This game was amazing! Perfect combat, perfect exploration, great art direction and great demon designs. The only issue with the game is that it's not persona 5. Score - 4/10. Hopefully atlus will fix that with an update.
"Hanging on to the same demons for too long is unreasonable when they're easily outclassed by stronger ones" Me with my lv 99 Loup-garou: don't talk to me or my son ever again.
I dont really care if the main storyline is shallow, the sidequests in this game are fantastic. I saved mermaids from a fucking PAZUZU I HAVE LET THE HLRNY DEMONGIRLS INTO TOKYO I HAVE KILLED THE GOD OF BIRDS CAUSE I THOUGHT THAT HE WAS ONE OF THE FOUR CHINESE GODS I NEEDED TO KILL BUT NO I JUST KILLED THE GOD OF BIRDS AHHHHH
People are definitely not realizing the story is made up of the whole, the side quests, the main story quests, the negotiations, the boss battles.. Everything makes up the story
The story absolutely did fall a bit short. So many great concepts were introduced that left me even more captivated by the world around the protagonist. My main issue with the game is that they didn't focus enough on those concepts and ideas. Outside of that, gameplay and world environments are amazing and I loved every second of this game (Shiva one shot my team) 10/10 vid btw
i hear from people who used to love the "law" routes that 5's is pretty meh. and looking into it [i watched sooo many Lps/streams/cutscenes], its bc of the writer's perspectives/cultural bg being the only one. like, theres a difference between what japanese writers think of gods and God vs. latin american or european. my grandma lives a block away from the church, every saint has a holiday in central america, they have a holy version of halloween...idk. it would be fun to integrate that into SMT's future stories.
I can only hope they will did better for next entry since now they have basically the raw materials and can be more focused on their writings rather than trying "kinda" a bit hard to appeal the mass.
@@liz_violet I think Law works best in SMT when it focuses more on the “Order” aspect rather than the “Religious” aspect. For that reason the best Law endings tend to be the ones where God is either out of the picture or not directly involved funnily enough. My favorite Law endings that fall into this category are the Ronaldo ending from Devil Survivor 2 and the new Law ending from Strange Journey Redux.
As a big fan of SMT in general this is up there with my favourites such as Devil Survivor, DDS and the Raidou games (not including persona) and it is the only game in the series I actually want to 100% due to how rewarding the exploration and combat feels P.S. great vid
Ah devil survivor, amazing game. It's my favorite smt game so far, but man is it ruthless on certain bosses💀. Beelzabul was probably my favorite boss so far(I went straight to chaos) but the final boss? Nah, that shit is a ruthless wall... It's certainly less punishing than something like digital devil saga(demi fiend.....oh the cries of pain i suffered during that fight....).
Yeah devil survivor is the game I always recommend to persona fans to play if they want to play SMT but I always have to warn them about the difficulty
Yeah it has everything; a good story, amazing character, tons of replay-ability and great tactical gameplay probably one of my favourite games of all time
@@dig1taltoaster also we can't forget atsuBRO, he's loyal to you until the end of time, and I find that endearing😅. Characters feel scarily real, that's another thing I love about this game, really does feel like a bridge between persona and regular smt...
Yakko really came into his own in the past couple years. Before I could see a lot of similarities between his and karp's videos, but now I see him really showing his own stage presence, joke nuance, and writing style. Always happy to get another video, thanks yaggo!
I'm pleading to everyone who watches this video and even has a passing interest in this game. Please buy it. Do it for us so that Atlus doesn't send SMT to its room without any supper yet again. And while you're at it, make sure to buy ten copies of Metroid Dread. Just a suggestion.
You know, talking about the "buy it" thing makes me think of how portbeggars were made fun of (ahem Persona 5 ahem), and now there are even more of them
10:05 SMT in a nutshell "You wouldnt want to be square like those law nerds, have some fun with chaos!" Later:"I have made an error, dead babies litter the streets"
You didn’t have to not compare it to Persona but I’m so glad you did! Shin Megami Tensei’s identity has been so intrinsically linked to Persona ever since Persona overtook it in popularity and it drives me nuts seeing SMT get compared so frequently to its sister series when really they’re both unique and standalone. Great review as well, I couldn’t agree with your thoughts more!
