Nahh Lionsgate just realized physical media folks are suckers and will pay higher prices. Best Buy exclusive 4k steelbooks used to be around $20-$22 the day of release. Stir of Echoes was like $35 the other day at release. Disney/Lionsgate and all these other companies raising their prices are just seeing what they can get away with and if it’s selling they have no reason to lower them.
I agree. $40 is fair for Apocalypse Now. $40 for the Tarantino releases with minimal special features is a huge barrier to entry. It would be great if more would boycott the high price points so it doesn’t become the norm.
I got the box set and Full Metal Jacket from Best Buy for like a combined 30-something bucks. What really brings that entire set together (the box set) is that documentary for me. Was super happy they includled that.
I agree with you on the watch order. For first-time viewing, I think the Theatrical version is better because it's much better paced. Final Cut and Redux are interesting because of the extra scenes which give makes the movie feel sorta new because it's new to me. Also, the Final Cut has the new 4k transfer, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos whereas the Theatrical and Redux have the older versions.
I'm in the UK and have just been able to preorder both Kill Bill 4k steelbooks from Lionsgate at HMV. Jackie Brown steelbook is sold out but I was able to preorder from Amazon. I'd like that Reservoir Dogs Pink Edition too but it's not listed (yet).
@@midlevelmediaI think it’s more the fact that when they’re stacked they will scratch eventually not necessarily that they’ll be scratches when you get them
I was lucky enough to watch the later cut presented in theatre with Francis Ford Coppola and managed to get him to sign my dvd copy of "The Godfather" and shook hands with him. The versions you show on here are great but in terms of Blu-Ray anyway I got the German Final Cut Steelebook and it's the best looking cover of Apocalypse Now I've seen with amazing artwork. Includes all three versions of the film as well as "Hearts of Darkness". Check it out!
The German steelbook is out of print as well. The only available version right now is an Amaray with 4 discs. This one has the 2 Bonus discs but the movies only on UHD, not on Blu-Ray, which is just fine.
I wish I had gotten the Final Cut chunky box when it came out, but I figured then that I didn't need the original cut and Redux on 4K, especially after having gotten the Redux DVD, The Complete Dossier DVD, the Full Disclosure Blu-ray set (Got that at Wild and Wooly Video when they went out of business), and the 2-disc Blu-ray set just to replace the first disc in my Full Disclosure set since that was damaged. I was unaware of the Final Cut steelbook when it was out, didn't know it existed until it was announced as one of the $5 steelbooks at Walmart, but wasn't lucky enough to come across it. So I guess I'll be getting this new steelbook. I can imagine Lionsgate Limited putting out The Wicker Man, since they put out the 4K last year in such pathetically limited numbers.
Managed to grab the 6 disc set for $42 USD on Facebook marketplace. Can’t be more happy with the purchase which I missed out a few years ago. I hate stack disc especially when it’s 4k discs. One little marking and it make the disc skip.
I got my 6 disk 4K Apocalypse Now set imported from EU from Studio Canel, who were the ones who actually did the remaster, NOT Lionsgate, I ordered it from Amazon US earlier this year for $22.00 and the digipack came with a slipbox.
As a newer collector that missed out on the previous releases, I appreciate Lionsgate doing this. As far as the prices go, apparently Lionsgate wasn't really making a profit with their steelbooks from Best Buy, so I can't really fault them for the prices now. You also can't expect mass market low prices for products that the masses are no longer buying. Until the streaming bubble bursts, collectors market prices are going to be more of the norm.
The original box set also includes all 3 of the 4k remastered cuts on Bluray. The new one is 4k only. The theatrical also has less Brando. I'll never bother with the theatrical again
I bought the Zavvi 4k LE of The Conversation and this looks the same, minus the steelbook. I'll pass on the steelbook version but it's a nice set. And I'm not a fan of THICC steelbooks, they need to let those puppies' breath. But if you missed ALL the other versions of Yourpocketsareempty Now this is for you. 😉👍
I have the 2019 one too.👍 Oh my steelbooks set of Black Sails the complete series, have all the discs, stacked too. With the plastic cover with it too.
Every addition in Redux had a purpose. Whether you like the additions or not is another matter. But they were not haphazardly thrown into the film. They absolutely follow within the narrative. The French plantation scene may alter the pacing, but it is certainly a fascinating segment and adds nuance to the overall message of the film.
I purchased a 2019 big box set I watch the Blu-rays and then I finally got a 4K player and my 4K version started to distort during the big napalm scene in the middle of the movie and then I watched the second 4K version they had and it did the same thing Really pissed me off that Lionsgate sent out inferior products so if I wanna get it on 4K, I have to buy another version. What a bummer. I also saw other people that the same thing happened to them where they had distorted scenes right around the napalm scene in the middle of the film, which they posted on UA-cam
Beautiful steelbook. Therefore, I hate they stack the disks, they should think for a better package. I often have to return my purchase on Amazon for movies that have stacked disks since they get scratches. There is a steelbook model you can snap 4 disks.
the FED printed TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS of free dollars and the rich asset owners got RICHER while everyone else got POORER oh, wait...that's how it's always been 🤣🤣🤣
OK. My take is that Apocalypse Now is ALL about the journey and not the destination. It's the buildup of the journey that gives the ending weight. Which is why I prefer the Redux version. The more footage, the better. Why? Because it adds more to the journey. I'm going to go out and guess that you prefer Aliens to Alien? Call it a hunch...
