call it the second coming of Jesus fucking Christ. It's soundtrack is good and fun but nothing legendary.

I love the smt series but I agree with most of his points. To me SMT 4 is a much better game, and it's not even close. I have no idea why the Fandom drools over nocturne the way they do. If I were to hazard a guess, most fans are probably just salty that the follow up ended up on a nintendo handheld but it doesn't change the fact that 4 is a much better game in nearly every aspect and specifically addressed the shortcomings of nocturne that were highlighted in this video.
My first SMT was SMT IV. The first boss fight was simply impossible that I thought it must be a scripted event where I have no choice but to lose. But then when I saw the game over screen... I knew that this JRPG won't tolerate weakness.

This comment right here ladies and gentlemen. Hopefully in the future that the Smt and Persona fanbases just merge as one into Megami Tensei/Megaten fans. That needs to happen now more than ever now with the realease of Smt 5 getting closer. Edit:I'm currently playing Nocturne HD on my switch, loving it so far. Okay 1. Spot on right here I hope that smt fans and persona fans can come together harmony and all that B. Does jack frost hang out with penguins up there
As someone who likes Nocturne, your criticisms are spot on. The game is definitely dated and a lot of the dungeons are just a pain in the ass. If anyone was trying to get into mainline SMT, I would definitely recommend 4 over Nocturne any day. Devil Survivor is another good spinoff that's a good middle ground between SMT and Persona in terms of having a character focused narrative, while still being darker in tone.
I got into mainline with nocturne. Though I wouldn't say I really got into it since the pain of lvling up and grinding for money was basically replaced with 2 areas where you can grind xp and money items. But I still do love the challenge that mainline brings and it's much fairer compared to persona.
I got into mainline with nocturne after playing persona 3 way back in the day and now follow both series on each separate release after having gone back and played all of them in both. (Some not to completion like p2 and strange journey) but I can say without a doubt between all personas and all smts nocturne just hits that right feel for story for me. It’s so metal what happens in nocturne especially if you do the true demon ending. Absolutely steamrolled through the hd remaster because of having buffs and debuffs on my demons at all times.
@@BoostedMonkey05 oh yeah, my comment wasn't to say that Nocturne can't be a starting point, it's still a great game with a lot to offer! The challenge and press turn system are some of the main draws for me. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series (assuming you've only played Nocturne)!
@@meitomiyazaki9848 Hell yeah, Nocturne is metal as hell and I will always love it for having that vibe. I think that the sort of grungy feel of nocturne combined with the overall design of the environments in the game is really something special even compared to other titles in the series.
@@Mephilis2123 I actually started with Persona 5 and I wanted another game where there was memorable monster designs that you can negotiate with and you can identify their weaknesses just by remembering what they look like. I've been playing P5 on Merciless as a tutorial for when I get to mainline, I can say for certain that it paid off.
Great video! I agree on the lonely feeling but that's actually a big draw for me: Nocturne succeeds so well at feeling lonely that I really get that post-apocalyptic feeling that a lot of other games with similar settings don't give me. I love the characters in Persona, but I also love the quiet dread and atmosphere of Nocturne.
Nocturne really does have a lot of aggravating parts ranging from the confusing dungeons to the random encounters, but in a weird way I feel like that adds to the game. The cruel and punishing world accompanies the loneliness of your journey to create such an epic and unforgettable experience for me, easily my favorite ps2 title and one of my favorite jrpgs of all time. I'm glad you tried it, even if you got frustrated at some points!
It's a hold over from smt 1 and 2 in that sense. The last time that the series would be like that. That said, complaining that a two decade old game is outdated in design feels silly. Of course it is.
I'm replaying Nocturne myself at the moment and it is extremely rare that a game makes me tell my TV to "fuck off, stupid asshole" followed by "now I am going to drop the fucking hammer on your ass" and concluded with "oh no he dodged I'm dead"
I witnessed too many people during the live chat for SMT 5 going "This looks like a persona rip-off" etc etc. A part of me hopes they were kidding, but a part of me know there were some who had to be serious.

No wonder the AAA games industry has become the most profitable entertainment industry in the world while simultaneously releasing more and more and more unfinished, over-monetized, broken games over and over year after year.
I can't really say I agree. Combat is just a part of Persona, but it's like 80% of SMT. If they're into Persona because because of the writing, they're not gonna like SMT.