I don't personally view comparing the two as an issue neccesarily, in fact, with how popular Persona is, and since SMTV did bring in some fans of Persona 5, I think comparing them is only natural. Now that being said, there's a *BIG* difference between comparing two games from the same company that are similar, and then there is using Persona 5 as your metric for judging how SMTV is and comparing them at literally every aspect, complaining when its lacking features from Persona, the overall showing little care about the series and it's long history, and forgetting important details such as the plot and characters (even if they turn out to be relatively weak, it's still something you should talk about in a review) all while writing it off as just "Persona without the heart" (Yeah I still will never forgive IGN for that "review") A big reason I think this is because by doing all that, you imply that Persona 5 is the golden standard of all JRPGs and anything that isn't like it is "without the heart/settling for less", and this doesn't just go for MegaTen, this goes for any JRPGs, I've seen quite a few reviews of other JRPGs not even by Atlus compared to P5 for not having aspects of it, which to me, is just not how you should review a game. In my mind the perfect SMTV review talks about everything the game does have to offer and its strengths and weakness (exactly like how this person did), however, *towards the end of the video*, begin comparing the two and telling Persona fans interested in the game what it has to offer in a more straightforward way so they can get a better idea on if it's for them or not, idk that's just my take Long story short: Comparing the two isn't inherently the issue, but it becomes an issue once you do it too much to the point you mention it every other sentence, complain about Persona aspects like Social Links/Confidants and the Calender system not being there, and neglect what it does have and writing it off as basically settling for less when it's meant to be something very different is the problem. Sorry that was super long, just thought I'd share my thoughts.
@@storm7870 Yeah, one thing is that Persona is, at least from P3 onwards, meant to be a fusion between JRPG and LIFE SIM. You know The Social Links? Free Time? Social Stats? The Fucking Calendar System? That's all part of the LIFE SIM aspect, not the JRPG part. Acting like they're requirements for a good JRPG is not only ignoring that they're specifically crafted to cater to Persona's overarching themes of fleeting time, the benefits of socialization and support and the idea of being true to oneself, even if it's painful to do so, and thus aren't fit for every game, but also that they were taken from an ENTIRELY SEPARATE GENRE. which is just... frankly, it's quite telling.
11:12 I love this part of the game, taken straight from strange journey. I love the fear of god so much because of how hard it goes and looking at it from this perspective. Going through an unknown world, where demons are just jumbled masses in front of you during your first encounter. During a normal battle, the battle theme plays after choosing combat as an option instead of diplomacy or running like here, but the heavy violin lasts long enough to be the first turn of an average encounter. After this point if the enemy isn't wiped out a choir like noise is where the music goes, and by the time the choir is done, the violin returns harder than ever to signify the battle's likely gone south since if a battle's gone on longer than 4 turns in this series, something's wrong and you need to focus. I love the feeling of having the battle theme bot play until combat is the player's final decision and it works so well for this series that every battle is a battle for your life and every encounter bestows the fear of god
Actually! The pre battle theme isn't unique to SJ (I don't think it was introduced there either), but SJ's is amazing, it really gives that suspense feel, specially when talking to demons (which...demons in that game make sense), and then Fear of God plays, that song is epic as hell, it really fits with the setting The bad part is when you end the fight on the best part of the song
That's a thing since the first smt game (Was it in MT1 though? The pre battle theme is in KMT but it came after If, I don’t bother playing inferior versions of games so i don’t know if smt1 really was the first)
yakko your work is phenomenal dude, i havent been watching you that long but holy shit the amount of effort and just pizazz in it is astounding thank you.
If you liked the gameplay of SMT V, may I suggest Hylics 2? It's got a lot of the quality of life improvements that game has from fun exploration to one of the best combat systems I've ever had the pleasure of using. Oh, and the soundtrack is made up of the best, most surreal beach rock I've ever heard
I gotta say, video essays like these are what inspired me to start making my own recently. You're able to balance in-depth analysis with a great sense of humor, while also KILLING it on the editing. Great job. Keep doing what you do. ☺️
I swear the first time I’ve beaten Nocturne the first thing I said was “I don’t want to see this game ever again in my life” and then I bought the HD Remaster, that stuff grows on you in such a weird way. V instead is a banger, tons of fun but there’s a ton of dumb stuff like that secret superboss; not for the fight itself, easily the best in the game, rather for the route you can take by beating it being extremely easy in comparison to that fight, the whole endgame becomes a cakewalk because of level scaling being so heavy in this game
@@Pie_The_Man except in BW where they got very pretentious on actually making a serious story but made it filled with so many plot holes it just falls apart if you think about it for even a second.
