I want to thank you for making this video, for once i feel someone can actually understand everything i have been dealing with for so many years, i can relate to everything you mentioned, i have always been very outgoing, social and super friendly, but not being able to hear conversations in outings, groups, or gatherings was leaving me with such frustration, depression, and anxiety attacks left and right, i just simply started to shut down and stayed home and didn't want to socialize or have company.. I wanted to do this surgery for a very long time but insurance took for ever to approve and all the tests that needed to be done first several appointments later and the approval finally came thru, i just had my first surgery at USC hospital California 3 days ago!!
I still have the packing in going in 3 days to get it removed, its very uncomfortable and im still very dizzy but no pain. Im hoping once the packing is removed i will feel better.
Im thinking of doing some videos myself to show my progress as im going thru the recovery stage!
    Anyway thank you !

Thank you for posting such an informative video. My daughter is 16 and we are scheduling her surgeries soon. She's intellectually disabled so i really found your info valuable since she may not be able to effectively tell me what she is feeling post op. I would've never knew that hearing is so amplified the first few days post op. She probably would just scream without being able to tell me that things are so loud. So glad I know this before surgery. I'm hoping it improves her nausea and vertigo also. I'm excited for her to get her hearing back. I hope you were able to get your other ear done. Good luck to you in life. You are a well spoken young woman.

Aunye - I'm 72. Thanks so much for this excellent, sensible report of the experiences before and after. I've been diagnosed as likely otosclerosis of left ear, and recently booked to discuss the operation. I think it was caused decades ago by daily cruelly loud sound shocks from my workplace headset as technician in telephone exchanges. About 40dB loss. The good thing is that my hearing can probably be restored just as yours was, continuing the precious ability to communicate with people and enjoy music, etc. By the way, my confidence at 72 is partly based on learning about Dr. David Sinclair at Harvard University, where their recent years research reveals that aging can be slowed and even for some tissue, reversed. In other words, my policy is to maintain my health, including hearing, maximally as science switches from regarding aging and death as 'natural', to instead regarding aging as a collection of specific 'diseases' that can be treated by new epigenetic interventions and specific diet and exercise and lifestyle. There's plenty of other evidence if you want to look. Thanks again.

Thanks Aunye Boone for your testimony. I underwent the surgery on 13.09.2021, I had the effect of hearing well the first two hours, after the surgery, I was reborn but then my right ear closed. I've been through some tough months, it's a sickness that takes hold of you. I avoided meetings with friends and relatives, I could not follow their speeches and I tended to isolate myself, not to be with anyone. I couldn't hear the phone and the cars passing by on the street. Your video is a hope for me that in two months I will be able to regain my hearing. Thanks

Hi! Thank u for taking your time to share with us your experience with this op. I had mine last wednesday(Jan 9) and i totally underestimated the recovery process. It's been very difficult because of the dizziness. I start walking and try to lift my head up or down but i feel like my head is heavy and it goes the other way. The struggle is real. I have two kids so I've been kind of anxious seeing i cannot perform like i used to. I'm scared as to how long this symptom will continue and if the op was a success since i can't still hear any difference. Fingers crossed and hope to hear from u soon!

Excellent video! I started to lose my hearing in 2006. It got bad in 2012. At the time, I was fearful that I had Meniere's disease which is much, much worse than otosclerosis - so I avoided going to the doctor until 2014 for insurance reasons (didn't want a pre-existing condition clause to block insurance coverage). It's 2020 now, but I never got the operation - I just use hearing aids. I figure that, one day, I'll get the operation - but, I'm in no rush. Anyway, thanks a bunch for sharing your experience - especially about how things taste after the operation. Cheers!

I have had this for a very long time but was told that the first time that the risks outweighed the benefits for this surgery. Seventeen years later I went to my ENT for sinus issues and he asked me why I have not had the surgery. When I told him he was shocked and said that the risks were only about 1% negative. I am scheduled to see a surgeon for more info today. Thank you for all of this wonderful information. Have you tried flying on an airplane yet?