@@thomaswood8405 I'd argue that SMT 3 has better writing than P5, and that's the most popular game in the series so... I don't know, personally I'm not too huge on these types of games (tried Dark Souls back in the 360/ps3 era, hated it, and a few years later beat DS2... it took me 6 months), meaning I'm not quite the elitist or anything, and I really liked SMT 3, but more specifically, the DDS duology is easily in my top 10. The jump from Persona to SMT is definitely doable if you're open minded (I did P4-3-5 -> DDS1&2 -> P1-2 -> SMT 3)
I do think, at least for me personally, what has lead to a lot of the animosity between "persona fans" and "smt fans" is that, along with the elitism of "go play a real smt game" from one side, there is the constant complaining about no new persona anytime any news of V comes up from the other. Its really annoying being someone who enjoys all parts of the overarching franchise, especially because its become such a meme that I actually can't talk about mainline with friends because every single time its just constant "oh you mean that persona rip off" while when I talk persona everyone is fully on board
Yeah, as someone who loves both SMT and Persona, I can definitely say that both fandoms are not perfect. The SMT community is filled with a bunch of elitists, and the persona community is normally filled with a bunch of people who hate SMT because “it’s not persona.” And that’s why I have a hard time suggesting SMT to people, especially persona fans. Even though I’m just genuinely suggesting a game that I think they would enjoy, I get called an elitist for just mentioning an SMT game. And then, if I say I love any of the modern persona games around SMT fans, I get shitted and told to a “play a real game like strange journey.” In conclusion, I hate the SMT and persona community.
Ah Nocturne. The game where every major boss fight can make you lose any self confidence you ever had. Where you have to constantly rethink strategies to match the tools the opponents throw at you... Or you just fuse the funny dead monk and basically never die ever again.
@Benji 64 a lot of it is a stereotype and a lot of it is true. people do act this way in the fandom but a lot of people are just frustrated by how annoying this shit can be, myself included. me, ive only played persona 2. i was going to play smt 4 but my 3ds is broken and i hate emulating. i tend to side with smt fans in this dispute, but i can appreciate the persona games for what they are. it's really just a long winded argument that doesn't look like its going to end any time soon.

@@Jawny00 Full disclosure, I don't exactly consider dark souls a jrpg. Nor am I qualified to have that discussion. I've never played a souls game. My main point is that video game genre discourse is dumb and horribly defined. I mean it's so bad that dmc and streets of rage would be considered different genres based off the camera, and nothing else.
SMT is pokemon but instead beating the monster half death, imprisoning them inside a ball and force them to fight to the death for you, you negotiate and asked them to join you instead .... Which game is the game about demons again?
I mean out of context it sounds bad but when you get to it. Pokemon is basically about humans taming super powered animals. Animals that get earthquaked while being paralyze AND CAN SURVIVE. Some of them have psychic powers and some can eat souls. Even god himself is one of these things. Is it really bad to say that keeping them in balls isnt a safety requirement?
To be fair, the "play a real SMT game" thing is more a bit of an in-joke with most of the hardcore fans of the series (especially over on reddit, which is exceedingly chill/self-deprecating typically). I'm sure there are some youtube comments that say that shit seriously, but yeah, I haven't really seen it said much otherwise. It's not my thing, but more power to the people who were able to enjoy Persona 5. It just means Atlus gets to do more cool stuff, and from what we're seeing of SMTV, they are more than following through so far. Edit: Props for buying that Digital Devil Story novel, lmao. Those are... something else.
If you have any interest in playing SMT related games, then I'd highly recommend playing the Digital Devil Saga duology. It fixes many of the issues that are in Nocturne, adds in much more written and spoken story and plot elements, major plot twists that keep you engaged, and arguably one of Shoji Meguro's best OSTs
DDS duology are the real dark souls of SMT in my book. DDS difficulty spikes wayy more than nocturne. It features some of the superbosses which will put any other SMT games to shame.
So, maybe a weird take, but for me, the constant bombardment of random encounters has a purpose in the early to mid-game stretch where it's meant to make you fearful for your life as it constantly drains your resources and forces you to consider if you can afford to explore further instead of returning to the healer for a resupply. Having said that, I will admit that especially on team setups that don't use magic much in random encounters, even around the time you run into Matador, you can start to feel like they are kinda too easy and too common, therefore being really annoying. Additionally, it also feels like a thematic decision in that the constant encounter rate helps to build this idea that Demifiend and most SMT protags live lives defined by constant battle and with no rest for them until or even after their job is done.
@@ED-gw9rg Frankly there are other Atlus titles that have perceptionally high encounter rates like Persona 1 and I think Smt if. I don't think it was a thematic choice but more something that was constantly tweaked, until overworld enemies became the norm. Most SMT titles do have an ability called Estoma tho, which allows you to turn off the encounters until you go into a different area. In nocturne it lowers the encounter rate however.