@@V-Jes The plot holes wasn't what bothered me with Pokemon BW. It was BW's grindiness, hated they made audino's the only pokemon that dropped a decent amount of exp. I'm okay with grinding if it is for short term goals but it was just tedious in BW. Like I don't want it as easy as the newer games where you can't chose to turn of the EXP share (at least in XY you could chose whether you want the exp share on, no such ability in BDSP always on bleh) but you should be able to make it through the main story if you play normally ie try and fill out most of the regional pokedex before post-game and battle every trainer. But I am a crazy person who loves raising pokemon to get perfect IVs but isn't that into fighting competitively, I made my brother grind all the BP for buying moves
@@clarehidalgo BW is balanced to be easily beaten without grinding, all you need to do is only use 3 Pokémon for battling at most because that's how the XP was balanced in all the games until Gen 6 when they finally updated the EXP share...
@@V-Jes I always find it funny how people just echo that Pokemon Black and White's story as good, like it's not. It's convoluted at best and falls entirely when unraveled, I like Pokemon BW but calling it's story good is hilarious, I think people just remember the N parts and I get it N is a pretty cool character and his speech at the end of the game was memorable but I seriously doubt anyone would remember or recall what Team Plasma's motives, leaders, backstory and plan were, calling them the Pokemon PETA equivalent is already an oversimplification of this pretty eh evil team
i like that they took inspiration from tokyo mirage sessions by making exploration and party setup very fun. It’s an addicting gameplay loop of overworld action and spawning back to be more stronk
It's just me or TMS is slowly getting more love? Personally don't play it out of pure prejudice and because i hate how they did the visual for FE characters Maybe If i play it as a scrapped concept for Persona 5/6 i can survive it
"What if just became god, I'm so much cooler." Is the main similarity with Nocturne and V to me. I'm not a human with a computer on my arm, a something better. Now let me brawl with a snowman.
I'll be honest, SMT was never on my radar until I played P4 & 5. So I bought SMT5 on launch and holy crap I was sucked in. Yes, it's absolutely the Dark Souls of JRPGs, where everything matters more and you need to pay attention else risk losing progress...like I did at the first boss battle. I enjoyed how simple it was to play but still difficult to master and the process of demon crafting again and again while grinding a few levels and getting *almost* all the mission completed was fun even though it was nothing like Persona imo. This was the first game I considered NG+ although, I didn't. I was actually very disappointed it was done in just 50ish hours but still gave it a 10/10.
SMTV was such a fun experience. It may be more so because I wasn't expecting much "story", but I genuinely enjoyed the demons, fights, exploration, MUSIC, and so much more. Despite there being a minimalistic story, the concepts and themes presented where extremely interesting and to a extent- thought-provoking. Especially when considering the context of SMT Nocturne and IV: Apocalypse, the implications were very intriguing and cool.
Perfectly captured my thoughts on this beast of a game. Maybe a more story-based SMT spin-off can take a lot from the gameplay to make the perfect marriage between great story and great gameplay. The future of Megaten has never been brighter. BUY SMTV
@Marrow Amin Ehhh...are you ok? Saying that the 3ds has a lot of SMT games on it is relevant to the conversation because IV is also on the 3ds and they might find others on the 3ds
The story may not have been all that but when just about everything else is so good I can easily look past that. It’s just so fun and there’s so many demons and side quests to discover that it more than makes up for it
“You are not meant to feel safe in the netherworld” flashback to my first 20hours of gameplay before I figured out the sound cue for full moon was not in fact a sound cue for impending doom 😂😅🙁😕😖😑
As a persona player wish me luck because this is the first "real" smt game I will play. Having fun so far I just fused mermaid which looks quite strong for early game. Currently my party include mermaid because of the sig move, obariyon because not only does it have a plus 1 proficiency in support and healing but a plus 3 proficiency in physical and a multihit physical skill although I will probably replace it fully with another physical one although a plus 3 proficiency is hard to come by at this point and finally angel which does good light damage and great healing, revival, and status clearing and once I get attack and defense buffs on it then the prior party member might be replace though solid agility and 3 physical proficiency is keeping it on my team. Haven't fought any bosses so far. Update: got to the tower boss did pretty good with ice skills. Funny thing is that I can now summon mr hassou tobi as soon as I reach level 45 because for some reason you can fuse 2 demons less than level 10. Btw I am having fun so far although I still prefer persona for its balance between characters, story, and combat as well as the daily life elements. Finally beat the tower boss quite difficult. I had to buff the mermaid's accuracy and evasion to avoid attacks and land debuffs easier as well as debuffing their accuracy and evasion making obariyon ironically the mvp in this boss fight. Kinda a damage sponge but a boss like this has appeal though I wish there was more of a hint to its weakness. Beat Nuwa on my 2nd or 3rd try because I gave pixie elements to the protag because he is weak to force. A tip is to level to at least 22 and get a few fire demons to deal weak damage mainly pyro jack who has a +5 aglio and Feng huang who is about as good as the angel as a healer as well as having a strong +4 aglio. Recommendations is to get 3 force dampeners after she gains energy as she will use the aoe attack the next turn. Another tip is that the battle ends at half her hp rather than being fully depleted so although she is tanky, she isn't as tanky as she appears.