Great video! I just had my first surgery 3 days ago. I first noticed my hearing loss in my R ear after a severe sinus infection that went untreated for 2 weeks. The first ENT I saw did not explain my condition and I left afraid and did not go back for years. My hearing declined more and my L ear began to decline as well. I finally got hearing aids (for the last 2 years). I was feeling frustrated and still not hearing great so I finally saw another ENT who was was wonderful. She explained my condition, drew pictures and explained the surgery. I finally felt confident and well informed. I wish I had seen a better ENT the first time, 6 years ago! I could have saved a lot of money and personal struggle. I didn’t realize how much my hearing loss was affecting my whole life. I was isolating myself and the people around me seemed impatient and could not understand.
My post surgery experience was very different from yours. I’ve had little to no dizziness, no nausea, just the pulsing blood/whooshing sound in my ear for the first couple days. My surgeon put no physical restrictions on me except for not lifting over 10lbs. I have been practicing yoga for over 20 years, so I gently went right back to my practice the first day after surgery. I have been avoiding full inversions and just going slower. The poses in Kundalini yoga help to balance the brain so I feel like it can only help my recovery and my brain to integrate the changes. I’m walking 2-3mi a day.
I highly recommend anyone struggling with this to get more information, as Aunye sates, ..”hearing is everything!!” 🙏🏽💓

It may sound silly, but I was really nervous about getting it done. I don't like anesthesia, and the idea of them cutting around my eardrum gave me the willies. But, Now I am really glad I did it. I'm glad you're doing great. Do you ever get sharp pains in your ears, or the hearing go away briefly? This happens to me on occasion.

Dylan State Hi! I definitely get sharp pains and ringing in my ears a few times month. I noticed that when my sinuses/allergies are bad, I have balance issues and ringing in my left ear. I agree about the coffee shops and other venues: VERY loud! Do you feel as if your stapedectomy was successful? I hope all is well!

Aunye Boone hey! It was definitely successful. My otosclerosis was very advanced. My hearing is like night and day. I hear things I never knew made sounds. Some of it is a bit annoying though,to be honest. I have a bit of nerve damage so my hearing is 100% in one ear.
I had completely accepted that I was going to become deaf eventually. I took ASL 1,2 & 3 in college and was ready to force myself to become fluent. I really only decided to have surgery because my mother was concerned for my safety.
I'm happy I did it. I had my first surgery 8-01-16 and my second 10-03-16. Both ears now have Titanium Bartels Bucket Handle Prothesis.
      What prothesis do you have?

Hi Aunye! I had a stapedectomy done with a titanium bucket handle implant put in place about 4 days ago. My biggest concern has been that after i removed the ear cup and dressings after 48 hours of the surgery, I cannot here anything out of that ear except for a very high pitch ringing noise inside my head. If I cover my right ear with my finger I hear nothing at all. I was wondering if you had a similar experience and if so how long did it take for you to be able to hear again?

Hi. I am 27 year-old hungarian guy and according to my doctor I also have otosclerosis in my right ear. My hearing on my left ear is 100%. The doctor suggested me having a surgery, but I'm a bit afraid of it. He told me about the risks of this surgery and I got confused. He said the surgery can cause the lack of sense of taste and the face moving nerves can be damaged. That's why I'm really scared. And he also said I will have to lie a week in the hospital beacuse of the strong dizziness and vomiting and after that another week at home. I am civil engineer with a lot of work, I don't have time for lying two weeks. Do you think these things are real or do you have any of them? Is that true that flying after the surgery is not allowed anymore? Thanks for your answers in advance.

    • @dileep04061990
      @dileep04061990 5 років тому

Yes you will get lack of senses on your tongue a side. But the senses will get cure slowly. And no need to lie down in hospital for a week. I was in the hospital for only one day, after my surgery was done. And i got dizziness only for one day. But for one week you must take care yourself. And you are correct that flying must stop upto 3 months.

I had the surgery, first time on the right ear and all went well. Second surgery was 6 years later, on the left ear. The surgeon screwed up. He killed off the nerve. I was left with no hearing in that ear, 3 weeks of vomiting, the lost of my equilibrium. Which took a year of therapy to be able to walk on my own. I now only have 50 percent hearing on one side. @@Daisgirl23 Aww thank you for your concern. It was a devastating blow to my life. Hearing aids will not work in that ear, since the doctor destroyed the nerve. I'm completely deaf on the left side and only have 50% hearing on the right side. It took away my ability to distinguish where sounds are coming from, so if someone is saying hello I have to scan to see where they are. I know it's a scary story to tell but I never want to let anyone going through this procedure to know, that sometimes the outcome can go horribly wrong. As for me, with prayers, family and friends support. You learn to live with it. Again, very sweet message and thank you 😊