To be honest, the reason I didn't really like playing Persona 4 is because it felt like too much like actually having friends, which probably says more about me than it does about the game. I preferred the dungeon-crawling parts over the social-sim aspect.
SMT is like that candy you've never tasted and once you do all the other candies taste not as good. The turn base combat of SMT tucks me in at night and gives me a goodnight kiss.
i very much disagre that the story gets uninteresting after the beginning. in this game all the minor characters actually have interesting stuff to say an flesh out the world and story (wich isn't often the case in other rpgs). sure the story is not thrown in your face but the minimal style adds to the mystery and atmosphere imo.
indeed! there are many aspects of story and lore thrown in the world and characters and how they interact, every one of them is fleshed out because the series knows that they are limited, more than anyone gives it credit for but i guess thats what happens when you play persona and enter a game that doesnt have social links for every character
I disagree. I have just beat red rider and while I'm loving this game so far due to its combat and especially its art direction (god the lighting is just gorgeous at times), this game has no story. Everything is just plot and exposition. None of the characters feel even remotely real to me.
i feel like a lot of the people who tell you to play an smt game anytime you talk about how much you like persona dont realize you dont wanna play smt, you wanna play persona
I’ve been playing the remaster too and I’ve actually really been enjoying the dungeons. Considering that all SMT games before Nocturne were all 2D dungeon crawlers they definitely made a game that felt just like a dungeon crawler but in 3D. I haven’t felt like I needed to explore an entire area and fill out a map this much before and I’ve really been enjoying this aspect of Nocturne
A few of the later dungeons are awful, but for the most part it's pretty good. Encounter rate sucks though, I'm on the final dungeon and still haven't found the "Estoma" skill shown in the video...
@@bestesthd in the first kalpa of the labyrinth of Amala there is a shady broker that will sell you a demon with estoma and every other traversal ability. It’s super useful. Plenty of other ways to get estoma though

I love SMT nocturne and I agree 100% with your criticisms. I love persona as well but the combat engine in SMT games scratches a very especific itch for me. You have to learn about the demons, the game is all about them. Its a pokemon game from hell. I often feel like in persona you get "disposable personas" and you dont get attached to them. In SMT you have to use everything they have because of the difficulty and I love that focus on the demons. Both franchises are amazing. Nice vid man
@@enzoidd but you stick with them for more time. Yes you have to change, but on hard you have to fuse them and learn their habilities very carefully and they also evolve. In persona I feel like 1 level is enough to change a persona and that skill that you can summon personas levels above you makes this worse. In smt you must choose the right demons you have to know them or you get wrecked
@@yzhiel2680 And generally you find yourself consciously fusing demons in SMT to solve the problems ahead of you while in Persona, you're frequently just fusing to clear out space in your inventory.
10:52....That's just most of the mainline games minus 4. Believe me Smt in terms of story isn't especially character driven. It cares more about it's world and themes rather than the individual characters which isn't a bad thing but I could see why some people would get bored.
I think the fact that it's so lonely sells the atmosphere really well. I imagine Demifiend is just a guy that tries to survive in a really harsh world and that really makes the immersion much more satisfying. But really reason why I like SMT more than Persona is the combat system. Persona's One More system with the all-out attack and the recent Baton Pass system just makes the battles dull for me just by cheesing them except for a few boss fights. SMT's Press Turn is simple but it does its job really well by leveling the playing field for you AND your enemy. If an encounter lasts more than two turns happens, I gotta think more seriously on how to survive it. Not to mention how the fusion system really makes you think on how to build your party, while Persona just only has it to make the MC new personas while everyone else's is prebuilt. So yeah basically I like SMT more just because the combat has more depth to it imo than Persona
Thing is only persona 3 onwards has the whole mc is the only who can fuse demons and use them because persona 1 and 2's duology has it where every party member can have three personas at once, i don't know why they changed it i liked it, it gave me more room to balance my party around bosses and dungeons.
I think P5, with all of the quick changes and extra turns it allows, its more about styling on demons than slowly planning your turns to not fucking die in the next enemy turn. And I enjoy it. To add to the title of this video. If SMT is for JRPGs what Dark Souls is for Action Games, then Persona 5 is Devil May Cry. Yeah sure, you can win the game by just button mashing and abusing your most powerful skill, but the real fun in the game is in planning cool combos and feeling stylish as hell while killing enemies. And I like both games for very different reasons.