great review! loved your perspective. I simply adored the story and felt powerful by the end. Really felt like a powerful god and it was amazing! the performance is my issue but honestly the game wasnt buggy nor with big loading screens... idk, just loved and tips for the new players: stay AWAY from hair puns while negotiating with demons (unless is a Pisaca)
I've been hoping and waiting for you to make a video on SMT V QwQ Just grabbed a copy (finally) a few days ago so I'm super excited to watch this asap!!
I'm glad you're very honest about how tedious Nocturne was. Really tried to like that game since the story really did get more interesting the farther you got. But man, those levels were just absurdly annoying.
Only real tedious part about nocturne is that puzzles + random encounters = not fun (which granted, how patient you are with that is subjective) but outside of that and the tower of kagutsuchi (fuck the tower of kagutsuchi, double fuck the tower of kagutsuchi for Noah) I can't exactly think back to any instances of real tedium.
@@Pie_The_Man I dropped the HD remaster mid way through, as I forgot how painfully annoying random encounters became especially if there was backtracking involved. Sad too, because I bought it twice (once on Switch, once on Steam). I just do not have the patience to deal with that stuff anymore. I can handle it one way, but if you ask me to do it all again, it's just a matter of time before I tap out.
Felt like ruined king made the same good choices as this game no grind needed, plenty ways of getting health and mana, no random encounters, good progression. It being a little too easy for some is the only complaint iv'e seen next to the bugs.
I'm not sure easy is the word. They confuse easy with convenient. I have found that each of the series takes steps to tackle some JRPG flaw or another. Not making it easier, just more convenient. Those bosses might be easier to get to, but they hit ever so slightly harder than ever before to make up for it with the magatsuhi system.
I had known about smt for a while, but it was not until i saw your nocturne video that i got around to trying nocturne myself. And I loved it. I am now playing SMTV and loving it so far. Not gonna watch this video until I beat it because I wanna stay as blind as possible, but thanks for getting me into this series.
not really spoilers but thought I would put a warning here anyways: I am fighting lamu for the 2nd time and he used the funny laser beam move and confused my entire party. i swear most boss fights in this game kill me about as fast as bosses in dmc3
@@shealtiel__ probably a little late but probably get a party with diverse types of magic attacks and remember that Noah's changing weaknesses follow a pattern, they don't change randomly. Either that or get pierce on Dante/Raidou and use their almighty attack repeatedly.
am i the only-one who think the story is actually kinda refreshing in how simple and straight to the point it is? i hate how J-RPGs usually have pointless overly-complicated stories with billions gimmicks and useless details to clutter the actually story and before someone sperg-out at me, yes, i know the fucking SMT-franchise, both SMT and Persona actually but SMT-5 dosn't do that, it's straight to the point: "god is fucking dead, peoples are fighting over to start a new-cycle and take his place, somes are fucking done with said cycle" there's very little useless fluff and it keep the story concise and straight to the point, i do agree that the pace is far from being perfect tho' as Yakkosemen said, half of the story happens in the third-act
I completely agree. If this game had the story content as all the other big jrpgs I would be skipping text as much as I always do. This is a GAME not a movie
@@joehayes8795 "Games can't tell stories" Absolute brainlet statement, if this is the kind of people 5 will attract then the smt fanbase will be worse than it ever was. Even if you don't like stories and exposition this doesn't make any sense, 5 tries to have a story and wastes your time with useless choices but fails miserably. A game that fits your denthead taste would be Nocturne, the story is deliberately minimalist and the game shuts up more than 5.