No. I’m Alien all the way. I said in the video I enjoy the journey, but to me the theatrical, tighter version of it is a more enjoyable watch. More does not always equal better and the pacing of the theatrical is perfect to me.
@@midlevelmedia Yes, but you also said that you like to get to Colonel Kurtz as quickly as possible. - I think that, the sooner you get to him, the less of a mythological creature he becomes. In the theatrical cut, he's just a bald dude in the bush. In Redux, he's a flawed god...
I bought that Conversation box set because its such an important movie to me. It literally changed my life and led me to the career I have today that allows me to afford to splurge on something like that (one of the rare times I would spend that much on a single film.) As for that ridiculously overpriced Apocalypse Now steelbook, screw them and their price gouging. I'm sticking with the 2019 release.
@@midlevelmedia What a disappointing looking set. Triple stacking the discs is just ludicrous. This should not have been a single steelbook release. That should've been a massive box set like The Conversation.
Lionsgate limited has potential but nothing for me so far. No to stacked discs on Apocalypse Now. No to poopy "pop art" on JB and KB steels. And lastly no to The Conversation for $80 or whatever when I can get the same disc from studiocanal imported from UK through Amazon for $28. They're taking the piss !
Disc stacking 4ks is pretty much a death sentence for them. If you actually intend on watching them. Yes Apocalypse Now is a brilliant film. It's legend.
Ken, I don't know what kind of communication you have with Lion's Gate when they send you these review copies, but if there is a way, maybe as a community we could let them know that chunky box sets are more desirable than steelbooks. I buy my share of steelbooks, but from the impression I get, most people seem to prefer the sets with sturdy cardboard cases and booklets. If they are going to masquerade as a boutique label, then steelbook packaging ain't it.
limited edition, one time only special release, u buy now , buy now , .....u handsome man ...😂 trust me this very good price, cheap , no can discount me go bankrupt yeahi heared this BS rip off before....
I feel your title and arguments doesn't match. Me listening to what you say doesn't sell me the product very good. As someone else says, the biggest selling point is for someone who haven't got the movie and wants it. 40 dollars for 6 discs aren't that bad, but stacking them aren't a good solution.
Lionsgate are Foolish! They don't even ship outside of the States. They could make a hell of a lot more money if they did. I live in the UK and have to get scalped by Ebayers to own these movies. It's a joke
Oh man, you just did a video that you don't shill company products! I guess its now hard for you to put yourself in the shoes of a consumer who has to budget their purchases. The stacked discs are a horrible idea for the price. Much like the other "negative" reviews you gave examples of, this was such a softball, i thought you were playing with foam
I understand being against the stacked discs, but it’s still a 6 discs set with 3 cuts on Blu-ray and 4K and an additional documentary. The price, while I’ll admit is not as great as it used to be, is a fair one and if that’s what I think, I will say it. I just paid $50 for a 4K of “Congo” with no additional cuts and a couple new features. Compared to that and many other boutique releases, it’s totally worth it.
I just do not get the love of Apocalypse Now. I want to really like this movie but it is boring. They said it's one of the best war films of all time? Platoon is much better.

I bought the first edition of Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut on 4K back in the good old days when Walmart was selling it for $19.99.
paid 14 for mine from GRUV
I think I got it for $10 on Black Friday at Best Buy
I got that 6-disc set for an unbelievable $13.99 on Amazon in 2022. I thought it had to be a mistake.
Just looked, I paid 13.99 for the 6 disc 4k 40th Anniversary edition back in july 2022.
The reflection in the water on the cover of Apocalypse Now is Marlon Brando.

I liked the theatrical version better cause Martin Sheen doesn’t smile in it like he does when he steals the surfboards.
I was really impressed with the shipping box when i ordered "The Conversation" on 4k.
This sounds promising. I ordered the 3 Tarantino movies and shipping was definitely a concern.
I didn't know it was even OOP; glad I bought it when it was cheap.
I scooped up a brand new ‘final cut’ version on Amazon a couple years ago for 13 bucks. Biggest 4k steal I’ve found to date
That’s part about the “chunky” box set not being available for 3-4 years, I just got it on Amazon direct in November 2022
Bought the old version 2 years ago for like 20 bucks
Pressing discs is cheap once you have the facilities, you are paying for packaging surely.
Is there any noticeable image and/or sound improvement over the 4K version from 2019?
No. It’s the same discs.