I’m glad SMT is finally getting more recognition. It’s definitely my favorite video game series. The combat is always really fast-paced and fun, the stories are always really interesting, and (of the course) the music is always amazing.
i can say not as hard as people crying about it being only thing i say is hard is getting good fuse info off the web as people are like use the calculator as we do not know what demon is a most for the fuse
Nocturne was my first SMT game. A friend picked it up for me after hearing me complain about modern Pokémon. I loved it (hate the end game dungeons), but overall it really does scratch that Pokémon itch. Didn't really have a problem with the bosses but I can see why people get destroyed by them. I can happily say I've moved on to 5 and I'm loving it too.
The "dark story" is never what drew me personally to smt. Honestly I think the stories are usually relatively barebones. Not bad but barebones. What I love is the world. It's like an even weirder version of Alice in Wonder land. Everyone is weird an unhinged and nothing makes sense but it's kind of charming. You know sometimes you just gotta level up your magic so you can win a dance battle. And I like that you just get thrown into that world to figure out for yourself rather than hand held through a ten hour tutorial that feels the need to explain every detail to you multiple times as if you were a child with severe head trauma. I will never forgive persona 5 for doing that. No other persona was that bad with their opening.
While a lot of people consider nocturne to be the "certified hood classic" of the series. I've found that the best SMT games are the 3ds ones. I'm talking -4 and 4 Apocalypse (yes, fight me) -Strange journey redux (satanic personaQ) -soul hackers -devil survivor (the true fire emblem x SMT). But other than the 3ds there's digital devil saga which is nocturne but better on ps2. I know the fan base is full of elitists but we're just kinda mad we've been shafted for the persona series, and this series is definitely worth checking out. Also, music. Music slaps.
While I do agree with most of the points, you don’t need to be 10 hours in to get estoma lol. You can get it for 15000 Macca starting at level 28 in the first kalpa by talking to the shady broker. The demon he gives you not only has estoma but a fucking ton of other spells that are very useful for dungeon exploring
@@grubfriend if you want to explore any of the tunnel dungeons it’s basically a necessity, otherwise you’ll spend tons extra on repulse bells, float balls, and light balls and who wants to do that on hard mode where they cost nearly 1000 per each
This reminds me of the from software fans trying to name their favorite series. "Hey, there's a new game, but with a different name, and it's very similar, let's combine the names!" Soulsborne "Hey, another new game, but this one is completely different ... Oh well, it's made by the same creator let's slap the names together." SoulKiro Borne "Wait, a new game again but with a different name AGAIN? Fuck it let's just slap all these bad boys together" SoulKiroBorne Ring
Nocturne is my favorite SMT. Its the game I think about for years after randomly. Nothing has a world/atmosphere like Nocturne. Nothing. Lonely is a great description of it. It really feels like the apocalypse happened
10:22 This is really the only point I’d disagree on. Not the fact that it’s lonely, because it definitely is. More the fact that that’s a bad thing. I’d argue it fits well with the rest of the themes and tone of the game. Understandably not for everyone, though. Also, the audio compression is the only real issue I have with the remaster. Like, shit, it doesn’t need to be a full orchestra rework! Just make sure it doesn’t sound like ass!
When people misunderstand the intention of the loneliness it makes me frustrated because I just want to tell them that they are supposed to feel terrible in the lonely world and the unwelcome nature of the vortex world (There being no safe spots and the sparse dialogue) is meant to instill a deep sense of dread within you.
The elitists for this series are the minority, don't worry about them. Also, the games aren't THAT hard. They just keep you on your toes. I wouldn't say Nocturne *gets* good either, I thoroughly enjoyed it from the very beginning.
@@NeoCoreSaturn he doesn't reapply red Capote unless you completely remove his buffs, so you can Sukunda him 3 times (or fog breath and 1 sukunda) to leave him at +1, then use Sukukaja to boost your own agility to max so you have a +3 agility advantage over him. It makes a big difference and that combined with a demon that nullifies wind he will waste a lot of his turns.

Persona 5 is definitely a better starting point. Hell, Apocalypse is probably a better starting point. I still really enjoy this game over all, but this is a game for people who are already fans of this type of game. Not remotely beginner friendly.
@@dantemustdie00 it's not just the mechanics(affinities and better smirk), but rather the balance of the game in general(including the demons) as apocalypse also has a neat difficulty curve imo whereas in iv it's gonna kick your balls at the start with those ambushes and resistances(nulls reflect and absorb on weak enemies lol) plus the whole smirk crap and partners(rather than being hard it's just more about luck), and then after you get out, it's pathetically easy and every demon becomes the same thanks to the fusion letting you change everything including its first skills, and the only other bosses harder on the game are because they spam ailments(which is solved by luck lol) or megidolaon in all their goddamn turns making the fight essentially a hp check even if you buff and debuff to the max (+2 -2 in some cases)
I think the idea that SMT fans like it cause it’s hard is a misconception, at least in my case, I just enjoyed the gameplay cause it was unique and engaging
What i like more on SMT is their sentient living demons and gods, they feel alive. Unlike Persona who just talks at first then proceeds to never talk again.