@@smtandearthboundsuck8400 Of course they can and do. That wasn't my point and I think you know it. And gatekeeping SMT away from me, an SMT fan, is silly. Games can tell wonderful stories and have great gameplay. Do they usually do both? No. I like the story as it is, which is what my first comment said, but it's the gameplay that I loved best. Previous entries have for sure had better stories, but V for sure has better gameplay.
I have to admit I only got interested in SMT and decided to try out SMT V because I read an honestly breathtaking fan-work that's using the SMT universe, so it is kind of a bummer that the game didn't really focus on its story. The combat is top-notched tho, and research did warn me beforehand that the series usually prioritize combat over the story, but I still fill like there's so much unrealized potential for the game.
What you need to know about the Shin Megami Tensei series is that the games do have interesting stories but it's never the focus at least in the main series. The main series is always about dungeon crawling, party creation, and the ideas about law and chaos. Overall the series is way more gameplay focused.
It is such a misconception that SMT has less story than the worldbuilding because only SMT 3 Nocturne and SMT V that does it Any other SMT games (1,2, strange journey, IV - a literal masterpiece) has such a GOOD story

I'm going at a rather slow pace with the game since 1) I barely have time to play these days and 2) I am absolutely terrified of world - it cements itself well as a world infested with demons.
I really loved this video although I think that the story was kinda good for most of the time and then got really good near the end. But still great video and I can see where you are coming from with the critiques mentioned in the video please continue making banger videos
My first smt game and this has hooked me onto this series. Will be emulating the 3ds games and buying nocturne soon this shit is super fun. Edit: Nvm I’m gonna buy the 3ds games now, thought I’d have to sell my arm for them but I found good prices at my local gamestore which is pretty lucky.
I do have a few issues with the gameplay like the last area requiring a lot of grinding when you can just run to the boss and the MP economy. They decided it was a good idea to make MP restoring items a limited resource that you can only carry 10 at a time while making the skills more expensive than ever forcing you to switch out demons in the middle of a boss
Literally how are you this funny. I shouldn’t be laughing out loud, I thought I didn’t do that anymore, but the funny video game music man is dancing with a blue wig on so I guess I have no choice. Thanks.
this game is really good! i agree with all your points....but Smt4 was also pretty well done in my opinion with the quest system and also no random encounter!
I like that you start the game quickly. The pacing of the story isnt good, but when the revelations starts at the 4th region, boom!!! I got hyped playing more and more. The characters are pretty dead but i guess it works. It's the compelete polar opposite of Persona where you deep dive through a characters psyche, or knowing them like in Tales series. But back to the story, as a Christian. I think it's blasphemous af! But metal as hell. They took time to study the concept of our religion. It's pretty fresh take on the whole fiasco at the Garden of Eden. So to me, being kinda versed in this topic, i really really like it. (Fingers crossed im not blaspheming) My main gripe about this game is that... It's kinda pay to win. Honestly shoulda bought the complete edition for 10 dollars more. I also am playing it on hard first playthrough because im a sadist. If you get stuck on bosses, Checkout Buffmeister's SMTV boss videos. He does it on hard without power grinding or dlc stuff.
I missed your live stream about the last Wario game, but the VOD was still sooo great ! Can't wait to catch you on stream ❤️ Love your content, xoxo from your french fan base.
7:20 if you replace the fruity guy with Black Frost like a respectable person, you basically have the team I used for most of the game from that point on. The essences and grimoires and demon statues made it easier than ever to make a strong team and stick with it, without needing to constantly fuse new demons. I didn't even update their skills that much... just having no weaknesses and some null/drain/repel affinities was enough (along with using shards/gems to get press turns when skills fell short). I still fused some really good demons along the way, but until I got some very strong demons at the very end of the game they weren't good enough to replace Alice or Idun or Black Frost (although he was the first to go).
Most JRPG's nowadays don't require you to grind, and haven't since 20 years ago. Random encounters is purely taste. Like, it's fine if you don't like Nocturne, but don't pretend the entire game is a grind, and that anyone who likes it has Stockholm syndrome. It's a good game that's lacking some QOL, not some unplayable mess. For the record, I'm not a Nocturne/difficulty fanboy or anything. I like SMT 4 and 5 more than Nocturne.
Yeah, yakko does seem to be a little over dramatic with how "outdated" the game was. Like the only parts of the game that I felt personally sucked the life outta me was the tower of kagutsuchi and like 1 or 2 annoying bosses. The random encounters aren't fun, they're not good, they don't mix well with puzzle based dungeons like in Nocturne, but they've existed in JRPGs for decades and I dont understand how someone could be a fan of JRPGs and not have at least *some* tolerance towards it.
9:10 yeah that's something that smt tends to struggle with in general. It tends to focus more on it's themes rather than the individual characters that embody those themes. 4 was one of the few mainline Smt games that had a really good story for the series. It's story is more told in it's gameplay. It a show don't tell type of thing and that's where it's charm lies at. Your told in-game that the world is deadly and lonely and it's shown through it tough enemies and it's traversal. If your used to games that are character driven I can see why it could be jarring to someone who (Im gonna get crucified for saying this) likes game like persona. There a reason it took this long for smt to take the spotlight compared to it's younger and more popular sibling that has Atlus's best writers on it. I mean people remember characters like Yu and akechi not because of what they believe in but because of there Storylines and struggles where SMT tells it's story through its themes on morality and the struggles of sticking to what you believe in.
I believe that Atlus pushed Switch purposely to its edge, because when the game is coming to other platforms, it should still look appealing with lesser effort.
"Nintendo likes to sweep up exclusivity" There are ... ways around this. I'm playing this at 60 fps upscaled to 1440p on my PC thanks to Yuzu. I don't own a Swirch, but I did buy a copy of the game.
I don't care if there's hardly any dungeons. I don't care if there aren't an abnormal amount of story bosses. I don't care if there wasn't even much story to go off of at times. What they did with the things they gave us, they did well. SMT 5 is a game that made you feel like you were doing something to officially save the world every dang time. The encounters aren't really trivialized, each boss, even in side quests is hard and somehow they all tell stories as well. SMT 5 didn't really say "This is a game where you save the world again just because the villain is doing a bad." It said "The villain ALREADY did the bad and this is the state the world is in because of it. NOW PICK THOSE SHARDS OF GLASS UP, DANGIT!" Thank you for reading my entire take on SMT 5.
I've never played SMT before, thinking of picking up SMT V. Is it like Pokémon but darker and more challenging? Because that sounds like something I may enjoy, but haven't really seen anyone compare it to Pokémon so maybe the similarities end with the monster collecting
Pokemon is inspired by smt which came out before it (megami tensei on nes) and invented the monster collecting genre, long story short, they are similar but at the same time they approach the same genre (turn based monster collecting jrpg) differently, but yes, you will find a more mature and challenging game similar to pokemon
Imagine if the Pokémon were religious figures Blasphemy More blasphemy Metal soundtrack and a lot of synth Amazing visuals Good graphics Actually way more effort was put in the game than it was needed except for the story The story sucks, but the side quests are amazing some of the best that i ever saw in jrpg You kill your "rivals" because they have a diferent ideology than the one you follow Better waifus
God I wish the story was as good as the experience because it had potential to be the best story in mainline smt imo Like, Nocturne may have focused on the insanity-inducing nature of a Chaos world, but at least when the story and characters set in it was always memorable with its art direction and something rewarding to dissect to see what it all meant, even if I didn't care for the characters I still remembered them, and I wish I could say the same for this game
This game was amazing! Perfect combat, perfect exploration, great art direction and great demon designs. The only issue with the game is that it's not persona 5. Score - 4/10. Hopefully atlus will fix that with an update.

i hear from people who used to love the "law" routes that 5's is pretty meh. and looking into it [i watched sooo many Lps/streams/cutscenes], its bc of the writer's perspectives/cultural bg being the only one. like, theres a difference between what japanese writers think of gods and God vs. latin american or european. my grandma lives a block away from the church, every saint has a holiday in central america, they have a holy version of halloween...idk. it would be fun to integrate that into SMT's future stories.
im also upset that they forgot that yuzuru and his sister existed for half of the game
Honestly considering to get this game but I have a pivotal question. Is the lacking story worth playing it to experience everything else?