Hard mode is the actual fun mode of this game imo. You said random encounters can be auto'd but try that on hard and you'll most likely get killed by a demon with counter lol. Not trying to be toxic, just saying that if people think the game is getting easy and boring, why not try hard mode? After all, the remaster lets you change the difficulty whenever you like it.
@@chaosphantoms Hard mode is literaly like pokemon, the enemy has the same damage calculation as you. In normal a "wild" pixie would do 8 points of damage but 16 in your party, while in hard both do 16.
I think Digital Devil Saga had the perfect mix of having smt bs and a memorable party so I would recommend it first. I hope that game gets a well deserved remake
I feel like DDS had a great mix of difficult SMT gameplay and philosophical thought, and a party of actual individuals to get attached to with full on characterization outside of being metaphors for some greater meaning.
It is very challenging. And it is also very rewarding. The concpet of this game is mind-blowing. I wish more games would dare to be crazy like this. Nocturne was my 3rd turn-based jrpg. I wanted to break my ps2. It took me months to finish.
They're still essentially random in IV. They spawn out of nowhere and chase you as if you're playing Madden. DQ11 (and smt v too, it seems) on the other hand has symbol encounters that are hardly threatening at all. They just stand around and hardly chase you. Its difficult finding the right balance.
Ok I'm not an elitist at all and I'm not very good at dark souls....but I never considered mainline smt to be overly difficult? It's nearly identical to playing Persona, so if you're used to one then you should be fine? Though I did feel that P5 was a little easier than other Persona titles. It was the first one where I felt like I needed to play on hard mode. I'm over halfway through playing the remastered SMT Nocturne and I've only died 2-3 times? Mostly from laziness. I'm not discounting other peoples experiences, just I don't think everyone should assume it's such a hard game.
@@trashboat5388 yeah, now that I think of it, that may be what the issue here is. A lot of J-RPG's don't really reward you that much for using buffs and debuffs, but they are a literal game changer in SMT games. If people are not accustomed to using buffs then they will have a hard time.
yeah persona is definitely more accessible, but i really enjoy getting my shit kicked in repeatedly by wendigo on my 6th playthrough of smt 4 the game being harder isn't necessarily a bad thing and i just wish people could grasp that. i unironically think merciless 5 is easier than fellow mode smt 4 lmao good video :)
I find SMT IV on normal difficulty to be not much harder than when I played P5 on normal/easy mode lmao but to be fair P5 was my first game in the whole series and probably my first jrpg, so I was not used to the mechanics at all. Also helped that I beat P3 FES on normal mode before starting SMT IV, that also helped me get used to the mechanics more. Yeah mainline SMT mechanics are fairly different to Persona but there's also a lot of similarities
I would also say Nocturne is just a terrible rep for the franchise... It's just too different from every other game in every way that pretending this represents the series in any fashion makes me sad... This game is the roadblock people insist must be broken through, when really, I would say just avoid it entirely. I love it, but humanity be like that sometimes.

Bought this out of curiosity Later learned that the game can be summarized as “a shirtless man wandering in depressingly long endless corridors with the least minimum interaction” God, I’m so lonely….
Yakko reviewing SMT 3, I love you. As for the elitism in the smt community i'd like to think it's a loud vocal minority and if anyone is genuinely interested in smt dont let those people stop you, after all I started with persona 5 and not gonna lie I think I prefer mainline smt at this point. I love both series of course but point is you won't know you like it if you don't try it.
Funny. Every single SMT I have ever meet either online or offline just encourages people to play the series pointing out flaws where they are and advice where it is needed. I'd say the contrary, Persona fans I have meet come out as far more elitist, and in some small cases even misinformed, about their own games (specially anything before 3)
I watched the trailer and something just struck a cord with me. I bought SMT 4 on the 3Ds and I’m having a good time so far! My only problem is not knowing which game to play next!
@@keefdavies6956 id say apocalypse after 4 since it’s sort of a sequel, Strange Journey Redux is even more torturous than Nocturne, devil survivor 1 and 2 are amazing though, highly recommend
Is not that Persona 5 is bad. I think the problem is that after the rising popularity in Persona games the SMT fans are under it's shadow, first by persona 4 then 5. That and the fact a lot of "normies" or how ****** people like to call em' start with the: "Persona 5 is the best JRPG evermade or similar". Now if an SMT fan hears that it's obvious he or she would react like that, so P5 is not the problem, is the people who don't shut up about it and doesn't "praise" other SMT apart from the Persona series.