As a big fan of SMT in general this is up there with my favourites such as Devil Survivor, DDS and the Raidou games (not including persona) and it is the only game in the series I actually want to 100% due to how rewarding the exploration and combat feels

SMT in a nutshell
"You wouldnt want to be square like those law nerds, have some fun with chaos!"
Later:"I have made an error, dead babies litter the streets"
Cry no more, a PC port with expanded story and content was just announced.
Now that being said, there's a *BIG* difference between comparing two games from the same company that are similar, and then there is using Persona 5 as your metric for judging how SMTV is and comparing them at literally every aspect, complaining when its lacking features from Persona, the overall showing little care about the series and it's long history, and forgetting important details such as the plot and characters (even if they turn out to be relatively weak, it's still something you should talk about in a review) all while writing it off as just "Persona without the heart" (Yeah I still will never forgive IGN for that "review")
A big reason I think this is because by doing all that, you imply that Persona 5 is the golden standard of all JRPGs and anything that isn't like it is "without the heart/settling for less", and this doesn't just go for MegaTen, this goes for any JRPGs, I've seen quite a few reviews of other JRPGs not even by Atlus compared to P5 for not having aspects of it, which to me, is just not how you should review a game.
In my mind the perfect SMTV review talks about everything the game does have to offer and its strengths and weakness (exactly like how this person did), however, *towards the end of the video*, begin comparing the two and telling Persona fans interested in the game what it has to offer in a more straightforward way so they can get a better idea on if it's for them or not, idk that's just my take
Long story short: Comparing the two isn't inherently the issue, but it becomes an issue once you do it too much to the point you mention it every other sentence, complain about Persona aspects like Social Links/Confidants and the Calender system not being there, and neglect what it does have and writing it off as basically settling for less when it's meant to be something very different is the problem.
Actually! The pre battle theme isn't unique to SJ (I don't think it was introduced there either), but SJ's is amazing, it really gives that suspense feel, specially when talking to demons (which...demons in that game make sense), and then Fear of God plays, that song is epic as hell, it really fits with the setting
The bad part is when you end the fight on the best part of the song
That's a thing since the first smt game
(Was it in MT1 though? The pre battle theme is in KMT but it came after If, I don’t bother playing inferior versions of games so i don’t know if smt1 really was the first)
yakko your work is phenomenal dude, i havent been watching you that long but holy shit the amount of effort and just pizazz in it is astounding thank you.

I loved Shin Megami Tensei 5 regardless of a lacklustre story and endings the gameplay and world exploration was just excellent
It doesn't have a lackluster story at all in my opinion.

Ah yes…. Nahobino my favorite persona 5 character
“SMT5’s story is easily one of the weakest I’ve seen in a RPG”
*Every Pokémon game*
_(except BW)_
To be fair, SMT 5 is a lot more pretentious than Pokemon is. Pokemon doesn't try to tackle themes of deities fighting over creating a new universe
I'm playing SMT V and TMS FE at the same time and I'm in freaking gaming nirvana
@@joehayes8795 Really? I'm um...replaying Strange Journey ._.
It's just me or TMS is slowly getting more love?
Personally don't play it out of pure prejudice and because i hate how they did the visual for FE characters
Maybe If i play it as a scrapped concept for Persona 5/6 i can survive it
I only played SMT for Jack Frost. He is precious and I love him.
Yes!
Everyone does that
"What if just became god, I'm so much cooler." Is the main similarity with Nocturne and V to me.
I learned about SMT3, P3, and P4 around the same time during middle school
as someone who fell deep into the SMT hole since playing persona 4. hearing “60 hours” feels so generous 😭
I absolutely love how customizable this game just beat Camael with the help of mermaid who I’ve had since the beginning.
Perfectly captured my thoughts on this beast of a game. Maybe a more story-based SMT spin-off can take a lot from the gameplay to make the perfect marriage between great story and great gameplay. The future of Megaten has never been brighter. BUY SMTV
My copy arrived at november 15, but I can't play, it has been sealed in plastic since then
@Marrow Amin The 3ds has like a 30% of the SMT catalog on it lol
@Marrow Amin Ehhh...are you ok? Saying that the 3ds has a lot of SMT games on it is relevant to the conversation because IV is also on the 3ds and they might find others on the 3ds
@Marrow Amin Dude, I'm not going to arge with you, I don't know why you are so mad, I was just adding to what you said
the real challenge is not comparing it to previous entries seeing how bad the story was...