@Fanjanhong * Where is the fun in doing that? Exploration is very integral to my enjoyment of SJ. Even on a replay I'd prefer to go out and map everything myself. Dunno what you mean about it being no different from SMT I, to my knowledge SMT I doesn't have ailment tiles, trap doors or secret doors and it definitely doesn't have anything like phase shifts.
@Fanjanhong * Listen man, I just enjoy first-person dungeon crawling. I don't mind the pitfalls since I'm all about autistically filling in the entire map anyway. In that sense and even in the sense of normal gameplay stepping on a pitfall is still making progress. Progress is fun. The backtracking was never that bad to me since it was always like a floor down and too far from a staircase. And I'll disagree on your points about difficulty and resource management, Expert mode has managed to always keep me on my toes while I'm in the current sector. It always been just the right level of peril from random encounters to keep me from getting bored just walking around. >What's the fun in "exploring"? You mean staring at the same copy pasted blurry textures across the entire dungeon? Are you just pretending that dungeon layout isn't the only thing that matters here? Textures mean zil when you're going to be looking at the bottom screen most of the time. I have fun exploring them because the layouts are interesting. If you want truly appalling dungeon design look no further than P4. I basically dropped that game because they were so dull and uninteresting. Just looking up the layout of a dungeon seems so boring to me. If I'm not here to figure it out myself why am I even playing? I don't recall what you're talking about in Delphinus so I guess it wasn't an issue for me and not even Eridanus got me to look up a guide. The various hidden doors and the teleporter maze pissed me off to no end but that only made it more satisfying to finally uncover them and progress. I'd say the optimal way for you to play SJ is to not play SJ since it seems like you despise just about every aspect of its design.
I love Nocturne and grew up on it, but man is it a labor of love. I mean actual labor, it's actual work to get what you might love out of it. I feel like on a scale the Persona series is on one far end of the Mega-Ten umbrella, and SMT is on the far far opposite. I'd say that Digital Devil Saga kinda falls somewhere in the middle, likely leaning a bit more towards SMT because of it's gameplay. Nocturne is the kind of game where if you are made to play it and don't like games like it, it will turn you away from any games like it due to the work involved in getting ANYTHING out of it. That being said, I'd put in that work every time.
I don't even mind the lonelier, more quiet tone of the game. The fact that healing costs money, random encounters can happen almost anywhere, and the dungeons are super hard to navigate on your own is what makes progressing through the game so daunting for me. I really want to keep playing it and exploring the world, but every time I end up in a sudden encounter that catches me completely off guard and I lose 30 minutes of progress, it kills my motivation. Oh and my first death was getting hit with hama on my main character at full health.
I feel like you would've done alot better if you started with a game like devil survivor. Its a much better bridge from persona to smt than the proverbial jump off a cliff that is nocturne
11:06 I'm sorry what? What game are you even playing? I can get oneshot by most enemy combinations if I don't null some of their attacks and think carefully about how I prioritize turns. Autobattle only works if a single target is left and they don't resist physical, or they have low health. And honestly SMT is pretty much the only turn based game I genuinely enjoy. The amount of strategy and team customization there's at play makes it enjoyable. I might enjoy jrpgs in general if they all had as involving gameplay systems.
“The amount of strategy” lmao just buff and debuff that’s literally the only game plan in these games. Not knocking on the series for that, it’s still fun, but that’s the only “strategy” you need to beat the games. Especially Nocturne, +3 Sukukaja breaks the game in half.
I still don't understand people saying SMT is hard Both SMT and Persona ain't hard at all if you get the mechanics It's literally just Persona and SMT babies crying all the time lmao just fucking play the games and enjoy them man
SMT to Persona 5 is like how Seinen is to Shounen anime. Both are basically the same genre, except the former tend to be more mature and dark compared to the latter
The epitome of Nocturne's clunky edges is how much running in circles you do to shift the Kagatsuchi phases. Fusing some demons? Run in circles until a full moon to get the extra sacrifice function, or to a certain phase to make a Fiend. Found a treasure chest? Better run around until it's werewolf season so you get a stat-boosting incense instead of a life stone. About to start any boss fight? Wait up! Better run in circles until you have a full/new moon to trigger Bright/Dark Might. And Great Will help you if the phase changes out from under you right as the boss fight triggers. That being said, I still can't get enough of Nocturne now that I'm playing it for the first time ever. The early story is slow, yeah, but I find there's a pretty strong personal story in going from a newblood halfbreed wimp to a full-fledged demon on whom the entire world hinges. Every successful round of fusion feels like its own character arc as you assemble a team of vicious monsters at your beck and call... Plus a Pixie. For moral support.
I feel Modern Persona is not what I got into the series for(since I grew up with Revelations Persona on the PS1). Mainline was more my style since it kept that mystery and atmosphere Persona lost in its transition to 3D
@@thelel6591 P3 had a good message but bad writing(and really bland characters). P4 had a weaker message but a better set of characters. P5 is just kinda meh all around beyond gameplay being sorta fun if it wasn't mindlessly easy
As someone who has only been part of the SMT fandom for only 5 months, I can kinda understand where the frustration of those "Go play a real SMT game!" types come from. Granted, P5R was what got me into MegaTen, and I still think it's great and worthy of its praise, but Persona seems to be the only thing the modern day gaming media gives recognition to when it comes to SMT, just like how they don't give Capcom recognition for anything nowadays other than Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter when Capcom has produced several classic games since the mid 80's (even poor Mega Man is being ignored!). That's exactly what is happening in the gaming-related media with Shin Megami Tensei: They don't give the series recognition for anything other than Persona, and ignore other titles in the series like the aforementioned Devil Survivor, Majin Tensei, Last Bible, Soul Hackers 2, or even the older titles on the Famicom and the Super Famicom. You hear all this stuff about how SMT has been one of Japan's most influential and most successful adventure game franchises of all time, yet nobody ever talks about anything other than Persona. Not to mention, these people only seem to care about Persona 3, 4 and 5, and completely ignore Persona 1 and 2 as if they don't exist. And on the rare occasion Persona 1 and 2 do get acknowledged, they usually say to avoid them or something else. So while I don't commend the behavior of those other SMT fans who complain about Persona or personally attack those who like Persona, I think I understand their frustration in a way and what causes them to act the way they do. That being said, Nocturne was my second SMT game after P5R, and there are a lot of things I like about it, and a lot of things that piss me off, such as the 2nd kalpa of the Amala Labyrinth which infuriated the hell out of me. And I forgot to save the first time I made it out and I was so pissed, because I got a lot of macca and about one or two items in the little tunnel you dive down before going to one of the kalpas, and the time I actually did manage to finish it and save, I didn't have any of those things, and I don't even remember what the items were that I got! For all I know they were rare items.
They don't talk about SMT aside of P3-P5, maybe because P3-P5 (and little now - SMT V) were only game in series marketed / advertised well in West. And Persona 3-5 was basically created for making money (for example: high school setting is one of most popular setting in modern anime, or they created ,,mascot characters'' for P3-P5, when P1-P2 have not those types of anime tropes). Plus most of SMT games were on less popular, portable platforms in West, when Persona was always on home console popular in West - Playstation.
My friend sent me here, and no it's not the dark souls of JRPGs Dark Souls is the Dark Souls of JRPGs. I seriously hate it when people compare any game to Dark Souls based on the concept of "difficulty" because difficulty in Dark Souls is subjective. there are bosses that people struggle on that others breeze through without a second thought. Also Dark Souls is unique in it's method of story telling, that is what makes the game so beloved. It's sparse use of character dialogue, its use of unreliable narration, environmental details, limited cutscenes, enemy placement, item placement, flavor text. All of these concepts are puzzles pieces that when placed together tell a story, much like trying to verify historical records, places, and accounts to piece together history. Difficulty does not make a game similar to Dark Souls.

I love Persona because of the things it does differently than SMT. I'm glad SMT V is being made for the people who wanted it, but It's not for me.

Yeah, as someone who loves both SMT and Persona, I can definitely say that both fandoms are not perfect. i agree, but you should also consider that sekiro is the dark souls of the action genre, which metal gear revengeance is a part of, revengeance being the metal gear of that genre since metal gear is a stealth game which is its own genre, metal gear being one of the first stealth games, helping to create the genre that sekiro is also a part of

Dark souls : The SMT of action rpg
Does the DDS MegaTen OVA adapt the novel perfectly?
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is the Shin Megami Tensei of the Shin Megami Tensei series.
And (as far as my memory goes) a Super Boss fight against the Demi-fiend in the 1st Digital Devil Saga because... I have no idea and I don't care.
Digital Devil Saga is severely underrated imo and I wish more people played it, also the opening themes for both games are bangers
DDS duology are the real dark souls of SMT in my book. DDS difficulty spikes wayy more than nocturne. It features some of the superbosses which will put any other SMT games to shame.
Except for random encounters. The encounter rate is so high, shit feels like harassment
@@PikangsFutaba My best guess is that it was to spit on any game that prided itself for having hard super bosses.