I may find SMT story pretentious and overrated but at least they tried
Really felt like a powerful god and it was amazing!
the performance is my issue but honestly the game wasnt buggy nor with big loading screens... idk, just loved

I've been hoping and waiting for you to make a video on SMT V QwQ
Just grabbed a copy (finally) a few days ago so I'm super excited to watch this asap!!
I'm glad you're very honest about how tedious Nocturne was. Really tried to like that game since the story really did get more interesting the farther you got. But man, those levels were just absurdly annoying.
Ah, when games were designed to wring every last second out of the data... I feel ya though.
I didn't find Nocturne tedious, some dungeons had me looking up everything (same with Zelda sometimes though)
@@Pie_The_Man Let's not forget about Baal's part, warping mazes are always in a SMT game...
Why DOES Lachesis sound like she does? Clotho and Atropos sound pretty normal, Lachesis sound like she's having a stroke
Not gonna watch this video until I beat it because I wanna stay as blind as possible, but thanks for getting me into this series.
not really spoilers but thought I would put a warning here anyways:
I am fighting lamu for the 2nd time and he used the funny laser beam move and confused my entire party. i swear most boss fights in this game kill me about as fast as bosses in dmc3
@@shealtiel__ probably a little late but probably get a party with diverse types of magic attacks and remember that Noah's changing weaknesses follow a pattern, they don't change randomly.

am i the only-one who think the story is actually kinda refreshing in how simple and straight to the point it is?
i hate how J-RPGs usually have pointless overly-complicated stories with billions gimmicks and useless details to clutter the actually story
and before someone sperg-out at me,
yes, i know the fucking SMT-franchise, both SMT and Persona actually
but SMT-5 dosn't do that, it's straight to the point:
"god is fucking dead, peoples are fighting over to start a new-cycle and take his place, somes are fucking done with said cycle"
there's very little useless fluff and it keep the story concise and straight to the point,
i do agree that the pace is far from being perfect tho'
as Yakkosemen said, half of the story happens in the third-act
I completely agree. If this game had the story content as all the other big jrpgs I would be skipping text as much as I always do. This is a GAME not a movie
I'm honestly just disappointed because I was expecting mind blowing story like SMT IV
It is such a misconception that SMT has less story than the worldbuilding because only SMT 3 Nocturne and SMT V that does it

To me, wanting something other than the law vs chaos in a smt game is like wanting a person game set not in a high school

7:54 I think she said *“DAAAAAMMMMMNNN MEHEHEHE!!!!”* 😎 I think she likes your character
I believe that Atlus pushed Switch purposely to its edge, because when the game is coming to other platforms, it should still look appealing with lesser effort.
finally, after 100 hours i have finished smtv with (i think) the nuetral ending and can now watch this video, bless.
"Nintendo likes to sweep up exclusivity"
There are ... ways around this. I'm playing this at 60 fps upscaled to 1440p on my PC thanks to Yuzu. I don't own a Swirch, but I did buy a copy of the game.
So, playing Nintendo exclusive games the way they were meant to be played, nice
What was that game at 4:00???? It looks so cool!
It's called "The Pathless"
Surprisingly I'm on the switch light and have had 0 issues with frame rate lag, glitches , I've put about 24 hours into the game so far so good.
The Dark Souls of RPGs is Dark Souls, because it’s technically an RPG.
Awesome video!
@@Esenin472 thanks!
Imagine if the Pokémon were religious figures
Blasphemy
More blasphemy
Metal soundtrack and a lot of synth
Amazing visuals
Good graphics
Actually way more effort was put in the game than it was needed except for the story
The story sucks, but the side quests are amazing some of the best that i ever saw in jrpg
You kill your "rivals" because they have a diferent ideology than the one you follow
Better waifus
God I wish the story was as good as the experience because it had potential to be the best story in mainline smt imo
Like, Nocturne may have focused on the insanity-inducing nature of a Chaos world, but at least when the story and characters set in it was always memorable with its art direction and something rewarding to dissect to see what it all meant, even if I didn't care for the characters I still remembered them, and I wish I could say the same for this game
7:19 heard the danganronpa music .... now i want a yakko danganronpa video