Nice vid man
the disposable personas thing applies to smt as well, besides a few very strong ones theyre mostly meant to be disposable
@@enzoidd but you stick with them for more time. Yes you have to change, but on hard you have to fuse them and learn their habilities very carefully and they also evolve. 10:52....That's just most of the mainline games minus 4. Believe me Smt in terms of story isn't especially character driven. It cares more about it's world and themes rather than the individual characters which isn't a bad thing but I could see why some people would get bored.
I hate persona 5 with a burning passion, but i also hate the stupid smt fans who make all of us smt and persona fans look bad
I thought turn press was kind of boring honestly

i can say not as hard as people crying about it being only thing i say is hard is getting good fuse info off the web as people are like use the calculator as we do not know what demon is a most for the fuse

They're still essentially random in IV. They spawn out of nowhere and chase you as if you're playing Madden. You said “series” but only really went in depth into nocturne.
This dude's gonna freak when he sees Eridanus.
He’s gonna kill himself going through Antila he isn’t making it to Eridanus
@@sock312 Tbf Morax is a fucker to fight, at least on Expert mode. The actual dungeon isn't really bad though.
@@Osakart no I know the design isn’t bad this guy just seems to be a moron. I love strange journey to death.
Persona: got smooth jazz
Shin Megami Tensei:FRICKING ROCKSSSSSSS
I don't even mind the lonelier, more quiet tone of the game. The fact that healing costs money, random encounters can happen almost anywhere, and the dungeons are super hard to navigate on your own is what makes progressing through the game so daunting for me. I really want to keep playing it and exploring the world, but every time I end up in a sudden encounter that catches me completely off guard and I lose 30 minutes of progress, it kills my motivation. Oh and my first death was getting hit with hama on my main character at full health.
Skill issue.
I feel like you would've done alot better if you started with a game like devil survivor. Its a much better bridge from persona to smt than the proverbial jump off a cliff that is nocturne
Ehh i think 4 is debatable a better start
11:06 I'm sorry what? What game are you even playing? I can get oneshot by most enemy combinations if I don't null some of their attacks and think carefully about how I prioritize turns. Autobattle only works if a single target is left and they don't resist physical, or they have low health.
And honestly SMT is pretty much the only turn based game I genuinely enjoy. The amount of strategy and team customization there's at play makes it enjoyable. I might enjoy jrpgs in general if they all had as involving gameplay systems.
Had the same thought, I usually get slapped by most mobs if i'm not paying attention. I refuse to use auto battle just in case some bullshit happens
“The amount of strategy” lmao just buff and debuff that’s literally the only game plan in these games. Not knocking on the series for that, it’s still fun, but that’s the only “strategy” you need to beat the games. Especially Nocturne, +3 Sukukaja breaks the game in half.
In SMT : Strange Journey I made a mistake of auto .... Against Demons that can REFLECT Physical .... And there goes hours of Progress
I still don't understand people saying SMT is hard
Both SMT and Persona ain't hard at all if you get the mechanics
It's literally just Persona and SMT babies crying all the time lmao just fucking play the games and enjoy them man
SMT to Persona 5 is like how Seinen is to Shounen anime.
To put it simple
In persona you make friends
In nocturne you kill you're friends
Persona: happy go lucky rpg dating game
Smt: lobotomy hospital that makes drugs out of said lobotomized brain
That's SMT IV reference my favorite SMT game so far
I don’t hate Persona at all, it just feels to anime cliched.
Yeah that's my problem with Persona, I'm not into games are way too Clitche with the anime tropes
I feel Modern Persona is not what I got into the series for(since I grew up with Revelations Persona on the PS1). Mainline was more my style since it kept that mystery and atmosphere Persona lost in its transition to 3D
persona 3 did it right imo. accepting death the way they executed it was jus really enjoyable. p4 ehhh dont really like fakeout deaths. p5 too
@@thelel6591 P3 had a good message but bad writing(and really bland characters). P4 had a weaker message but a better set of characters. P5 is just kinda meh all around beyond gameplay being sorta fun if it wasn't mindlessly easy
Tbh P2 and P1 were the only games I really enjoyed, Not trying to sound like one of those people but the other games were just kinda boring to me
As someone who has only been part of the SMT fandom for only 5 months, I can kinda understand where the frustration of those "Go play a real SMT game!" types come from.
Very excited for Shin Megami Tensei 5 which will be my first SMT.
You should be, that game will be an absolute banger.
I can't believe you actually bought the megami tensei book.... now you need to suffer the first megami tensei game xDD
